Update: PS1- und PS2-Spiele auf der PlayStation 4 zocken

Mittlerweile hat Sony mehrere alte PS2-Titel auf die PlayStation 4 portiert. Die meisten PS2-Games können Sie aber nicht spielen. Außerdem, auch wenn Sie das PS2-Original besitzen, müssen Sie die PS4-Version erneut im PlayStation Store erwerben.
Alle verfügbaren Spiele sind in Full-HD-Auflösung verfügbar, unterstützen Remote Play und enthalten Trophäen. Aktuell sind bereits einige Titel verfügbar, weitere sollen mit der Zeit folgen.
Aktuell sind auf der PlayStation 4 unter anderem die PS2-Klassiker GTA San Andreas, GTA Vice City, GTA 3, Max Payne, Primal, Manhunt und einige Star Wars Titel verfügbar.

PlayStation 4: PS1- und PS2-Spiele emulieren

Im November 2015 hat Microsoft die Abwärtskompatibilität der Xbox One angestoßen. Nun möchte Sony vielleicht schon 2016 nachziehen.
Sony hat sich zu den aktuellen Gerüchten bereits geäußert: «We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation. We have nothing further to comment at this point in time.» (Quelle: Wired November 2015)
Eine Abwärtskompatibilität zur PS2 wird daher mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit in naher Zukunft hergestellt. Der Weg zur PS1 sollte von dort auch nicht weit sein. PS3-Spiele lassen sich bald auf der PS4 mit PlayStation Now streamen.
Viele PS One Klassiker können Sie bereits auf der PS Vita spielen. Die Spiele finden Sie im PlayStation Network Store. Hier gibt es bereits eine Auswahl von angepassten PS1- und PS2-Spielen. Die Auswahl ist jedoch recht übersichtlich.

Beinahe alle PS1-Spiele ruckeln, aber Sony arbeitet an einer Lösung

Bereits beim südostasiatischen Launch von PS Plus Premium vor genau einem Monat, konnten wir einen ersten Blick auf das Lineup an PS1- und PSP-Klassikern werfen und waren äußerst ernüchtert. Ein Großteil der Spiele ruckelte, was darauf zurückzuführen ist, dass sie in den europäischen PAL-Versionen veröffentlicht wurden.

Unsere Vermutung, dass Deutschland größtenteils PAL-Versionen erhält, war leider richtig

Beim südostasiatischen Launch trafen wir zunächst auf eine wilde Mischung von PAL- und NTSC-Versionen, was ein wenig an das Debakel mit der PlayStation Classic erinnert, aber auch zur Region passte, da in den dortigen Ländern beide Standards galten. In Japan und den USA wurden hingegen ausschließlich NTSC-Fassungen veröffentlicht, was zur Historie der Territorien passte.

NTSC-Versionen enthalten jedoch so gut wie immer ausschließlich eine japanische oder englische Lokalisierung, weshalb wir vermuteten, dass in Europa weitgehend PAL-Versionen im PS-Plus-Premium-Katalog landen würden. Einzig in diesen war eine deutsche, französische oder spanische Übersetzung vorhanden.

Diese Einschätzung hat sich nun bewahrheitet: wir können bestätigen, dass bis auf Tekken 2 und Kurushi, die nie auf Deutsch erschienen sind, sowie Mr. Driller alle PS1- und PSP-Spiele als PAL-Versionen vorliegen.

Tekken 2, Mr. Driller und Kurushi spielen sich dank konstanter 60 Bilder pro Sekunde exzellent

Die meisten PAL-Titel laufen in 25 fps und ruckeln stark, die einzigen Ausnahmen sind Wild Arms und Jumping Flash, die mit einer Framerate von 50 fps dargestellt werden.

Wir haben alle Spiele einer Analyse unterzogen, hier einige Beispiele:

Das Oddworld-Abenteuer schafft es lediglich auf 25 fps, weshalb die seinerzeit sehr aufwendigen Animationen hakelig aussehen.

In der NTSC-Version wird Syphon Filter mit exakt 20 Bildern pro Sekunde dargestellt, aufgrund von Rundungsfehler fluktuiert die PAL-Version munter zwischen 20 und 21 fps.

Das Original von 1996 läuft zwar ebenfalls nur mit 25 fps, ist dafür aber mit deutschen Untertiteln versehen und spielt sich noch immer recht rund.

Höhere Bildqualität und nützliche Features

3D-Szenen von PlayStation-1-Spielen werden mit einer Auflösung von 1440p gerendert, statische Elemente, wie Bildschirmteste, Texturen und Menügrafiken, liegen aber unverändert in ihrer originalen Qualität vor. Das Plus an Schärfe in den Spielen selbst ist jedoch äußerst willkommen.

Außerdem hat der Emulator noch ein paar weitere Features an Bord, die exzellent gelungen sind. So können wir jederzeit Speicherstände anlegen oder das Spielgeschehen zurückspulen, Retro-Filter bringen zudem das Gefühl von damals zurück.

Der Speicher der PS5 ist üppig bemessen, daher können jederzeit mehrere Abbilder des Spielgeschehens abgesichert werden.

Massives Ghosting in einigen Spielen

Nach der Kritik, die aufgrund des südostasiatischen Launchs hochkochte, schob Sony für einige Titel Patches nach. Diese taugten aber wenn überhaupt nur als Brandbeschleuniger, da der PS1-Emulator der PS5 und PS4 lediglich unpräzise Zwischenbilder einfügt.

Bei dem Prozess werden Mittelwerte von sich bewegenden Objekte innerhalb von zwei Frames ermittelt und dann als transparenter Effekt umgesetzt. Diese Geistererscheinungen – sogenanntes Ghosting – führen zu einem inkonsistenten Spielgefühl.

P1: Nein, ihr seid nicht betrunken, solche Zwischenbilder sieht man ständig in Jumping Flash, obwohl das Spiel immerhin mit 50 fps läuft.

In Everybody’s Golf passiert exakt dasselbe.

Sony wird Retro-Fans bald die Wahl zwischen NTSC und PAL lassen

Es gibt aber Grund zur Hoffnung: Denn Pünktlich zum Europa-Start ließ Sony via Twitter verlauten, dass bald eine Option hinzugefügt wird, die Spieler*innen zwischen NTSC- und PAL-Versionen wählen lässt.

Das war auch unser Wunsch nach dem japanischen und amerikanischen Launch, da es die am einfachsten umzusetzende Methode ist, auch wenn wir dann nicht flüssiges Gameplay in 60 Hz und eine deutschen Lokalisierung gleichzeitig genießen können.

Ohne größere Eingriffe in die Spiele wäre das auch unmöglich, Sound-Effekte und die Sprachausgabe müssten erst an die höhere Abspielgeschwindigkeit angepasst werden, was bei Klassikern zu einem großen Problem werden kann. Nicht immer sind die Quelldaten nach solch einer langen Zeit erhalten geblieben.

Preparation

To use the Remote Play feature, you need the following items.

Application installation

The following steps need only be performed the first time you use the application. You can use the same app to connect to both the PS4 console and the PS5 console.

Download the [PS Remote Play] application and save it to your desktop or other location. nine0039

PS4 console setup

Set up your PS4 console using one of the following methods. The following steps only need to be performed the first time you use the Remote Play feature.

On the function screen, go to [Settings] > [Remote Play Connection Settings], and enable the [Allow Remote Play] setting.
On the Features screen, go to [Settings] > [Account Management] > [Activate as Primary PS4] and select [Activate]. This setting can only be enabled on one PS4 console per account. For details on how to activate your PS4 console as your primary console, see the PS4 Console User Guide. nine0006
To launch the Remote Play feature when the PS4 console is in Rest Mode, go to [Settings] > [Power Saving Settings] > [Select Features Available in Rest Mode]. Then check the boxes for [Keep Internet Connection] and [Allow the PS4 system to turn on over the network].

The following steps will need to be performed every time you connect to your PS4 console from a Mac computer. nine0003

1.: Turn on your PS4 console or put it into rest mode.
2.: Connect your controller to your Mac via Bluetooth®.

You can also use a USB cable.
3.: Launch the [PS Remote Play] app on your Mac and select [Sign in to PSN]. nine0043
4.: Sign in with the account you use with your PS4 console.
If you select [Settings], you can set the video quality settings for Remote Play, such as resolution and frame rate.
5.: Select [PS4].
The app will search for the PS4 console you set up in PS4 Console Setup and connect to it. Once connected, your Mac will display the PS4 console screen and allow you to use the Remote Play feature. nine0039 Next time you can select the console you connected to before.

Before connecting remotely from outside your home, make sure your device connects properly to your PS4 console when it is near it.

In addition to the controller, you can use the control panel to control your PS4 console.
While in Remote Play, hovering your Mac mouse over the screen you are using for Remote Play will display the control panel.

Exiting the «Remote Play» function

Click the icon in the upper left corner of the screen you are using for the Remote Play feature.
The message «This Remote Play session will be disabled» will be displayed.
To exit Remote Play when the PS4 console is in Rest Mode, select the [Switch Console to Rest Mode] checkbox.

Select [OK]. nine0039 The Remote Play function will be exited and the screen will return to the state it was in before the Mac was connected to the PS4 console.

To uninstall the [PS Remote Play] application, drag the [PS Remote Play] icon from the Applications folder to the Trash. Then open Finder and select [Empty Trash].
