Legend of Grimrock 2 is a dungeon crawling role playing game with a modern execution but an oldschool heart. A group of four prisoners have shipwrecked on the secluded Isle of Nex. Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart but a modern execution. A group of prisoners are sentenced to certain death by exiling them to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unbeknownst to their captors, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by crumbled civilizations long perished now. If they ever wish to see daylight again and reclaim their freedom the ragtag group of prisoners must form a team and descend through the mountain, level by level.

The game brings back the oldschool challenge with highly tactical real-time combat and grid-based movement, devious hidden switches and secrets as well as deadly traps and horrible monsters. Legend of Grimrock puts an emphasis on puzzles and exploration and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest of swords could be. And if you are a hardened dungeon crawling veteran and you crave an extra challenge, you can arm yourself with a stack of grid paper and turn on the Oldschool Mode which disables the luxury of the automap! The first part of Legend of Grimrock revived the seemingly buried dungeon crawler genre and the sequel further develops this success. I’ve played all these games since the 80’s and when asked to write a review for Grimrock 2, I gladly accepted. After installing the game, I sat for about ten minutes, just looking at the game’s shortcut. Part of me felt the same feeling that a child has when hesitating to eat a single piece of candy because if he did, it would all be over, and part of me was afraid that LoG2 would not be able to live up to the high expectations of following in the footsteps of Eye of the Beholder III.<img loading='lazy' src='/800/600/http/img.youtube.com/vi/yRYlSUKYrZ8/0.jpg' /> In the end, I still had to launch the game, otherwise it would have been one of the shortest reviews in the gaming industry. A couple of seconds after launch, you will be taken to the main menu of the game, which can keep you from further actions for several minutes, forcing you to just sit enjoying the main musical theme and considering the details of the initial screen. After that, the natural step was to go into the game settings and see what has changed in them compared to the first part. Yes, absolutely nothing, with one important exception, which will please many LoG fans. An option has been added to the game that allows you to cast spells with just one click, relieving you of the fear that in the heat of battle you might suddenly forget how to launch a fireball. Legend of Grimrock 2 is already bundled with the dungeon editor, but since I didn’t have time to try it out, its capabilities will be beyond the scope of this review. When starting a new game, in addition to the difficulty and already familiar old-school mode, you can choose the Ironman mode, in which you can only save near healing crystals.<img loading='lazy' src='/800/600/http/img.youtube.com/vi/iXfj3e_FUsU/0.jpg' /> If this is not enough for you, then you can additionally enable the option in which the crystals will be used only once per passage. There is also a nice opportunity to import your old party from the first part, but, of course, if something does not suit you, you can always create a completely new one or use ready-made characters. Compared to the first part, the character screen has received minor changes, more traits, skills and classes have been added, as well as a new Ratling race, which is great for robbers. One of the classes deserves a special mention, this is a new class — a farmer, which can change the whole dynamics of the game. The fact is that playing for such a character, you will receive very little experience for killing monsters, instead, pumping will be carried out by eating food. Also in the description of this class it is said that you can grow food yourself by digging beds and fertilizing plants. One of these days, I’m going to create a party of all farmers and have some crazy farming fun.<img loading='lazy' src='/800/600/http/i.rutab.net/upload/2018/10/mobilegaming/1540013283-22.jpg' /> Now let’s get to the plot. I can say that it is better than in the first part. The action of LoG 2 takes place on the secluded island of Nex, whose peace was disturbed by the company of four adventurers, by the will of fate, who fell on it after a shipwreck. The plot is presented in the manner familiar to LoG, notes from a certain Island Master. Movement of characters, actions with inventory and other actions, with the exception of casting spells, remained unchanged. The battle still takes place in real time, i.e. if you stand and pick your nose with your finger, chances are high that you will die with that finger in your nose. Received, in its time, a share of healthy criticism AI has been completely rewritten. The monsters have become smarter and more inventive, however many of them can still be killed using old tricks, such as driving the monster in a circle. However, the intensity of the fight has increased a lot and often you will be forced to retreat to regroup and heal.<img loading='lazy' src='/800/600/http/videos.winfuture.de/6221.jpg' /> Sometimes, the monsters’ long-range fire was so dense that I felt like I was playing a first-person shooter. If in the first part, the action took place in the monotonous corridors of the dungeon, then in LoG 2 you will find the perfect combination of ground and underground areas that are not similar to each other.
