Times are good out there for MMO fans on consoles. There are tons of options in all genres and subgenres of MMO and MMO-adjacent games requiring little to no compromises.
With PlayStation 5 launching many of these games are going to be better than ever with improved load times and better performance — even if they don’t get official PS5 Or X|S versions — so it’s a great time to jump in.
For the sake of this list I’ve left off games like Minecraft, Conan Exiles, Ark, and Fallout 76 intentionally because, even though they’re essentially MMOs at this point, the survival genre has become more of its own thing as a whole. The majority of this list fits neatly into the MMORPG bucket without confusion.
Furthermore, I’ve left off games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Monster Hunter: World, and GTA Online since those are more like large online lobbies with separate modes and missions branching off — they lack the persistence and recurring online feel that the rest of this list has.
Naturally, the vast majority of games on this list are just PS4 or Xbox One games that you’d access via backwards compatibility digitally, but a few of them are confirmed to be getting actual PS5 or X|S releases at some point too.

10) Neverwinter

By virtue of being the tabletop game that helped usher in the popularity of the RPG in and of itself, it should come as no surprise to see a Dungeons & Dragons based MMO on this list. Neverwinter is starting to show its age visually, but it still plays great today and has tons of content. This game is less massive than some others, instead using lots of zones and instances for some types of content, but the gameplay is very action-focused and it features a sprawling fantasy world to explore with friends and strangers alike.

This is the newest game on this list as Bless was originally a PC MMO that crashed and burned hard.
It eventually got repackaged on consoles as a new game with a new structure and this new version is still not even released on PC yet. Bless Unleashed is flashy, fast, and full of action so if you’re into speedy combat games like Devil May Cry but want something online with more people, this could be up your alley.
8) DC Universe Online

DC Universe Online is 10-years old. That’s a long time for an MMO to be running. It originally came out as a pay-to-play only game back on PS3 and PC but since then it’s came to Xbox, PS4, and Switch as well with the PS3 version shutting down.
It’s the best superhero MMO on the market right now with an amazing character creator and tons of content to get through. You can play it for free and have a great time, or pay for some extra features and new missions.
7) Black Desert

My first exposure to Black Desert was years ago before it was even in beta whenever they released just the character creator on PC ahead of time. I spent hours tweaking characters and really getting obsessed with how much control it gives you. Now, it’s on consoles, still looks gorgeous, and has arguably the best combat out of any MMO on the market. Every class is a blast and it’s a ton of fun to play. However, it’s very grindy and a lot of long-time players complain about a shallow end game unless you really love PvP.
6) Warframe
Available on PS5, PS4, and Xbox One w/ Backwards Compatibility

If you took Destiny, made it a third-person action game, and geared everyone up as cybernetic space ninjas, then that’s what Warframe is.
This is one of the only games on the list with an actual, real next-gen version already out and available and it’s totally free. Definitely one of the highest quality games on this list, it’s just extremely dense and tough to get started as a new player right now.
5) No Man’s Sky
Available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox X|S

Not everyone considers this one an MMO, and that’s okay, but I do. You can meet tons of people while playing and spend hours charting the galaxy with friends. I know it’s technically a survival game like some of the others I mentioned at the start of this article, but No Man’s Sky feels special. Hello Games has really transformed what was originally a disappointment into one of the most impressive virtual universes out there. It’s vast, never-ending, and extremely fun to explore. Also, it’s gorgeous with zero load times.
4) Destiny 2

Don’t worry: if you like shooting things, then I’ve got a great option for you as well.
Destiny 2 is usually classified as an online shooter, but it’s got a large social lobby hub area and you can run into random players out in the open world zones themselves, just like most MMOs. Bungie are masters of making compelling first-person gameplay and they’ve outdone themselves here. It’s a great game, oozing with content, and the big group raids are a pure joy.
3) Path of Exile

Okay, give me one more entry on the list that isn’t a “traditional” MMO before we move on. Path of Exile is more like an always-online multiplayer Diablo game and it just sort of rocks. Progression is fantastic from top to bottom and is a ton of fun to dig into and it’s one of the most active games of its type out there with big new expansions every few months. Definitely recommended.
2) Final Fantasy XIV

One of the best things about Final Fantasy XIV is that the PS4 and PC versions feature crossplay, a rare feature that really needs to be more standard.
As far as AAA-produced traditional-style targeting-based MMOs go, this is the top of the pile regardless of if you’re playing on console or PC. It’s got the rich storytelling of Final Fantasy mixed with amazing MMO depth and some of the best visuals in the whole genre. If you love PvE group content specifically, this is a great pick on PlayStation.

I’ve picked Elder Scrolls Online as my top spot because it’s my personal MMO of choice most of the time, is available on both PS and Xbox platforms, and is even on Stadia with crossplay to PC on that service. It’s the most accessible and versatile of the big AAA MMOs with tons of content and a fully scaled game world meaning you don’t need to be a certain level before entering a zone and you can group up with friends of all levels for some adventuring.
It’s got great voice acting, well-written quests, and really refreshing action-focused gameplay all based in the deep lore of the Elder Scrolls universe as a prequel to all of the single player games. No fee is nice too!

Minus for the lack of sound
MMORPG is not for everyone
I immediately say — not an oldfag, the toy is 10 years old, but I have only been playing for the second day. The first location is a check for lice, if you drive in, how to go further, you will be drawn in with pleasure. You need to get used to the control, and there are two types of it — taps and something like a cursor. In the furnace, the cursor is more expensive for itself, although this is a matter of taste. You can play in landscape and vertical mode, which in my opinion is just great. The game is juicy in every sense. The fight is cool. She’s just so cool, I haven’t seen her like this in a long time. With her, there is a chance to «run away» from enemies before the battle begins. It’s simple, you see one enemy on the map, in fact, there is a conditionally «pack» there, you need to defeat everyone. Wonderful locations with cool animation.
The toy even has information about how much traffic you spent per session. I argue so enthusiastically, although I only went through the first quests after the “training”. It’s funny that the training is a hero’s dream in which you water the flowers, extinguish the rats and give you a top coat and a horse to boot. Then you wake up in a tavern, canonically. Probably ate purple mushrooms before that, which you need to pick up later.
I’ll go through the pros and cons:
+ nice graphics
+ it seems like a good plot and world, but I haven’t seen much yet
+ burns, this game can be downloaded in Java and run on calculators, what a charm
+ the game is over 10 years old
+ there are people in the game and you can collect units until you understand what’s going on, but it’s just that I’m stupid. And I don’t play MMORPG 🤦🏻♀️
+ interesting locations that I want to go from pixel to pixel
+ there is no cattle in the game (although this is my assumption, it’s just that the cattle would be scared of the interface and would not guess that in a dream-learning, so that cross the bridge, it’s enough, love, lower it)
