NHL 14: Tips and Strategies to Improve Your Game | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors

The improved A.I. in NHL 14 can give you fits if you don’t play smart and work to master the controls. After playing the game consistently since it released via EA Season Ticket, and consulting a few resources online, I’ve found ways to fix a few mistakes.

Yes, this is still a video game, but like any real simulation, you have to be true to the sport to have success. I’ve played the NHL series in some capacity for 20 years, but the last two years of the series have forced me to raise my awareness on the virtual ice.

From gaining and maintaining possession to defense and physical play, here’s what I’ve learned to improve my game.

Don’t Get Caught Chasing the Puck

The old school seek-and-destroy approach you used to be able to employ with NHL games is a thing of the past. The CPU will slice you to pieces with quick passes if you go this route. In addition to that, the realistic penalty system will keep your penalty-killing unit on the ice if you’re overly aggressive.

The most important rule I’ve learned is to matchup when the puck is in your defending zone. Sometimes the virtual goon in you can get enamored with plastering the man with the puck, but this will lead to consistent one-timer attempts.

No goalie is good enough to withstand this type of pressure. Find your matchup with whomever you’re controlling and make a pass to him difficult.

Playing the Live the Life mode helped me a lot in this area. The blue arrow shows you where you need to be on the ice. After a few games in this mode at different positions, the assignments began to stick with me, even when I played in Be a GM mode.

Don’t Forget to Block Shots

Another way to take pressure off the goalie is use the LB button (or L1 or PS3) to block shot attempts. When you use this strategy in front of an opponent who is ready to take a shot, you can absorb the attempt or redirect it.

It may result in a broken stick, but it is a great way to keep opponents from getting a shot on goal or finding the back of the net.

You Need to Win Faceoffs

This was perhaps the weakest area of my game over the last two versions. I never won the draw, and my overall play suffered.

Here’s a video that helped me. Halodiego1509 breaks it down and explains how you can use various strategies to win faceoffs.

If you’re constantly losing faceoffs—especially in your defending zone—you’re going to consistently struggle to contain your opponents.

Mastering this is essential.

Physical Play and Fighting

There is an obvious risk-reward element to using the game’s new Enforcer and fighting engines. You can level guys at every opportunity and be treated to the new animations provided by the improvements to the physics engine, but this approach doesn’t necessarily equate to success.

You have to pick your spots to lower the boom and to fight.

Clean hits on guys who have the puck are the safest way to go, but even then, an opposing team’s enforcer may choose to engage you in a fight. Now an energy boost for each squad is at stake each time you fight.

In a close game, this can impact the bottom line.

If you do find yourself in a fight, it is smart to utilize all of the controls available in the new mechanics. This is especially the case if you’re tangling with a bigger guy, or the opponent simply has a higher fighting skills rating.

Getting punch happy without using the RT (or R2) to dodge attacks will leave you lying on the ice. NHL 14 is a game made up of several smaller games. The more of them you master, the better you’ll be.

Reddit — Dive into anything

I read a lot of things about Be a GM on here but not much lately. Considering that is my go-to ever year I thought I would tell you guys some tips.

I have practically played this mode every year since I got the game, I don’t remember if it was on Lemieux’s cover in 2002 but about since . I even remember NHL 2k5 (one of the greatest hockey games of all time) where you could customize your office, I thought that was the the coolest thing as 11-12 year old. As the games progressed so did I, even going as far as writing down numbers just so I can try to make everyone fit under the cap. Some of it is quite time consuming so I think I have a few tips to speed up the process if you wanted to finish all 25 years. I do not play any games, I use online for that. I started with the kings and my wins over the last 12 seasons are 46, 42, 49, 52, 55, 58, 57, 63, 59, 61, 58, 57.

I usually only have 26-30 guys signed so I always pick up players on waivers if they have 1 year remaining, not really old where he is untradeable (which is rare but watch out for the 38 year old 77 overall D with a 3.8 million dollar contract.). At the very least you can trade these players later for pretty enough value to swing a close trade or you can package them for a 2nd rounder.

Two, Goaltending, my defense is number one in the league almost every year. I recommend getting Quick because he has a 10 year contract at 5.8 Mill and gets to 90. Since I am in 2026 so I have since traded him for a younger game created player who is a 91. Even though he is at 10.7 million a year for 7 or 8 years. Goaltending is huge.

Third, draft picks. When you know at the end of the year you have a lot of players with 1 year left on their contract most of them are going to ask for a raise, specially those coming out of their entry-level contracts. Make sure to trade before the trade deadline for high draft picks so you don’t lose any to free agency. Be aware of this every trade deadline. If you want to get a head start at this trade your guys at the beginning of the year with a team that finished in the bottom 5 the year before. Also if you trade for a first rounder 3+ years in to the future the value is substantially lower and worth the pay off if you play as many seasons as I do.

Four, roster. I usually play 5 defensemen (doughty on 1st and 3rd lines, gets 30+ minutes a game and has 6-7 Norris Trophies in 11 years.) This means I can have a 77 or something as my «6th dressed defensemen» that is really cheap and plays a couple of minutes on the p.k. sometimes. This also applies to forwards, I drafted an 87 overall forward with 5 gold stars and played him on the 1st and 4th lines. He got 82 points in 82 games his rookie season, 55 goals and 111 points his second season and his third season he had 41 goals and 118 points. The only way for players to get better on this game is ice time so in another instance, lets say you have a younger guy like a 21 year old 82 overall with high potential, he is not going to be on your first line, but if you play him on your third and fourth line he will get about 23 minutes a game so he will progresses just as well as if he was in the AHL.

GM reputation is interesting, almost impossible to get out of a bad one but if you make the right trade anyone will take it.

Most importantly though is resigning players. I hate how the game only gives you about a week to do so and you can’t do it earlier like in real life. However, I finally calculated it where if you won Stanley Cup the most previous season, you can offer between 86-88% their demands. I recommend taking the years they want because mathematically it will be a lower overall cap hit then what he wants at other years. Sometimes if i have left over cap I will add a few years to a high potential young player in hopes to get more bang for my buck as he progresses.

Draft picks: I almost always only have 1st or 2nd round draft picks. This doesn’t seem to be to big of a deal for me because if there is a prospect drafted by another team that is good enough to play in the NHL right away I will try to do whatever I can to trade for him so I can have a player with an entry-level contract (>$1 million) for 3 years. This is where you have to be careful with your cap though. If you have a lot of players with one year left on their contract (most looking for raises) this guy and another few young guys with entry level contracts expiring in the 77-83 range you simply will not be able to hold on to everybody.

If you have extra cap at the end of the year Free-agents are great for later trades down the season. I almost never sign any to long term contracts because the numbers are so inflated July 1st when free agency kicks off. But if i have 4.5 million dollars and i need to fill a 2nd line d role, I’d get a player like and old Cody Franson 84 overall for one year and later try to package him for a younger player with potential because I will most likely not have that same cap space the next year.

If you are going to pick the Kings of the start I still have kopitar (up to 90 sustained it for long period) as my second line center, though he’s close to retiring, I held on to Clifford (got up to an 83) for about 9 years and he’s a great third line LW. I also held on to Doughty (playing him 1st and 3rd d lines, got up to 90) I already mentioned quick having the ability to get up to a 90 and at his contract you don’t want to lose him. I kept Voynov for awhile untill he cost to much but he got up to an 86 if you can manage to fit him in to your cap. I remember trading Richards and a package for Nugent Hopkins who got to a 92 and Carter for Evander Kane (Although Kane did not get past 87 the age was still a good trade) Managed to get Bateschi or whoever from Calgary, he plays top line minutes and is an 88 overall still 11 years later.

Sorry if this was a little bit of a ramble, but I thought I could keep not studying for my test tomorrow and write about something I truly enjoy for a little while. If there is one thing to take away from this is the 86-88% contract rule it will save you a boat load of time come contract signing season. This will make trading for other big name players harder 5+ years in to the mode because other teams give such ridiculous contracts to their stars. Which is fine, it just means you have to trade for the younger ones with potential and sign them yourself.

Thanks for reading, I hoped this helped.

NHL is one of those series that are polished from year to year, the lineups of teams change, but in general it is always a worthy sports sim that can hardly surprise. This year the series celebrated its 20th anniversary!

It is pointless to hide that hockey in Russia is more than just a game. Our team has won world championships more than once in recent years, and at the Olympics, we believe, it will compete for gold. We have great players of the past, outstanding athletes of our time and, of course, talents. nine0031 Continental Hockey League is great, but all hockey players, young and old, are drawn overseas: in NHL , to Canada and the USA.

NHL 14, first of all, greets the player with an unusual star on the box. Haven’t been on the cover of the goalkeeper. The most interesting thing is that for the second year in a row the spectators choose the player on the cover and in the final they chose from two hockey players — both goalkeepers, and for the second year in a row the “Russians” lose here! Unfortunately, last year was not on the cover Evgeni Malkin , and this year our goalkeeper lost to the winner — Sergey Bobrovsky . As a result, on the cover of NHL 14 — Martin Brodur , goaltender New Jersey Devils and, what to hide, a living legend (after all, he is 41 years old and he is still good in the frame).

In the game itself, there have been many interesting improvements. For example, collision physics appeared here, which works on almost the same technology that is used in FIFA Player Impact Engine . The internal engine has also undergone changes, but, the most fun, fights! In NHL , fights are akin to a good fighting game, because Enforcer Engine from the Fight Night series is responsible for combat here, of course, lightweight, but the fight tutorial lasts longer than learning everything else.

Since the game is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, EA Sports decided to celebrate in a special way in . We made a retro mode NHL 94 by stick control and two buttons. Outwardly, it looks very funny and fun. But entertainment, of course, is not for the whole year. nine0003

But there is an updated Be a Pro Live the Life : the bottom line is that you can start with CHL (College Hockey League) , go through all the hard ones, including the draft and start a career in NHL . Among other things, you will have a lot of interviews, and the answers to the questions will influence the attitude of fans, players, management and even your family members. Throw in the leveling system and goals for the seasons, and you will understand that it can be at least interesting. nine0003

There is also fun-lure for long hours — hockey Ultimate Team (collect a dream team from packs or buy players at the auction and play online or offline) and EA Sports Hockey League (play online matches supporting your favorite command).

And one more mode — Winter classic . Classic outdoor matches — real hockey: the way it started. This year there is an option to play the classics of 2011 and 2012 — that is, what really happened!

Played in NHL 14 interesting, especially in the updated Be a Pro . Starting in the third line, as a sixteen-year-old player in the godforsaken team Huskies in CHL , gradually making your way to the top — you understand the spirit of hockey and feel like a real boy looking for the way to his dream. Interesting to say nothing.

The graphics in the game are good, it remains to wait for the next gene and NHL on the Ignite engine to see the difference in the picture and physics. Dynamics — it’s a little lacking here — on the other hand, we played in a realistic mode, but you can switch to increased speed and, so to speak, to a killer mode. Probably, in this case, the game will feel more «meaty» and exciting. nine0003

It is impossible not to mention the excellent soundtrack of the game, which contained the rock hits of this year. In the menu, he listens perfectly, but during the match — where without a classical organ?

The Be a Pro mode has some quirks: when you sit down on the bench, it is not always possible to skip the time until the next shift, and even when there is such a possibility, loading between shifts turns out to be quite long: because of this, too there is a loss of momentum. In addition, when I fouled and sat down for rudeness for 5 minutes plus a suspension for the rest of the game, I had to miss the «time until the next shift» while sitting in the penalty box, and did not go to the tribune room, as happens in real life. In a regular game, you won’t see these moments when playing as each member of the team. nine0003

NHL 14 is a fairly standard sports sim that doesn’t pick up stars from the sky like EA Sports does. We are waiting for the jump on the next gene, while we learn to skate and send the puck into the goal. Surprisingly, the main improvement of the game in terms of gameplay — touched the fight. Fighting of NHL turned out well, but still it is a rather strange bonus for the series’ twentieth anniversary. But the anniversary mode and the restored two-button control are like candles on an anniversary cake, which are very easy and very quick to blow out after playing enough. While the cake itself offers different toppings from standard seasons to a personal career that literally starts with hockey diapers.

NHL 14. Make your hockey players fight for real!

Photo: © www.easports.com

Hockey players of Los Angeles and Chicago dropped their gloves and got into hand-to-hand combat. Blow after blow, and blood appears on the face of one of the players. A brawler who started a brawl is sent to the penalty box. Such a scene was played in the hockey simulator NHL 14 from Electronic Arts at the presentation of the game at the E3 exhibition in Los Angeles. Apparently, they still can’t move away from the defeat of the Kings in the Stanley Cup semi-finals from the Black Hawks. nine0003

The simulator is getting closer to reality with each new version. This year, when a fight starts, hockey players deal hard blows to each other, they can grab each other by the jersey, you can watch a replay of the fight filmed from different cameras — just like in a TV broadcast.

This was made possible thanks to technologies borrowed from FIFA football simulators and fighting without rules. Collision Physics is a technology based on the same principles as the famous Player Impact Engine from FIFA that allows you to shoot and increases the realistic behavior of the puck. The new control system using the left stick makes shooting much easier and more efficient. The Enforcer Engine, a technology borrowed from the Fight Night series, reveals the anatomy of hockey fights. For the first time in the history of the NHL simulator, the difference in height, strength of hockey players is taken into account and new mechanics of power moves are applied. nine0003

Open video

During the test of the new simulator, we had to create a fight situation. Hockey players wave their fists fairly. It’s funny that the best sniper of the Kings, Jeff Carter, fights no worse than a real tough guy. It’s a game and you can do whatever you want! Hmm… but you still can’t run away from reality — the virtual Carter crawls back to the bench pretty rumpled, with bruises on his face, it’s not his job…

When you try to attack the goalkeeper, the fight does not come out — the opponent’s player immediately drives up, stands up for the goalkeeper, and you have to fight with him, and then sit on the penalty box. By the way, a team-on-team arrangement will not work, there is no such option. This is hockey, after all, not fights without rules. nine0003

And that’s why the main thing here is throws and skating. True Performance Skating is a technology that adds a realistic skating physics model and over a thousand new moves. The second generation of True Performance Skating features improved acceleration dynamics, fast starts, quick turns and realistic side slip, which significantly increases the sensitivity and accuracy of control of hockey players. Read more about the new simulator here.

To fully appreciate the game, you need to wait for its release. The simulator will be released for the current generation consoles Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. In Russia, NHL 14 will go on sale on September 13th. nine0003

Russian fans of the game are probably interested in who will eventually be on the cover of the game, because Columbus goalkeeper Sergey Bobrovsky, who received the Vezina Trophy award for the best NHL goalkeeper this year, may appear on it. Bobrovsky reached the voting final along with New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur.
