Might and Magic Heroes VI Walkthrough Part 1: Tutorial Campaign

After the intro movie, choose the Campaign option to access the campaign.

You also may want to go to options and set the game to windowed mode so you can follow this HOMM6 walkthrough more easily

The first map is Griffin Bane
«Years have passed since the death of Duke Pavel  killed by Demons summoned by the dying wish of the Orc Shaman Toghrul
whose tribe had been slaughtered by the Griffin armies. Now a young man,
Pavel’s only son Slava accompanies his aunt, Sveltana, in the mountains
of the Griffin Duchy to investigate signs of a new Demon threat.»

Your hero will be Duke Slava. You can click on the bottom right corner of his icon to view hero background:

«Raised by his Aunt, the Necromancer Sveltana, after the death
of his father when he was only a boy, Slava nonetheless
managed to grow up a rash but good-natured young man.
Taking up the
title of Duke of Griffin when he came of age, Slava led a strong House,
and has five healthy, determined children who he is certain will do the
Griffin name proud.
The fact that the eldest one is a bastard borne by his first true love, Elisabeth -a woman the Emperor Liam forbid to marry- has pained him greatly.
Wars and enmities have taken their toll on him and his legitimate wife, Cate, and he prays to Elrath, the Dragon of Light, that the politicking that is beyond his control will not consume his family.»

«There will be a short intro with Toghrul, and the campaign will start.

Sveltana will tell you that there has been reports of Demons and tells you to investigate. The Duke is reluctant since he does not believe there really are demons in the area, but you investigate anyway.

Demon Sightings

This will be your first quest: «Rumors speak of the presence of Demons in the mountains northeast of Eastalon. Sveltana has brought the young Slava here to teach him what he means to be a Duke of Griffin»

Active Objectives: Destroy the two wolf packs
0/2 destroyed
Rewards: +1000 Gold
+3 Wood

From the castle, head south towards the first wolf pack. When you reach the wolves, the Encounter menu will pop up. You can either attack or retreat. Click on Attack.

The wolves should be easy to defeat even at this level. You will also have some tips from the game

«Welcome to the battleground!»

Your creatures stay on the left side with your hero behind as support. The enemy creatures stay on the right side.

Unlike your creatures, your Hero can not move on the map nor be hit directly during combat. But be careful, losing all your creatures will result in defeat.

Each creature on the battleground actually represents a stack of creatures of a same type, the size of the stack being indicated by the counter just aside.

It is the first turn of the battle. In each turn, creatures perform their actions on the battleground in a given order. In this battle, the enemy creatures move first.

Enemy creatures have just acted. Now it’s your Crossbowmen’s turn to act. These units can perform lomng range attacks.

Left click on an enemy creature to attack with your Crossbowmen.

Now it’s the turn of your Sentinels. These units can perform melee attacks.

Left-click on an enemy to move and attack with your Sentinels.

Note that you can also perform an attack with your Hero during a turn, but only once, and just before one of your creatures’ actions.

Your Hero’s attack button can be found on the command panel, at the lower right corner of the screen.

By defeating enemies, your hero gets experience points. When reaching a certain amount of Exp, your Hero will level up and become stronger.

Fans are picky people. And the army of fans of the world-favorite game series is all the more demanding, violent and often self-contradictory people. Give some innovations, while others with cries of «Hands off the shrine!» ready to burn any innovator at the stake of the Inquisition. And it’s a shame when developers, trying to please everyone, end up making a game for no one. This is exactly what happened with Heroes of Might and Magic — 4 — few people took the project adequately.

Fortunately, the flagship of the Russian gaming industry Nival picked up the banner that was shattered, heralding in the fifth part of the series the triumph of «classics 2.0» — with three-dimensional graphics, but familiar to all principles. And still there were dissatisfied, whose «hexagons are dearer to the heart.» Needless to say, the announcement of the sixth episode, given into the hands of the authors of the mediocre strategy Armies of Exigo and wargame Warhammer: Mark of Chaos, caused wariness among the adepts of sword and magic? As it turned out, not in vain.

⇡#Counter-reformation

The main problem of Might and Magic: Heroes VI is the general course to simplify the game. Following the words of the producer of the project, Erwan le Breton, that «Heroes», they say, is too overloaded, the executive Hungarians from Black Hole Entertainment began to cut and shovel the sixth part in every possible way. And these changes are evident from the first frames.

What has always been a kind of calling card, the «face» of any warring party in «Heroes»? Of course, her city. Partly, it was the types of cities that formed the first impression of newcomers about a particular race. At one time, Nival, having given the fifth part of the series full three-dimensionality, turned the demonstration of castles into a breathtaking spectacle. To the chic music, the camera slowly flew around majestic temples and powerful forts against the backdrop of a pastoral (or not so dear to the heart) landscape. You could rotate your citadel as you please, zoom in / out, and generally meditate on it for a long time.

Alas, we are not destined to see all this beauty in the new game. It is not clear what guided the developers in the bud destroyed one of the most aesthetically pleasing moments. From now on, the city screen is a small window with a flawed picture and a set of tabs for construction, hiring troops, trade and other economic affairs. Large icons climb one on top of the other, there is no visibility, as in the fifth part, and built buildings, with the exception of specific ones like the fort and town hall, are not visually displayed anywhere. It is clear that this is more likely just a cosmetic flaw, but those who are used to the splendor and beauty of the fifth and even third «Heroes» will find it difficult to come to terms with such asceticism.

There are now five castles. Additions, however, no one canceled, so that soon their number may increase. But initially, it is precisely five sides that are presented to choose from — the Alliance of Light (people), Inferno (demons), Necropolis (undead), Recalcitrant Tribes (orcs) and the Sanctuary. The latter is the abode of Japanese fantasy culture, inhabited by naga water creatures.

All creatures, including those from previous parts, have undergone significant processing and redesign, and the troops have been replenished with never-before-seen creatures with their own distinctive features. The development of cities itself has become much easier for two reasons at once. The first is the absence in the building tree of some buildings like the Tower of Magic, in which, taking into account the new role-playing system (more on it below), the need simply disappeared. The second is to reduce the number of resources to four. Sulfur, mercury and precious metals have gone into oblivion, which automatically lowered the requirements for buildings and high-level fighters. So hundreds of angels are no longer the ultimate dream, but a completely achievable reality.

The resources in the sixth «Heroes» are connected with another very controversial innovation, whose legs are growing, it seems, from the Disciples series. From now on, cities and forts create a zone of influence around them, which makes it impossible to intercept the mines and dwellings of creatures located in it. That is, you can leave the hero hanging around in the mine and you will rake in the proceeds for yourself, but as soon as you leave the enterprise, the resources will again flow to the opponent. The only way out is to storm the castle, and if successful, its territory with all adjacent buildings (except neutral ones) will pass to you.

Finishing the theme of cities, it is also worth mentioning the possibility of rebuilding captured castles to suit your faction. For a nominal sum, Orc shacks will be turned into the crypts of the Necropolis, and Inferno will be repurposed for the benefit of Elrath and his Alliance of Light. Thus, now there is no need to monitor the compatibility of creatures and the morale of the composite army — you can, without distraction, methodically collect a huge army of your race.

One can argue for a long time on the topic of the above-mentioned perturbations and their expediency, but what we should definitely thank the developers for is the reworked character leveling system. Spontaneity and random choice of skills are a thing of the past, giving way to a full-fledged role model. Upon reaching a new level, the hero, in addition to the standard increase in parameters, such as strength or magical protection, receives one point to develop his skills. All of them are divided into two large categories: «Physical skills» and «Magic skills». There is also «Hero Skills», but they develop automatically. Each category, in turn, is divided into several subgroups.

The leveling model is the same for everyone, but the racial affiliation imposes some restrictions on it. For example, a necromancer, by definition, cannot learn light magic. This can be attributed to the worldview of the hero. Depending on the decisions made during the game (released the cowardly enemy squad or not, executed the traitor or pardoned, etc.), the scales of Tears and Blood grow. As one of them fills up, it becomes possible to increase its level and thereby receive certain bonuses from the adopted orientation. The second line in this case predictably loses its meaning: points will still be scored, but it is no longer possible to swing it.

⇡#Five at the crossroads

«Heroes-6» deepens the mythology of the fabulous world of Ashan discovered by the chroniclers of Nival, and the action of the new part takes place already five centuries before Queen Isabelle and the events associated with her. But if earlier we witnessed the gradual fall of the Griffin Empire, now everything is exactly the opposite. Ashan’s humanity is united under the Empire of the Falcon, and the Griffins have yet to become the majestic dynasty they will be in the future.

The story begins with the hooligan antics of the headstrong duke Vyacheslav (almost all people here are of Slavic roots, so don’t be surprised), who voluntarily establishes good-neighborly relations with the orcs of the leader Kraal, which greatly annoys comrades from neighboring duchies. And now everything, it would seem, is good and rosy, world peace, and the prophecy about the coming invasion of demons from the fiery world-prison Shio just looms somewhere on the horizon. But no — the short introductory campaign ends, and Vyacheslav himself is killed in front of everyone by his own daughter Nastenka. The girl, without trial or investigation, is executed by her brother Anton, even though she swore that she did everything against her will. A large family of Griffins naturally falls apart, and the player will have to take the most direct part in these fraternal showdowns.

Actually, after the end of the prologue, the developers offer a choice of five independent campaigns, one for each existing race and, as a result, for each of Vyacheslav’s offspring, plus an epilogue. Moreover, the fact that five human cubs ended up being assigned to different, often completely “anthropophagic” races is explained very superficially, which only reinforces the feeling of delusion. And okay, Anton, who after the death of his father led the Griffin dynasty, but the rest …

One is resurrected by a necromancer aunt, another, out of desperation, let a demon into herself and went on a pleasure walk around Shio, the third ran away from her atrocious husband to the nagas, and the fourth is an illegitimate son who found shelter with the orcs. Each has its own character and motives, but the goals are similar — to find and punish the true killers of Vyacheslav, and, along the way, save Askhan.

At first, the plot seriously unsettles with its crumpled and chaotic presentation. «Where I am? Who are all these people?» — no one is in a hurry to answer thoroughly. Bang! Here Glory is friends with the orcs. Bang! Here he is at war with another duke. Bang! The griffin is already dead, the kids have fled, five campaigns, the choice is yours. In the campaigns themselves, the situation is little better at first. And the main engine of the plot — interlude videos — are executed so badly that there is no desire to follow them.

Against the backdrop of general graphic splendor and a riot of bright colors, these inserts (with the exception of CGI videos, with them traditionally everything is in openwork) strike on the spot with wretched animation and certainly close-ups of the clumsy faces of the characters. But if you come to terms with them and wade through the first missions of the campaigns, the narrative gradually begins to gain momentum and throw up interesting situations. For example, Anastasia in one of the tasks will have to travel through the labyrinths of her own mind, putting together scattered memories. Looks quite fresh and interesting. And already towards the end, when the plot gives out all the trump cards, you understand that the scriptwriters did not waste time after all … Like the rest of the developers, who, unfortunately, still failed to please all groups of fans.

⇡#Advantages:

  • an interesting plot after a dull beginning,
  • excellent design and nice graphics,
  • mature role system,
  • great music.

⇡ # Disadvantages:

  • “killed” city screen,
  • mediocre lock balance,
  • chaotic presentation of history,
  • Impossibility of simultaneous moves in multiplayer,
  • general course to simplify the game,
  • occasional glitches.
Graphics If you close your eyes to the nightmarish inserts on the engine, then Heroes 6 seems to be a very beautiful game indeed. The surrounding world is filled with bright colors, special effects are organically woven into the overall style, and the creature models delight with very “live” animation and exemplary attention to detail. Is that the loading and rare disappearance of textures slightly overshadow the overall favorable picture. 8
Sound In this regard, the game is traditionally good, although it does not offer anything new. Fighters yell menacing war cries, birds chirp in the world — nice, but not new. But the music is admirable. And although the soundtrack from the permanent composers of the series, Paul Romero and Rob King, partly consists of reworked melodies of the previous parts, it is still epic and damn beautiful. Although variety would be nice. 8
Single game Traditionally, players are given a choice of five large campaigns — one for each race, as well as a set of single scenarios. The missions are interesting and varied, the fights are complicated by various additional conditions, and towards the middle a normal plot appears. But in some places, the sharply jumping complexity associated with the uncontrolled reproduction of neutral armies is seriously annoying. 8
Team play The game offers a standard set of multiplayer entertainment familiar to all fans of the past «Heroes»: scenarios, duels and, of course, the «Hot seat» mode. Unless there was no place for LAN servers. The system of development of the dynasty, which is practically unclaimed in a single game, coupled with the connection to the Conflux network, work out their own in multiplayer, allowing you to choose a unique style and a worthy company. However, the lack of the possibility of simultaneous moves greatly slows down the already drawn-out games. 7
General impression «Heroes-6» largely repeats the fate of the fourth part and a bit of Disciples III, when rash «innovations» made the project lost in the eyes of the players of the old starter.
