The rumbles on the horizon aren’t another Liberator coming to carpet bomb your Tech Plant: They’re rumors about Daybreak’s long-hinted-at Planetside 3. There’s nothing out there quite like the massively multiplayer online FPS series, which rakes hundreds of players into massive futuristic battles. Heavily armored MAX battlesuits and tanks clash with squads of sci-fi infantry as entire servers participate in eternal wars. Planetside 2 has been chugging along since 2012, though, and its playerbase has declined since its most popular years.

The time seems right for Planetside 3. Here’s what Daybreak has to say about its plans for a sequel.

What do we know about Planetside 3?

  • We’re curating all the best Black Friday PC gaming deals right here

It sure sounds like Daybreak is making it. Or at least, planning to.

In an open letter, Andy Sites, executive producer of Planetside 2, described plans for Planetside 3: «… we envision expanding from the current battlefields of Auraxis, to full-fledged galactic war with empires exploring, colonizing and conquering one another within an expansive galaxy.»

This description evokes the idea of multiple battlefields the size of Planetside 2’s, with strategic objectives impacting larger scale gameplay in the galaxy, building things and colonizing new parts of the battlefield with advanced technology your team has unlocked, and space battles over whether resources will get where they need to. A pretty exciting vision of the future, if it comes to pass.

Sites also said, on spin-off Planetside Arena and Planetside 3: «We envision PlanetSide Arena as a way to allow us to link present day Planetside 2 and Planetside 3 story lines, as well as providing an opportunity to try out new features, styles of play, etc.»

Unfortunately, Planetside Arena ground to a halt at the start of 2020, so it’s difficult to say what will come next.

Does Planetside 3 have a release date?

So far Daybreak’s only statements on Planetside 3 are all presented as theoretical, so don’t get your hopes up about the sequel happening anytime soon. Planetside 3 sounds very much in the planning stages.

There’s no word on a timetable, and with no concrete information it’s tough to expect it anytime soon.

Daybreak Games has been bought

In December 2020, Stockholm-based «global gaming cooperative» Enad Global 7 announced that it had acquired Planetside developers Daybreak Games. We don’t know what, if anything, this changes about work on Planetside 3, but it’s one of the latest pieces of news about the studio we’ve gotten, absent any real information about the game itself.

Prior years hadn’t really been kind to Daybreak. laid off employees in April  and December  2018, and again in October 2019 . In January 2020, it unveiled a new business structure  that assigned its games to newly-created studios within the company. Rogue Planet Games was in charge of Planetside, last we heard.

What about the other Planetside games?

With the original Planetside closing shop back in 2016, it’s a fair bet that Planetside 2 will do the same sometime after the third game in the series releases. But that could be many years off, considering Planetside 3 still seems to be very early in development.

Peak players for Planetside 2 has improved from lower points in 2019 and 2020, now sitting around around 1700 on Steam, which still isn’t fantastic, but not totally barren either (and notably, Planetside 2 has its own launcher and was ported to the PlayStation 4 as well). Planetside 2 continues to get support, releasing a brand new continent in Expedition: Oshur.

Battle royale shooter Planetside Arena didn’t do the best, closing up shop in January of 2020 amidst a reorganization for Daybreak.

Will Planetside 3 have cunning disguises?

I have my fingers crossed that The Schnoz will make the leap to the third entry in the series.

Expedition: Oshur

Welcome to the Isles of Oshur

A new, massive-scale continent makes its way to PlanetSide 2 for the first time since 2014. The tropical isles of Oshur are reminiscent of a time before the Auraxian war, where research and exploration were the most valued pursuits, and the factions weren’t fully divided.

Something for Everyone

Oshur was designed with an emphasis on logistics and diversity of gameplay. The towering Trident Relays necessitate air support and quick responses, the lattice has deliberate and strategic cutoffs for squad and platoon leaders to pursue, the beachheads and mid-field bases carve a meaningful role for construction; the open savannahs, sandy beaches, and tropical jungles foster vehicle battles and heavy armor usage; and the hand-crafted designer-driven bases create unique and learnable gameplay spaces for hardened infantry veterans. With this new island battleground, there is something to enjoy no matter your style of gameplay.

Exodus Flotilla

The expedition to Oshur took place aboard the new Exodus-class Fleet Carriers. Unlike traditional maps, there are no Warpgates on Oshur, and this flotilla of heavily armed fleet carriers will become your new base of operations. Enemy vehicles that stray too close will be shot out of the sky by the shipboard Particle Projection Cannon.

Water Mechanics

As a part of a massive undertaking, we’ve completely changed how water works in PlanetSide 2. Every vehicle, infantry, and projectile interaction has been re-engineered to accommodate these new mechanics.

  • Wheeled Vehicles putter along the surface.
  • Hover vehicles float above the water.
  • Air vehicles cruise beneath the waves like submarines.
  • Infantry and treaded vehicles prowl the ocean floor.
  • Projectiles that enter the water are hit with heavy drag.

Indar, Amerish, Hossin, and Esamir will all be retrofitted with these new water mechanics at a later date (so don’t dip your toes into that frozen river just yet.)

Underwater Weapons

Most traditional weapons won’t fire while submerged, but special equipment has been added to ease the transition.

Three new underwater rifles and one underwater pistol are now available to access by various means.

  • UBR-100 Frogman — Unlocked by completing the first tier of the Conquest Oshur directive.
  • UBR-150 Sea Lion — Unlocked with Certs or DBC.
  • UBR-300 Swordfish — Unlocked by completing Chapter 02 of the Distant Shores campaign.
  • UBP-1 Starfish — Unlocked by completing the Distant Shores campaign.

New Facilities

Interlink Outpost
Constructed as early communication hubs for research on the islands and out at sea, the Interlinks are single-point infantry-capture bases with a close-quarters arena and multiple entrances for attackers.

Controlling an Interlink Outpost counts toward Empire Strength on the continent.

Trident Relay
These massive spires jutting from the water’s surface are only enterable from their airpads located high above. Three symmetrical entrance-ways provide an airport-style atmosphere to fight through.

Controlling a Trident Relay counts toward Empire Strength on the continent, and allows for lattice cutoffs deep into enemy territory.

Distant Shores, Chapter 02

Nascent Expeditions has finally cleared the path toward Oshur, and the Empires are maneuvering to gain a foothold. The last chapter of the Distant Shores campaign will be made available Jan. 27.

New Directives

Oshur Collections — A new «Collections» tab can be found in the Directives page. Our first Collections directive asks you to recover the lost dog tags of those who died during the evacuation of Oshur.

Conquest — Oshur — In the «Strategic» tab, a new directive line dedicated to the war for Oshur has been added. Unlock the new UBR-100 Frogman by completing the first tier, and the (very special) Paradise Camo at Master tier, reserved for only the most hardened veterans.

Oshur Auto-Unlock Dates

To celebrate the launch of Oshur, we’ll have certain windows where Oshur will auto-unlock itself. Outside of these days, the continent will remain in the normal rotation. We can enable or disable this functionality without downtime based on demand. The goal here is to allow everyone to experience the continent immediately while its new, while avoiding the burnout of the same map 24/7.

The current auto-unlock schedule is: Wednesday, Jan. 26 through Sunday, Jan. 30

Combat Medic: Keep your fellow soldiers alive and in fighting shape. You are the beating heart of any squad.

Infiltrator: Stay silent. Stay invisible. You are death from the shadows, whether with a knife from behind or a single shot from a sniper’s nest. You are the enemy’s constant fear.

Engineer: Deploy crucial equipment. Resupply your allies. Fix the thing, then fix it again. You keep the machines running, the tanks firing, and the war effort moving forward.

MAX: Step into your Mechanized Assault Exo-Suit (MAX). Cannons for hands, armor for flesh, and a disposition to match, you are a walking mass of nigh unstoppable death.

OUTFIT TEAMWORK

Join or form your own Outfit, a like-minded group of soldiers who train together day in and day out. Whether a small rapid response team or a massive clan, Outfits are vital to each empire’s strategic organization.

VEHICLES & WEAPONS

Train and equip your soldier how you want, with a huge array of weapons and vehicles which can be extensively customized by preference or purpose, using attachments, upgrades, and add-ons earned in the war.

Izh Planet-3: specifications, review, reviews

In 1971, simultaneously with the Jupiter-3 model, the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant launched a somewhat cheaper Izh Planet-3 motorcycle into a series. Unified in most details, it was distinguished by an engine that had only one cylinder.

Such a device of the power unit, which had a reciprocating purge scheme, was tested on the previous Planet-2 model. The designers tried to simplify the maintenance and repair of equipment by making the engine crankshaft collapsible and providing for the possibility of repairing the gearbox without dismantling the assembly.

Basic modification

9000 9000

Otherwise, IZH Planet-3 was not much different from its two-cylinder counterpart. The technical characteristics of these machines were quite close.

  • Engine — air-cooled, single cylinder, two stroke. With a working volume of 346 cubic meters. see gave out power of 18 liters. With. and in this respect was inferior to the two-cylinder counterpart.
  • A carburetor is used to create a combustible mixture. On early modifications, this is K36I, which later gave way to the K62I model. Fuel flows from the tank by gravity.
  • Clutch, like Jupiter, multi-plate, oil bath. With all the structural similarity, the details of these nodes are not interchangeable. On the Izh Planet-3 motorcycle, there is another motor sprocket. There is a difference in the shutdown drive.
  • The gearbox, as well as the clutch, retained the design scheme and the number of steps. But at the same time, it differs in the switching device and gear ratios.

The remaining components did not differ significantly and can be considered interchangeable. In this form, the weight of the car reached 168 kg, and the maximum speed was 120 km / h. A version of a motorcycle with a sidecar was also produced, which had the designation Izh Planeta-3K.

You will find something, you will lose something

The Third Planet, due to the lower motor power, was somewhat inferior to Jupiter in dynamics. Owner reviews suggest that this shortcoming was compensated by better traction at low revs. This gave certain advantages when driving over rough terrain.

But, despite the fact that the engine size on Izh Planet-3 remained almost the same as that of the two-cylinder unit of the older model, fuel consumption increased significantly. At high speeds, it reached 5 liters per 100 km. But the ignition adjustment was simplified.

Izh Planet-3 was produced from 1971 to 1977. During this time, 478,496 machines of this modification were manufactured. They had minor differences, such as the color of the seat upholstery materials and side linings on the tank.

First changes

In 1977, the next version of the motorcycle, Izh Planet 3 01, went into production. Creating this model, the developers followed the same path as when modifying Izh Jupiter. The changes affected:

  • The front wing, which received an adjustment in height above the wheel.
  • Rear shock absorbers, the design of which has been significantly improved by adding the ability to change the spring preload.
  • Power unit. Forcing the engine by increasing the compression ratio made it possible to increase the power to 20 hp. With. But this required the installation of a candle with a different glow number — A-23, an increase in the area of cooling fins and a change in their shape.
  • Steering wheel designs, on which rear-view mirrors appeared, and the ends of the control handles received protection for hands when falling in the form of rubber balls.
  • Front brake that received a brake light frog.
  • Installed regular safety bars that protected the motorcyclist in an accident

The last motorcycle Izh Planet-3 01 left the assembly line in 1981. By this time, 400,845 copies of this modification had been produced.

Final

By 1981, specialists from the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant prepared a new package of upgrades.

  • After tinkering with the carburetor, added 1 liter. With. power., having achieved an indicator of 21 liters. With.
  • A new fuel tank was installed, which later migrated to the Izh Planeta-4 model.
  • Newly shaped rear wing. Due to the fact that the release of the part was not yet debugged, the new wing was not installed on all series of the machine.

Well, and one more little thing. In this form, the motorcycle began to be called Izh Planet-3 02. By 1985, when the release of the modification was completed, they managed to make 216,101 copies.

Familiar problems

Owner reviews suggest that, regardless of the version and year of manufacture, the Izh Planet-3 motorcycle had the same drawbacks:

  • Engine vibration associated with its design features. Almost all single-cylinder engines sin with this.
  • Problem electrical equipment. Almost the same as Jupiter of the same years of production, the 6-volt wiring installed on Izh Planet-3 was not of very high quality. An insufficiently powerful generator created problems when driving at night.

Complete elimination of motor vibrations is almost impossible. Even serious engine tuning does not completely solve the problem. You have to put up with this feature of technology. As for electricians, motorcycle enthusiasts who are interested in tuning Izh Planet-3 often ask the same questions:

  • How to detect ignition system malfunctions?
  • What to do if the charge is lost?
  • How to replace the relay-regulator?
  • Does it make sense to install electronic ignition?
  • How to change a failed generator?
  • Where can I find the wiring diagram for Izh Planet-3 for 6 volts?
  • How to install BSZ?

These questions are innumerable and it is simply impossible to answer them in one review article. This is where you need to dig deeper. Therefore, we will try to answer as briefly as possible.

  1. Since the wiring diagram on Izh Planeta-3 has changed several times even depending on individual series, one cannot count on an exact match of its description. Sad but true.
  2. Replacing the wiring, converting electrical equipment from 6 volts to 12 volts and installing contactless ignition is a completely justified step to improve the performance of the motorcycle. After such an upgrade, the ignition installation is simplified, and engine operation becomes more stable. At the same time, you will know exactly how the electrical circuit of your Izh Planet-3 is arranged!

But getting down to business without the right skills or the right tools is clearly not worth it. As for do-it-yourself tuning enthusiasts, for them the Izh Planet-3 motorcycle is an unplowed field for activity. There is where to turn around. Dare!
