God of War Guide — Nigel Blythe on DTF

Everything you need to know about the role-playing system. Builds. Adviсe.

12914
views

Once, purely for the sake of interest and experience in writing such materials, I wrote a guide to Dark Souls. I wrote and forgot. Recently returned and found 176,000 clicks on it. Well, this is just a funny case in the subject, which I wanted to share.

In general, why would anyone need a guide to God of War 2018 in 2022?

1) There will be a sequel soon, and it will have the same or similar mechanics.

2) Some people still don’t care about these mechanics. Many, in principle, do not like the role-playing system and they do not want to understand it.

3) Someone might want to play the game just now, before the release of Ragnarok. And I would like to make life easier for such people. The game hides or poorly explains some things.

I will give general explanations and recommendations, and then I will offer my version of the build (which I think is the best) and an approximate procedure.

Parameters

So, the level of Kratos depends on the things put on him. The minimum level is -1, the maximum is 10 (8 on New Game). I will describe the main parameters of Kratos in order of importance of their pumping.

Runes . Increases damage from runic attacks, increases the effectiveness of the elements (the rate of accumulation of frost and fire on enemies). Runic attacks are a very important part of the combat system. In fact, they are our strategic weapons. We cannot use them often, so we need them as strong as possible.

Runes have a very low cap (the limit after which the parameter increase is meaningless), only 175 units. However, I would advise you to farm 200 to get bonuses to most moves. The description of bonuses can be read on the Skills tab in the game. If you do not need bonuses, you can leave them around 175.

By the way, in the Russian version, the description for receiving [R1 R1 R1 R2] ax is incorrect, and the bonus works there already at 200 (not 250) (but this is not accurate, maybe 175) (I’m too lazy to check).

Strength . Increases damage from all normal attacks. That’s what the game tells us. In fact, Strength also increases the damage of many runic attacks. This is one of the reasons why it is most beneficial to develop both the Force and the Runes at the same time. Well, having normal damage from your hand is always important.

Strength has a very high cap of ~380. But we are saved by the fact that Rune has a low cap, which is very easy to achieve, which allows you to add more to the strength.

Recovery . Reduces the cooldowns of all abilities: runic attacks, talismans, and rune summon Atreus. It’s simple: the more often we can use these abilities, the stronger we will be.

There is no cap as such, and the parameter works until all runics reach the minimum cooldown. But we can’t reach such high values, so I advise you to leave Recovery in the region of 150-200 points.

Protection . Reduces damage taken. This is the main parameter on which our survival depends. Cap ~280. It makes no sense to strive to develop Protection (by adding enchantments), because any armor has this parameter at the proper level, because this is its main function. On NG+, I recommend having at least 250 Defense to get bonuses to almost all melee attacks.

Vitality . Increases health and grants poise. Not a very useful setting. We get the main portion of health from finding all nine Apples of Idunn, and in order to get something noticeable from Vitality, we will have to invest heavily in it, to the detriment of other parameters. Poise does not work like in Dark Souls, here it is endless. But reaching numbers where few people can interrupt Kratos’ attacks is very difficult, and it doesn’t make sense.

However, if in the process of building a build something drops into Vitality, then this is good and can save you from death once again.

Luck . Increases the chance of triggering perks from equipped equipment. The cap is infinite until all perks start to work with a probability of 100%. But such numbers are achieved only by cheats. What can I say, I bet a lot of Luck, and bet very little. Almost didn’t notice the difference. That is, in the range in which we can legally pump Luck, for us there is not much difference how much it will be. Therefore, this parameter is in last place.

It is worth mentioning the enemies separately. They seem to have all the same parameters, they just don’t need all of them. We only need to understand that the Vitality of enemies works in a similar way. That is, if the strength of your attacks is not enough, you will not be able to interrupt their poise, that is, you will not be able to stagger them and throw them into the air. Therefore, I strongly do not recommend fighting enemies that are 3 levels higher than you, and in the case of those that are 2 higher, you can forget about juggling.

Enchantment

We can insert enchantments into the slots on the armor. They increase parameters and give perks. Many people are perplexed by the management of charms. There are a lot of them, it is easy to get confused in them. Now I will explain how to actually deal with them.

There are two types of enchantments: random and unique named. The first ones are mostly just garbage. The exceptions are enchantments with the perk «Chance to gain a burst of health on successful parry» and enchantments that give a lot of power (10-15).

Unique enchantments are much more useful. We get them as a reward for quests, in some chests and in treasures. All of them have a unique name, not random nonsense. They cannot be sold in the store (they are not even displayed there), that is, they are with you forever. Therefore, when the inventory is clogged, we boldly sell to the gnomes everything that appears in the enchantment menu, except for the cases described above.

Actually, our goal is to collect all the unique spells and use them almost exclusively.

Getting the most out of New Game

In this lengthy algorithm, I will take into account that you inadvertently or deliberately chose the maximum complexity. In order not to burn your ass, at first it’s better to just go through the storyline. The game along the way gives everything you need, you just need to search the locations well and use what you found / bought from the gnomes. Along the way, you will find sets of armor, each of which increases either Runes, or Recovery, and sometimes several characteristics at once (in addition to Defense). I advise you to wear these sets, because the Strength will quickly grow by itself due to pumping the ax, but the Runes will lag behind.

So far, our goal is to pass the Secret Chamber of Tyr (where we turn over the temple) and find Set of the world serpent there. With him, we can already go through the optional.

After that, you need to complete the gnome quests and get the set of the gnome king. Most importantly, I recommend choosing the Royal Breastplate of Sindri (the rest of the parts are up to you), it has very favorable parameters for us and a very powerful perk that saves us from fails when using runic attacks. In the future, it will need to be pumped to the maximum. The rest of the set is better not to download, otherwise go broke.

In this set, you can go through the rest of the optional and fight with some Valkyries. I’ll say right away that we will need from the Valkyries. Valkyrie Legguards, Valkyrie Hilts (for blades), Wing of the Fallen (for axe), Talisman of the Worlds — all this is an important part of our build, all this will need to be upgraded. They will also drop some important enchantments.

More about the Wing of the Fallen. This handle has a hidden property — it adds a wave to the last hit in a combo of four R1s. This wave has the same poise breaking as runic attacks. Very helpful. The secret handle has a similar wave (which is obtained by turning the camera in different directions in a special place, many people probably know about it), but it does not have such poise breaking, and besides, the handle itself is generally worse.

Once you’re ready, go through Muspelheim and Niflheim. It will be very difficult there. In Niflheim, I recommend choosing bracers from the Deathmist set, and everything else from the Grimmist. We will use the above bracers in our build, BUT if you don’t have to farm Muspelheim for scrap, you can upgrade the bracers there for strength instead. This will give us more Strength, but it will take away some Runes.

Next, I’ll attach all the clothes and parameters that we should have at the end of the game (Njord’s Stone drops from Sigrun, you can wear the Soul of Andvari before you get it).

New Game +

Here we simply duplicate our build, updating all of its elements to the «red» variants. This does not apply to Eye of the Outer World charka, as it does not have a red variant. You will also have more choice of enchantments, as all talismans on NG+ have slots. I recommend paying attention to the spells that are crafted from items, namely from the Amulet of Kvasir + (Shift the worlds aka Witch Time in the form of an enchantment, not a talisman) and the set of the Ancients + (maximum resistance to almost all status effects).

At the end of NG+ and on NG++, I can also change Valkyrie Gaiters for Zeus’ Belt. Each element of the Zeus set doubles the damage from normal attacks and doubles the damage against you by the same amount.

Tips

Various little tips that come to my mind.

Don’t fight enemies 3 levels bigger than you (if you went somewhere ahead of time), take care of your nerves.

Upgrade your skills in a timely manner, they are all necessary and useful. Learn to use them.

Level up runic attacks in a timely manner, prioritizing those you use regularly.

Don’t forget to shoot your bow. The shots have powerful poise-breaking, they are good for extending the combo.

Don’t forget to use runic attacks and rage.

Strong ax throw freezes small enemies, use it.

If you kick a frozen enemy at other enemies, he will give them frostbite. Useful at the beginning of the game.

If you know which attacks knock enemies back, use them in such a way that they bounce enemies into walls — this almost guarantees a stun.

Do not roll where you can make a short dash or parry.

If you are not going to go platinum, then you can not shoot down Odin’s ravens, but it’s better to do it at the beginning of the game in order to gain experience and upgrade the cheapest skills.

Elves are very vulnerable to status effects. They also freeze. Ivaldi’s anvil (dropped by the second troll) helps a lot.

It is better not to approach Tatzelwurms closely without first freezing them with an axe. They threw it, ran up, returned the ax, immediately tossed it. They are also extremely vulnerable to lightning.

The wolves are attacking faster than you might think. Place a block.

Thrown enemies can be thrown with a blade to slam them to the ground. Works with rune attack «Hyperion Capture» as well.

Learn to manipulate the camera and quick turn to play without target lock.

The best runic attacks . Everything is individual here. My favorites are: Fury of the Ice Troll, Bladestorm and Ivaldi’s Ax Anvil; Hephaestus Blast, Artemis’ Wrath, Hyperion Grab/Strike for blades.

The best rune call . Wolves, crows, squirrels (blue arrows are health stones, lightning arrows are rage stones). On NG+, the combination of the Squirrel and the Battle Cod Chest Set has some funny results.

Best handles . I already wrote above. But I’ll add a few more things to the ax: Tangiost’s Handle, Surtra’s Fiery Handle (as an alternative to the previous one, but it’s difficult to pump it to the end), Mistspawn (if you need more healing). Everything is sad with blades with handles. There are Cursed Flame Hilts and Fireburst Hilts, but they don’t increase Recovery and their primary benefit is too Luck dependent.

Best mascots . There’s a lot here. Amulet of Kvasir (Gives Worlds Shift), Talisman of Worlds (Gives ZA WARUDO and a lot of Recovery), Horn of Heimdall (essentially another rune attack, rolled back by parries). In between battles, you can wear the Talisman of Eternal Fury (to fill the scale of rage). For additional AOE, you can use Sinmara Ember and Ward of Endless Storms.

The Talisman of Endless Possibilities can get you through short fights if you’re not good at playing, but once you’ve turned in all the runes, it turns into a pumpkin. In addition, in the above build, it does not make much sense.

The best armor for Atreus . In my opinion, the robes of the shooter. Atreus’ primary function is ranged combat, so. On NG+, you can buy black armor, which contains the properties of all the others.

That’s it. Hope this helps at least someone.

God of War (2018) Walkthrough — Collectibles Guide

God of War (2018) contains 332 collectible locations. This guide includes all available collectibles in the game that will help you achieve 100% progress in all regions and get all the trophies.

  • 15 requests
  • 45 artifacts
  • 38 mystical gates
  • 16 shops
  • 39 Legendary Marks
  • 51 ravens of Odin
  • 8 Valkyries
  • 1 valkyrie queen
  • 3 dragons
  • 21 Norn chests (health/rage upgrades)
  • 34 legendary chests (runes)
  • 18 gaps between worlds (only 11 required for 100%)
  • 7 hidden halls
  • 11 Shrines of Jotnur (progress not tracked, but required for trophy)
  • 13 purple chest with tongue script (opens Muspelheim / Niflheim)
  • 12 treasure maps (in separate treasure guide)

None of the collectibles can be missed! You can collect them all after completing the story (which is recommended). Although you can start collecting items during the story. Then return to the desired locations after completing the story to collect the missing items. This guide is intended to be used AFTER the story. When you first visit the locations, you will not have the necessary skills to reach all the collectibles.

Some areas will not be accessible after completion, but be aware that they do not contain collectibles. All collectibles are only in places that you can return to. There is one small exception — the purple chest with the inscription of the language, located in the area (inside the Serpent) towards the end, which cannot be returned to. You won’t be able to return to it after the story, but luckily you only need 8 cipher chests for the trophy and 100% completion.
