1,000-Player Battle Royale Game Mavericks Canceled

Development of the 1,000-player battle royale Mavericks: Proving Grounds ends as the studio behind it runs out of cash and is forced to close.

In sad news, development of the massively multiplayer online battle royale game Mavericks: Proving Grounds has been canceled. Development is being halted following the studio behind the game, Automaton Games, running into financial issues. Mavericks was far enough along in development to be running alpha tests, with its most recent test running on July 26. A public beta had been planned for November. It just goes to show just how sudden and surprising Mavericks‘ cancellation is for everyone involved.

According to a statement issued by Automaton all development for Mavericks at the studio is over. «Insufficient funding» is cited as the reason. It’s also confirmed that Automaton itself will be entering administration, the term used for a company reaching insolvency in the United Kingdom. For the foreseeable future, Automaton’s previous game, Deceit, will continue to be supported due to licensing agreements.

Joint administrators have already been appointed to Automaton Games to lead it through its insolvency.

Joint administrators have already been appointed to Automaton Games to lead it through its insolvency.

In perhaps uplifting news, Mavericks YouTuber RockhoundBlack reports that an anonymous source from within Automaton says that the game may yet have a future. According to the source, one of Mavericks‘ investors is interested in acquiring the intellectual property associated with the game and releasing a completed game as soon as 2020. The source also says that as much as 2/3 of Mavericks‘ development team from Automaton could shift over to the development of this new project.

While it’s impossible to verify the authenticity of this rumor, it’s worth being hopeful that as many of the game’s developers as possible can have a smooth transition to new employment

For those unfamiliar, Mavericks was touted as the first truly massively multiplayer battle royale game. It was said to feature the «scale and economy of an MMO, the progression and customization of an RPG,» built into a battle royale FPS. Its biggest selling point, however, was the idea of 1,000-person games, with teams of 200-to-400 players teaming up across multiple different «regions.» It also planned to feature a supposed 10,000 player social hub that it had named The Capital.

Exactly how much of Mavericks was completed and playable isn’t clear, as the pre-alpha of the game was still under NDA. In the months to come, more details about the game’s development will hopefully be shared. And news about the game’s future under a different development studio will also hopefully be confirmed in time, as well.

Mavericks: Proving Grounds, originally planned for release in 2019 on PC, is no longer in development.

What happened to 400 man battle royale and will it be resurrected?

Mavericks Proving Grounds, the 400+ man battle royale game, first came to light in early 2018. Since then, little has been heard about what would be the biggest battle royale game to date.

[ad name=”article1″]

The game did promote the concept of having a super battle royale game, though. It begs the question is a 400+ man survival game a possibility and if so could we see one soon?

Mavericks Proving Grounds

Developed by Automaton, they aim to not only be the first game to support 400+ concurrent players but actually target 1,000. As per their own description, the game is intended to be set in a photo-realistic, dynamic world. The trailer for Mavericks Proving Grounds can be seen below.

The game was initially slated for a release sometime this year but this has now been clarified to be late 2019. Unfortunately, the beta was a disappointing experience for most, resulting in optimism for the game dampening somewhat.

Officially the game has been put back to a pre-alpha stage but given many have paid 30$ to become a founder, this is unacceptable to them. Specifically, the gun play, especially in close quarters, is considered broken, as the feedback indicates.

Despite these issues, it’s possible Automaton will see better progress during the latter stage of the development cycle and the game will prove to be a success. However, given the poor start, another game may materialize and take the accolade of being the first 400+ man battle royale game.

Super battle royale

With incredible advancements in technology, a 400 man battle royale and beyond is an eventuality. Whether it’s server-side limitations, PC and console capabilities or simply a lack of interest in developing such a massive battle royale, nobody has yet produced a game on the scale of what Mavericks Proving Ground is attempting.

A combinations of these reasons are likely why established developers haven’t yet attempted this feat. Furthermore, with the exception of Mavericks Proving Grounds, no developer has even hinted at trying to accomplish it.

On top of this, the more players there are, the bigger the map needs to be to accommodate them. Developers like Rockstar have managed to make huge scale maps, albeit with very long loading times. Elsewhere, even developers like Treyarch have had to limit map size, as evidenced by Call of Duty’s battle royale mode, Blackout.

However, with the next generation of consoles coming soon, namely the PS5 and Xbox 2, both they and PCs now have the power to handle greater map sizes.

It will be interesting to see how battle royale, and games that utilize huge maps, evolve over the next several months and years.

Game Overview Mavericks: Proving Grounds

Fans of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will be happy to know that the new game will be similar to PUBG, but the scale of the map is much larger.

So far, only one mode has been announced, designed for 400 players. However, on a map of 12 square kilometers, 1000 people can fit at the same time. And yes, there should be only one left, so you have to try very hard. What’s more,

Mavericks: Proving Grounds has a ton of interesting mechanics planned. These include a destructible world, dynamic weather, social hubs, character upgrades, and even tracking down other players in the footsteps.
