Survive by any means — that’s the goal of DayZ. The game was originally a mod for ArmA II.
Description
DayZ, also sometimes DayZ Standalone, is an open-world multiplayer horror game from the Czech company Bohemia Interactive. The game grew out of a multi-award-winning mod of the same name. The action takes place in the fictional Soviet republic of Chernarus. An unknown virus has turned most of the population into aggressive zombies. In the world, the player must mine limited supplies of food, water, weapons, and medical supplies. At the same time, you have to hide from zombies or engage in battle with them.
Also, there is a choice: to cooperate with other players or not.
Gameplay
The area of the map is 225 square kilometers. The goal of the game is to survive a catastrophic zombie epidemic. In houses, sheds, abandoned cars and other places you can find food, water, medicines, clothes and other resources. You can defend yourself with a variety of weapons. The character must take care of his health: for example, eat enough healthy food. It is threatened by a range of diseases, including cholera, dysentery and hepatitis. You can become infected, for example, by drinking dirty water.
Contacts with other players are important for research. Introduced text and voice chat from the original mod. The new «whisper channel» allows you to communicate with a player who is very close, in such a way that others do not hear anything. Remote communication is possible with a radio based on the ACRE mod for Arma 2 . You can control your radio station.
Players can build bases to store items. Also, there are hundreds of famous books in the game world. For example, inside DayZ, the player can read «War of the Worlds».
Development of
Following the huge success of the DayZ mod, in August 2012 Dean Hall announced a standalone game based on this mod, which he would develop as project leader in collaboration with Bohemia Interactive. Then Hall promised a release by the end of the year, around November. Take On Helicopters, a component of the Real Virtuality engine, was chosen as the engine.
One of the main goals of the developers was to create a realistic world by increasing the number of buildings that the player can enter. Dean Hall noted that the game would include «numerous bad ideas» that would tell what players like and what they don’t. Hall decided that this approach was better than a complete rejection of risky ideas. The game was based on a client-server architecture similar to that used in many MMO games.
In particular, item and NPC spawns are calculated on the server, not on the player’s machine. AT Arma 2 many of these tasks were performed by the player’s computer. The point of moving operations to the server is to reduce the number of hacks and remove unnecessary features (for example, flanking artificial intelligence). In November 2012, it was reported that the game would be released on Steam, allowing the use of the Steam Server Browser and patches.
After the troubled release of a similar game, War Z , Dean Hall stated in an interview that the «whole saga» of development seriously challenged him: does he want to stay in the industry? Hall considered leaving the DayZ Standalone project. The game did not release as scheduled (2012) due to the complexity of mod changes. Instead of a slight improvement in the mod, the developers actually remade the engine.
In March 2013, Dean Hall announced that the public alpha version would be released no earlier than June.
He also noted that the cars will not be included in the release version, they will be introduced in the patch. In April 2013, Hall stated that a console release was almost a done deal. In June, he was in talks with Sony and Microsoft for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions. However, Hall noted that the development team would not consider a console version until the game was released on PC.
During development, Hall maintained development blogs, attended game events, uploaded gameplay videos online, and kept the public informed of development progress. For example, the second DayZ video shows the animation team at work and some interviews with the developers. Hall’s third video is a gameplay video showing a new area of the map and new types of clothing (including motorcycle helmets).
At PAX East 2013, the game received the «Best Hybrid MMO» award from MMORPG.com. The authors of the award said that DayZ could be the perfect survival horror. In August 2013, at Gamescom 2013, the game won the «IGN People’s Choice Award», beating 49 games by 15% in the vote.
