A remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has been confirmed by Ubisoft. Sadly, the release date has been delayed more than once, but the game has not been cancelled. Here’s what we currently know about the status of The Prince of Persia remake.

Ubisoft announced the Price of Persia Remake during their 2020 Uplay Event. The game was supposed to launch in January 2021 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. Now we’re in 2023 and still waiting, since the PoP remake has seen numerous delays following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ubisoft rebooted Prince of Persia in 2003 with The Sands of Time. It was an instant hit, and so (to nobody’s surprise) two sequels followed: The Warrior Within and The Two Thrones (we won’t talk too much about the mediocre spin-off-games like The Forgotten Sands here). But eventually Ubisoft chose to abandon Prince of Persia in favor of its extremely successful Assassin’s Creed games.

Note: There are two versions of the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake. One is just an HD remaster of the original game, and that’s available for purchase now, while the other is being developed as a completely new remake for next-generation consoles.

Prince of Persia Remake: Ubisoft Retracts Official Release Date for The Sands of Time

We didn’t get updates on this game for a long time, but in late 2022 Ubisoft confirmed they’re still developing the Prince of Persia Remake. They also shared an info page that gives us an idea about the current status of the game.

The launch, which was expected to happen no later than March 2023, is not mentioned anywhere in the document. Therefore, we shouldn’t expect this game to arrive any time too soon. Ubisoft also cancelled pre-orders and refunded the customers that pre-ordered the game. Furthermore, they’ve said that remakes for other Prince of Persia titles are not planned at the moment.

Considering the latest rumors, we’re expecting the Prince of Persia Remake to be released no earlier than late 2023, maybe even 2024, especially since Ubisoft are having such a tough time right now.

Positive News For Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

You shouldn’t worry about the Prince of Persia remake being unfaithful to the original game, as Ubisoft has promised to use the same storyline as before, which sees Dastan stopping the Vizier from getting the Sands of Time. Along the way, he’ll face numerous enemies while needing to complete puzzles.

If you haven’t played the original game, don’t feel bad. It’s two decades old, and things have changed within the gaming industry. But we’d recommend taking an interest in The Prince of Persia, as this game introduced time-based mechanics and parkour running. We probably wouldn’t have franchises like Assassin’s Creed or Deathloop without The Prince of Persia.

The Sands of Time Remake: Game Trailer

Ubisoft announced the Sands of Time Remake with a short trailer that you can watch below. It provides excellent information on what to expect from the full release of the Sands of Time remake.

We see our prince making the faithful mistake of opening the Sands of Time with his infamous dagger, and we all know the rest from there. A classic tale of love and adventure ensures, with the element of time being our biggest adversary.

And don’t worry! Since the graphics have been heavily criticized, we’re expecting the game to look a lot better than in the trailer.

Prince of Persia The Sands of Time Remake release date rumours, more

Back at Ubisoft Forward 2020, a remake of cult platforming classic ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time’ was announced. However, the game has run into numerous roadblocks throughout its development so far, and its launch date has subsequently been delayed multiple times. With so much uncertainty surrounding it, Prince of Persia The Sands of Time Remake release date rumours have been spreading far and wide.

Having originally released on sixth generation consoles all the way back in 2003, the tale of the unnamed Prince has since been enjoyed by millions the world over. The Sands of Time series would go on to produce two direct sequels: 2004’s ‘Prince of Persia: Warrior Within’ and 2005’s ‘Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones’. Additionally, Ubisoft later released ‘Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands’ – which served as a narrative gap-filler between the first two games – in 2010. Now over 30 years old, the Prince of Persia franchise hasn’t received a new instalment since 2018’s ‘Prince of Persia: Escape’ – an endless, side-scrolling mobile runner game. Indeed, for fans the Prince of Persia The Sands of Time remake release date could not come soon enough.

Prince of Persia The Sands of Time Remake release date rumours

All we know so far is that the Prince of Persia The Sands of Time Remake release date will be sometime after Ubisoft’s 2023 fiscal year ends on March 31, 2023. Ubisoft PR lead Antoine Leduc-Labelle told The Verge back in May that Ubisoft was “no longer targeting a FY23 release”.

However, that’s not to say we won’t be getting an update soon. The Nerd Stash reported in August 2022 that the PlayStation Trophy list for the remake had gone live on PSN Profiles, indicating that the game could be closer to completion than we currently think. With Ubisoft Forward 2022 just round the corner on September 10, we could well be in for an update.

Having originally been given a January 21, 2021 launch date at 2020’s Ubisoft Forward event, the remake was initially delayed to March 18, 2021, and then indefinitely when Ubisoft took to Twitter on February 5, 2021 to share the news.

Since the original announcement trailer at Ubisoft Forward 2020 aired, we haven’t really seen much of The Sands of Time Remake.

The trailer and accompanying gameplay overview – which you can find in the section below – were slated by fans for their poor graphical fidelity. Though, of course, much of this was alpha footage.

Ubisoft has postponed the release of the remake of the 2003 adventure action game Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for the fourth time. Updated long-suffering project should be released no earlier than April 2023 .

Shortly before, some major retailers such as GameStop and Amazon announced they were canceling pre-orders for the game. This fact only prompted Ubisoft to come up with an official clarification.

In the press release , the French publisher wrote the following:

«We are proud of the work done by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, and Ubisoft Montreal will benefit from their work and continue to create an excellent remake. As a result, we are no longer aiming to release the game in fiscal year 2023 (until March 31, 2023), therefore, it has been removed from pre-order lists.»

Players wishing to cancel their pre-orders can contact their retailers, but the company emphasizes that development of the remake is ongoing and fans will receive updates as it progresses.
