A parent’s guide to Apex Legends
At Childnet, we regularly deliver online safety training sessions in schools to pupils, parents, carers and teachers. Recently we have noticed an increasing number of young people talking about the game ‘Apex Legends’. In this blog we are giving guidance to parents and carers about Apex Legends looking at what the game is and some of the key things to be aware of.
What is Apex Legends?
Apex Legends is an online game which is free to play. Apex Legends is known as a ‘Battle Royale’ game where players join small ‘squads’ of 3 players and then fight other players to be the last squad standing.
Each match is capped at 60 players (20 squads) and each individual player can pick to play as one of eight characters, all of whom have their own special skills and offensive abilities.
What age rating is Apex Legends?
Apex has a PEGI rating of 16. PEGI have said this is because it ‘features sustained depictions of violence towards human characters and moderate violence. Not appropriate for persons below 16 years of age.’
This PEGI rating only takes into account the content in the game and not the contact element, where players may be exposed to swearing and other offensive language from strangers in voice or on-screen text chat.
What do I need to know?
- You need to create an account
In order to play Apex Legends you have to create an account. To create this account you need to provide:
– an email address (which you will have to verify)
– a display/user name
– your age
- Where you can play
Apex Legends is free to download on Xbox One, PS4 and PC from the Apex Legends website or from the Xbox, Origin or PS4 store.
- You are playing against other players
As Apex Legends is an online game you will play against and communicate with players of different ages from across the world. Voice-chat is commonly used in the game in order to communicate with other players, plan strategy and navigate through the game.
The game also offers another method of communication called ‘pings’. A ping is an automated messages (both auditory and on-screen) sent to other members of your squad. Different pings can be used to indicate different events in the game for example, asking for help or marking a location.
In voice chat, you can mute individual players or can turn off the feature permanently. It is also possible to mute pings from other players, however many young people find that the ‘ping’ feature is key to the game.
- You can team up with people you know
Although the game is designed so that you and your squad are competing against other players of different ages from across the world. We would recommend that young people choose their own team, joining up with friends and family members to create a squad. As most of the in game communication is with your squad members, this may be a safer option for children. If you do not select your own squad then players will get randomly allocated a squad with two strangers.
- The graphics
Apex Legends is first-person shooter game, this means that you see events in the game through the eyes of your character and can mean that the visuals are more realistic.
The game does feature violence and blood, however this is animated and not overly gory however, there are certain moves within the game such as ‘finisher moves’ that specifically execute defenceless enemies. There are also options for chemical gas attacks that can be used on multiple enemies in order to kill them.
- You can make in-game purchases
Apex Coins is the premium currency in Apex Legends and can be used to purchase Apex Packs, characters and items in the in-game shop. The price of Apex coins range from £7.99 to over £79.99
Reporting
Currently there is no in-game report system. The game currently requires you to make your complaints externally, instead of being able to report someone in the game for bad language, cyberbullying, or ruining the experience for others.
On PC, you have to open the offending player’s profile in Origin (which is EA’s game client), and report them from there. On console EA’s website sends PS4 players to the PlayStation guide for reporting PSN users and Xbox One players to Microsoft’s code of conduct page for Xbox Live.
It looks hopeful that that Apex Legends will bring out a report button, however the aim of this is to specifically report cheating within the game rather than specifically for players displaying inappropriate behaviours such as cyberbullying.
Our advice
Have an open and honest conversation with your child
It’s important to involve yourself in your child’s online life and a simple and effective way to do this is by talking to them. Try to maintain an open dialogue with your child and find opportunities to talk to them about what they love to do online as well as the risks.
Ask your child about whether they play Apex Legends and what they like about it. Our conversation starters can help you get started.
Play Apex Legends with your child
It may seem daunting, but one of the best things that you can do is to engage with the gaming environment and begin to understand what makes Apex so attractive to young people. Be interested, ask questions, and watch them play the game – or better still play with them.
Give your child strategies to deal with upsetting or inappropriate behaviour
As Apex Legends doesn’t yet have a block feature or an easy-to-use report option, talk to your child about what other things they can do if they encounter inappropriate behaviour on the game. Remind them to talk to you about it, leave the game if they feel uncomfortable and play with people they know and trust.
Restrict in-game purchases
Parents can prevent their children from running up unwanted bills by ensuring that no credit card is associated with their account or console. Ensure you child knows the reasons why they aren’t allowed to purchase items within the game or talk together to set a budget for them to stick to. Some children may not understand it is real money which is being spent, when in the game it’s referred to as Apex Coins. Find out more about how to restrict in-app purchases here.

So the game itself is fun and very competitive. Graphics and motion are good and good for teamwork and strategizing. The problem(s) are that there’s too much corruption in the game. People are clearly cheating with rapid fire and movement and aim assist. There’s so many bugs and glitches it’s ridiculous. Me and my son were kicked out of the game several times and it froze several times since playing it this season. Tried to report or contact ea or Respawn about these issues and no response whatsoever. Also the chat like most online games nowadays is saturated with immature and inappropriate whiney babies of all ages talking smack or putting down others. The game has gotten so bad and unplayable because of the poor servers and people who have ruined it.

Its a hugely successful online shop that has some features like a free game to display your online purchases.
This online shop has a huge veriety of skins. Banners. Charms. Heirlooms and other over priced asthetic content. Including over priced stickers. The store used to have free purchases but they removed this. The online store is special as it contains a free to play side game that has some very promising mechanics. They used to focus alot on this awasome side game and braught out alot of content and it was a constantly evolving game with beautiful mechanics. The store has now put a massive focus into the merch recently and has been pumping out payable asthetic items so the side game has been basically neglected for some time. At its core the store has expanded from 1 tab of stuff to 7 tabs that contain payable content like battle passes. Commics. Recolours. Weekly fetured. Collections. Heirlooms. Gambling bins. Stickers and so much more! Its safe to say the side game is no longer a priorty and fan favouret legends are over due reworks. The cheaters are out of control and the SBMM favours professional players and cheaters. New players are often paired with some of the highest ranked players in the game because they basically dont matter anymore. But this side game really is just a add on anyway as this impressive shop full of digital content is really at the heart and soul of the developers now :). Its nice to see free to play games come along side expensive online stores! Hopefully primark and Gucci can learn a thing by this and include free to play games on there shops to!

Apex is a good game.
Apex Legends is the best battle royale game I have ever played. Don’t hesitate to play this game, it has many characters and different play styles you can choose. Gameplay is extremely fast if I compare it to the other games, so you may have motion-sickness issues. Sometimes in-game events are boring but I don’t really care because I normally play casual one. Server is better than before, I don’t have server issues that much. I rarely see some hackers and cheaters in a game, probably this is the only problem that should be fixed.
About the in-game shop, this game is not pay to win, you can get characters by playing several matches but if you want skin or heirloom, you can pay for them. Most skin is perfectly designed but as I said you don’t have to pay for them.
The game story is worth following, some character stories according to the other character stories, I recommend you to read the character stories you will love for sure.
About balanced in-game, some characters are too powerful but they still do not get nerf. On the other hand, some characters are too weak but they still don’t buff those characters. New character’s gameplay is very interesting and powerful (except Rampart). I hope upcoming characters will be more creative than now.
The last thing I want to say is social in game. Unfortunately, most of the time I played I have seen many toxic players but I recommend you should mute or don’t pay attention to them. Few times I have seen a good person, I hope they will be nice to others too. If you have your friends playing with at least one person, it should be great (but don’t be rude to the other one in match, okay?).

amazing game for kids 10+
hello, speaking as a father of 2 kids(10 and 12) I find this video game very appropriate, almost no blood( you can turn it off) you can only talk with friends( have to exchange info in real life) and encourages teamwork patience and most of all having fun, and games can be long or short if you want perfect for small games or long sessions.
would recommend it to any kid looking to have casual or competitive fun with friends!

THE WORST BR EVER!!!
I’ll be real. This game has a good concept, but Respawn and EA did a terrible job of executing whatever they had in mind. It looks and sounds great but when it comes time to actually play the game, it’s literally the worst game in all of existence. This game could be SOOO GOOD BUT EA AND RESPAWN ARE MONEY HUNGRY GREEDY S.O.B’s!!! The matchmaking IS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!! Playing this game solo is absolutely traumatizing. It will drain your emotions, mental, wallet, everything. You are guaranteed dog water teammates every game, if you do get someone that knows what they are doing they don’t play as a team, people will complain about this but respawn and EA will literally just say “it’s a team based game so for anyone playing solo you’re just out of luck” on top of that you’re going up against triple stack or double stack pros/streamers 24/7 you are guarantee 1 game after 100 loses (not exaggerating being quite literal) to finally be able to put in a actual skill based lobby with players around or lower your skill level. I understand you’re not going to win every game or even get a kill every game but the way apex is set up, I can be on for literally the whole day without winning a single game, I’ll go for a good hour or two just dying off drop, not getting a killed, half the time my team mate is trolling and/or doesn’t know how to heal or shoot a gun.
It’s ridiculous!!!! It’s literally all day every day this happens!!! With no end in sight!!! If you try to go to the forums to complain about it EA will just block and delete your post!!!! They hide the games true flaws so well and have such fake reviews this is probably as real as it gets leaving a review on THIS site!! Absolutely trash game would never recommend, literally so many other BRs that are a 10000x better experience than apex legends cause apex is literally designed to use EOMM (Engagement Optimized Matchmaking) instead of skill based matchmaking, making it a terrible experience. You can’t play this game casually it’s non-existent, if you’re not sweating your ass off every game then there’s really no point to playing.

Honestly this is a game that is good for 10-11 year old’s, and almost any problem you find can be changed in the settings, even while other reviews say that there is lots of blood and gore, you can change this in the settings. I would give this game 5 starts, as it is perfect for 10 to 11 year old’s, and when they get older they still enjoy it, perfect game!

A good game for children 9-up
My daughter and son love this game, they bond and it helps them get there energy out, but i have a few problems, but they can all be fix via setting, like game chat and some violence.

Over two years ago, Respawn Entertainment released Apex Legends, a new battle royale game. Apex Legends takes place in the titanfall universe. It features a new set of varied characters, each with their own abilities and personalities. With tight controls, strategic shooting mechanics, and a very intense map to play, Apex Legends has taken the gaming industry by storm. Two years later, Apex Legends has both ups and downs. Some of them hopefully will not change, while others are in serious need of updating. So how will Apex Legends last 2 years after its initial release? nine0003
Legend and history
Apex Legends takes place years after Titanfall 2, when the Frontier War ended. Some legends, such as Bangalore, participated in the Frontier war, while others, such as Wraith, are not well understood. Regardless, the Titanfall universe looks different. Popular legends participate in Apex Legends games to become champions of the arena. During each season, Apex Legends introduces a new character, expanding the world and lore of the franchise. The characters have a deep history with the Apex Legends games and they each have their own goals and motivations. A Pathfinder Outlander story was recently released that gave us a glimpse of who Pathfinder is and what his purpose is. In the beginning, Wraith was given her own story, detailing how she got her powers. Being just a multiplayer game, Apex Legends keeps fans of the series with interesting characters. Even during the game, a character may come across a certain area and talk to another character in the game about it. The story isn’t deep or touching, but it does a good job of helping the player take care of these characters and the world of Apex Legends. nine0003
At its core, Apex Legends is a battle royale. The bottom line is that each chosen character is different from the other character. This is what makes Apex Legends so compelling. Before entering a match, players choose which character they want to play. The character they choose cannot be chosen by another player, and sometimes it’s better to have a spare character in case someone chooses the legends you play the most. Each legend has a set of abilities. A tactic that can be used more often, an ultimate that needs to be charged before use, and a passive ability. Let’s say you’re playing as Bloodhound and you enter an area where there might be enemies. Just turn on the scan ability to see if there are enemies in the area and where they are. Using his passive ability can allow you to see traces of where the team was before you entered the area. Using Bloodhounds Ultimate allows him to enter berserk mode and his visibility will turn grey, he will move faster and any enemies will turn red, making it easier to shoot. Using character abilities, especially together, can allow for fights that feel different at times. While I think the abilities are great and really fit the personality of the characters, Respawn in general likes to balance the abilities around the Legends win rate.
For example, not many people who play Rampart win games, so Respawn may adjust their abilities in a future update and improve them. This is a bit of a controversy in the community and I’m wondering if this will continue as more legends are added to the game. nine0003
Gameplay
Gameplay is where Apex Legends shines the most and is one of the reasons I’ve been playing it for almost 2 years. Movement in Apex is solid. Sliding and jumping are great sensations. Climbing walls and finding neat ways to climb buildings is always fun, especially in Worlds Edge. Although some legends move at a different speed than others, the game still retains tight control and feel.
The best part of Apex Legends is the gunplay. This is something I rarely say about any first person shooter. Each weapon in Apex Legends is unique and requires a different skill level for each weapon. R301 or Wingman require a different set of rules for interaction. One is more like a magnum that requires more accuracy, while the other is automatic and allows those who are satisfied with laser shots to pierce the armor of enemy units. There are different types of ammo that work with different weapons. R99 uses light ammo, so you should prioritize finding light ammo when looting. You can only carry 2 weapons at a time, and this requires you to only carry what you need for your particular outfit. It is generally wise to carry a good automatic weapon that will use one type of ammo, and as a second weapon that is better for long range combat. What’s more, you can get weapon loot items. Larger magazines for your weapon can help you fire more shots and improve your chances of hitting your target, while a standard stock will allow for faster handling and reduced sight drift. The attachments you get for your weapons come in different tiers, with gray being the base tier and purple or even gold being the best you can get. The higher the attachment level, the better your weapon will be. Most weapons in Apex can be equipped with a different set of scopes to help you aim, however not every scope is the best choice for which weapon you use.
All this makes the game very strategic, not weapons that shoot differently. nine0003
The looting system in Apex is also fantastic. When you take down the entire squad, you get the opportunity to loot all the items they were carrying. Any item you can use will be easier to find and select, and items you don’t need will be greyed out. This allows you to quickly find the right type of ammunition during looting. You also need to find a backpack to allow yourself to carry more heals, ammo or grenades, and of course they also have gray to gold tiers. nine0003
The best Apex Legends game mechanic added to the battle royale genre is the ping system. You can ping ammo, weapons, or attachments, let your teammates know where you’re pushing, and even alert them to a nearby enemy. The ping system is an important part of Apex Legends. There’s a whole wheel dedicated to specific pings, like telling your teammates that you’ll be watching a certain location’s defense zone. He prepares everyone for battle or makes them watch what comes next. The ping system is also great for people who don’t have a microphone or don’t want to communicate with other gamers. Using this mechanic to your advantage in a team that communicates through microphones will lead to great success. I can’t imagine Apex Legends without a ping system. That’s how good. nine0003
Overall, Apexs’ strength is in its gameplay, and heck, it’s good. It will really hook you into the game once you get the hang of the loot system and gunplay mechanics.
Battle Royale
The main mode in Apex Legends is Battle Royale. This mode is much faster than most modern Battle Royals. The maps are smaller and there are many areas where fighting can be a real hell. Just look at Hammond Labs on Olympus. This is an area that many players go through to get to the next circle and in turn engage in fights that can easily lead to this fight being easily split into third place. There is a champion at the start of every match, and that champion is usually the player who won their last match with more kills and/or damage dealt. Each match will have a kill leader. Usually this person will either kill the entire squad or get a high number of kills in a match. Battle royale in Apex Legends is fun and exciting, however third parties can be really annoying. Even after the new Arena mode was added, the Battle Royale mode is still one of the best. nine0003
Arenas
Arenas have been added to Respawn with the new Legacy update. This mode is very similar to shooters like Valorant and Counter Strike. You start buying weapons of your choice using crafting materials. Once your weapon is selected and the timer expires, you and your team engage in combat with the enemy unit. Arenas are very fun and strategic. Knowing which weapons to choose and how to use in the Arena maps is tricky. One wrong move could spell the end for you or your squad for that round. Arenas have potential and a ranked arena mode should be added in the future, which means Apex Legends will have 2 modes geared towards pro players. This is an amazing achievement from Respawn that provides a brighter future. nine0003
Level Design
Like any other Battle Royal, Apex Legends’ maps and level design have undergone some changes over the years. Some good and some not so good. For the first time, Apex launched one map called Kings Canyon. The first thing many players noticed was how small the map was compared to other battle royale games on the market. It really worked in favor of Apex. This made the games faster and more intense. However, over time, the map became difficult to play. Constant 3 rd The parties always got into fights. Once more experienced players got to know Kings Canyon, it became easy to take advantage of the smaller maps. It also didn’t help that the mining pool at the time was quite small. I remember at the beginning of the Kings Canyon season, I ran through several rooms looking for a gun and found only attachments and grenades. It was in Skull City, and for those who know, Skull City had a lot of buildings to loot. Eventually, Skull City and the Dome were destroyed in season 5 when Loba was introduced as a new legend. Although Kings Canyon has gone through a lot of changes (mostly areas being destroyed), it still remains a difficult map to play due to its size and ease of being a third party during a battle. nine0003
Worlds Edge was introduced in Season 3 and was a big surprise. Shortly after the release, Apex received a new card. Worlds Edge is by far the best map in Apex Legends. The map is much larger and has the best variety of loot locations. This makes encounters less stressful, as the need to find weapons and armor takes some precedence over combat, at least for the first minute or two when you land in a certain area. What’s also nice is the diverse environments in Worlds Edge. Some areas have a lot of lava and it looks like you are next to a volcano, there are big cities, grassy fields and even snow. The map is large and offers several ways to get to the area on foot. Worlds Edge is the map of choice for professional Apex players as it offers plenty of options to contain your squad and choose where and how to fight. nine0003
Olympus was recently introduced to Apex Legends in Season 7 alongside Horizon. The card was received very positively and, perhaps, I liked it the most. There are several diverse but beautiful places on Olympus. Visiting Bonsai Towers or Oasis is great, but can be deadly if you don’t have situational awareness. The environment may not be as varied as Worlds Edge, but there are plenty of loot spots in the same area, so finding weapons isn’t that hard. This map features a hovering ship and is great for quickly entering the circle if your team is too far away. 3 rd parties are still popular on Olympus, but not as often as Kings Canyon. The map hasn’t changed much since its inception, which is a good thing. Sometimes too many changes can ruin a map (see Kings Canyon).
Economy
Apex Legends has 4 different currencies that can be very difficult to deal with. Apex Coins come first. Some coins can be added during the battle pass, but mostly you need to buy them in the Apex store. They can be used to unlock new legends, purchase premium skins from the store, and purchase Apex Packs, which are technically loot boxes. Then we have legend tokens. They are mostly earned by playing Apex Legends and if you play enough you can purchase the new legend that comes out every season with just your Legend Coins. They can also be used to purchase a premium weapon or character skin from the Apex Store, however this usually requires you to have a Legendary skin similar to the one you are purchasing and you need Apex Coins to purchase that skin. Legendary crafting materials are used to do just that, creating premium weapon skins, character skins, banners, trackers, emotes, holo sprays, or new quirks. They can also be earned in the battle pass, but usually you have to hit with the Apex Pack to get a lot, and usually a lot for only a few hundred. Legendary skins cost at least 1,200 legendary materials to craft that particular item. Finally, we have extremely rare and very hard to find heirloom shards.
Heirlooms are special items that a character will wear and use when they don’t have an item. This is a great way to show your love for this character. Each season contains a limited-time event that will feature a plethora of weapon and character skins to unlock, as well as a family heirloom for a character who doesn’t already have one. Players can spend over $100 to get all the skins and finally get the heirloom, however, it’s an expensive purchase and most of them don’t. Players can wait to get Relic Shards through the Apex Pack, however the chances of getting them are extremely rare. You have a 1 in 500 chance of getting 150 shards to unlock 1 relic. Personally, I have 2 heirlooms, 1 for the bloodhound on Xbox and 1 for the ghost on PC. Unfortunately, Respawn doesn’t support cross-progress at the moment, which forces players to choose where to spend their time unlocking these valuable items and legends. nine0003
Technical staff
Apex Legends is a multiplayer game and FPS performance is more important than how it looks. However, its performance leaves much to be desired. On the Series S, the game mostly ran at a solid 60fps, which is really good considering the One S barely supports 60fps. I saw some drops in the 40s in a landing craft over the End of Worlds, and there were some drops in Fractured City until the mid 50s. On Kings Canyon, I also noticed that the frame rate dropped to 40 when I was in the shuttle and using the Ultimate Bloodhounds. As for Series X, other members of the Xbox Era have reported very consistent 60fps across the board. However, neither version is optimized for the next generation, Apex is just aware of some of the additional GPU capabilities in each console. On PC, performance was also excellent, but again leaves a lot to be desired. On my 3070, I was easily able to hit 200 fps. However, my game is limited to 144 frames per second to match the refresh rate of my monitors. There are some disadvantages. I enjoy streaming Apex Legends and playing with OBS can be quite challenging.
When streaming Apex at 1080p 60fps and running Apex mostly on medium settings, my viewers reported that the stream stuttered a lot. Even lowering Apex Legends to the lowest settings didn’t help. Only by lowering my stream to max resolution 900p, I got good performance.
Respawn has said it will release a next-gen version of Apex Legends, however no timeline has been revealed for when this will happen. The developer has said that high frame rates on the new consoles will be prioritized and their goal is 120fps. Right now, players can enjoy more stable FPS and faster load times across the board thanks to an SSD.
Apex Legends is indeed suffering from server issues and of course PC hackers. Sometimes the problems go even further. The Xbox Era Write «Proven» staff said Apex lag can be very serious at times, and I’ve also seen this happen. On PC, cheaters are in full force with their aim bots. Some rogues even get to the highest rank Predator. The fact that this can happen so easily and quickly without being detected is alarming. I’ve seen popular streamers have someone join their group every time they enter the lobby just to troll them. There have even been cases where hackers have taken over players’ accounts through Origin and blocked them. Some hackers may even take over the lobby. A few weeks ago, when I was broadcasting, a racist slur was spammed on the screen for everyone in the lobby to see. It doesn’t really provide a safe environment for everyone who plays Apex Legends, especially minorities. Respawn seems to have fixed these issues for the new Legacy 9 update.season», however the question is, what other feats are there in Apex Legends or even at the end of EA? Apex Legends is not a new game, it’s over 2 years old and having exploits like this this far is not a good thing.
Perhaps one of Apex Legends’ biggest drawbacks is the lack of cross-progression. There have been a lot of multiplayer games lately with excellent cross-progression. Namely Fortnite and even Call of Duty Warzone. This is a feature that allows players the flexibility to transfer their hard-earned money to another platform if they so desire. I played Apex Legends a lot on my Xbox One. I bought a Bloodhounds family heirloom which was expensive, as well as a lot of legendary character and weapon skins. This also includes decent stats and a level cap of 500. On PC, Apex Legends is essentially a completely different account. I don’t have any unlocks or purchases on Xbox. I have Wraiths Heirloom and a few Legendary unlocks, but none of my purchases or Xbox unlocks are transferable. To show how bad it is, Halo: The Master Chief Collection has cross-progression for PC and console. When I first booted up Halo MCC on my PC, all my stats from 2014 onwards were like nothing. When I unlocked the recent Rhino armor from Halo 3, it also showed up on both my console and PC. The settings needed to be reconfigured, but no matter what, my progress was still there and I didn’t need to spend more time playing to earn it all again. Respawn said back in February that cross-progression was still a long way off. It doesn’t give any confidence that Respawn wants to implement this feature at all.

Conclusion
