The Most Valuable Pokemon Cards From McDonald’s

McDonald’s has released special Pokemon TCG cards in Happy Meals to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Pokemon, but should they be resold?

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Pokemon, McDonald’s has released a special set of Pokemon TCG cards at the Happy Meal. What started as a fun toy at the Happy Meal has turned into a hunt for the most valuable McDonald’s Pokémon cards.

When they first started to become popular, fans and scalpers, wanting to take advantage of the hype, rushed to their local McDonald’s and bought Happy Meals, only to resell Pokemon cards. Demand has gotten so high that McDonald’s has issued an official statement asking fans to limit their purchases to a reasonable amount of Happy Meals. They cost about $3 and include four cards, so it doesn’t look like it will take too many to make a profit. In addition, the cooperation began just at the time when it was necessary to cause a stir.

Pokemon TCG was released in the US in December 1998, which means it’s not the first craze. Many remember Burger King’s golden cards, which are still desirable but not expensive to this day. Therefore, those who consider these cards in terms of their value may not find what they are looking for.

Pokemon TCG cards are popular again

In 2020, Pokemon TCG cards experienced a big boom that continues into the new year. Collectors have been digging through their old cards in hopes of finding one or two that have risen in value, and some of them have risen. Wizard cards and older cards that don’t have a teardrop shadow behind the Pokémon have become particularly lucrative, with some selling for thousands of dollars. The Charizard Holographic Cards of the first issue were sold for an insane price of $300,000. As a result of shops running out of Pokemon TCG cards, the manufacturer has ramped up production to ensure fans have access to the packs they desire.

The Pokemon TCG resurgence has inspired people on YouTube and Twitch to open boxes of their old collections to view them, and the prices of many cards skyrocketed. Now that Pokemon cards are making a comeback, many collectors believe there’s a chance that McDonald’s 25th Anniversary Set will be worth something someday too. Some cards are already being sold at exorbitant prices.

McDonald’s set includes 50 cards, half with plain images and one with holographic foil. There is no official word yet on which cards are the rarest, but Holographic cards seem to be a bit harder to find. Each Happy Meal contains a pack of four cards, each featuring the Pokemon 25th Anniversary logo.

Complete list of McDonald’s Pokémon includes Bulbasaur, Charmander, Chespin, Chikorita, Chimchar, Sindakil, Fenekin, Froaki, Grookie, Litten, Mudkip, Oshawota, Pikachu, Piplup, Popplio, Rowlet, Scorbunny, Snivy, Sobble, Squirtle, Tepiga , Torchich, Totodil, Treko and Turtle.

Which McDonald’s cards are the most valuable?

The most valuable card is the holo-variant of Pikachu, which is not surprising. Pikachu has been the face of the Pokemon game for over 25 years and remains one of the most popular ever since. In second place in terms of value are starters from Kanto, Charmander, Bulbasaur and Squirtle. Unfortunately, Charizard’s holographic card was not included in the set. In general, holographic variants are more valuable than their regular counterparts for all Pokémon. However, after Kanto starters, the value starts to decline. Complete sets sell for $50 to several hundred dollars, but many individual cards can be purchased for around $2.

Pokémon cards can still be purchased from McDonald’s or sites such as Ebay and Mercari at this time. Speaking of monetary value, it would be a gross understatement to call sales fickle. One holographic Pikachu card was allegedly sold for an exorbitant amount on Ebay, but the exact same card can be purchased for less than $5. At first, Pikachu cards were regularly sold for $80, which is a solid profit depending on the initial time and price drop, but now the market is oversaturated with people trying to sell them, and the cost seems to be going down every day. In other words, if the price depreciates so quickly, then fans who haven’t cashed out yet are unlikely to do so any further.

Prices on Mercari are slightly more consistent than on Ebay. Pikachu holocard sales average around $35, while Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle holocards average around $10. Other Holocards sell for around $5, while regular versions of all cards sell for just a couple of dollars each.

So should fans run to the nearest McDonald’s and stock up on Pokémon cards? Like any collectible, the long-term value of the cards depends on how long McDonald’s runs the promotion, how many cards are put into circulation, and how many serious Pokemon TCG collectors want to add to their sets. In the coming years, they can cost hundreds, or they can be completely forgotten. At the moment, the latter seems to be the most likely scenario.

Since the prices on the internet fluctuate so dramatically, it’s probably not worth stocking up on Happy Meals just to resell the cards, but finding Pikachu’s holocard could make a profit of $30-$40 and selling everyone else could cover the cost of the Happy Meals «. Those who want to complete their kits can do so without shelling out a lot of money; they’ll just have to pay attention to the inflated ads.

Pokemon TCG 25th Anniversary Cards can be obtained by purchasing a Happy Meal at McDonald’s for a limited time.
