Audio quality: It seems like it would go without saying, but we’re saying it anyway: You can’t always tell from a spec sheet how a headset will sound. A well-made stereo headset can sound better than a poorly made 7.1 Dolby Atmos surround sound set. Check reviews to get a sense of how a headset performs in real life.
Surround sound options: Modern headsets have gotten very good at recreating or simulating surround sound in headsets with systems like Dolby Atmos for Headphones or DTS:X. Der große Gaming-Headset-Ratgeber
Welches Gaming-Headset ist das richtige für mich?
Bevor wir Ihnen im Detail die beiden unterschiedlichen Headset-Typen vorstellen, möchten wir Ihnen zunächst einmal einige grundlegende Kauftipps geben. Fragen Sie sich, wie viel Ihnen ein guter Klang beim Spielen wirklich wert ist! Möglicherweise reicht Ihnen die Soundqualität eines Einsteiger-Headsets. In diesem Bereich werden Sie schon ab 20 Euro fündig! Ein High-End-Modell kann dagegen schon mal mit 300 Euro zu Buche schlagen.
Auch der Einsatzort spielt bei der Wahl des Headsets natürlich eine Rolle. Wenn Sie an einem PC spielen, der sich in Ihrer Nähe befindet (beispielsweise unter dem Schreibtisch), werden Sie mit einem kabelgebundenen Modell wahrscheinlich gut zurechtkommen.
Anders sieht es natürlich aus, wenn Sie hauptsächlich mit Ihrer Konsole, etwa einer PS4/PS5 oder einer Xbox, spielen möchten. Dann ist ein gutes Wireless-Headset viel praktischer und komfortabler. Sind Sie darüber hinaus ein ausgiebiger Nutzer von Teamspeak, sollten Sie auf ein hochwertiges Mikrofon achten, damit Sie immer klar und deutlich zu verstehen sind. Hierbei hilft ein Modell mit Geräuschunterdrückung, damit Ihre Mitspieler nur Sie und nicht auch noch die Geräusche in Ihrer Umgebung hören.
PC, Playstation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch: Welches Headset für welches System?
Denken Sie daran, dass nicht jedes Headset für alle Einsatzszenarios geeignet ist. So können Sie zum Beispiel einige Headsets nur in Verbindung mit einem PC nutzen, während andere sowohl mit dem Computer als auch mit Sonys Konsolen genutzt werden können. Die recht günstigen Logitech-Gaming-Headsets sind beispielsweise ausschließlich für den PC geeignet. Andere Modelle, zum Beispiel die Razer-Spiele-Headsets, funktionieren sowohl mit einem PC als auch mit einer PS4.
Auch für die Xbox-Konsolen und Nintendo Switch gibt es mittlerweile einige kompatible Headsets, auch in unseren Tests.
Gaming-Headset-Anschlüsse: USB, Klinke, Funk
Die Anschluss-Art ist ein wichtiger Faktor, den Sie bei Ihrer Kaufentscheidung berücksichtigen müssen. Für manche sind Wireless-Varianten reizvoller, andere wiederum bevorzugen kabelgebundene Gaming-Headsets. Falls Sie sich für eine Kabelvariante entscheiden, sollten Sie darauf achten, dass die Kabellängen meist zwischen 1 und 3 Metern betragen, abhängig vom jeweiligen Modell. Falls Sie den Kopfhörer an der Rückseite Ihres Computers anschließen möchten, empfiehlt sich in jedem Fall ein längeres Kabel. Kabelgebunden sind zwei Varianten bisher Standard: USB-A oder Klinke (3,5 mm). Hier sollten Sie ebenfalls darauf achten, wo Sie das Headset anschließen wollen. Playstation-Spieler beispielsweise schließen das Headset oft über die Klinken-Buchse am Controller an – hier sollte also ein passendes Headset gewählt werden.
Wenn es um Bewegungsfreiheit geht, hat ein Wireless-Bluetooth- oder ein Funk-Headset natürlich die Nase vorn. Damit kann es Ihnen definitiv nicht passieren, dass Sie zum Beispiel durch eine hektische Kopfbewegung das Kabel aus der Buchse reißen. Außerdem können Sie mit einem Wireless-Headset auch einfach kurz aufstehen, ohne die Kopfhörer absetzen zu müssen.
Für die Verbindung stecken Sie einfach den kleinen, mitgelieferten USB-Dongle in einen freien USB-Port und genießen die ultimative Bewegungsfreiheit. Eines sollten Sie allerdings bedenken: Erfahrungsgemäß sind kabellose Headsets teurer und schwerer als beispielsweise USB-Kopfhörer. Außerdem dürfen Sie nicht vergessen, dass in diesem Fall ein Akku zum Einsatz kommt, der stets geladen sein muss. Die Übertragung per Bluetooth und die damit verbundene Komprimierung der Sound-Dateien führt außerdem zu einem kleinen Qualitätsverlust gegenüber kabelgebundenen Kopfhörern.
Headset mit Raumklang oder Stereo-Headset?
Etliche Gaming-Headsets werben mit 3D-, 5.
1- oder 7.1-Surround-Sound. In den meisten Fällen handelt es sich um normale Stereo-Headsets, die Software verwenden, um den Klang zu verändern, um einen räumlichen Eindruck zu erzeugen. Es gibt verschiedene Techniken, aber im Prinzip arbeiten sie alle mit psychoakustischen Tricks – es gibt keinen „echten“ Surround-Sound. Unser Gehirn empfängt daher bewusst gefälschte oder verzögerte Klänge und erzeugt aus ihnen einen mehr oder minder überzeugenden Surround-Klang. Leider führen solche Tricks oft zu unerwünschten Nebeneffekten wie starkem Nachhall oder einer weiteren Betonung der ohnehin schon störenden Klangeigenschaften eines Headsets. Zum Glück kann die Surround-Simulation auch abgeschaltet werden.
Ein Vorteil eines solchen Modells kann die in jedem Headset integrierte USB-Soundkarte sein: In Einzelfällen liefert diese sogar einen besseren Sound als die Soundkarte im PC oder in der Konsole. Außerdem bieten die externen Lösungen noch zusätzliche Funktionen und Einstellmöglichkeiten für das Headset.
Diese können beispielsweise ein Equalizer, eine Beleuchtungsfunktion sowie Presets für die Surround-Simulation sein. USB-Gaming-Kopfhörer werden in vielen Fällen auch mit einer umfangreichen Kabelfernbedienung geliefert. Bei einigen Headsets kann die Soundkarte entfernt und das Gerät dann direkt an der Soundkarte über einen Klinkenstecker oder an einem Smartphone oder Tablet für den mobilen Einsatz betrieben werden. Wenn Sie also ein Headset kaufen, stellen Sie sicher, dass Sie wissen, wofür Sie es verwenden möchten – und ob Sie die USB-Soundkarte wirklich benötigen.
Es gibt allerdings auch herkömmliche Stereo-Headsets (also ohne Surround-Unterstützung), die eine eingebaute USB-Soundkarte besitzen. Auch in diesem Fall können Sie davon profitieren. Denn die USB-Variante liefert möglicherweise einen besseren Klang als die Onboard-Lösung auf Ihrem System. Ein Nachteil von minderwertigen USB-Soundkarten: Sie produzieren oftmals ein störendes Rauschen.
Klar im Vorteil sind PC-Besitzer mit einer dedizierten Soundkarte.
Denn direkt an diese angeschlossen klingt Ihr Gaming-Headset mit Sicherheit besser, als wenn Sie es per USB verbinden. Hierbei muss die USB-Soundkarte allerdings abnehmbar sein. Wenn Sie sich über solche Dinge keine Gedanken machen möchten, dann greifen Sie am besten zu einem klassischen Stereo-Kopfhörer, den Sie per Klinkenanschluss mit der Soundkarte Ihres PCs verbinden. Dabei liegt der Vorteil klar auf der Hand: Es gibt kein USB-Gerät, das sich negativ auf die Klangqualität auswirken kann. Falls Sie sich dennoch eine Surround-Simulation wünschen, verwenden Sie dafür einfach die Soundkarte in Ihrem System, sofern diese virtuellen Mehrkanal-Sound unterstützt. Sollte das nicht der Fall sein, hilft Ihnen die kostenlose Software Razer Surround.

Gaming-Headset-Bauweise: Offen oder geschlossen?
Wie sich Ihr Headset anfühlt und anhört, wird zum großen Teil von der Bauart bestimmt.
Ein großzügig dimensioniertes Headset mit hohem Gewicht passt meist besser, wenn auch die Ohrpolster üppig ausfallen und sich das Gewicht gut verteilen kann. Auch ein kleineres, leichtes Headset kann mit aufliegenden Polstern eine gute Sitzform bieten, übt aber oft unangenehmen Druck auf das Ohr aus.

Daher empfiehlt sich besonders bei langen Sessions ein Gaming-Headset im Over-Ear-Design. Da hierbei die Ohren komplett umschlossen werden, trägt sich diese Bauform besonders angenehm – übrigens erst recht als Brillenträger! Fairerweise muss man aber sagen, dass es auch bequeme Kopfhörer gibt, bei denen die Ohrpolster aufliegen. Bei dieser Bauart spricht man von On-Ear.
Ein möglichst perfekter Sitz ist nicht nur für den Tragekomfort wichtig, sondern auch für die Klangqualität. Schlecht sitzende Headsets bilden insbesondere Bässe nicht optimal ab, da die tiefen Frequenzen nach außen gelenkt werden anstatt in die Gehörgänge.
Auch der Mittenbereich leidet darunter.
Doch nicht nur die Passform hat Einfluss auf den Klang, sondern auch die Bauweise. Geschlossene Kopfhörer liefern in der Regel einen satteren Bass, während offene Kopfhörer in dieser Hinsicht etwas dünner aufgestellt sind und weniger Detailtreue bieten. Auf der anderen Seite warten offene Headsets mit einer besseren Raumabbildung auf, bei der das Klangbild viel offener und weitläufiger als bei geschlossenen Kopfhörern wirkt. Der Raumeindruck ist dadurch nicht nur glaubwürdiger, auch die Positionsbestimmung von Tönen funktioniert besser. Zudem bekommen die Ohren bei offenen Kopfhörern im Unterschied zu geschlossenen Systemen ein wenig Luft ab, was von vielen Menschen als angenehm empfunden wird – gerade bei langer Tragedauer.
Es gibt aber auch einen entscheidenden Nachteil bei offenen Designs: Sie sind nicht so gut (teilweise gar nicht) abgeschirmt wie geschlossene Varianten. Daher dringen verstärkt Klänge nach außen, aber auch nach innen.
Das bedeutet, dass sich Menschen in Ihrer direkten Umgebung von dem, was aus dem Headset schallt, gestört fühlen könnten. Auch der Träger selbst muss sich mit ungewollten Klängen herumschlagen. Nämlich mit Außengeräuschen, die das offene System leider durchlässt (dabei kann es sich zum Beispiel um Lüftergeräusche von Ihrem Computer handeln).
Allerdings: Die von uns vermeintlichen Vor- und Nachteile der unterschiedlichen Bauweisen sind nicht zwangsläufig als generell anzusehen. So gibt es auch offene Gaming-Headsets, die durchaus mit einem tiefen Bass aufwarten, und geschlossene Hörer, die ein weites Klangbild bieten. Daher ist es schwierig, eine konkrete Empfehlung für eine bestimmte Bauart auszusprechen. Vielmehr geht es darum, in welchem Szenario Sie das Headset einsetzen und welche persönlichen Anforderungen Sie haben. Falls möglich, hören Sie Probe!
Frequenzen bei Gaming-Headsets
Der Frequenzgang bezieht sich auf die verschiedenen Frequenzen, die Kopfhörer reproduzieren können, was letztendlich zu einem vollen Klang führt.
Was das bedeutet, lässt sich am besten anhand von Musik erklären: Bassgitarren und Basstrommeln leben von tiefen Frequenzen, während Becken oder Glocken die hohen Frequenzen brauchen. Eine Akustikgitarre oder auch die menschliche Stimme sind im mittleren Frequenzbereich angesiedelt. Gleiches gilt dann natürlich auch für alle möglichen Arten von Geräuschen, die Ihnen in Spielen begegnen. Angefangen von wuchtigen Explosionen über Schüsse bis hin zu Motorengeräusche und Sprachausgabe (um nur einige zu nennen). All das benötigt ein möglichst breites Frequenzspektrum.
Der Frequenzbereich des menschlichen Gehörs liegt bei 20 Hz bis maximal 20 kHz. Tatsächlich können aber die meisten Erwachsenen kaum über 17 kHz hinaus hören. Die meisten Headsets werben damit, dass sie über einen Frequenzbereich zwischen ebendiesen 20 Hz bis 20 kHz verfügen. Über die Klangqualität an sich sagt das freilich nichts aus, sondern lediglich dass die Hörer in der Lage sind, die Frequenzen abzubilden, die innerhalb des Wahrnehmungsbereiches des menschlichen Gehörs liegen.
Entsprechend sind Sie auch gut beraten, wenn Sie Kopfhörer meiden, die einen Frequenzgang von weniger als 20 Hz bis 20 kHz angeben.
Noise-Cancelling gegen Außengeräusche
Der Begriff Noise-Cancelling kommt aus dem Englischen und meint die aktive Rauschunterdrückung. Diese soll dafür sorgen soll, dass störende Geräusche von außen abgeschirmt werden. Diese Technologie ist in den letzten Jahren immer ausgefeilter geworden und funktioniert mittlerweile recht zuverlässig. Dabei kommt ein Mikrofon zum Einsatz, das aufnimmt, was um einen herum passiert, und dann eine Art Gegenversion dieses Geräusches abspielt, um es aufzuheben.
