Hop on up here and join us for a Minecraft camel tour. While the Minecraft 1.20 update is still out on the horizon, we’ve got an oasis of info on the newest cute and derpy mob, and it’s even making an early appearance in a snapshot.

As you may have guessed, the next upcoming mob will populate Minecraft’s deserts, giving some life and diversity to the endless hills of sand and occasional cactus. Even better, they’re absolutely adorable and the perfect floppy-eared companion to choose for your latest build. Here’s what we know about the Minecraft camel as it makes its way towards release.

What do Minecraft camels do?

Meandering around the sands of the desert and clustering in desert villages, the new camel will join the exclusive—and small—family of desert dwelling mobs. But more than just hanging out as four legged scenery, the camel will be in a few other exclusive clubs. While the cutest club  it joins with release may be animals that can sit, there are a few other more important things the camel brings to the table.

While joining animals like the horse, pig, and llama as an animal you can ride, what’s even cooler is that the camel is the first animal in Minecraft that you can ride with a friend. Based on their unique size and real life capacity for multiple riders, the Minecraft camel is going to let you bring a pal along to ride with you. Perfect for those long sightseeing expeditions, or just bringing back your latest mining haul with a buddy.

We also know that the camel is going to have a «unique riding experience» and will be able to dash horizontally across ravines or rivers instead of having a high vertical jump like the horses. While mounted, Mojang says that certain mobs won’t be able to reach you to attack, making them great desert battle mounts.

So lets recap what we know about our new camel buddies:

  • Where do you find camels? Deserts, specifically desert villages.
  • Can camels be bred? Yes, camels will eat cactus, as some do in real life.
  • Can camels be tamed? It seems likely, since they can be bred, but we don’t know for sure.
  • Are camels hostile? Nope. They’re friendly fellas.
  • Can camels jump extra high like horses? No, Mojang has said their specialty will be the dash feature.
  • Will camels have inventories like donkeys? Nope, no inventories on them.
  • Can you ride camels? Absolutely, and so can a friend!

Can I check out Minecraft camels already?

You bet your humps you can, they’ve already been added in with snapshot 22w42a, and then revised once already to fix a bug that allowed passengers to trigger the camel’s dash ability while riding in the back, and then again in snapshot 22w46a to fix an animation bug. You can bet they’ll continue to get refined in additional snapshots and preview builds of Minecraft, although nothing will be as amusing as the idea of a passenger convincing the camel to go for a surprise run.

Minecraft’s new camels are already here in a new beta build

Minecraft 1.20 beta builds have started arriving just days after Mojang showed the first features for the next major update over the weekend.

Technically, anyway.

Mojang has released a snapshot build for Minecraft Java and a beta for Minecraft Preview, which are both actually incremental test builds for a minor update to the current version 1.19. They both include a toggle setting to turn on experimental features, though, which include the new Minecraft camel mob, bamboo wood, hanging signs, and pretty much all the other Minecraft 1.20 features that were announced so far.

According to the patch notes, camels will spawn naturally in desert villages, can be ridden with a saddle, dash across the ground, and seat a second rider too. In Java Edition’s patch notes , there’s an extra surprise experimental feature available: bundles. The small backpack-like carrying items were initially announced in 2020 and then faded in and out of different experimental builds for a while. They’ve returned once again, so maybe they’ll finally make it into an official game update next year.

I personally made a beeline for the camels and found a desert village with one already wandering about. Naturally, they’re as dorky as any Minecraft mob and the one I found first had decided to take a bath in the village well. Nicely done, pal.

As Mojang explained during Minecraft Live last weekend, it’s chosen to only reveal a few of the features planned for the 1.20 update so far. What we’ve been told about are the features that are already closest to completion, which is why we’re getting to toy with them in beta builds already.

It seems likely that we’ll see new features follow a similar pattern throughout the winter and spring, with Mojang announcing a new bit of the 1. 20 update and then pretty quickly allowing us to play with it thereafter. Mojang hasn’t given a launch date for 1.20 yet, but it’s planned for sometime in 2023.

If you open up your Minecraft launcher and go to the Preview tab of Minecraft for Windows or use the Installations tab of Minecraft Java to add Latest snapshot 22w42a, you’ll start downloading the beta version of the game.

With that done, you’ll need to enable the experimental features. In Java, this is done while creating a new world in the «Data Packs» menu. For Minecraft Preview, you’ll find the experimental features toggles under the «Experiments» section when creating a new world.

With the new features turned on, you can reference our list of Minecraft commands to locate and teleport to the nearest desert village or bamboo forest. Be kind to your camels out there, kids.
