Avengers roadmap: Marvel’s Avengers Roadmap Scrapped, No Release Dates

Marvel’s Avengers Roadmap Has Either Been Canceled, or Dramatically Changed

Crystal Dynamics has promised players a long-term roadmap of future content for Marvel’s Avengers, but it now appears the game is without a plan.

After months of reassurances to gamers, Crystal Dynamics appears to have abandoned any ‘roadmap’ for Marvel’s Avengers, or at least made radical changes to it.

According to a Reddit post on the PlayAvengers SubReddit, a developer with Crystal Dynamics revealed the so-called ‘roadmap’ for future updates to Marvel’s Avengers does not exist or has at least been altered substantially from what it had been. CD_NickE posted to a thread discussing Patchs 2.4 and 2.5 and commented that the team planned «smaller» updates that aren’t spread quite so thin. When questioned whether this meant the promised ‘roadmap’ no longer existed, CD_NickE replied, «I think that assumes that a roadmap’s existence is a more binary thing than it is. If your definition of ‘roadmap’ is a solid 6+ month plan we’re ready to share with players, then no that doesn’t exist, because we[‘d have] released it if it did.»

They continued, explaining the situation in greater detail. «If your definition is ‘the current plan of what devs will work on for the next x months’ then yes, that’s definitely existed, but that’s not really baked, especially for distant dates, at the level that we’re comfortable sharing it. That’s sort of what’s behind the updates we’ve done recently. If we limit ourselves to a shorter time horizon, more stuff on the internal plan reaches the level of certainty that we can talk about it in public.»

Now it appears that the promised Marvel’s Avengers roadmap consists of minor updates sprinkled through the year so fans have bite-sized new content consistently rather than waiting months between more significant updates. Although Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor was confirmed yesterday as part of Patch 2. 5, Marvel’s Avengers has suffered months without anything new to keep players invested. CD_NickE explained the game developers couldn’t think far in advance on updates, likening it to setting Thanksgiving dinner plans now. «I’m pretty sure I’ll celebrate it somewhere and that there will be a meal starring a Turkey. But whether I’ll be at my place or my family’s? What sides will get made? Will I bother to watch the football game? Those are things feel like they’d be guesswork this far out.»

Fans expressed ire at the loss of a roadmap and explained their feeling that Crystal Dynamics would need to do a lot now to increase morale among players still faithful to the game. CD_NickE agreed and admitted, «Yep, we set up some expectations that we’re now having to reset and I have to take the lumps for that.»

The last time a roadmap came up as a significant mention from Crystal Dynamics was in its February blog update for Marvel’s Avengers, in which it confirmed a few updates and the return of Nick Fury. Rumors have also persisted for months that She-Hulk would join Marvel’s Avengers, but speculation last month suggested she’d been pushed back until the premiere of her eponymous show and Jane Foster’s Might Thor would appear first. Since then, Crystal Dynamics has released little information about Marvel’s Avengers‘ future.

Marvel’s Avengers 2022 Roadmap Appears To Be Cancelled

Avenger’s! Assemble… at some point.

by Oisin Kuhnke

Unfortunately for Marvel’s Avengers fans, it looks like the next roadmap for the game promised earlier this year has been cancelled.

It seems that Marvel’s Avengers just isn’t capable of being problem free at any given moment. Marve’s Avengers fans have been expecting a big roadmap for the next wave of content since February. But that isn’t looking likely any more.

As reported by Forbes, a post on the Marvel’s Avengers subreddit from a developer on the game essentially confirmed the team didn’t have a detailed roadmap covering what’s coming next. “If your definition of ‘roadmap’ is a solid 6+ month plan we’re ready to share with players, then no that doesn’t exist,” wrote developer CD_NickE.

The developer went on to explain that Crystal Dynamics does have a general outline over what it wants to do with the game over “x” months. But the studio isn’t ready to share all of that yet. However, Reddit user WildSinatra pointed out how a proper roadmap was definitely meant to be coming.

what about february’s development update?

While the February development update page does not seem to be currently viewable, WildSinatra did highlight a line from it. “We know many of you have been eagerly awaiting our next formal roadmap for Marvel’s Avengers. We aren’t yet ready to reveal the next full roadmap…” The specific phrasing of “full roadmap” is what led people to assume that there is one coming.

CD_NickE did go on to say that the team did set up some expectations that they’re “now having to reset.” It definitely isn’t the end of the world that Crystal Dynamic doesn’t have a full roadmap in place. As we do know that Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor is on the way. But miscommunication has been a major issue for Marvel’s Avengers throughout its life. So hopefully this isn’t the final nail in the coffin for some players.

No More Marvel’s Avengers Future Roadmaps

Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that there will be no more Marvel’s Avengers roadmaps. While the roadmap was originally released in February, a Crystal Dynamics employee confirmed that the studio will be focusing on smaller updates going forward.

Why are there no more Marvel’s Avengers roadmaps?

Prior to the announcement of Jane Foster’s debut in Marvel’s Avengers earlier this week, things were pretty quiet for a live action superhero game. The Avengers roadmap was released back in February, following the one released in March 2021, but now it doesn’t seem to be happening. Responding to a fan query on Reddit, Crystal Dynamics employee Nick Edwards called the roadmaps «rough» and said they were «long [and] difficult to put together.» Edwards says that instead of roadmaps, he and his team prefer to focus on smaller updates, such as those released in February and earlier this week. According to Edwards, these updates «[feel] better» because they are easier to create and can be shared with the community more often.

Edwards goes on to say that there is no roadmap in the conventional sense (i.e., «a solid plan for 6+ months» as he describes it), but the developers have an idea of what content will be worked on next. He says the team just doesn’t want to share this content until they realize they can stick to certain timelines. Edwards says describing the upcoming content update in February as both an «official roadmap» and a «complete roadmap» creates expectations that the team cannot meet, and he accepts responsibility for that.

To be fair, the fan reaction to this revelation has not been positive. Many fans point to the fact that a full roadmap was clearly planned at some point; in a fan question in February, Edwards said the roadmap will be «published when it’s ready.» In light of this, some Avengers players are now saying that Edwards is trying to claim that there will never be a roadmap, even though there clearly was. Others have blamed Crystal Dynamics for poor communication given that this seems to be quite important information that was only shared in a Reddit comment and not in an official capacity.

What does this mean for the Avengers?

The optimistic outlook is that the team will indeed move to a shorter update schedule, as Edwards says, and that this is meant to temper fan expectations and only show content when it’s ready. Cynically, however, one could say that this is very similar to Crystal Dynamics phasing out support for Avengers, as it looks like high-profile upcoming projects like Perfect Dark (which Crystal Dynamics is currently co-development) and Tomb Raider.

Marvel’s Avengers are not yet dead and not dying. However, the game’s release and subsequent update schedule was something of a mess, leaving many (not least ourselves) wondering if the game would last another year or not. Decisions like this don’t exactly help with this kind of speculation; while a shorter and more frequent update schedule certainly sounds like a good idea, it could also be a way for Crystal Dynamics to stop fans waiting for roadmaps and content updates, which doesn’t look good for the Avengers. We will tell you more about it as soon as we get it.

Four months before the start of the year, the «Avengers Roadmap to Early 2022» is nowhere to be found

Since Marvel’s Avengers was officially unveiled at E3 2019, there have been countless jokes about it, and the game’s history has been ever since with live service turned into a roller coaster of ups and downs. From a less-than-stellar reveal to a lukewarm launch and post-launch dripping content, Marvel’s Avengers was a textbook example of how not to handle a live action game.

Despite some positive trends from last year with the release of the Wakanda War expansion, the addition of Spider-Man (on PlayStation consoles) and some much-needed gear changes, the future of Marvel’s Avengers looks bleaker and bleaker every day. . . While Crystal Dynamics is still working on the game, as far as everyone knows, no one knows exactly what they’re working on other than expensive skins taken from the MCU movies.

Where is the Marvel’s Avengers roadmap?

Marvel’s Avengers latest roadmap details the War for Wakanda expansion, the game’s first raid, and the addition of Spider-Man to PS4 and PS5. It was released last summer and Crystal Dynamics has promised to provide the community with more information «in early 2022». It’s a blurry window, and it’s understandable if anything goes beyond its original date due to the current state of the world, but as of April, the Marvel’s Avengers community is losing hope they’ll ever see this roadmap.

Marvel’s Avengers didn’t have many updates this year. In the latest patch, the game adaptation has been redesigned to make it easier for new players to dive into the game with new missions led by Nick Fury. This update also caused a major crash issue on PS5 (after a boot delay), continuing the «one step forward, two steps back» trend for the game. This is the biggest drop in content the game has seen this year, and given that most Avengers players are diehard fans of the final builds, it hasn’t been as well received by the community at large.

What the game needs is more heroes, more missions, more content, and more areas: the type of content you expect to see in a roadmap. However, without an Avengers roadmap, it’s getting harder and harder to believe that leaked heroes like She-Hulk, The Winter Soldier, and War Machine will ever be added to the game’s roster. Crystal Dynamics remains silent on this matter, and this is perhaps the worst insult of all.

Future of the Avengers

If you ask most people about the state of Marvel’s Avengers, you will get extremely negative answers. Most people didn’t think the game would even get this far, and the further the game creeps, the more likely it is to be on its last legs. With so many online service options (and the best Marvel games on the horizon), that’s a bad sign.

The lack of a roadmap is not a problem. The problem is the lack of communication. If Crystal Dynamics had contacted their dwindling player base about development issues and schedule changes, things wouldn’t be as bad. However, the fact that the studio is silent gives the impression that the developers are just as unsure about the future of the game as the players.

As a die-hard fan of Marvel’s Avengers myself, it’s frustrating to see how the game doesn’t live up to its potential with every update. The game cannot be saved; he shows promise with some content like the Discordant Sound raid and the Scientist Supreme villain sector. But due to the lack of regular and meaningful content updates, it’s hard for me to motivate myself to jump and beat the AIM robots for the thousandth time (even if Spider-Man is in the game).

Being a fan of this game hurts so much and I invite my friends to play only to get silence or rejection and my love for the game gets less and less. Will this game survive until 2023? Will there be even more updates in 2022, for that matter? Playing with a live service requires an investment from players, and Marvel’s Avengers seems like a riskier bet every day.

What does the Avengers need to succeed?

If you ask 100 people what Marvel’s Avengers needs to change, you’ll get 100 different answers. IP Avengers is one of the biggest in the world, and trying to appeal to this wide audience will inevitably lead you to turn your back on at least part of that fan base. Some want more solo content, some want more heroes, some want PVP, some want open world locations, and so on.

The point is, will more content save The Avengers? Will other heroes be able to solve the main problems of this game? Instead of focusing on making a great Avengers game, Crystal Dynamics should focus on making a great Marauder first. All problems of the game are fundamental. The loot is not rewarded, the mission structure is uninteresting, and there is simply no build variety in the endgame.

The main combat system is interesting, but the secondary systems need work. Crystal Dynamics has been working on this for the past year, but updates need to come out faster to change the reputation of this game. Worry about Marvel heroes and nonsense later. Work on the core systems now. Those still playing will appreciate them, and then new players can be drawn in with exciting Marvel additions when the game is really good.

As one of the last fans of Marvel’s Avengers, it pains me to write more than a thousand words berating the game. The prospect of a live Marvel game that evolves like the MCU excites me to no end, it’s just not the way to do it. There are countless examples to follow. Crystal Dynamics just needs to pick a direction and pick up the pace. This is a game worth keeping. It would be a shame if he went down in history.
