Super Mario Party: Tips, tricks, and cheats

Ladies and Gentlemen the party has started on Nintendo Switch! The release of Super Mario Party marks the rebirth of friendly and occasionally not-so-friendly competition with your friends. In a lot of ways, Super Mario Party is similar to its predecessors. However, it’s a whole heck of a lot bigger and there are some new elements to get to know. If you want to be the dominating the competition at your next Super Mario Party party, you might want to know a few tips and tricks that will help keep you at the top of the heap. Here are some things that will keep your foes on their toes!

For now, all these tips will revolve around Party Mode which is the traditional Mario Party style. Hopefully, we can add some more tips for other game modes in the future.

Know your surroundings!

Having some familiarity with the game boards can be incredibly valuable. If you have time to explore the different boards on your own, that will give you an edge against the competition. It will allow you to know the most effective methods of getting to where you need to go or avoiding danger on the way. If you don’t have time to get to know the game boards you can always zoom out on the board when it’s your turn to get a bird’s eye view and plan your next move.

Fellowship of the party

One super effective method of dominating the board is by picking up as many allies as you are able. Every time you land on an ally tile you will be able to add another member to your team. This comes with a few different benefits. For one, you will be able to choose to roll your allies dice every time you roll. Each character has a different personalized dice which will offer benefits and drawbacks specific to that character. In addition, your allies will roll a plain dice with you. If you have a few allies with you, this will afford you the opportunity to zoom across the board with a speed that others won’t be able to keep up with.

Shop to win

If you find yourself fortunate enough to land on a tile which brings you to Flutter’s shop, you might want to consider spending a few of those precious coins to pick up some items to use later on. Having a Dash or Golden Dash Mushroom might give you what you need to get to the next star first. Conversely, if you want to stop one of your opponents from picking up a star, a Poison Mushroom might end up being just what the doctor ordered.

Play dirty, lose friends, and win

Not unlike other competitive games that afford you the opportunity to throw your friends under the bus, Super Mario Party has plenty of chances to make your friends hate you. If you happen to land on a tile populated by Lakitu, I suggest that you take him up on his offer. He will head over and steal some coins from one of your pals for free, or if you pay him 30 coins he will go steal a star from one of them. This is Mario Party. There is no time to play nice.

Snatch defeat from the jaws of victory

One thing that is important to keep in mind as you play is that it’s not over until it’s over. Once the game proper has ended it may look like you have no chance. Fortunately for you, that is not the case. As the victors are being chosen, you still have the opportunity to win some bonus stars. There are a few different bonuses which can turn the tide at the eleventh hour. You can pick up bonus stars for things like traveling the most spaces and winning the most mini-games.

The competition in Super Mario Party can get pretty stiff. There is a good amount of luck that goes into winning a game but familiarity can also help. Hopefully, a few of these tips will help get you across the finish line with more stars than anyone else.

What are some of your methods for winning at Super Mario Party?

Tips & Tricks for Different Modes in Super Mario Party

Rolling the dice in Mario Party mode

In the four-player* Mario Party mode, players take turns rolling dice and racing across the game board. You can add an extra level of strategy to the game by rolling with your character’s own specific Dice Block instead of a regular Dice Block. For example, Bowser has a high-risk, high-reward Dice Block—you might roll a 10 or lose 3 coins. Be sure to choose a character that suits your play style. Here’s another tip: Ally characters can help you out by sharing their Dice Block, giving you extra spaces during your turn, and assisting you in Team Minigames.

Talking the talk in Partner Party mode

Players need good communication skills to win Partner Party, a 2 vs. 2 version of the classic Mario Party board game mode (see above). At the start of each turn, you and your partner roll your Dice Blocks at the same time. The combined total of both rolls determines how many spaces you and your teammate can move for that turn. Here’s where those communication skills come into play! You and your partner can work out a route to certain spots like the Star Space, Event Space, and Item Space which require the player to land exactly on that space to get the item.

Working together in River Survival mode

Every second counts as you and your team race to finish the winding river course and the goal at the end of the river in River Survival mode. Paddling the in-game raft takes a certain kind of skill. All four players need to work together to paddle as one. If the right-side players row, the boat turns left. If the left-side players row, the boat turns right. You can paddle together as a team to aim for red balloons along the river to trigger Co-op Minigames. The faster your team wins the minigames, the more time you’ll get to finish the course.

Hitting the beat in Sound Stage mode

Rhythm is the name of the game in Sound Stage mode. Up to four players** can shake their Joy-Con controller and get their bodies grooving in hip-shaking rhythm-based minigames. Here’s a hot tip: Listen up! You need to pay close attention to the music to hit the right beat. And hitting the right beat is a great way to gain the most points in this mode’s Rhythm Minigames.

Banking shots in Toad’s Rec Room mode

Toad’s Rec Room** is a multiplayer mode that lets you pair up two Nintendo Switch systems (sold separately) for a cool tabletop gaming experience. In the minigame Shell Shocked Deluxe, which is exclusive to this mode, you can battle in-game tanks in custom arenas as they travel between two Nintendo Switch screens. Here’s the tip: If your opponent is hiding behind a Warp Pipe, you can bounce your shot off a wall to hit them!

*Additional accessories may be required for multiplayer mode; sold separately.

**Additional games and systems required; sold separately.

Super Mario Party. Party at Mario’s House — Igromania

At the time of the console’s release, the Nintendo Switch ‘s library consisted of only two games. The first one is clear which one, but the second one was a compilation 1-2 Switch , and it demonstrated the entertainment potential of the new console. Critics did not accept the project, but who listens to them?

A year and a half has passed, and 1-2 Switch is still one of the top five best-selling games for the new Nintendo platform. Obviously, buyers really need projects for joint entertainment in a portable format, and the release of an ideological continuation was inevitable. And therefore, when the key for 9 flew to us0003 Super Mario Party , we decided: it’s time to get ready for a party…

Welcome back

Strictly speaking, the novelty is very weak for 1-2 Switch: Super Mario Party is a continuation of the big series Mario Party , which turns 20 in December. During this time, ten licensed parts have been released, several spin-offs on portable consoles, and now — a kind of restart with the prefix «Super».

What’s the difference? The fact that the platform is the Nintendo Switch. This means that the developers used its portable capabilities to the fullest, and the gyroscopes in joycons, and the fact that any player has at least two convenient gamepads by default. nine0007

Yes, of course, Super Mario Party can also be played alone: there are bots of different difficulty levels, and an online mode (though you need to pay a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online to participate in it). But still, even the genre itself — the party game — hints that such projects are intended specifically for the company of live players. Up to four users can participate in a common session, both at one console and behind two if they are connected via a local network.

Jumanji returns

The game offers several modes, which theoretically covers the needs of any target audience. Gathered with friends in a relaxed atmosphere — welcome to the central mode of Mario Party. This is an electronic board game with mechanics reminiscent of «Monopoly» (or even «Jumanji» ), designed for ten to twenty moves (one to two hours): roll the dice, move around the map and bring to life events on cages to get to the stars that Toadette hides everywhere. nine0007

This is what the Mario Party maps look like so far. It is possible that in the future there will be more of them

The developers of this game obviously once worked as teachers — well, or simply attracted the appropriate consultants. After each turn (in which all four players participate), the action is interrupted by a mini-game, the winners of which receive bonus coins. It is necessary, for example, to find a fragment of the image faster than rivals or, holding on to different ends of the rope with a partner, draw up a certain pattern, bending around the necessary columns on the playing field. nine0007

To put it simply, you constantly change the type of activity, and here the developers achieve two important goals at once.

First of all, the Mario Party mode will appeal to even young children. By constantly switching to new activities, they will be able to keep their attention on the game, whose core is, in fact, Monopoly, which is far from the most exciting board game on the planet.

Secondly, thanks to additional entertainment, the gameplay is extended for a serious period: at least an hour for one game. And all this time you are not monotonously moving chips around the map, but you are competing, planning, catching up with your opponents and watching how all plans now and then enchantingly break into some random event. Alas, in this mode there are almost indecently many factors that cannot be influenced: events on cells, forks, dice rolls every turn. nine0007

On the other hand, there is also an element of planning here: for example, we very actively resorted to the services of a character who, for a certain fee, stole already earned stars and coins from other participants. True, the bots are also not averse to turning to him, and one of them snatched the victory on the last move just like that.

Of course, each winner will get their moment of glory…

Super Mario Party also has a team version of this tabletop game where you work in pairs, dice rolls are summed up, and you can move in any direction. nine0007

Not only board games

Mario Party is more of a «family friendly» mode (well, a group of board game fans). But the developers have not forgotten about the lovers of stormy and much more active parties either: they are offered a choice of two modes at once.

First, rhythm games. For a noisy company — perhaps a great alternative (or addition) Just Dance , only the tasks here are not so much about coordination, but about a sense of rhythm. String fruits on swords in time, take a pose, hit the classic boxes with «question questions» from games about Mario, spur the horse — all this can be «played out», or you can simply move the joycon, just to be in time at the right time. The mechanics are simple, but so intuitive that there is almost no room for misunderstandings or negative emotions. Well, unless your sense of rhythm fails you or your hands are shaking — then this mode is unlikely to suit you. nine0007

Rhythm games are divided into three levels of difficulty, and at the latter you have to be very fast and accurate

The second option for wild parties is the mini-game mode. There is no «Monopoly» — only the mini-games themselves, moreover, in different formats. For example, a multi-game championship with points victory in the spirit of Mario Kart . Or a long tournament, where after each victory you capture one cell of the final playing field and try to subdue the enemy ones. It kind of reminds me of the Chinese game of Go. nine0007

There are eighty mini-games themselves, almost three times more than in the same 1-2 Switch collection. In four hours, we’ve only encountered repetitive activities a couple of times, and we still have a few undiscovered ones left — for them, you need to play the Mario Party tabletop longer. After opening all the mini-games, another mode will appear, and there are also rewards for the complete passage … Well, you understand.

Warm up and wave

The map is presented in the form of a small entertainment festival, where the task of the heroes is to become superstars. It is for this title that they fight in all modes

Nintendo is one of those companies whose games often try to overcome any barriers of misunderstanding; many of the rules here can be understood, even if you do not know how to read. In Super Mario Party, the warm-up screen works for this: before each mini-game, its training version is launched with a picture explaining the conditions of the task. And until all users master the controls and confirm their readiness for the competition, it will not start.

At the same time, we repeat, almost all mechanics are utterly intuitive. For example, if you happen to control a plane and dodge bombs hanging in the air, then you need to move the joycon as if it were a real steering wheel: tilt back and forth to change the height and to the sides for horizontal maneuvering. In a cycling race, “row” with a joycon, as if pedaling with your hands. You need to fry the meat — hold the gamepad like the handle of a frying pan and carefully “toss” its contents so that it turns over to the desired side. nine0007

There is one gem. Four more and we’ll be superstars!

In a word, if “rhythm games” are more about “going wild”, then in the mini-games mode, a noisy company can arrange a real tournament, simple, but exciting.

As a bonus in Super Mario Party, you can find a «hidden» room where games for two to four people are presented, and this is … arcade, like straight from the slot machines! Baseball, and more exciting than the real one (which, generally speaking, is not surprising). Team collecting puzzles. Classic top-down PvP «tanks», from which you can experience a sharp attack of nostalgia. nine0007

And yet — a unique mode that involves two consoles at once: you need to correctly match the image, part of which is displayed on one Switch, and part on the other. Unfortunately, we have not yet had time to check the operation of the network code, nor the mode with two paired consoles, but we will have time to figure it all out. Stay tuned for updates on the site and our streams on the twitch channel!

Lost in Translation

The last «main» mode in Super Mario Party is rafting. For some reason, he turned out to be the most impregnable for us. Constant cries of “row!”, “stop, where!” and «noooo!», almost no progress . .. We were like the heroes of the classic scene about the sofa and stairs from series «Friends» . And the result was about the same: we never got to the finish line, although we were close.

Fedor Kokorev : Rafting is not difficult, but tedious . You can only fail him (at least on basic difficulty) by deliberately skipping mini-games — which we did to put an end to this torment. And that is almost over. Why break up a rather fun rowing with obligatory mini-games is not clear to me.

After accumulating enough bonus points, they can be spent on various useful things. For example, on advice — from basic movements to advanced online strategies

And since we are talking about failures, it is impossible not to note the localization. First, the quality of the translation leaves much to be desired. Secondly, the commentator in the Russian version sounds like a cheerful maniac: she laughs so madly, as if she is not just playing a game, but is going to butcher children into minced meat. This, let’s say, somewhat violates the atmosphere of the holiday.

If you often invite friends to your place or like to visit yourself, Super Mario Party will definitely not hurt you. If you are a family man — too. If you prefer noisy and active youth hangouts — what really, and it will come in handy here. All in all, for all outgoing Nintendo Switch owners, this is one of the best buys for fall 2018. nine0007
