10 tips for driving a car with a manual transmission

Manual transmission and its advantages

In recent years, the demand for cars with manual transmission has become somewhat lower. Drivers increasingly prefer automatic cars, citing the fact that they are much easier to drive.

However, no one is going to abandon the classic mechanics yet, as it still surpasses automatic transmissions in several ways at once. Firstly, the mechanics are much more reliable and durable, and in the event of a breakdown, its repair will cost less than the repair of an automatic transmission. nine0005

Secondly, driving a manual car in winter is much safer than driving an automatic car. Thirdly, cars with manual transmission are somewhat cheaper than analogues with automatic transmission, and during operation they are more economical in terms of fuel consumption.

So you’ve decided to buy a car with a manual transmission, but you have no idea how to drive a manual transmission. In this article, we will gradually tell you about the main nuances of driving a machine with mechanics. nine0005

Step one: manual transmission gears

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvg6FLlGY7E

When driving a car with a manual transmission, the driver is required to independently change gears at the most appropriate moment for this. Most manual transmissions have 4 or 5 speeds (rarely 6 or even 7) and one reverse gear. For correct switching between them, the driver needs to know the following:

  • Clutch pedal. Having squeezed this pedal to failure, a special mechanism is activated in the gearbox, after which the driver can safely switch from one speed to another using the gearshift knob. If you press the clutch pedal somehow, then the speeds will switch with a characteristic rattle and crunch, which can later lead to a breakdown of the manual transmission. nine0020
  • Neutral gear. If you turn on the neutral gear while the engine is running, then the torque from the latter will not be transmitted to the wheels, which means the car will not budge. After moving the lever to the neutral position, you can safely switch to any gear.
  • Second gear. In most cases, the first gear is used exclusively for starting off, but the second is a kind of «workhorse». By activating it, you can easily move down a steep slope or maneuver confidently in a dense stream of urban transport. nine0020
  • Reverse gear. This gear is different from other speeds in a manual transmission. It has the largest range of work. By selecting it, you can accelerate faster than in first gear. However, driving on the back for a long time is not recommended, as this can lead to damage to the manual transmission.

Note that each speed has its own maximum torque, which can be achieved using the gas pedal. When driving a car with a manual transmission, you will feel every speed, which not only adds drive, but also contributes to better control over the car. nine0005

Step Two: Gear Locations

Since it is necessary to be completely focused on the road while driving, when changing to the mechanics, the driver must remember the location of all the gears indicated on the shift knob.

For beginners, it is recommended to turn to experienced drivers and, sitting in the front passenger seat, observe from the side how to simultaneously press the clutch pedal and shift gears. It is also worth paying attention to at what speeds the driver switches from one gear to another. nine0005

It is likely that the first days of driving a car on the mechanics, you will still look with your eyes for the gear lever and remember what position it corresponds to a particular speed. Over time, this will pass, and you will learn to shift gears automatically.

It is also common for beginners to make mistakes when choosing the optimal speed for shifting from one gear to another. It is important here not to fuss, trying to focus on the sound of the motor. So, when you turn on a gear that is too high, the engine speed will be low, and the car will not want to pick up speed. nine0005

In this case, it is necessary to shift to a lower gear. If the engine speed is very high, then you are driving in a low gear, and to unload the transmission, it is worth switching to a higher one.

If the car has a tachometer (indicates the number of engine revolutions), the driver can switch gears based on his performance. Of course, each model is individual in its own way and requires a special gear shifting order, but in most cases you can switch from one speed to another when you reach the mark of 3,000 rpm. nine0005

You can also switch from one speed to another using the speedometer. So, the first gear is suitable for driving at a speed of 1 to 25 km / h, the second — from 25 to 50 km / h, the third — from 50 to 70 km / h, etc. However, these are far from exact values, and the more powerful your car is, the more these ranges will differ upwards.

Step Three: Starting the Engine

Before starting a manual transmission vehicle, you must first depress the clutch pedal and move the gear lever to neutral. It is strictly forbidden to start the engine of the machine with the gear engaged, as this will lead to uncontrolled movement of the vehicle, which will create a potentially dangerous situation. nine0005

After starting the engine, let it warm up. Note that in the cold season, in order to warm up the oil frozen in the transmission, it is recommended to hold the clutch pedal for several minutes after switching on the neutral gear.

Step Four: Using the Clutch Pedal Correctly

https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=rAkN_mUw42g

The clutch is the most important mechanism for smoothly shifting from one gear to another. As noted above, in order to prevent damage to the manual transmission, the clutch pedal must always be fully depressed. It is worth pressing the pedal exclusively with the left foot, and use the right foot to press the gas and brake pedals. nine0005

At first, it is difficult for novice drivers to release the clutch perfectly after changing gears, but over time you will gain the necessary experience. Well, at first, beginners are advised to smoothly release the clutch. This will allow you to feel when the torque begins to be transferred from the engine to the wheels.

If the clutch pedal is not fully depressed, it is recommended to avoid unnecessary acceleration. Also, do not leave the clutch pedal depressed for more than two seconds, so even at traffic lights, use neutral gear. nine0005

Step Five: Good Coordination

Learning to ride a mechanic requires well-coordinated actions. For example, let’s analyze the switching process for 1st and 2nd gears. To begin with, you must depress the clutch pedal all the way, and then switch the gear knob to first gear.

Then gently release the clutch pedal while slowly depressing the accelerator pedal. When the clutch pedal is somewhere in the middle of its travel, you will feel how the torque begins to be transferred from the engine to the wheels. nine0005

By completely releasing the clutch pedal, you can accelerate to somewhere up to 25 km / h, after which you need to switch to second gear. To do this, you will need to depress the clutch pedal to the end again, shift the speed knob to second gear and smoothly, without releasing the clutch pedal, add gas.

Step Six: Downshifting

Downshifting is downshifting. With it, you can not only slow down the car, but also choose the most suitable speed for driving. nine0005

Downshifting can be used in cases where it is necessary to reduce speed without using the brake pedal (for example, on wet or icy road surfaces). In this regard, a manual transmission is much safer than an automatic transmission, as it gives the driver complete control over the vehicle.

For example, let’s take a look at a situation where, with the help of downshifting, you can stop a car moving at a speed of 70 km/h:

  1. It is necessary to press the clutch pedal and switch the gearbox to 3rd gear, while moving the right foot from the gas pedal to the brake pedal.
  2. To avoid running the engine at high speeds, gently release the clutch pedal.
  3. Depress the clutch again before stopping the vehicle.
  4. Do not use first gear as a low gear.

Using this method, you can stop the car much faster and safer than using the brake pedal. nine0005

Step Seven: Reverse Gear

Be especially careful when engaging reverse gear. In the event of improper engagement, the gear lever may jump out, therefore it is strictly forbidden to engage in reverse gear until the vehicle has come to a complete stop.

Note that some cars with manual transmission require you to first press a special button on the gear lever to engage reverse gear. It is also worth remembering that the reverse gear is designed for a fairly high range of operation, which means that in order to avoid a sharp increase in speed, the gas pedal must be pressed smoothly, without any extra effort. nine0005

Step Eight: Starting up the hill with the mechanics

Because of the terrain, there are practically no perfectly flat roads in the world, so the motorist has to repeatedly drive up the slopes and then go down them. If you do not use the brakes, then when you stop in such places, the car will simply roll down the hill or down the hill. Starting on sloping roads is also noticeably more difficult, so it’s best to practice in advance in familiar terrain.

After stopping while climbing a slope and applying the handbrake, shift into neutral. Next, you need to depress the clutch pedal and engage first gear. nine0005

Slowly releasing the clutch and pressing the gas pedal, at some point you will feel that the car is trying to start. At this point, you need to remove the handbrake and add a little more gas to start a confident movement uphill.

In the future, it will be necessary to abandon the use of the handbrake, moving uphill by quickly moving your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator.

Step Nine: Parking

After parking and shutting off the car engine, depress the clutch pedal and engage first gear. This will protect your car from rolling. As an additional insurance, you can also raise the parking brake lever (if the handbrake is electronic, then you must press the button). nine0005

Remember that when you return to the car, you must first shift into neutral and only then start the engine.

Step Ten: Practice

Many newbies who just got their licenses are afraid to drive a manual car, finding it difficult and confusing to drive. To overcome this fear, it is recommended to practice on special sites. The absence of other cars will allow you to slowly deal with the nuances of driving a car with a manual transmission. nine0005

After a couple of these sessions, you will feel confident, after which you can try to practice on public roads. It is recommended to do this in the early morning or late evening, when the traffic on the roads is not so intense.

Conclusion

At the moment, there is an opinion among the younger generation of motorists that a mechanical transmission is obsolete and not as comfortable as compared to an automatic transmission. This is not entirely true.

The manual is still one of the most reliable transmissions, and despite some reduction in driving comfort, in return it provides complete control of the car. That is why many sports models are still equipped exclusively with manual transmission. nine0005

Driving technique

Cars with automatic transmission require a special approach. Understanding the intricacies of its operation helps technical expert Oleg Osipov.

Accustomed to driving with manual transmissions, drivers who first switched to cars with automatic transmissions often try to exploit their four-wheeled friends, as before — and make a number of fatal mistakes for technology. In an attempt to save fuel on long straights, they switch to neutral and coast at high speed. Or while parking at a traffic light, the selector is switched from D to N mode in the hope of protecting yourself from wear. However, these actions, very useful for manual transmissions, are incredibly harmful for automatic transmissions and significantly reduce their resource. nine0005

The fact is that the N mode in the machine is intended only for transporting the car in tow. The oil pump switches to a gentle mode of operation, which reduces the lubrication pressure. This is good for emergency evacuation over short distances.

If the car is moving at breakneck speed and the transmission is set to N, a different kind of process occurs. With a lack of lubrication, additional loads are placed on the mechanisms, which lead to increased wear of parts. Therefore, it is contraindicated to quickly roll to «neutral» with a machine gun. To save fuel in D mode, just take your foot off the gas pedal. The motor stabilizes the rotation of the shaft at idle speed, which differs in consumption of 0.8 liters per hour. And the transmission in D mode will be well lubricated with oil. nine0005

When stopping at traffic lights, the frequent transfer of the selector from D to N and vice versa entails increased work of the friction clutches involving the planetary gear sets. The box is designed for such a transfer about a dozen times a day. And pulling the handle at each stop increases the number of operations to several dozen. As a result, the resource of clutches and valves is reduced by 2-3 times.

In general, an automatic transmission does not require any additional action on the part of the driver while driving.

Towing a car with a machine gun is possible only in the neutral mode of the box, and even then only at a distance of no more than 50 kilometers and at a speed of no more than 40 km / h. If you exceed the speed, then increased wear of parts will begin again.

However, there are other types of transmissions besides the hydromechanical automatic transmission.
