Outlast test: The Outlast Trials on Steam

Quality & tests

Outlast stands for the most stringent requirements on quality and functionality. To ensure this, we test all Outlast® products from our licensed brand partners before they reach the market. We repeat this testing at regular intervals. Outlast also certifies suppliers in every part of the supply chain. This commitment to outstanding quality is reflected in Outlast® products and leads to high consumer satisfaction.

Has the Outlast® thermo-technology been processed correctly?

For licensed partners, we test whether a product meets the Outlast criteria in our laboratory. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) provides information on whether the technology has been applied correctly and processed according to our strict instructions.

Depending on the product and the respective purpose, we test using various procedures:

  • Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)
  • Climatic chambers
  • Field tests
  • Standardized testing procedures by international research and testing institutes
  • “C. Russ” method
  • Standard 100 from Oeko-Tex®

If you want to find out more about our tests, get in touch with us.

DSC

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) is a standardized technique recognized around the world, which measures the thermal effects on materials during heating or cooling.

  • The DSC equipment warms a textile sample in a controlled manner before cooling it down. It continuously records the temperature during this procedure.
  • The equipment measures the amount of energy required to melt the microencapsulated natural wax. The amount of energy released when cooling the sample is also recorded. The DSC equipment thus provides information about temperature-specific areas of use. The latent thermal energy capacity can therefore also be determined, i.e. the heat that is absorbed, stored, and ultimately released again by the material.

Climatic chambers

Outlast Technologies conducts numerous tests on materials or garments in which various environments are simulated. It is important to create controlled conditions here, which is why Outlast regularly uses climatic chambers in its research. This allows Outlast® materials to be put through their paces in various climatic situations. Testing can also be conducted according to standardized test conditions, such as ASTM or ISO standards.

If you would like to find out more, get in touch with us.

Field tests

Field tests deliver important insights from practice. They can uncover strengths as well as weaknesses in products. This makes them a highly relevant and important component of product development for Outlast. Field tests require a large quantity of subjects and data to obtain valid knowledge and reliable statements. As a result, we regularly take part in extensive field test programs in which products equipped with Outlast® undergo practical testing. If you would like more information about this, please get in touch with us.

Consumers of products in which Outlast® has been processed frequently report of their experiences with proactive temperature regulation in home textiles, apparel, shoes, etc.

Triumph motorcycle equipment

“On my 2,282-mile tour of many of the most beautiful roads in Europe, there was every kind of weather, from rain of Biblical proportions to temperatures of 30 °C (86 °F). The Triumph trousers and jacket with an Outlast® lining worked perfectly,” says test rider Joseph Brooks from Warwickshire. “Great protection combined with fantastic regulation of body heat – a really profitable combination.”

“C. Russ” measuring method

The microclimate on the skin is significantly determined by the amount of moisture present. The less moisture is involved, the better a feel-good climate can be produced. Conventional heat management systems attempt to wick away the moisture that has developed. Outlast® materials stop the moisture from developing in the first place.

To confirm this, we turned to INSIDE CLIMATE GmbH.  Led by C. Russ, this research institute developed a special technology that makes the moisture in a person’s microclimate visible and shows it in images.

This THG AreaView technology allows Outlast to confirm moisture reductions and demonstrate the performance of its materials.

Standard 100 from OEKO-TEX®

Skin-friendly materials tested for harmful substances have always been a matter of course for us, as the properties of our textiles work best when worn as close to the skin as possible. Most Outlast® materials meet the quality mark Standard 100 from OEKO-TEX®. This means they are even approved for baby products. Standard 100 from OEKO-TEX® represents a globally recognized test for harmful substances on the product as well as compliance with environmental standards during the production process.

15 effective tips to help you survive life’s trials — Interesting — Leisure and recreation

Life is not always rosy. Sooner or later, everyone has a period of passing various strength tests. If at this stage you find yourself in the abyss of everyday problems or in a losing streak, use the proven rules that will help you steadfastly overcome temporary troubles.

1. Keep a positive mood

Most often, we notice what is puzzled in a given life period. Bodybuilders see a lot of their own kind around, those who want to buy a private house regularly notice exactly the kind of houses that they have always dreamed of.

In fact, there are no more jocks or private houses. The fact is that the brain can filter information; and when a person sees the desired object, the brain signals what to pay attention to. This reaction has been proven by experts in psychology.

It follows from this: the more you expect bad things, the more you will get them.

If a person expects troubles and troubles in any area, then they will seep into life from all sides, driving into a stressful and depressive state. Therefore, it is important to think about the good and be aimed at a positive outcome of affairs, setting the brain with the necessary “settings”. Then you will notice more good things around, and this will give you the strength to calmly reason, solving the surging problems.

2. Has life given you a sour lemon? Make him lemonade too!

The expression, though hackneyed, but effective. Of course, there are times when it is impossible to radically change something and influence something. Then you need to change your approach to the situation. In other cases, it may be necessary to take the right steps or look at the situation from a different angle in order to make the right decision.

3. Own mistakes should not upset and stop, but teach

When you make a mistake, you do not need to get depressed, lose hope and be upset. It is necessary to understand what exactly led to the defeat. Analyze the situation, find out what events preceded the bad outcome of affairs, put all your steps “on the shelves”. In this way, you will find out what exactly caused the failure.

4. Correct your miscalculations and mistakes

Finding out what mistakes led to failure, try to correct them. If something cannot be changed at this stage of life, then change it as soon as the opportunity arises. This is a sure way not only to eliminate troubles, but also to self-improvement.

5.

Don’t forget to be grateful

Thank life for the experience gained and the people who help you out and do not leave you in trouble. Think about the people close to you: what they taught you, how they support you, and how you would be without their help.

Write a short letter expressing your gratitude for having a certain person in your life. Send or read this letter to him. Believe me, the troubles will not seem so big compared to the life values that you have.

6. Focus on what you can control

It happens that you have made many attempts to correct a bad situation. But in the end, she didn’t change, but your hands dropped, and you stopped believing in your strength to change anything.

Find and take what you can. This is one of the effective methods of dealing with your own helplessness. Of course, even if this does not solve the main problem, relief will soon be felt, especially if you take on more cases that you can control.

7. Praise yourself for your achievements and the path you have traveled

Often you focus on a goal or on the current situation and do not look back to praise yourself for the path you have traveled and the achievements you have made. When you remember all this, you will feel a surge of strength to continue the path to the goal and solve problems.

8. Communicate with those who understand you

In a difficult situation, it is important that there are people nearby who support you and understand. You need their care and love in order not to give up and feel loved and significant. It is also important to hear advice and truth from such people, even if it is not always pleasant. This will help you look at the situation from a different perspective.

If for some reason there were no such people near you, find communities in which people faced the same difficulties. They will support you, share experiences that will help you survive troubles.

9. Know how to let go and forgive

Sometimes it happens that a specific person is to blame for your troubles. You walk around and think: “He ruined everything, if he wasn’t there, everything would be different.” Such thoughts, filled with hostility and hatred, drive one into negativity and exhaust oneself. Such a reaction, although logical, does not lead to anything good.

Instead of focusing on the negative, you need to look for ways to resolve the situation. Suppose a person is guilty, but you do not crave revenge on the rain under which you got wet or the sea in which you are frozen. Instead, you will take steps to get home quickly, get rid of your wet clothes, and stay warm. The culprit should be left behind as soon as possible and focus on more important matters.

10. Don’t make yourself guilty

If a black streak has come in life, this does not mean that you are bad or made fatal mistakes. Bad times happen to everyone. Accept it with your head held high and overcome it with minimal losses.

11. Know how to enjoy ordinary things and moments

For many, a difficult test is the deterioration of living conditions. When things are going well for you, you travel, go to restaurants, buy fashionable clothes. But when things go wrong, you have to give up many pleasures and comforts, and this causes sadness and despondency.

Even in such a situation, it is important to be able to enjoy ordinary things and moments. Instead of a restaurant, go to the forest for a barbecue with friends, instead of traveling abroad, go on an excursion to one of the neighboring cities. Such alternatives will also bring joy.

12. Reassess your priorities and values

Life’s troubles allow you to reassess priorities and values. Think about what is really important to you and what you can do without. Give up unnecessary things that only burden you, and you will see that life will become easier.

13. Be patient

At a young age, it seems to many that you can immediately reach the top. People set high goals for themselves initially, try to achieve them with a jerk, but they get burned, close in themselves and often start to just go with the flow. It is possible and necessary to set high goals, but you should go towards them gradually, sometimes in small steps. Remember that there is a time for everything, and to achieve an important goal, you need patience and the ability not to give up in the face of difficulties.

14. There is always a choice

Even when some situation cannot be controlled, one must remember that there is always a choice. It lies in your approach, opinion on the situation, reaction and measures taken by you. You yourself choose what to do and how to relate to everyday situations.

15. Take care of yourself

Always take care of yourself, especially when troubles have overcome and it seems that there is no strength left at all. Treat yourself to a trip to the cinema or a cafe, buy a thing that you have long wanted to buy, sleep well, visit the gym or swimming pool. Such amenities will not let you get discouraged and will bring positive emotions into your life.

Remember that all bad things come to an end, and the sun always comes out after the storm.

What helped me survive the ordeal

The death of a loved one, a series of catastrophes, someone’s great grief, from which one cannot move away … From time to time, life experiences tragedies for each of us. And in order not to lose the sense of meaning in it, we need to find a foothold. First person stories.

Trials harden us, make us stronger? This is far from always the case. How to take a hit, not to break, but also not to hide your pain, not to deny trouble, persuading yourself that nothing happened and life goes on? Our experts have repeatedly reminded us how important it is to live through the period of grief . .. consciously. “When life takes away the most precious thing from us, we can close and stop feeling, because it is unbearably painful,” says existential psychotherapist Svetlana Krivtsova. And then depression awaits us. And we can open our hearts and live our loss — all, to the last drop: and self-pity, and resentment, and loneliness, which now no one can help. It is not an easy path that requires patience and the freedom to cry to wash the wound.»

«Why don’t you want to commit suicide?» psychologist Viktor Frankl asked his patients. This strange question was supposed to prove that logotherapy was able to connect the threads of a broken life. Frankl — a former prisoner of concentration camps; his parents, brother and wife died there… How could he continue to believe that life was worth living? “There are three ways to find meaning,” he explained. – Create, work, produce: this is the feeling of accomplishment. Maintain emotional connections, communicate with nature and art: this is the feeling of love. Develop a positive attitude to accept what we cannot change: that feeling of suffering.”* Our heroes are talking about exactly this: by drawing, communicating with God, helping others, they gained faith in the meaningfulness of life.

* V. Frankl «Say yes to life!» (Sense, 2009).

Tatyana Lapteva, 43 years old, artist, decorator

“I started painting again and realized: I will live”

Heart attack – with such a diagnosis on August 2, 2008, Tatyana’s husband was taken from work in an ambulance. In the car, he talked to her on the phone. The connection was interrupted, and she could not get through again. Soon Tatyana got a call back and was told that her husband Anton had died.

“There was a feeling that life was over. I was only enough to take my daughter to kindergarten, return home and climb headlong under the covers. I didn’t want anything, I didn’t even think about work, especially since my work is creative projects, magazines, shooting, where you need to invent, feel . ..

I lived in a state of «I can’t» for almost a year. And probably it was right to get sick, give yourself time, don’t rush anywhere, don’t break yourself.

I returned to life gradually. One day I suddenly realized that I could breathe, that I had the strength to do a big project. I painted a huge fence for my former customers, money appeared, and we left for a couple of months in a small Italian town, where a year earlier I had learned to work with mosaics. Then I returned to Italy again — to make another order: a mosaic panel. But it was still just work. I suddenly wanted to draw and create. I was talking on the phone and mechanically tore open the box — a package of children’s breakfast cereals. Then she took scissors, a pencil, paints … Almost immediately it became clear to me that this was not just like that, something had changed. By the way, I then hung this “box” in my daughter’s room as a memory of that feeling — I believed that I would live! And I began to draw. Not like before — in oil, acrylic, thick, bright, joyful … No, watercolor appeared in my life — transparent, watery, iridescent. Working with it is fascinating: you wet a sheet of paper, add a color, it spreads, and quite unpredictably … Then you add another one, which turns into something completely different … And suddenly a picture appears from these spots. I look at the paper, at the paint, at the weird patterns it leaves. And as if I am immersed in the drawing: the sensations change, the pain goes away. And it becomes easier, there is a feeling that you are swimming in the sea … «

Artur Vaksyan, 39, seller of church books

“From black and white, my world turned into color again”

Arthur recalls what happened 10 years ago (father’s death, divorce, job loss): «There was a lot of pain and unanswered questions.» Departure into religion with his head, complete immersion in a different reality was an attempt to comprehend what was happening.

“Now I can’t even remember exactly why I went to church then. I was drawn there by an unknown force: I needed to go into a space endowed with a sacred meaning. And I began to go to church, defended services from 8 to 12, not understanding at all what was happening there … In general, entering Orthodoxy was long and painful for me. On the other hand, the first years in the church are the happiest time. The world went from black and white to color. There was a feeling of unearthly joy — this is called «calling Grace». She heals very well. And it really changes a person. At first, I fell into some kind of violent religiosity, which in my case is generally ridiculous: there is not a drop of Slavic blood in me, there were no Orthodox in my family … There were thoughts of leaving for a monastery, becoming a priest (my name is still), I was active missionary. Christianity requires complete self-giving. “Whoever loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and whoever loves a son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me” (Matthew 10:37). It sounds very harsh, but there is a deep meaning here: it is impossible to spiritually build your life if you do not completely and completely give your heart to God. What is the difficulty for modern man? In what he can easily confuse — to give his heart not to God, but to traditions. To understand the difference, you need to understand all your life, dig like an archaeologist … But at first we simply absorb all the meanings, without much selection, and this suppresses the personality, affects the feelings, the emotional appearance. This is probably why one day the question naturally arises: who am I, who have I become, where have I come? It was like they put me in a refrigerator for five years, and then they pulled me out, and I began to thaw. Something came back «from there» — for example, almost lost relationships with loved ones — but something new also appeared: it seems that I became more humane. I would like to call this process growing up … In any case, it’s good that all this happened to me.

Anastasia Kolesnikova, 39, founder of the Life Foundation for Children with Cancer (deti-life.ru)

“Caring for others, I overcome my helplessness”

After seeing the reports from Beslan in September 2004, Anastasia I felt shame and guilt. The feeling of closeness of tragedy and the injustice of life was so acute that she could not stand aside.

“I still remember the pain and horror that overwhelmed me when I read about everything that happened in Beslan. I constantly thought that my own children are alive and well, they have everything, and they got into a terrible mess, lost their relatives, their life, health and psyche were crippled … Dovlatov’s hero, seeing how a beggar woman gets out of the trash thrown ball and carries it to his son, said: «I wanted to give her child the best toys, because I was guilty and wanted to pay off.» I also felt something similar. When they began to collect money on the Internet in order to buy and give toys to Beslan people, I immediately decided to get involved. True, it was scary to go to the hospital, but then I was asked to take some of the toys (there were just a lot of them) to the oncology department … And there I saw small bald children, after radiation and chemotherapy, wearing masks … Opening my mouth, I listened to the stories of their mothers. And when someone asked to bring a typewriter, I myself did not notice how I promised. The next time other children came up to me: “And me?” I began to go to the hospital every week, the requests multiplied, and I could no longer buy everything with my own money. Once I met a famous singer in the hospital. Actually, it’s hard for me to communicate with strangers, I don’t even know how I managed to take his phone number … Then I met Karina Mikhailova, and together we created a fund: organizations that wanted to help could not give cash to Nastya or Karina . Our foundation is already 6 years old. Over and over again, overcoming my reluctance to see suffering, forcing myself to make contact with people, inventing ways to make someone’s life easier, I learned to cope with feelings of shame and helplessness.
