Grab your wands and Hogwarts robes, because after disappearing (and reappearing) a few times on different streaming services, including HBO Max, the series has finally landed in one place: all eight Harry Potter films are now streaming back on Peacock.

The latest installment of the Fantastic Beasts prequel series, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore hit theaters April 15, and might signal an end of an era for the wizarding world on film. It’s possible that the streamer could be making way for a potential live-action TV series, which is still in early talks from WarnerMedia. If you’re just looking to reminisce, the retrospective special, Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, just premiered on HBO Max, which reunites Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, along with director Chris Columbus, for a look back at memorable moments from the films, behind-the-scenes footage, and new cast interviews.

where Hogwarts castle and other sights were filmed

We offer you to take a trip to the places where the famous saga about the young wizard was filmed. Here are ten real locations that will instantly take you to the fairy-tale world of Harry Potter

On May 2, fans of the Harry Potter films and books celebrated World Favorite Hero Day. According to the plot, it was on this day that the final battle for Hogwarts took place, as a result of which the boy with the scar destroyed the main villain Voldemort. Most of the Potter scenes were filmed in the studios of the English film studio Leavesden Studios, owned by Warner Bros. nine0003

Still, some of the places Harry Potter has visited can be found in reality. Here are the ten most beautiful locations that actually exist and allow you to touch the world of magic and magic.

The two-story cottage in which Harry Potter lived with Aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon and cousin Dudley was located on Privet Street. In reality, this house is located in the town of Martins-Heron, Berkshire in the south-east of England. It has a bathroom and three bedrooms, one of which was used for the Hogwarts letters scene. Interestingly, the cottage was only used in the first Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone movie. For the filming of the following episodes, it was decided to recreate its exact copy in the film studio pavilions — it was very inconvenient to travel to Martins-Heron. Two years after the premiere of the film, the cottage was sold for £250,000. Since then, its owners have repeatedly changed, and the interiors have been redone. But from the outside the house still looks the same, and next to it you can take a couple of beautiful pictures. nine0003

All sorts of magical goods are sold in this winding street. Here you can also drink the famous butterbeer or exchange Muggle dollars for magical Galleons. The scenery for Diagon Alley was the Leadenhall covered market, located in the historic center of London. It has been operating since the 14th century. The unusually designed painted glass roof and paved floors of this market attract many tourists. The store at 42 Bull’s Head Passage is especially popular. Through its blue front door, the characters of the film got into the Leaky Cauldron bar. And yet most of the scenes were filmed at Leavesden Studios. If you dream of seeing a magical street that looks almost exactly like the one shown on the screen, head to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter Park in Florida. nine0003

A replica of the bank in which wizards kept galleons and hard-working goblins did all the money transactions opened last year at the Harry Potter Museum in Watford. Many members of the original film crew were involved in creating the sets. In addition, authentic items used during filming were placed here. However, the film itself was not created in the studios of the Warner Bros. film studio, but in the exhibition hall of the Australian Embassy in London. This 160-foot room is decorated with crystal chandeliers and 1.2 thousand tons of Australian marble. This is where Hagrid brings Harry in Philosopher’s Stone to get some money from the vault to buy textbooks, an owl, and a wand. Although the hall is closed to the public, the interiors of the magic bank can be seen through the window. nine0003

Seeing breathtaking views from the window of the Hogwarts Express is the dream of millions of children. In the film, a magical steam locomotive rides on a beautiful stone bridge. Here, too late for school, Harry and Ron narrowly avoid a train in a flying car. This is not the result of computer graphics, but a place that exists in reality. For filming, the director chose one of the most scenic train routes in the world, the West Highland Line. It connects the port of Mallay in the west of Scotland with the city of Fort William. And the arch bridge shown on the screen is the Glenfinnan Viaduct, located in Highland County. The Jacobite Steam Train runs on it today. For fans of films and books about Harry Potter, there are special carriages, the interior of which fully reproduces the atmosphere of the Hogwarts Express. nine0003

According to writer JK Rowling, the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is located in Scotland. This is a huge medieval castle with battlements and many round towers. In the form in which we are used to seeing it in the film, Hogwarts does not exist: the building was created with the help of scenery and special effects — piece by piece. And yet, real locations were used to shoot some scenes. For example, Alnwick Castle, built in the 11th century, served as the school’s prototype. It was here that Madame Trick gave her first broomstick flying lesson, and a year later Harry and Ron landed in an Whomping Willow in a flying machine. Alnwick is located in the town of the same name on the southern border of Scotland, so the most convenient way to get there is from Edinburgh. On the territory of the castle, you can not only take atmospheric photos, but also learn how to fly on a broomstick. nine0003

If you have long dreamed of walking through intricate corridors with narrow arched windows and talking pictures, head to Gloucester Cathedral. Many scenes from the everyday life of young wizards were filmed within the walls of one of the oldest Christian churches in England. To do this, the production designers had to disguise not only the electrical wiring and religious symbols on the stained-glass windows, but also about a hundred tombstones on the floor of the monastery. The latter were upholstered with roofing felt, polished and painted to match the stone slabs of the floor. Local parishioners were against filming, but the leadership of the cathedral decided to make a concession. Here Ginny Weasley wrote scary messages in blood, and Harry, Ron and Hermione fought with a mountain troll. In addition, for the sake of the scene in which Moaning Myrtle flooded the toilet, a real flood was staged in the corridors of the cathedral. nine0003

For the main hall, where Hogwarts students ate and danced at balls, and Professor Dumbledore delivered welcoming speeches, they also found a suitable location in the real world. The set designers were inspired by the architecture of the dining hall at Christ Church College. It has not changed its purpose since the 16th century and for a long time remained the largest at Oxford University. To enter this ancient hall, you must purchase a ticket. Here you can admire the luxurious interiors, enjoy hot tea or go on a tour dedicated to the world of Harry Potter. By the way, other locations of Christ Church College are also involved in some scenes of the film. For example, the street courtyard and the stone stairs that Hermione Granger descended to the Yule Ball in Goblet of Fire. nine0003

The trees in the Forbidden Forest grow so close together that even on a sunny day it is dark. It was strictly forbidden for Hogwarts students to visit this creepy place unaccompanied by teachers — because of the magical creatures inhabiting it. After all, in addition to harmless bowtrucks and unicorns, there were colonies of carnivorous acromantula spiders and werewolves. In the universe of J.K. Rowling, the forest adjoined directly to the castle of the school, but in reality it is located in Buckinghamshire. It is 30 km from London. Many episodes in the forbidden zone from the first parts of the Potter series were filmed in the 560-acre Black Park Country reserve. It is here that the protagonist tames and saddles the hippogriff from Prisoner of Azkaban. And in Goblet of Fire, Hagrid brings him here to show him the dragons before the next match of the tournament. nine0003

All films about the young wizard were filmed in the UK. And yet, there was one place for which the film crew decided to cross the border. In the sixth part of the saga, Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore go to the sea cave, where one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes is to be kept. Having transgressed from Hogwarts, they find themselves on a block of stone in the midst of raging waves. In front of the heroes is a huge sheer cliff, stretching into the sky. This episode was filmed in the west of Ireland, with the entrance to Voldemort’s Cave part of the picturesque Cliffs of Moher on the Atlantic Ocean in County Clare. The scene is only a few seconds long, but it took about a week to film. Daniel Radcliffe and Michael Gambon did not climb the rock: they were filmed in a film studio and “transferred” to the screen using computer graphics. nine0003

Photo: wikimedia.org

Another location that exists on maps is Godric’s Hollow. According to the plot, this is a small settlement in the south-west of England, in which Lily and James Potter tragically die. In the first part of the Deathly Hallows, Harry decides to go to his homeland to get answers to new questions. Scenes set in Godric’s Hollow were filmed in the medieval village of Lavenham in Suffolk. The work on the film was carried out in the strictest secrecy, while none of the actors came to Lavenham. The characters of Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson were added to the finished shots using graphics. By the way, there was no permission to shoot the house in which the filmmakers «settled» the Potters. The owners accidentally recognized their property on a screen in a cinema. nine0003
