Final Fantasy 16: Everything we know so far

Final Fantasy 16 is only half a year away—for PlayStation 5 owners. Sadly, over here on PC, we’re in for a longer wait before we get to slam Eikons together in the latest mainline Final Fantasy’s megabeast battles.

This is the first wholly new mainline Final Fantasy sequel since Final Fantasy 15 and, in true series form, it appears to star brand new characters in a whole new world. And by all appearances, its going to play like something between FFVII Remake and a Kaiju battle film.

Here’s everything we know, and have speculated, about Final Fantasy 16.

Final Fantasy 16 release date

When is the Final Fantasy 16 release date? Is a PC release confirmed?

Final Fantasy 16 will release for PlayStation 5 on June 22, 2023. A limited-time PS5 exclusive, the latest FF16 trailers tell us that it’s a six-month exclusivity window, with fine print reading «not available on other platforms until December 31, 2023. «

We can hope the PC version will release on December 31, 2023 as soon as PS5 exclusivity expires, but it’s probably safe to wait for a separate confirmation. After all, Final Fantasy 15’s PC port took two years to launch.

Final Fantasy 16 Trailers

Here’s Final Fantasy 16’s latest «Revenge» trailer

Fresh from The Game Awards 2022 is our latest look at FF16. Warning to Chocobo lovers: it kicks off with an immediate and unceremonious bird-horse killing. A tragedy in any context.

From there, it’s a montage of fast-paced combat, featuring lots of air juggling and mid-fight magic casting. We get some more glimpses of Kaiju-scale Eikon combat, though it’s still not clear how much realtime gameplay is involved there and how much is just scripted sequences. Finally, we get a PS5 release date, and a confirmation of the following six-month waiting period for a PC release.

What other Final Fantasy 16 trailers are there?

Our first look from the Final Fantasy 16 announcement trailer focuses on the broad tones and themes of the game’s medieval Europe-ish setting, which are definitely trending darker than any modern game in the series. The 2022 Sony State of Play trailer intersperses flashy combat footage with nuggets of high fantasy political drama. The October 2022 «Ambition» trailer provides an overview of the setting’s history, in a dying world where regions have been drained completely of magic.

Final Fantasy 16 Gameplay

Final Fantasy 16 is another action-forward take on combat

If you’ve played FF15, or part one of the FF7 remake, you won’t be surprised to see that Final Fantasy 16’s combat appears to be action-heavy. The combat system reminiscent of Kingdom Hearts combines party synergy and abilities with stylish real-time action.

Final Fantasy 16’s party members will be AI-driven

Final Fantasy is known for its party systems with deep synergies, but released combat footage mostly focuses on Clive, the player character, in flashy combat against monsters. Producer Yoshida confirmed that players will be bringing party members along for battles, but they’ll be mostly AI-controlled so we can focus on controlling Clive’s actions.

Based on gameplay footage, the Eikons will be an important factor in combat—not just to harness their magic against the player character’s run-of-the-mill enemies, but apparently in giant monster combat with other Eikons, too. Trailer gameplay shows the massive incarnations of traditional Final Fantasy summons slugging each other directly, with the Eikons taking damage to their own health bars.

Final Fantasy 16 won’t be open world

According to producer Naoki Yoshida, Final Fantasy 16 won’t be an open world game. Instead, with independent playable areas, the dev teams hopes to achieve what feels like a «truly ‘global’ scale» by creating a variety of environments that feel distant and distinct from each other.

Chocobos? Check.

Thank goodness. Driving the car in FF15 was fun and all, but nothing could compare to mounting a chocobo and taking on the wilds with your buds.

Final Fantasy 16 Story & Characters

Final Fantasy 16’s story will involve a fight against the Blight

New information on FF16’s website helps to provide some context to all those proper nouns from the reveal trailer.

The world of Valisthea has giant glittering mountains called Mothercrystals, Square Enix say. «For generations, people have flocked to these beacons to take advantage of their blessing, using the aether to conjure magicks that let them live lives of comfort and plenty. Great powers have grown up around each Mothercrystal, and an uneasy peace has long reigned between them. Yet now the peace falters as the spread of the Blight threatens to destroy their dominions.»

Then there are Eikons and Dominants—the former are the most powerful creatures in the world and the latter are the human vessels able to call upon their power. Depending on the nation they’re from, Dominants might be revered as royalty for their power or controlled because of it.

Meet some of Final Fantasy 16’s characters

Clive Rosfield
Anything can be a fantasy protagonist name if you want it to be. Player character Clive is the oldest son of the Archduke of Rosaria and was expected to be the new Dominant who would inherit the power of Phoenix. Instead, his younger brother becomes the Dominant and Clive gets the consolation prize of being named the First Shield of Rosaria. As the shield, he can wield a small part of Phoenix’s flame and is in charge of protecting his brother. «Clive’s promising career is to end in tragedy at the hands of a mysterious dark Eikon, Ifrit, setting him on a dangerous road to revenge,» Square Enix say.

Joshua Rosfield
Joshua is the second son of the Archduke of Rosaria and Clive’s younger sibling. He’s the sweet and soft younger boy archetype—a noble kid who treats everyone beneath his social standing with respect. He looks up to his elder brother too, of course. «Joshua often laments that it was he, the frail and bookish younger son, who was granted command of the firebird’s flames, and not his stronger, braver brother,» say Square Enix.

Jill Warrick
Jill was born in the northern territories and was made a ward in Rosaria at a young age to secure peace between the two nations. She’s been raised alongside the Rosfield boys, so it seems she’s like a sister to them. «Ever kind, gracious, and unassuming, Jill has become a trusted confidant to the brothers,» Square Enix say.

Other Final Fantasy 16 info

Yoshida and Takai are working on FF16

FF16 has some hype-worthy names involved, including Final Fantasy 14 producer Naoki Yoshida and director Hiroshi Takai. After Yoshida’s Creative Business Unit III studio famously turned around FF14, making it the huge success it is today, it’ll be interesting to see how the pair tackle a traditional Final Fantasy presumably detached from multiplayer.

Additionally, Square Enix recently hired Ryota Suzuki as a «battle director» and he is rumored to be working on FF16 . Suzuki was designer of Devil May Cry 5 and Dragon’s Dogma, which is a solid pedigree.

Final Fantasy 16 prioritized English voice recording

In July 2021, producer Yoshida said that English voice acting had already begun ahead of Japanese.

«We’ve been prioritising English voice recording. And we’re specifically doing it in British English. We’re using facial capture, so later on, we won’t have to adjust by hand each of the faces doing cutscenes. «And it’s full capture, as in, the motion capture actors are also doing the voice acting simultaneously,» Yoshida said. «The Japanese dubbing will start soon.»

FF16’s confusing exclusivity

Remember how I said FF16 was announced for PC in the reveal trailer and then somewhat unannounced by Square Enix? We can’t know for sure what’s causing the confusing messaging, but games industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls claims that it all has to do with a timed exclusivity deal with Sony.

According to Harding-Rolls, FF16 will be exclusive to the PS5 for its first six months. That would be the earliest time that the game can come to PC. As for other consoles, he says Sony has that exclusivity locked down for a full year. If this is true, it’s not an usual arrangement. Games supported in part by first party publishers often have timed exclusivity, though barring FF16 from PC as well does go a bit farther than most.

As for why Square Enix is trying to put the cat back in the bag about FF16 on PC? It’s possible that Sony wasn’t psyched about it. As a showcase during its big PS5 games event, Sony likely wanted viewers to feel like the PS5 was the only way to play FF16 (which it will be, just not forever, perhaps).

There is no official confirmation of FF XVI coming to PC, however the structure of the deal and the mention in the Sony PS5 showcase does suggest this is the case. When this arrives after the 6 months contractual period is up is obviously down to SE. /2September 17, 2020

Everything We Know So Far About the Game

Final Fantasy 16 is the next upcoming title from Square Enix in the massively popular RPG series and we have everything you need to know about its release.

FF16 is the sixteenth game in the mainline series, expected to be released exclusively for PS5 and is being produced by Naoki Yoshida and directed by Hiroshi Takai.

The game will be set in the fictional land of Valisthea, a continent with six factions that are on the verge of conflict due to a spreading malady called the Blight.

Here is everything you need to know about Final Fantasy 16:

Latest News

UPDATE 5th May 2022: Yoshida revealed in a UNIQLO magazine that the game is near the end of it’s development!

VGC translated the interview, with the producer saying: “Development of the latest title, Final Fantasy XVI, is in its final stages.

“Final Fantasy XVI aims to integrate the story and the gaming experience into a single player game. Unlike online, which portrays multiple players simultaneously, Final Fantasy XVI focuses on the individual.

“This makes the story more immersive. It’s a very dense story.

“As an adult, I learnt about society and said to myself ‘reality is not as easy as a video game’. I hope that those who once left Final Fantasy will remember how exciting their passion for video games was back then.”

UPDATE 2nd April 2022: Still nothing new from Square Enix regarding the game as of writing, but we’re hoping for something before the end of 2022!

UPDATE 9th March 2022: Fans are hoping for an announcement during State of Play!

UPDATE 18th January 2022: Square Enix released an article on their website with the games that players can expect to see released in 2022, and unfortunately Final Fantasy 16 is not one of them.

Life Is Strange Remastered Collection, Babylon’s Fall, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin and Forspoken are among the games that are slated to be released this year.

UPDATE 11th January 2022: Producer Naoki Yoshida recently gave an update on the game’s development:

“When last we spoke, I promised I would have more information on Final Fantasy 16 sometime later in 2021. However, I regret to inform you that I will be unable to keep that promise as complications stemming from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic have delayed the game’s development by almost a half year.”

“That said, we have spent much of 2021 addressing this issue, and hope to see its impact to a minimum by the new year, allowing us to better focus on the tasks at hand: increasing graphic resource quality, refining combat mechanics, fleshing out individual battles, putting the finishing touches on cutscenes, and conducting overall graphical optimisation. Our primary goal now is to be as hands-on with the game as possible in order to see it fully polished.”

UPDATE 14th December 2021: Although nothing has been said yet, we’re hoping that the year-end Japanese developer’s interviews with Famitsu and Dengeki will reveal more!

UPDATE 16th November 2021: Reportedly the game is ‘near to completion’ although there is still not a definitive date of release for the next iteration of the massively popular series.

Yoshida recently confirmed that he is working on Final Fantasy 16 with the ‘utmost care,’ with some fans concerned that his ongoing work with MMO Final Fantasy 14 is drawing away from the new title.

In an interview with Famitsu, Yoshida stated: “I sometimes see on social media comments like ‘Yoshida is working on Final Fantasy 16, so he’s too busy and is hands-off with Final Fantasy 14.

“This is absolutely not true. I am desperately working on it, so I hope you’ll stick with me from here on out.”

Release Date

According to Kotaku, the game is set to release in summer of 2023.

Trailer

The initial trailer for the game was originally released back in September 2020, showing cinematic elements as well as some early gameplay that seems to indicate that the game will be taking on a style similar to Final Fantasy 15, Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Kingdom Hearts.

Gameplay

There has not been a lot of actual gameplay footage released thus far aside from the aforementioned trailer.

The game will be set in a medieval-style world, which harkens back to the classic sprite games of Final Fantasy and will most likely include the classic use of magic, items and levelling up but with a modern twist to movement and actual fights.

Which consoles will Final Fantasy 16 be released on?

As of writing, Final Fantasy 16 is set to be a Playstation 5 exclusive title.

Characters

Square Enix has confirmed the following Characters on the official Final Fantasy 16 website:

Clive Rosfield

“The firstborn son of the Archduke of Rosaria. Though all expected him to inherit the Phoenix’s flames and awaken as its Dominant, destiny instead chose his younger brother Joshua to bear this burden.

“In search of a role of his own, Clive dedicated himself to mastering the blade. His practice pays off when, at just fifteen years of age, he wins the ducal tournament and is dubbed the First Shield of Rosaria—tasked to guard the Phoenix and blessed with the ability to wield a part of his fire.

“Alas, Clive’s promising career is to end in tragedy at the hands of a mysterious dark Eikon, Ifrit, setting him on a dangerous road to revenge.”

Joshua Rosfield

“The second son of the Archduke of Rosaria and Clive’s younger brother by five years. Joshua awoke as the Dominant of the Phoenix soon after his birth. Despite his noble upbringing, Joshua treats all his father’s subjects with warmth and affection—none more so than Clive, whom he deeply admires.

“Joshua often laments that it was he, the frail and bookish younger son, who was granted command of the firebird’s flames, and not his stronger, braver brother.

“While Clive will gladly throw himself into any danger, Joshua quails at the sight of a carrot on his dinner plate. But carrots become the least of his concern when he, too, is swept up into the tragic events that change Clive’s life forever.”

Jill Warrick

“Born in the fallen Northern Territories, Jill was taken from her homeland at a tender age to become a ward of Rosaria, securing peace between the two warring nations.

The Archduke insisted that she be raised alongside his sons, and now, at twelve years of age, she is as much a part of the Rossfield household as Clive and Joshua.

“Ever kind, gracious, and unassuming, Jill has become a trusted confidant to the brothers.”

We will keep you updated as and when more information is released on Final Fantasy 16!

Japanese studio Mistwalker , led by the creator of the series Final Fantasy Hironobu Sakaguchi , has presented the first videos and screenshots of a new game called Fantasian , created for the Apple Arcade service. nine0003

Gameplay novelty is a classic turn-based role-playing game, one of the main differences of which from other representatives of the genre is a unique environment — three-dimensional characters move against the backdrop of hand-created miniature dioramas, of which there will be more than 150 types in the game.

In Fantasian, the player takes on the role of a guy named Leo, awakened by a powerful explosion with only one memory in his head. The hero has to go on a journey around the world, where humanity is slowly covered by a strange mechanical infection. The plot of the game was written by Hironobu Sakaguchi himself, and the composer was no less legendary Nobuo Uematsu , known from the Final Fantasy soundtrack, as well as Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon .

Fantasian is scheduled to release in 2021 on Apple Arcade.

A New Empire is free for iOS and Android, but causes a lot of controversy

La Final Fantasy saga is probably the most emblematic of RPG so it’s no surprise that its new mobile game, Final Fantasy XV: The New Empire, premiered , this would have raised a lot of expectations. Unfortunately for the creators, reception has not been as good as expected, and downloads are growing at almost the same rate as critics. nine0003

  • 1 Final Fantasy XV: A New Empire is not the MMORPG that many expected
  • 2 Successful download, but not critical
  • 3 You can try it for free and decide for yourself

Final Fantasy XV: A New Empire is not the MMORPG that many expected

We already have a lot of games in the saga Final Fantasy en Google games and App Store most of them are ports of the originals at a very high price, but there are others free, designed specifically for mobile devices. What we’ve never seen before was MMORPG takes place in his universe, so it’s understandable that fans were excited about the idea.

However, in reality, although this Final Fantasy XV: New Empire will be advertised as MMORPG , it is actually quite a lot. Yes, it is multiplayer online , but Google Play’s own classification already warns us that it is a game estrategia , very similar, in fact, to other research games responsible for its development that were not Square Enyx (Game of War, Mobile Strike). nine0003

Successful download, but not critical

And here we are in one of those cases where, as soon as the game hits the app stores, the download immediately becomes successful, even if the ratings are not at all consistent. It’s not a disaster the size of Super Mario Run’s debut, but it promises a lot.

It’s true that there’s nothing wrong with the show going a little outside of its usual genre to explore new formulas, but it seems like it’s gone too far for many fans in this case. You have to admit them at least in that at the moment it’s really hard to imagine playing Final Fantasy which lacks a few elements RPG at least since that’s your main differentiator.
