It was basically all games, which was nice
So that wasn’t bad! No weird ads from The Rock peddling energy drinks and comic book movies. No awkward or cringeworthy skits. Just an hour and a half-ish of pure games: here’s a Microsoft and Bethesda recap for the 2022 “E3” showcase stream.
We began with a new look at Redfall, which gave us an endearing showing of gameplay: noting its stark differences to other similar squad-based shooters. From there it shot into Hollow Knight: Silksong, and although we didn’t get any concrete info on the release date, we know that it exists! I’m glad someone finally showed that thing at some stream in any form (how many Nintendo Directs was it rumored to be at? All of them?).
Those two kind of defined the Microsoft and Bethesda 2022 Games Showcase as a whole. We got some big AAA reveals and gameplay and a focus on indie games. I have to admit, it was weird to see Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV in there presented as “Microsoft” titles, but that’s just how things will be going forward. It’s wild to think about, if Microsoft can turn the company’s reputation around, what a future Microsoft “E3” showcase might look like.
The “one more thing” was actual Starfield gameplay, which I was beginning to think we’d never see. It looks…fine! Some people will think it looks more than fine, and others will want to see more before making a firm decision: such is the life of a Bethesda Studios game in 2022 after some tumultuous launches.
The biggest reveal was arguably Persona coming to Xbox. The total proliferation of that series is something that needed to happen as quickly as possible! And that “everything today is focused on games you can play over the next 12 months” quote from the stream was reassuring. Good one, Microsoft!
(Pocket-lint) — Although E3 2022 was cancelled, Xbox pressed ahead with its annual press conference.
As with last year, it was a joint digital event with Bethesda which was billed as part of the Summer Game Fest lineup of press conferences and shows.
It is now about to host a second stream, called Xbox Games Showcase Extended, with even more gameplay deep dives and announcements.
Here’s how to watch it live, plus our highlights of all the games announced during the first showcase event.

Windows 10/11 Enterprise E3 in CSP — Windows Deployment
- Article
- Reading takes 15 minutes
Applies to:
- Windows 10
- Windows 11
Starting September 1, 2016, a Windows 10 Enterprise E3 subscription is available through the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) channel. With the release of Windows 11, Windows 10/11 Enterprise E3 is available in CSP. nine0017
Windows 10/11 Enterprise E3 in CSP provides subscription-exclusive features reserved for Windows 10 or Windows 11 Enterprise editions. This offer is available through the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) in Partner Center as an online service. Windows 10/11 Enterprise E3 in CSP provides a flexible per-user subscription for small and medium-sized organizations (from one to hundreds of users). To take advantage of this offer, you must meet the following prerequisites:
- Windows 10 Pro version 1607 (Windows 10 Anniversary Update) or later (or Windows 11) installed and activated on upgraded devices.
- Have access to Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) for identity management.
Switching from Windows 10 Pro or Windows 11 Pro to Windows 10 Enterprise or Windows 11 Enterprise is easier than ever before, no keys or reboots. Once one of the users enters the Azure AD credentials associated with a Windows 10/11 Enterprise E3 license, the operating system transitions from Windows 10 Pro to Windows 10 Enterprise or Windows 11 Pro to Windows 11 Enterprise, and all related enterprise features are unlocked. When a subscription license expires or is transferred to another user, the Enterprise device easily transitions to Windows 10 Pro or Windows 11 Pro. nine0017
Previously, only organizations with a Microsoft Volume Licensing agreement could deploy Windows 10 Enterprise or Windows 11 Enterprise to their users. Now with Windows 10/11 Enterprise E3 in the CSP, small and medium organizations can easily take advantage of the features of the Enterprise edition.
When you purchase Windows 10/11 Enterprise E3 through a partner, you get the following benefits:
- Windows 10/11 Enterprise 9 Edition0043 . Devices running Windows 10 Pro or Windows 11 Pro can get Windows 10/11 Enterprise Current Branch (CB) or Current Branch for Business (CBB). This benefit does not include Long Term Service Branch (LTSB).
- Support for any number of users, from one to several hundred . Although the Windows 10/11 Enterprise E3 program in the CSP has no limits on the number of licenses an organization can have, the program is designed for small and medium-sized organizations. nine0004
- Deployment of up to five devices . For each user covered by the license, you can deploy Windows 10 Enterprise on up to five devices.
- Roll back to Windows 10/11 Pro at any time . When a user’s subscription expires or is transferred to another user, the Windows 10/11 Enterprise device can be easily reverted to Windows 10/11 Pro (via a grace period of up to 90 days).
- Monthly billing per user . This makes Windows 10/11 Enterprise E3 available to any organization.
- Ability to redistribute licenses between users . Licenses can be easily and quickly transferred from one user to another, allowing you to make optimal use of purchased licenses as needs change.
How does Windows 10/11 Enterprise E3 in CSP compare to Microsoft Volume Licensing and Software Assurance? nine0017
-
Microsoft Volume Licensing programs are more comprehensive and provide access to licensing for all Microsoft products.
-
Software Assurance provides organizations with benefits that fall into the following categories:
-
Deployment and Management . This category includes scheduling services, Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP), Windows Virtual Desktop Access Rights, Windows-To-Go Rights, Windows Roaming Use Rights, Windows Thin PC, Windows RT Companion VDA Rights, and others.
-
Training . This category includes training vouchers, online e-learning, and the Home Use Software Program.
-
Support . This category includes 24/7 technical support, disaster recovery backup, System Center Services Global Monitor, and a passive secondary instance of SQL Server.
-
Specialization . This category includes the ability to upgrade licensed editions (i.e., moving from an earlier release of software to a higher level release), as well as the ability to split the cost of a license and participation in Software Assurance into three equal annual payments. nine0017
In addition, in Windows 10/11 Enterprise E3 in CSP, a partner can manage your licenses for you. In Software Assurance, you, the customer, manage your own licenses.
-
In summary, Windows 10/11 Enterprise E3 in CSP is an upgrade offering that provides small and medium organizations with easier and more flexible access to the benefits of Windows 10 Enterprise edition, while Microsoft Volume Licensing and Software Assurance programs have more broad scope and provide benefits beyond access to the Enterprise edition of Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Compare Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise editions
The following table only lists Windows 10. More information about the differences between Windows 11 editions will be available after Windows 11 goes public.
Windows 10 Enterprise Edition has many features not available in Windows 10 Pro. Table 1 lists the Windows 10 Enterprise features that are not included in Windows 10 Pro. Many of these components are security-related, while others provide device management at a more granular level. nine0017
Table 1: Windows 10 Enterprise features missing from Windows 10 Pro
Feature | Description |
---|---|
Credential Guard | Credential Guard uses virtualization-based security to protect security secrets so that only privileged system programs can access them. Examples of security secrets that can be protected are NTLM password hashes and Kerberos ticket-granting tickets. This protection helps prevent pass-the-Hash or Pass-the-Ticket attacks. nine0014 Credential Guard capabilities include:
Learn more about this: Protect extracted domain credentials with Credential Guard. nine0017 Credential Guard requires UEFI 2.3.1 or higher with trusted boot; Virtualization extensions such as Intel VT-x, AMD-V, and SLAT must be enabled; x64 Windows version; IOMMU, such as Intel VT-d, AMD-Vi; BIOS lock; TPM 2.0 recommended for device health attestation (will use software if TPM 2.0 is not available) |
Device Guard | This component is a combination of hardware and software security mechanisms that allow only trusted applications to run on the device. Even if an attacker manages to gain control of the Windows kernel, the chances of running executable code will be much less. Device Guard can use virtualization-based security (VBS) in Windows 10 Enterprise to isolate the code integrity service from the Windows kernel itself. With VBS, even if a malicious program does gain access to the kernel, the consequences of this can be largely limited, since the hypervisor allows you to prevent the malware from executing code. nine0014 Device Guard protects in the following ways:
Learn more about this: Introduction to Device Guard. |
AppLocker Control | This feature helps IT pros determine which applications and files users can run on a device. These applications and files include executables, scripts, Windows Installer files, DLLs, packaged applications, and packaged application installers. nine0014 More on this: AppLocker. |
Application Virtualization (App-V) | This feature makes applications available to end users without installing applications directly on users’ devices. App-V turns applications into centrally managed services that are never installed or conflict with other applications. This also ensures that applications are up-to-date, i.e. they have the latest security updates. nine0014 More on this: Getting Started with App-V for Windows 10. |
User Experience Virtualization (UE-V) | This feature captures user-configured Windows and application settings and saves them to a centrally managed network share.
When a user logs in, these personalized settings are applied to their session, regardless of which device they are logged on to or which Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) session they are connected to. nine0017 UE-V provides the following functionality: |
Managed user experience | This feature helps you customize and lock the user interface of a Windows device to limit it to a specific task. For example, you can set up a device to be used in a specific capacity, such as an information kiosk or educational tool. After the user logs out, the interface will be automatically reset. You can also restrict access to services, such as Cortana or the Microsoft Store, and control your Home screen layout options, such as:0003 delete commands «Shut down», «Reboot», «Sleep», «Hibernation» in order to avoid access to them;

Deploying Windows 10/11 Enterprise features
Now that you have Windows 10/11 Enterprise running on devices, how can you take advantage of the features and functionality of the Enterprise edition? What are the next steps to take for each of the components listed in Table 1?
The following sections list the high-level tasks you need to complete in your environment to help users take advantage of the Windows 10/11 Enterprise edition.
Credential Guard
Requires UEFI 2.3.1 or later with trusted boot; Virtualization extensions such as Intel VT-x, AMD-V, and SLAT must be enabled; x64 Windows version; IOMMU, such as Intel VT-d, AMD-Vi; BIOS lock; TPM 2.0 is recommended for device health attestation (will use software if TPM 2.0 is not available). nine0017
To use Credential Guard on Windows 10 Enterprise devices, Credential Guard must be enabled on those devices. Credential Guard uses Windows 10/11 virtualization-based security features (Hyper-V features) that must be enabled on each device before Credential Guard is enabled. Credential Guard can be enabled in one of the following ways:
-
Automatic . You can automatically enable Credential Guard for one or more devices using Group Policy. Group Policy settings automatically add virtualization-based security features and configure Credential Guard registry settings on managed devices. nine0017
-
Manual . You can manually enable Credential Guard by doing one of the following:
-
Add virtualization-based security features in Programs and Features or by using Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM).
-
Configure Credential Guard registry settings using Registry Editor or Device Guard and Credential Guard Hardware Readiness Tool. nine0017
You can automate these steps manually by using a management tool such as Microsoft Configuration Manager.
-
For more information about using Credential Guard, see the following resources:

Device Guard
Now that devices have Windows 10/11 Enterprise, you can implement Device Guard on Windows 10 Enterprise devices by following these steps.
-
Optionally, you can create a Signing Certificate for Code Integrity Policies . As code integrity policies are deployed, you may need to sign catalog files or code integrity policies within your organization. To internally sign catalog files or code integrity policies, you need a public code signing certificate (which you purchase) or an internal certification authority (CA). If you choose to use an internal CA, you must create a code signing certificate. nine0017
-
Create code integrity policies on golden computers . If you have defined departments or roles that use distinct or partially distinct sets of hardware and software, you can set up golden computers that contain that software and hardware. In this respect, creating and managing code integrity policies according to the needs of roles or departments can be like managing corporate images. On each golden machine, you can create a code integrity policy and decide how to manage that policy. You can combine Code Integrity Policies to create a larger, or master, policy, or you can control and deploy each policy individually. nine0017
-
Audit the code integrity policy and collect information about applications that are not covered by this policy . We recommend that you use audit mode to thoroughly test each code integrity policy before applying it. In audit mode, no applications are blocked — the policy simply logs an event every time an application that is not part of it is launched. Later, you can expand the policy to allow these applications if needed. nine0017
-
Create an unsigned catalog file for business applications . Use the Package Inspector tool to create and sign a catalog file for your unsigned business applications. In later steps, you will be able to merge the catalog file signature with the Code Integrity Policy so that applications in the catalog are allowed by the policy.
-
Obtain the necessary policy information from the event log, and optionally include the information in an existing policy . After a code integrity policy has been in audit mode for some time, the event log will contain information about applications that are not covered by the policy. To extend the policy to allow these applications to run, use Windows PowerShell commands to collect the necessary policy data from the event log and combine that data with the existing policy. You can merge code integrity policies from other sources as well. This allows flexibility in the creation of final code integrity policies. nine0017
-
Expand code integrity policies and catalog files . After verifying that all the previous steps have been completed, you can begin deploying the catalog files and taking the code integrity policies out of audit mode. We strongly recommend starting this process with a test group of users. In this way, you will be able to perform a control check before the wider deployment of catalog files and code integrity policies.
-
Enable required hardware security features . Hardware-assisted security features — also known as virtualization-based security (VBS) — enhance the protection provided by code integrity policies.
For more information about using Device Guard, see the following resources:
- Windows Defender Application Control and Virtualization-Based Code Integrity Protection
- Device Guard Deployment Guide
Managing AppLocker
You can manage the AppLocker feature in Windows 10 Enterprise using Group Policy. Group Policy requires AD DS and joining Windows 10/11 Enterprise devices to an AD DS domain. You can create AppLocker rules using Group Policy and target those rules to the appropriate devices. nine0017
For more information about managing AppLocker using Group Policy, see the AppLocker Deployment Guide.
App-V
App-V client support requires an App-V server infrastructure. The main components of App-V are listed below.
-
App-V Server . The App-V Server provides App-V management, virtualized application publishing, application streaming, and reporting functionality. All of these services can be run on a single server or individually on multiple servers. For example, you might have multiple streaming servers. App-V clients communicate with App-V servers to determine which applications are published per user or per device, and then run the sequenced application from the server. nine0017
-
App-V sequencer . The App-V sequencer is a typical client device that is used to package (burn) applications and prepare them for hosting on the App-V server. You install applications on the sequencer, and the sequencer software determines which files and registry settings have changed during the installation of the application. The sequencer then writes these parameters to create a virtualized application.
-
App-V 9 client0043 . The App-V client must be enabled on any client device that will run applications from the App-V server. These will be Windows 10/11 Enterprise E3 devices.
For more information about implementing an App-V server, an App-V sequencer, and an App-V client, see:
- Getting Started with App-V for Windows 10
- App-V server deployment
- Deploying the App-V sequencer and configuring the client
UE-V
UE-V requires server and client components that are required for download, activation, and installation. These components are:
-
UE-V Service . The UE-V service (when enabled on devices) monitors registered apps and Windows for settings changes, and then syncs those settings across devices.
-
Parameter packages . Package settings generated by the UE-V service store application settings and Windows settings. The package settings are generated, saved locally, and copied to the settings storage location. nine0017
-
Parameter storage location . The settings storage location is a standard network folder that your users can access. The UE-V service checks this location and creates a hidden system folder that stores and retrieves user settings.
-
Parameter layout templates . Settings location templates are XML files that UE-V uses to monitor and synchronize desktop and Windows desktop settings between users’ computers. By default, UE-V comes with several settings location templates. You can also create, edit, or test your own parameter layout templates using the UE-V Template Generator. Parameter location templates are not required for Windows applications. nine0017
-
List of universal apps for Windows . UE-V determines which Windows applications to synchronize settings for based on a managed list of applications. By default, this list includes most Windows applications.
For more information about deploying UE-V, see the following resources:
- Overview of User Experience Virtualization (UE-V) in Windows 10
- Getting started with UE-V
- Preparing to deploy UE-V
Managed user experience
Managed user experience is a set of Windows 10 Enterprise features and related settings that you can use to manage the user experience. Table 2 describes the Managed User Experience features (by category) that are only available in Windows 10 Enterprise edition. The controls used to configure each component vary by component. Some features are configured using Group Policy, while others are configured using Windows PowerShell, Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM), or other command-line tools. To use Group Policy settings, you must have AD DS and Windows 10 Enterprise devices must be joined to an AD DS domain. nine0017
Table 2. Managed user experience components
Component | Description |
---|---|
Setting the home screen layout | You can deploy a customized Start screen layout to users in a domain. You don’t need to reimage, and you can update the Start layout by overwriting the XML file that contains the layout. The XML file allows you to customize startup layouts for different departments or organizations with minimal management overhead. nine0448 For more information about this component, see Customize the Windows 10 Start Menu, Start Screen, and Taskbar with Group Policy. |
Download without branding | You can disable the Windows items that appear when you start or resume Windows, and suppress the crash screen when Windows encounters an error that it cannot recover from. For more information about this component, see Download without branding. nine0130 |
Custom Login | Custom logon can be used to suppress Windows 10 user interface elements associated with the Welcome screen and Shutdown screen. For example, you can suppress all the welcome screen user interface elements and provide your own login user interface. You can also suppress the Blocked Shutdown Resolver (BSDR) screen and automatically terminate applications when the OS waits for applications to close before shutting down. nine0448 For more information about this component, see the Custom Logon article. |
Shell Launcher | Provides limited access to launch only a desktop Windows app through the shell replacement shell launcher. For more information about this component, see Shell Launcher. |
Keyboard filter | Keyboard filter can be used to disable unwanted keystrokes or keyboard shortcuts. Typically, users can use certain Windows keyboard shortcuts, such as CTRL+ALT+DELETE or CTRL+SHIFT+TAB, to control the device by locking the screen or closing a running application through Task Manager. This is undesirable on devices designed for a specific purpose. nine0448 For more information about this component, see Keyboard Filter. |
Combined write filter | You can use the Unified Write Filter (UWF) on your device to protect its physical media, including most standard writable media types supported by Windows: physical hard drives, solid state drives, internal USB devices, external SATA devices, etc. e. You can also use UWF to make the operating system treat read-only media as a writable volume. nine0448 For more information about this component, see the article Unified Write Filter. |
