Event Hotel Information
Please be mindful of our COVID-19 Policy! We will be strictly enforcing our policy for the safety of all attendees, so please review it before you arrive!
This event will be taking place at the DoubleTree Hilton Bloomington-Minneapolis Hotel, located in Bloomington, MN. You can book using our group rate via the button in the sidebar!
Do not attempt to book by any other method unless
instructed by GDQ staff. In order to ensure a fair and and impartial booking process, attempts to book by means other than described in our guide may result in cancellations, especially if attempting to book rooms prior to block opening.
The event starts at 12PM local time on January 8, and ends early
morning January 15 (typically 12AM-3AM). There is a setup/unpack day prior and
teardown/packing on the last day. However, various event services, restaurant deals, and materials may not be available
outside the main event.
Parking
There is an on-site uncovered parking lot, free for all guests.
Amenities
The hotel has free wifi provided for our guest rooms. However, we ask that you please refrain from using the wifi for
watching the event stream. The hotel will be broadcasting our stream in high quality on all guest room televisions.
All guest rooms have a minifridge. Note that there will not be a hospitality (cafeteria) area at this hotel. Outside food must be consumed inside your hotel room.
Safety and Security
In addition to GDQ’s own safety staff and volunteers, there will also be a dedicated cleaning crew responsible for cleaning high contact areas. We ask that you
help us keep the event clean and safe by making use of our freely available cleaning supplies for your equipment. Any bags left unattended may be removed by security, so do not leave your bags in any event space.
Transportation
This hotel has a free shuttle service. The hotel will be running shuttles to and from the airport the whole week, but note that
shuttles do not run overnight.
Exact shuttle schedules will be provided in our attendee email, sent a couple weeks prior to
the event.
Food
The hotel has a number of food options in walking distance, in addition to the Mall of America and downtown options available for take-out via public transit, or delivery.
Event Info
Age Restrictions
Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a registered parent or guardian at all times. Parents/Guardians will need to fill out and
pay for registration
as instructed below. During the process of filling out your user profile, you will see an option labeled «I’m Bringing Children». Select
that, and fill
out the names of the children you will be bringing, up to a maximum of four per parent/guardian. Children are free under their
parent/guardian’s registration. Children
must wear their child badge (provided during the parent/guardian’s check-in at the event) at all times.
Anyone 18 or older must have their own paid registration. They may not be listed as a child under a parent/guardian and any such
registration may be
rendered invalid.
Children under the age of 12 are not permitted at the event. Children are subject to the same COVID-19
Policy as the parents, including vaccination
and masking requirements. Parents are responsible for ensuring their children follow the policy, and will need to provide vaccination proof for their
children (provided at the same time as your own).
So how do I sign up?
- Sign up for a Games Done Quick Account (if you haven’t already).
- Provide your birthdate when prompted.
- Head on over to your profile, and create your user profile.
- Return to your your profile, and complete the event registration form.
- Head back to your profile once more, and submit your payment for registration to the
event. - Starting April 25th, you will need to return to your profile to complete the COVID-19 vaccination proof form. Complete it before May 23rd, or your
registration may be cancelled, and you won’t be able to attend!
Due to high traffic, you may be added to a queue when proceeding to the payment step.
Do NOT refresh the page or close the tab while in the queue.
The system will process everyone in the order they joined the queue. Once you are through the queue, you will have 5 minutes to complete your payment, if there are any remaining spots open. You will
be returned to your profile with confirmation of your payment when completed.
Keep in mind: you can only register to attend for yourself. No one else may register for you. If you attempt to give away, trade, or sell a registration, it may be cancelled without refund. If someone has tried to give you or sell you a registration, please inform Games Done Quick management.
There is a cap of 1500 for this event. We will start at 1350 to accommodate runners and volunteers, and once we have added them to the system, we
may open any remaining spots. There will not be a waiting list.
Remember: you have not reserved
a spot at the event until you complete payment. You will know you’re good to go when you see the in your profile!
What you get for registering
When you check-in with the
check-in desk at the event, you will receive a badge.
In order to pick up a badge, you must have a
valid government issued photo ID (passport, drivers license, state ID, etc). If you do not have one, make sure to get one
immediately, as IDs can take weeks or more to obtain. The badge is valid for the entire event, including setup days. The schedule for check-in will be in our attendee guide, emailed a couple weeks prior to the event.
Please bring your COVID-19 vaccination documentation with you to the event, in case it is needed.
Event Airport Transportation Guide
There is only one nearby airport (MSP), and the hotel provides free shuttle service to and from the airport. The shuttle does not run past midnight. Contact the hotel if you have questions about shuttle times and availability. Make sure to wait at the hotel pickup line at the airport, not the taxi or other shuttle lines.

Every year, as you can easily see, the games are getting bigger and more beautiful, which, however, results in the time that must be spent on passing. Take any of the recent hits, from Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla to Cyberpunk 2077 — you’ll need at least two and a half dozen hours (and often much more) to complete the story campaign alone! What can we say about the complete passage of the game, with all the side quests and activities? nine0003
If you’re looking for an alternative to long games, you’ll love our selection, which includes only great short games.
Most of them are completed in less than four hours, but they give no less impressions than huge AAA projects. This list was multi-platform in mind, and many of the games on this list are available not only on PC, but also on consoles.
What Remains of Edith Finch

Surely you know that one short quatrain is often stronger than a long poem. What Remains of Edith Finch is the game’s equivalent of a quatrain where three hours of simple gameplay packs as much emotion and depth as dozens of other, much longer games released in 2017 don’t.
The developer Giant Sparrow managed to create a series of small sketches, combined into an anthology. The time you spend on The Stanley Parable depends entirely on how long you’re willing to put up with her narrator’s idiosyncratic meta-comments.

Released in 2013, Gone Home set the standard for today’s walking sims with a short but gripping and deeply personal story that effortlessly captures the player’s attention for the full two hours. The story is told from the point of view of a girl in her twenties who returned home after a long trip abroad. To the surprise of the heroine, much has changed since the last time she set foot on the threshold of the family nest. nine0003
You won’t meet a single character for the whole time, but thanks to the believable dialogues of Gone Home, one gets the impression that you have known all the members of the Greenbriar family for more than one year, which is especially surprising given the short duration of the game.

Grow Up
- Average Completion Time: 4 hours
Publisher Ubisoft, widely known for its open worlds with towers, managed to surprise everyone by releasing in 2015 a small platform game Grow Home, developed by Reflections studio. The main character in it was a funny and clumsy robot named BUD, whose task was to get to his starship with the help of growing plants. And it was a great game. nine0003
Its sequel, Grow Up, is essentially an improved and longer version of the original. Using the robot’s abilities wisely, you can get to the spaceship in just four hours or so, but take your time — the game is so good that you will probably want to stretch the journey longer.

The Unfinished Swan
- Average travel time: 3 hours
Before Giant Sparrow wowed a bunch of people with What Remains of Edith Finch, the studio managed to wow a slightly smaller number of gamers with The Unfinished Swan, a project that tackles similar themes of loss and wonder but with a unique gameplay concept.
The player travels through the imaginary kingdom of the «Swan Sketch», bringing it to life with balls of ink and paint, making whimsical towers and houses gradually emerge from the snowy whiteness, which suits the local king quite well. nine0003
Giant Sparrow has managed to turn this clever trick into an amazing mechanic for a puzzle platformer, the visualization of which, coupled with the soundtrack, effortlessly immerses the player in a state of peace and relaxation. Like Edith Finch, The Unfinished Swan is worth every minute you spend on it.

- Average transit time: 3 hours
In relation to Abzû, one can often hear that «she’s like Journey, only under water.» And indeed, these two games have a lot in common: wordless interaction with the environment, compelling visuals, and a simple but interesting story. Both of them prefer to show rather than tell. They share a composer (Austin Wintory) and a creative director (Matt Nava).
But for all that, Giant Squid’s first game has plenty of personality. nine0003
Water levels are not popular in video games, but Abzû has managed to turn the sea into an underwater paradise both visually and gameplay-wise. The depths in it look inspiring and menacing at the same time, which perfectly reflects reality.

Firewatch
- Average travel time: 4 hours
In Firewatch, the developers at Campo Santo squeezed the events of several months into four hours of slightly interactive adventure game set in the Wyoming wilderness. The result is a great story from the lead author of Telltale’s The Walking Dead. The excellent work of the voice actors, Richard Sommer and Cissy Jones, combined with the stunning art of Ollie Moss, creates an impressive picture of wild America, serving as a backdrop for reflections on aging and regret. However, there are enough inspiring moments in the game. nine0003
The plot of Firewatch, unfortunately, was somewhat spoiled by the solution of the main mystery, but, nevertheless, you will be pleased with this long walk through the reserve in the company of Henry and Delilah.

Inside
- Average travel time: 2 hours
What is Inside really about? Industrialization? Immoral science? About the illusion of free choice in video games? You will think longer what she is than play into it, which in no way detracts from the merits of the developers from Playdead, who previously distinguished themselves with the wonderful Limbo.
Over the course of four hours, Inside jumps from one 2D platformer gameplay idea to another without sticking to any of them for very long. This is done for the sake of unpredictability, which plays into the hands of the paranoid atmosphere of Inside. The last twenty minutes of the game are almost a Lovecraftian plunge into sheer madness. And when you understand what’s really going on… and comes the realization of the fact that Inside is nothing but a small masterpiece. nine0003

Superhot is as hyper-stylized and super-addictive as The Matrix, only you can beat the game faster than you can even reach the end credits of the first movie in the trilogy.
And the gunplay here is so good that there is not a single reason to deny yourself the pleasure.
Superhot’s core gameplay is that time only moves with you. However, its main feature is not this mechanic at all, but the battles themselves, which are more like puzzles than banal fights and skirmishes. Surprisingly, at the same time, every skirmish in the game is still exciting and exciting blood. Superhot is a brutal two-hour ballet in which you can fully experience every poke and bullet, both given and received (yes, there is a VR version too!). nine0003

Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes

The strong (and at the same time, weak) side of MGS5:GZ is its extremely short duration. When it first came out, many gamers rightly resented Konami’s decision to charge $40 for what turned out to be just a (albeit great!) demo of the upcoming The Phantom Pain. Then the cost of the game changed to a more adequate one and any gamer got the opportunity to evaluate the concept of the famous Kojima.

Ground Zeroes is a great entry into the series, with typical mechanics and concepts, including terribly long cutscenes. Even now, this game remains a wonderful opportunity to enjoy Metal Gear without getting bogged down in one of the masterpiece (and far from short) parts of the franchise.

Completely wordless, symbolic and allusive, without a single hint of a user interface — that’s it, Journey. It takes only two hours, but the impressions that the game gives will remain with you until the end of your days. The plot at first seems like a muddy symbolism, attached, “to be”, but the further, the more the developer manages to charm the player with narrative, gameplay and rhythms that create an indescribable feeling in unity. nine0003
This is one of the very few multiplayer games in which interaction with other players happens so naturally that it seems incredible.
Regarding its plot, you can find dozens and hundreds of theories, analyzes and calculations on the Internet, but, in essence, Journey is what it is called. A journey from point A to point B, allowing each participant to understand something of their own.

Limbo
- Average travel time: 2 hours
The ancient Greeks believed that bad people were doomed to wander in the underworld for an eternity, but for you, the journey through the dark caves of Limbo will take less than three hours. However, do not expect an easy walk from her, this two-dimensional platformer is able to catch up with the horrors of silhouettes and sounds alone.
Limbo is a small masterpiece created by the Playdead studio, and you have probably heard the praises of this game thousands of times already. Of course, over the years, she has not lost an ounce of her dark charm. nine0003

Players take on the roles of Vincent and Leo, a pair of inmates whose jailbreak is made possible through a series of varied mini-games that require precise teamwork. A unique experience, superbly designed mechanics and a captivating story with twists. Before the game, make sure that your partner does not mind sitting at the monitor or TV for six hours in a row.

If the description of the game is not enough for you, then take a look at the time of its passage. You are waiting for two hours of animal antics, humor and the opportunity to throw the city into a growing huge hole. A lot for a hundred and twenty minutes, to be honest.
Donut County isn’t very complex or fast paced, but it’s a strange satisfaction to watch a hole devouring another character or object. And the so-called Internet humor of Ben Esposito, the creator of the game, pleasantly enlivens what is happening on the screen. Great game to unwind after a busy day. nine0003

A magical game about a girl who lost her voice. The Spaniards from Nomada Studio were able to perfectly convey the despair of the main character, as well as immerse gamers in a stunningly beautiful world and bewitch with a simple but addictive gameplay. If we had one attempt to show a person who is not familiar with games that they can be a real art, then we would choose GRIS.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
- Average completion time: 5 hours
One day, Ubisoft decided to play a trick on the players and release a parody shooter that makes fun of gaming clichés and mocks action movies of the 90s.
It turned out to be an unexpected hit — Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is seriously addictive, and each mission in the game one hundred percent conveys the atmosphere of cult works of cinema. The case when I would like more — but alas.

Narbacular Drop, a student-designed puzzle game, was noticed by Valve and turned into one of the world’s most famous games, Portal. The game is completed in three hours, but the impressions from it will remain with you for a long time.

Co-op puzzle game Biped sends you to Earth as funny little robots to fix the antennas of the beacon that helps the astronauts find their way home. Such a responsible mission cannot be failed, so try to make every effort to complete it. Rampage Knights

Rampage Knights is a hardcore 2D beat’em up with roguelike elements that takes you on a short adventure through a fantasy world. Small but intense, as you will have time to fight monsters and their bosses, play cards with Satan, spin the hellish wheel of fortune and fly on a pony or in a bucket like Baba Yaga in pursuit of the final villain.
The passage takes only an hour and a half at most, but you won’t get it right the first time, because Rampage Knights contains elements of a roguelike. This means that you have no control over the loot that drops from the enemies, and therefore the duration of the passage depends on the case. nine0003

Atmospheric co-op puzzle game We Were Here Too challenges two players to test their bond of friendship and mutual understanding. A merciless storm has led the heroes to an ancient castle, and in order to get out of it, they will have to communicate by radio and work together to solve tricky puzzles, being in different rooms.
We Were Here Too starts as fast as it ends — just a couple of hours separates you from freedom. However, the ending here is not a good one, unless you were super attentive with a friend. nine0003

To The Moon is an RPG Maker game (read our selection on the subject) and is developed by the independent studio Freebird.
She managed to recreate on computer screens a short, but touching and memorable story about a man whose cherished desire is to visit the moon and will be fulfilled by gamers, delving into his memories and changing them.
In terms of gameplay, this is an adventure walker with simple puzzles. The main emphasis is on the story — moreover, it is continued in the same short spin-off (A Bird Story) and sequel (Finding Paradise), which we also recommend playing.

Blair Witch is trying to unravel the mystery of the Blair Witch, the main character of the game Blair Witch — a former policeman with a difficult past. Going in search of a missing little boy, he falls into a trap of dark forces that distorts time and space. nine0003
