90,000 Mexican Scary Tales, or the Madonna with the Scythe.

Cultists claim that Holy Death works miracles. Sometimes she is revered more than Jesus, because it was death that took him, therefore, she is stronger.

It is believed that she helps where other Saints are powerless. Often, people refuse the help of the Catholic Church, referring to the fact that she only teaches, and does not help. But Holy Death does not make an exception for anyone — everyone is equal before her: a prostitute, a policeman, a seller of pirated discs, a politician, and even a drug dealer. nine0003

Here’s what the locals say: “She’s just helping, not poking your nose into your sins. She does not require years of waiting for a miracle, she simply fulfills the request. And what kind of desire it is is on your conscience. And you yourself are responsible for it…

“It doesn’t matter what you give her: flowers, an apple, a joint of marijuana, candles, or something else. It is important that it comes from the heart. Whether you are a crime boss, homosexual, poor or rich, sick or healthy, smart or stupid — it doesn’t matter! Santissima has no prejudice, she never blames anyone. She is willing to help for free. nine0003

However, many, before praying to this Saint, first turn to Jesus, asking permission for this prayer.

“People ask for what they want — it depends only on them. Someone just comes for a blessing, someone — prays for the recovery of the child, someone wants to get his brother out of prison, someone asks for fair retribution, and someone — to bring damage to the enemy or offender. There is nothing shameful in revenge, if there really is a reason for it, otherwise everything can turn against you. Santissima cannot be bad, just sometimes bad people come to her and ask for bad things.” nine0003

Santa Muerte’s main areas of expertise are love and money matters, as well as protection from violent death and disease. First of all, she guards those who work at night and risk their lives almost daily: police officers, drug dealers, «bardel fairies», taxi drivers and mariachi musicians. It is the attributed Holy Justice that makes it so attractive to all who consider themselves undeservedly deprived by society or fate.

Initially, the cult arose in the villages among the poor, eventually becoming popular in criminal circles, and much later, the wealthy residents of big cities also became interested. But even today, the main places of worship are concentrated in disadvantaged neighborhoods. The first Temple of Santa Muerte was inaugurated in Mexico City at 1999, until that moment, the altars dedicated to her were only in private homes.

Externally, the new Mexican Saint resembles the well-known image of death — in a hood and with a scythe. She has a scale in one hand. In the other — the globe, which means that all the people of the planet are subject to it. The ball also symbolizes justice and equality for all, regardless of origin and status. Sometimes Santissima appears in a white dress and with the attributes of the Virgin Mary — the embodiment of purity and innocence. Hence another name for her is the White Girl (Niña Blanca). nine0003

According to legend, people did not know death before, but, tired of the hardships of an endless life, they turned to God with a request to send them deliverance. God appeared to the young beautiful girl he had chosen and said that from now on she would become Death — an incorporeal spirit, drawing a line under human life and ending the suffering of the earthly path. At the same moment, her body disintegrated, her beautiful young face turned into a naked skull, and, having received a scythe from the hands of God, Death set off on its way across the earth …

For Santa Muerte, special chapels are arranged, with an altar and the main statue of the Deity (a female skeleton dressed in a magnificent elegant dress). Also, the image of the Holy Death can be presented in the form of a colored figure or picture. The features of the sanctuary depend on the problems that the believer hopes to solve. The color of Santissima’s cape can be almost anything, and each has its own meaning.

  • Traditional attire — white — a symbol of immaculate purity.
  • To help in love affairs, Muertita’s cape must be red. nine0030
  • To settle problems with the law — green.
  • To overcome financial difficulties — gold (symbol of prosperity) or yellow.
  • Black Death is a force that overcomes life’s obstacles.
  • Santa Muerta in blue or purple — the awakening of mystical abilities, connection with the world of spirits.
  • Quite often there is a Saint in a rainbow robe who can solve all problems at once.

Many small figurines are sold in the markets for building home altars. Almost every merchant has a statuette of the Holy Death with dollars glued to it, or it can stand in a box filled with coins on the counter. nine0003

Images with long blond or black hair are also common. And in gangster circles, statues of the Goddess are sometimes constructed from the most natural skeletons of deceased enemies.

Many fresh flowers are brought to her altar — red and white roses, marigolds, carnations, tuberose, tulips. Withered immediately replace.

Fruit is also included in the traditional offerings, and of course, they must be fresh. Especially in honor are red and yellow apples (a symbol of prosperity). Santissima will not refuse coconuts, pineapples, mangoes, watermelons and bananas. nine0003

She is often given various sweets — chocolate, honey, sweets, lollipops, even Coca-Cola and chewing gum — to make life sweet and without bitterness. Alcoholic drinks are also included in the gifts. Tequila, rum, aniseed vodka, cognac, wine, liquor, sometimes beer, which must be in glass containers.

Loves the White Girl and cigarettes and cigars. This helps to eliminate envy around the asker. As a rule, tobacco products are put in 2 pieces (the number “2” and other even ones are revered in this religion). nine0003

Pure water (certainly in glass) is the main conductor of connection with Holy Death.

Bread is changed twice a week. At the same time, the stale one is not thrown away, but belongs to the park under a tree.

And finally, incense: frankincense, sandalwood, myrrh, rosemary, musk. They help clear negative energy and bring good luck.

Candles and aromatic oils will not be superfluous on the “Boney” altar. In addition to the above, money and even cartridges are placed at her feet (to protect against violent death). nine0003

Saint Death is rumored to be as strong as she is jealous. If you stop giving her signs of respect and attention, then she can suddenly take you into her arms.

Santissima’s zeal is also manifested in the fact that she does not tolerate images of other Saints or Spirits near her. The only Saint who is allowed to be placed next to her is Saint Judas (not Iscariot) — the protector of the disadvantaged and the patron of dangerous undertakings. The parishioners are afraid to place other Saints near her gaze. nine0003

The worshiper of Santissime carries her image with him, as a symbol that he always remembers her. Usually this is a gold/silver pendant or keychain. For greater effectiveness, the amulet is tempered on candle fire. Avoid touching other people’s hands to the medallion. Also, many adherents make a tattoo with the image of a Saint on their bodies — this protects a person from a bullet, arrest and other troubles.

Some rites are performed only by children (usually little girls), because Holy Death is especially favorable to their purity and innocence. nine0003

Communicating with Muertita (unlike the Christian religion) is accepted on an equal footing — with shoulders squared and head held high. Turning to the Saint, you need to look her straight in the eyes. Often a face or a statue is fumigated with cigar tobacco for a kind of purification. Treating her with various gifts, they treat themselves.

For Santa Muerte to grant a wish, you must come to her altar on your knees. This action is very clearly shown in one of the episodes of the series “Breaking Bad” (Breaking Bad).

Every first night of the month, a mass is held, followed by a blessing for all who come.

But some adepts have found a cunning way to give up this faith if necessary: they need to wash themselves three times with holy water, and then leave the statue with a scythe in a Catholic church.

The church condemns the cult, insisting that there is no connection between Santa Muerte and Christianity, but since the country has freedom of religion, its adherents are not officially persecuted. Nevertheless, repressions are periodically carried out against the followers of this faith, in particular, the demolition of chapels dedicated to Death is practiced. nine0003

At the same time, adherents of religion insist that their cult has nothing to do with black magic and continue to consider themselves devout Catholics. Moreover, political parties sympathetic to this religion have recently begun to appear, and the parishioners themselves periodically stage protests and refuse to vote in elections for deputies opposed to the recognition of Santa Muerte.

Due to the fact that the cult of Holy Death does not preach (like Christianity) humility, forgiveness, patience and other virtues that make people passive and easily controlled by the clergy, but, on the contrary, gives the adept confidence and strength to defend their rights, the attitude of the Mexican government towards dual culture. On the one hand, they do not approve of it, contemptuously calling it “the superstition of the dregs of society,” which it is a shame for a cultured and educated person to believe in. On the other hand, the cult exists and develops with the tacit support of the authorities, because the government and government officials themselves often turn to the “Madonna with a scythe” for help. nine0003

A fun fact is that during the World Cups, Santissima is dressed in the colors of the Mexican flag (green, white, red), and a soccer ball is placed in her hands (instead of the traditional globe). All this is done in order for the White Girl to bring good luck to the national team. Whether it helps or not, judge for yourself. But the fact remains that the Mexican national team is the most uncomfortable opponent for the strongest national team in the world — the Brazilian team. And over the past ten years, the meetings of these countries in official matches have brought Mexico six out of seven victories. nine0003

But not only football brings Santa Muerte to almost every home. Today, the image of Death is popular both at home and far beyond its borders. It has become a part of art, and artists and designers around the world actively use it in their work. The skeleton in an elegant dress appears on the canvases of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, on engravings and book illustrations by José Guadalupe Posada.

More recently, Nike has released a series of sneakers called Santa Muerte. nine0003

And if we take a closer look at the photo of the tattooed catwalk star Rick Genest (Zombie Boy), it is not difficult to understand what became the source of inspiration for his “afterlife” image.

Mexico is a unique country where the attitude towards death is radically different from things familiar to us from childhood. An integral part of the life of the majority of the population is the annual celebration of the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos), a holiday dedicated to the memory of the dead, which takes place on November 1 and 2. There is a belief that these days the souls of departed relatives visit their home. A carnival is organized all over the country, sweets in the form of skulls are being prepared, tequila is flowing like a river. Cemeteries are decorated with ribbons and flowers, and roads leading to dwellings are lined with candles so that the dead can find their way home. nine0003

The main attribute of the Day of the Dead is the figure of Calavera Catrina (Spanish: La Calavera Catrina) — a female skeleton in a luxurious dress, a kind of fashionista from the underworld — a kind of prototype of Holy Death. The variety of such figures is amazing — in addition to chic outfits, Katrina can have a dowry in the form of a dressing table, a piano, a car, or even a jacuzzi. Often she appears in the most unexpected images: from a bride and a flamenco dancer to a rock star and a geisha.

Día de los Muertos is a colorful event with no place for mourning. The townspeople dress up as ghouls, ghouls and Death itself. It is also customary to sprinkle ashes on the head and wash the bones of deceased relatives all night. Songs, dances and gambling certainly accompany the celebration, which is strictly forbidden to grieve and cry. Another interesting tradition of the Day of the Dead is the creation of caricature images of now-living important people, accompanied by poetic obituaries. nine0003

The Day of the Dead is a day to celebrate life! And it’s not for nothing that Mexican folk wisdom says: “I owe all the best in me to death!”

Do’s and don’ts on December 4, the feast of the Presentation of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple

There is probably no other person in Rus’ who would be revered like the Mother of God. She is called the mother intercessor, the hope of the hopeless, the comforter of those who cry, the healer of souls and bodies, and they believe that she keeps Holy Rus’, covering her from enemies with her snow-white veil — omophorion. nine0003

She chose God herself

«Birth of the Virgin Mary». Master of the Life of Mary, Alte Pinakothek, c.1460. Photo © Wikipedia

The Virgin Mary was born to aged parents Joachim and Anna and was promised to God from the very beginning. Before her conception, Joachim retired to the desert for 40 days and lived in a tent. Fasting and praying, begging God to give him offspring, because before the birth of Christ, childlessness was a curse. Anna stayed at home and also mourned her childlessness. When she was walking in the garden, an angel appeared to her and told the news that she would have a child and the whole world would know about her offspring. The woman was so delighted that she vowed to dedicate the child to God. However, it was not enough to take the grown girl to the temple where other girls were brought up, it was necessary that the little girl herself made a choice. And so it happened when Mary was only three years old: from Nazareth, her parents brought their daughter to Jerusalem. nine0003

According to legend, Anna herself placed the child on the first step of the steep staircase leading to the temple. The girl overcame the remaining 14 steps herself. At the top, she was met by the priest Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist. Already knowing that the girl from a poor family who was standing in front of him was the future Mother of God, Zechariah, in front of the amazed Jews, not only brought her to the temple, but also led her to the holy of holies — to the altar and thus indicated to her a place of constant prayer. During her stay in the temple — until about the age of 14 — Mary prayed at the altar, and sometimes the priests saw her talking to the angels. nine0003

It must be admitted that in the early apocrypha there are not so many details about the Entrance of the Mother of God into the temple. In some of them Zechariah is not mentioned, in others his role is played by the priest Aviathar, and in the third, there is no mention of the altar, but it is said that the priest placed Mary on the third step of the altar that stood in the temple courtyard. But all the works mention that the girl did not cry and did not look back at her parents, as is usually the case with young children, but, accepting her fate, she jumped for joy. There is also a difference in Mary’s age. In some legends, she is three years old, while in others she is 10 or even 12 years old. In the Orthodox tradition, the Entry into the Church of the Virgin is the spiritual birth of Mary, so the holiday is comparable in solemnity and significance to her Christmas. nine0003

It is curious that the image compiled in the 14th century by the Patriarch of Constantinople Nicephorus Xanthopoulos depicts the Mother of God as a fair-faced maiden slightly taller than average with a wheat-colored face, light blond hair, thick black eyebrows and olive-colored eyes. “In all things,” pointed out patriarch, “she was honest, said little and necessary; she was attentive and affable … modest, not feigned, did not indulge in effeminacy, preferred humility. until now her veil testifies» .

The feast in honor of the Entrance of the Mother of God into the temple was already known in the first centuries of Christianity. And the first temple in honor of this event was built by the Equal-to-the-Apostles Empress Helena, the mother of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine.

Why is it believed that Rus’ is the home of the Virgin

Photo © TASS / Vladimir Smirnov

It is curious that the celebration of the Introduction became widespread only in the 9th century, when Rus’ was baptized. In our country, the Mother of God was revered not only by ordinary people, but also by princes. The first stone church in Kyiv was the Church of the Tithes — a temple in the name of the Virgin. The first temple of Andrei Bogolyubsky, erected on the Rostov-Suzdal land, was dedicated to the Mother of God. The most ancient temple of the Suzdal Kremlin was the Mother of God of the Nativity — it was erected at the beginning of the 13th century. In Vladimir, in the 12th century, the Church of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos was erected. And, finally, the main cathedral of the Moscow capital is the Assumption Cathedral of the Kremlin .

The people revered the Mother of God, writing many apocrypha and legends about her. For example, spruce was considered a sacred tree in Rus’, because under its thick lower branches the Mother of God with the Christ child and Joseph the betrothed was once saved. They fled from the guards of King Herod, who gave the order to kill all the babies in Judea, and the spruce, seeing this, allowed the fugitives to hide at its trunk and lowered its branches to hide the holy family.

Folk eschatology represented Rus’ as the home of the Most Holy Theotokos. The sinful world was still alive only in Russia, which was ruled by the «white tsar» — the tsar of all kings, because he «holds the baptized, pious faith, stands for the Christian faith and for the house of the Most Pure Mother of God. » nine0003

The Blessed Virgin was the intercessor of every poor and offended person. The apocryphal “Walking of the Virgin through torments” went among the people, which described how the Virgin descends into hell and, with her prayers, saves even the most fierce sinners from torment for a time from Holy Thursday to Trinity.

Legends about the acquisition of miraculous icons of the Virgin were very popular (for example, the Tikhvin icon, according to legend, appeared to people by itself, miraculously traveling «through the air»), many miracles occurred from the icons of the Virgin, they were found miraculously surviving in conflagrations, they talked about spontaneous combustion candles near her icons and, of course, they talked about the miraculous appearances of the Mother of God throughout Rus’. The people believed that the Mother of God did not leave them, traveling around the country and showing many miracles. nine0003

What is necessary and what is not recommended to do on this day

Photo © TASS / Mikhail Tereshchenko

Few people know, but in the 19th century a poetic prayer to the Virgin, composed by Nikolai Gogol, became especially widespread among the people: «To you, oh Blessed Mother, I dare to raise my voice, washing my face with tears: hear me in this mournful hour, accept the warmest prayers, deliver my spirit from troubles and evils, shed tenderness in my heart, guide me on the path of salvation . .. «. The monks knew it by heart, the elder Isidore Gruzinsky sent it to Emperor Alexander III, Bismarck and the British Prime Minister Gladstone. The prayer even got to Athos and entered there in the collections of prayers. According to legend, the Gogols were directly connected with the Mother of God: she allegedly appeared in a dream to Gogol’s father Vasily Gogol-Yankovsky and pointed out to him his future wife. nine0003

A number of customs were associated with the veneration of the Mother of God. For example, on the eve of Friday in Rus’, the floors were washed especially cleanly: they believed that on Fridays the Mother of God could visit. For the same reason, flax was not spun on Fridays, «so that there was no dust,» but wool could be spun. In healing conspiracies, the Mother of God was mentioned as the owner of the key to the chambers in which Christ rests.

An apocryphal story «The Dream of the Most Holy Theotokos» was read over a woman in labor who was experiencing difficulties.
