So I got bored just before the maintenance earlier and though, you know, Nvidia just released a new driver for BFA today so let’s do a performance test on the differences between DX11 and DX12 on a GTX 1070. My PC specs will be below the post.

Why test this?

In MMO’s, the main performance bottleneck is usually the CPU as there are usually a ton of things to process at the same time. NPCs, players, trees, shaders and shadows, rocks, fences etc etc which saturate your CPU with draw calls.

What is DirectX 12?

DX12 (and Vulkan) and other lower lvl APIs are meant to alleviate this by allowing lower level access to your GPU, which increases the efficiency your CPU is able to process draw calls by several magnitudes. This means, if properly implemented, DX12 will increase your FPS in draw call limited situations while also utilizing your CPU more efficiently with an end result of less over-reliance of high single core performance and higher overall FPS. How did I do the test?

I decided to test this with flight paths. I have decided that going from Bradenbrook in Val’sharah to Hafr Fjall in Stormheim goes through the heaviest CPU zones in Legion. With the dense trees in Val’sharah to the long draw distances and high LOD of Suramar, it is an appropriately tough CPU test as you will later see.

The primary performance metric for smooth gameplay is frametime, the amount of time it takes to render 1 frame. As you can see, DX12 has a ton of frametime spikes which manifest directly in the game as jerking (heh). In other terminology, this is a frame drop. This leads to gameplay that is inconsistent and can affect your in-game performance. Trying to avoid a boss mechanic that requires quick movement? Here’s a free frametime spike so you are now facing the complete wrong direction as you disengage in the totally wrong direction, wiping your raid. As I mentioned above, you can see how CPU intensive these zones are when you see frame rate and GPU usage dipping at the same time. The CPU is overwhelmed by the number of objects to process, leaving no processing power to handle your GPU.

As promised, my PC specs are as below :

i5-3570k @ 4.4GHz GTX 1070 8GB RAM WoW is on SSD XB271HU 1440P @ 144hz WoW settings at 7 No applications open except MS Paint, Snipping Tool and MSI Afterburner for the GPU monitoring.

Conclusion

Avoid DX12 as an Nvidia user until such a time where new Nvidia drivers are released that improve performance, or Nvidia release a new GPU architecture that isn’t half gimped to hell with DX12 (we can hope).

Although Destiny 2 is a DirectX 11-based game, many of which favor GeForce cards, AMD’s Radeon RX Vega cards perform admirably against their GeForce competition. Vega 64 is 13% faster than GTX 1080, while Vega 56 beats GTX 1070 Ti by ~7% using the Highest quality preset at 2560×1440. In turn, our MSI GTX 1070 Ti Titanium 8G is 13% quicker than the vanilla GTX 1070.

Radeon RX Vega 56 does, however, exhibit more frame time spikes than any other card in our line-up, resulting in quantifiably higher frame time variance. Smoothness doesn’t seem to be affected much, though; the GTX 1070 appears less fluid, according to our unevenness index.

Early benchmarks of the Destiny 2 beta showed AMD’s fastest cards trailing GeForce GTX 1070, so it’s surprising to see them do so well at 2560×1440 using the game’s Highest quality preset. But 4K isn’t as forgiving to Radeon RX Vega, even though we drop a quality level to High.

In this series of benchmarks, GeForce GTX 1070 beats the Radeon RX Vega 56. GTX 1070 Ti only exacerbates the difference. It cannot help that Vega 56 continues to suffer higher frame time variance than the rest of the field, either.

GeForce GTX 1080 similarly ends up ahead of Vega 64 by more than 12%, whereas it lost to AMD’s flagship at 2560×1440.

Despite its losses at 3840×2160, AMD clearly put a lot of effort into optimizing its driver since beta. We’re keenly aware that performance in Destiny 2 is heavily dependent on the settings you choose. Conceivably, at this point, it’d be possible to alter individual options to put AMD or Nvidia on top.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided: DirectX 12 tests

We have already tested AMD and NVIDIA video cards in the recently released Deus Ex: Mankind Divided game, but so far only under DirectX 11. Meanwhile, a patch with support for the DirectX 12 API has appeared, so we decided to re-test all the same video cards in order to evaluate the performance gain.

The developers of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided separately indicate that support for DirectX 12 is only preliminary. That is, we have an early, not final, implementation. To get the patch in the Steam settings, you need to activate the beta version of the game. In tests, we did encounter several «crashes» that were not under DirectX 11. Also, artifacts and errors periodically appeared on the screen.

We used Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.9.1 and NVIDIA GeForce 372. 70 drivers. We again took our test system for testing video cards based on the Intel Core i7-39 processor50X. For DirectX 12 tests, it does not fit as well, since DirectX 12 is designed to remove the limitations on CPU performance by increasing the number of Draw Calls processed, which speeds up graphics performance. Therefore, DirectX 12 on fast processors does not always show its advantages. Let’s see what result we get in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

The test results immediately show the following: if most AMD video cards benefit from switching to DirectX 12 API at most resolutions, giving higher fps, NVIDIA video cards most often lose. For example, GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition at 1.9 resolution20 x 1.080 pixels slows down by 20% after switching to DirectX 12. A massive drop in performance on NVIDIA GPUs is observed at low resolutions, although the difference of a few percent is not so great. On the other hand, AMD video cards even at low resolutions show a noticeable gain of up to 15%.

At high resolutions, the lack of NVIDIA video cards becomes less significant, under DirectX 12 video cards start working a few percent faster. Whether it is worth switching to a new graphics API for this is an open question.
