HEART OF GAMING Award

Game Industry Solidarity Campaigns for Ukraine

Every year, the gamescom award ceremony is organized by the Digital Gaming Culture Foundation as part of gamescom. The gaming award honors the best new games presented at gamescom.

Winners of 2021

The gamescom award selects the event’s highlights in 20 categories overall, divided into the groups Genre, Platform, Consumer Awards and gamescom global Awards. Game producers can apply for one or more categories from the Genre and Platform groups and automatically enter in the selected categories of the Consumer Awards and gamescom global Awards.

«Genre» Group

The award categories in the «Genre» group are based on the video game genres to which the submitted games belong. The gaming platform doesn’t matter when it comes to categorizing. The gamescom award jury is responsible for nominating as well as awarding of the winners.

Some award categories are based on the platform the games were developed for: Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC and Sony PlayStation. The gamescom award jury is responsible for nominating as well as awarding of the winners.

The Consumer Awards allow the gamescom community to vote for their favorites in two categories. Direct submissions are not possible.

gamescom global Awards focuses on exhibitors at gamescom 2022 who have attracted attention with a special game lineup, who are committed to diversity, or who have made special efforts to ensure a sustainable trade fair presence. As a special prize the jury additionally awards the <3 of GAMING AWARD.

Procedure and Deadlines

  • From 11.07.2022 to 27.07.2022, game developers can submit their games for the different categories of the gamescom award.

  • The jury will nominate three favorites in each category. The evaluation is based on a points system.

  • The nominees will be announced on 15.08.2022 in a press release and here on the gamescom award page.

  • The winners of the category groups Genre, Platform and gamescom global Awards will be selected by the jury. The audience will vote for the winners of the Consumer Awards.

  • The winners will be announced at the gamescom: Opening Night Live on 23.08.2022 and until the end of gamescom in the gamescom studio.

The Jury

The games submitted for the gamescom award will be assessed by an independent and internationally staffed jury of around 30 experts from the gaming industry.

Among others, the jury includes representatives of German and international media and social media companies, industry representatives, representatives of gaming communities, testers from the German Entertainment Software Self-Regulation Body (USK), and journalists.

Assessment Criteria

The jury will assess the submitted games based on gameplays following 7 fixed criteria. Each assessment criterion will be assigned with a score on a scale from 1 to 10. The criteria will be used for both the nomination and the selection of the winners.

  • Graphics: The jury will evaluate the graphic style, the atmosphere of the game world, the character design, and the game’s color scheme in terms of aesthetics.

  • Gameplay: Game mechanics are crucial for the gaming experience and will therefore be closely scrutinized. Creativity, sophisticated controls, and appropriate difficulty levels will positively affect the rating.

  • Entertainment: When it comes to assessing the quality of games, it’s obviously very important that gamers get their money’s worth. Among other things, the jury will look at the fun factor, the richness in variety, and how long the game entertains the players.

  • Sales prospects: Is this game already hyped, has it been recommended, or are there other reasons to expect a big success in sales? In this case, the jury can award points in this category.

Gamescom 2022 is upon us, and has already offered up a handful of tantalizing reveals and announcements.

Having kicked off with an opening showcase on August 23, Gamescom 2022 will consist of a mix of digital and in-person events taking place over five days. The physical part of the show is taking place in Cologne, Germany while an extensive digital program will be streamed online, allowing those around the world to tune in.

With the likes of Xbox, SEGA, Warner Bros. and more exhibiting at the convention, it’s definitely not one to miss – even if you can’t attend in person. Gamescom Opening Night Live, the convention’s opening showcase was stuffed with big announcements, reveals, and world premieres for upcoming games. Dead Island 2 was officially unveiled at last, Sonic Frontiers got a release date, Hogwarts Legacy received a somewhat strange trailer, and the release of Gotham Knights was even brought forward. We expect only more announcements to be made as the convention carries on.

Want to know more? Read on for everything we know about Gamescom 2022 so far, including when and where it’s happening and which exhibitors have been confirmed as attending.

  • What is it? The world’s largest gaming event
  • Where is it? Cologne, Germany but streamed online globally
  • When is it? August 24 to August 28, 2022
  • Who is attending? Xbox, Ubisoft, SEGA, 2K, Warner Bros and Bandai Namco are among the big names

What is Gamescom?

Gamescom is the world’s largest video game event (in terms of attendee numbers), and it takes place annually (usually in August). In 2019, the show saw 373,000 visitors, with hundreds of exhibitors showcasing their latest gaming, esports, and tech projects.

Gamescom takes place in Cologne, Germany, with gaming fans flocking from all over the globe to try new games before their release. That involves engaging with community activities, like cosplay contests and esports competitions. It’s also a meeting point for the games industry’s retail, trade, and media representatives.

Usually, the industry’s most prominent publishers are involved, and we often see a lot of gaming news revealed during the show. That could be new game reveals, release date announcements, or trailer drops.

When and where is Gamescom 2022?

Every year, Gamescom takes place at the Koelnmesse exhibition center in Cologne, Germany. However, Gamescom 2021 had no physical presence due to the coronavirus pandemic and took place entirely online.

This year, though, Gamescom is back in all its glory, with Gamescom 2022 taking place both digitally and in-person on-site in Cologne across five days, from August 24 to August 28, 2022. The developer conference, Devcom, precedes Gamescom from August 22 to August 23.

Gamescom 2022 schedule: at a glance

As we’ve mentioned above, the core days of Gamescom 2022 take place between August 24 and August 28, but certain elements of Gamescom (including Opening Night Live and Devcom) take place before these dates.

Below, you’ll find the dates for all elements of Gamescom 2022, with more information on what events are taking place below that.

  • August 22 — August 23: Devcom
  • August 23: Opening Night Live (more on this below)
  • August 24: Gamescom Entertainment Area (open for trade and media)
  • August 25 — August 28: Gamescom Entertainment Area (public)
  • August 24 — August 26: Gamescom Business Area
  • August 25: Gamescom Congress
  • August 25 — August 28: Gamescom Event Arena
  • August 26 — August 28: Gamescom City Festival

These elements include a handful of events within them. Devcom, for example, consists of a series of events focused on game development, publishing and networking, while the Gamescom Business Area is for professionals only and focuses on industry networking. Gamescom Congress is a conference covering a broad range of topics on the potential of games in society and the economy

The Entertainment Area, meanwhile, is where attendees will be able to play an array of new games, while the Entertainment Event Arena will be occupied by the likes of AMD, Funcom and ESL Gaming, who will be hosting events throughout Gamescom 2022.

In addition to the main floor events, the Future Games Show will be returning for a special Gamescom edition, with roughly 50 games from publishers including Team17 and 505 Games set to make an appearance at GamesRadar’s showcase. The Future Games Show takes place on August 24 at 11am PDT / 2pm EDT / 7pm BST / 8pm CEST (or August 25 at 4am AEST).

There are a couple of other live streams on the cards too. The Awesome Indies Show is to take place at a currently unconfirmed date and time and the Xbox Live Booth stream kicks off on August 25 at 2pm CEST / 8am EST / 5am PST / 1pm BST / 10pm AEST. Those who tune into Xbox’s live show can expect «developer interviews and gameplay from various Xbox Game Studios». For more on what we’re expecting from Xbox at Gamescom, scroll down.

But that’s not all that’s on offer this year. For the metalheads among you, there will be a free Metal Hellsinger Concert, featuring the likes of Trivium’s Hatt Heafy and Arch Enemy’s Alissa White-Glüz, taking place on August 25 at 7pm CEST / 6pm BST / 1pm EDT / 10am PDT (or August 26 at 3am AEST).

What is Opening Night Live?

Gamescom has its own gaming news conference called Opening Night Live, which officially kicks off the event.

This year’s showcase took place on August 23 and served up a whole bunch of world premieres and announcements. It lasted for over two hours and featured over 30 games.

Hogwarts Legacy was one of the stars of the show and received a weird new trailer. A big free update for Age of Empires 4 was announced, and The Callisto Protocol got a fittingly gruesome trailer. A release date for Sonic Frontiers was announced, before the show rounded off with an official unveiling of the long-anticipated Dead Island 2.

Attendees and predictions

Plenty of publishers and developers have confirmed (or denied) their attendance for Gamescom 2022, giving us a good idea of who we will hear from and what they might be bringing to the show.

Microsoft has already confirmed (via IGN ) that it’ll be in attendance. As far as what it’ll be bringing to the show, Microsoft said in a press release, “We’re excited to confirm that Xbox will be back on the show floor at Gamescom 2022 in Cologne, Germany. Fans in Europe and around the world can expect updates on some announced games coming to Xbox in the next 12 months.”

We got a pretty good selection of games at the Xbox and Bethesda showcase in June, including highly-anticipated titles like Redfall, Forza Motorsport and Starfield. But it doesn’t look like any of those titles will be appearing at Gamescom, with Xbox since revealing its lineup to include Pentiment, Age of Empires 4, Microsoft Flight Sim and Grounded.

Ubisoft is another big name that’s confirmed it’ll be attending Gamescom, though it’s yet to reveal exactly what it plans to show. Interestingly, Ubisoft has also committed to a dedicated Ubisoft Forward showcase in September which isn’t all that long after Gamescom. With Skull and Bones now back out in the world we wouldn’t be shocked to see that make an appearance but the rest of Ubisoft’s lineup is hard to guess. A little more clarity around Assassin’s Creed Infinity would be welcome.

Warner Bros, Sega, 505 Games, Koch Media, 2K Games and Bandai Namco are among the other big names that are confirmed to be attending Gamescom 2022.

In fact, the event organizer has confirmed that over 500 companies have registered to take part in this year’s show, with this number including developers, publishers and those who have signed up to be part of the merchandising area. Check out the full list, below:

With over 500 companies registered so far, #gamescom2022 is shaping up to be AMAZING! We can’t wait to be back in person. You can find our press release here: https://t.co/9f4D0ov2hA See you in Cologne! #aheadofthegame pic.twitter.com/dgyfrFSEEvJuly 7, 2022

As far as no shows, there are some big names in this area too. Sony and Nintendo have both confirmed that they will not be in attendance. Activision Blizzard, EA and Take-Two Interactive have confirmed that they won’t be there either.

What happened at Gamescom 2021?

Gamescom 2021 Opening Night Live did a great job introducing us to a slew of new trailers for some of the most anticipated games coming soon, also packing surprise announcements we’re looking forward to. Host Geoff Keighley put a big emphasis on «holiday» releases, and he wasn’t wrong. We received release dates for games coming out around the November/December time period, as well as a slew of titles slated for early 2022.

Opening Night Live gave us a CG reveal trailer for the Saints Row reboot, a new gameplay trailer for Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and DokeV, a preview trailer for Death Stranding: Director’s Cut, a demo for Call of Duty: Vanguard, a release date for Halo Infinite, and it announced Marvel Midnight Suns.

The Xbox/Bethesda showcase was a bit less exciting, devoid of any updates on anticipated titles like Elder Scrolls 6, and Fable. While the Xbox showcase had its thunder largely stolen by Opening Night Live, it still had its highlights, including Dying Light 2 footage, deep dive on a rather peculiar Age of Empires 4 mode, and gameplay footage for Forza Horizon 5.

Other highlights from Gamescom 2021’s conferences included a world premiere trailer for Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate — Daemonhunters, world-exclusive gameplay for Life is Strange: True Colors, and the debut of Jurassic World Aftermath Part 2 for Oculus Quest 2.

Gamescom 2022 — or why I will continue to attend such exhibitions — Life at DTF

5416
views

I read a post nearby about the negative experience of attending Gamescom and thought it would be fair to write an alternative opinion. This is not the first time I visit both Gamescom and E3 and I can say that I am delighted with events of this kind. The Gamescom experience very much depends on how you prepare for it, so below I will describe what I love Gamescom for and give tips on how to spend it in a way that does not leave you disappointed. nine0003

  1. Choose the right day to visit

Gamescom usually runs from Wednesday to Sunday. Where Wednesday is the day for the press and industry workers, and Thursday is Sunday for everyone else. It should be understood that the busiest days of the exhibition are Friday — Saturday, when schoolchildren and students do not study, and older people can come from another city on the weekend without taking a vacation. Therefore, plan your visit on Thursday, and even better on Wednesday. Getting to the exhibition on Wednesday is not so difficult, below I will describe how to do it. nine0003

2. Get in as a press, content creator, or industry worker

All in all, it’s easier than it sounds. If you work in a field that is somehow remotely related to development, marketing, event organization or any other indirectly related to game development, feel free to register as a Trade Visitor. If you have a YouTube channel, Tik Tok account, website or other gaming resource, sign up as a press or content creator. This will allow you to get to the exhibition on Wednesday, when there are practically no people there and you can visit the stands in the most comfortable way. This year, Gamescom clearly experienced a shortage of such visitors and approved applications even from students studying programming. I’ve heard stories of people building websites in a hurry, stuffing content in a couple of days, and getting press status. Press statuses, by the way, were even hand-sold on online platforms, but I do not recommend using this. nine0003

3. Use a Wild card

Even if you are not in the gamedev industry and do not create content, it is possible to get to the exhibition on the press day by purchasing a Wild card. A wild card is a ticket that allows regular visitors to pass a day for the press and industry. This year, they could be bought in the official Gamescom store when buying a bundle with branded merch, won in a quiz on the site, and closer to the exhibition, in general, simply bought in a regular store along with tickets for other days. nine0003

Both the status of the press/industry and the presence of a wild card allow you to get to the exhibition on the first day when the halls look like this:

Half empty room on Wednesday

There are practically no people

4. Use Fast lane passes

Even if you are in the middle of the busiest Friday or Saturday, you can still use fast lane passes to certain booths without queuing. This year, each ticket was accompanied by 3 fast passes, which allowed you to register and get to the booth at the appointed time. Thus, I played, for example, Saints Row without a queue, just coming to my time slot. Registration and skip-the-line access are available for everyone with the purchase of any ticket. nine0003

Fast lane pass example for Saints Row

5. Choose the right time to visit

Whatever day you visit the exhibition, come to the opening. Thus, you can get to the stands of interest until the halls are filled with a crowd. In the first hour of opening, stands look like this:

6. Follow game events outside the exhibition

For me, the exhibition itself is 50% of the activities. The second half begins outside the walls of the exhibition center, in the late afternoon. During Gamescom, companies such as Bethesda, Ubisoft, Square Enix and many more host meetups and parties for fans every day. They are absolutely free, they usually always give out merchandise, and food and alcohol are not limited. Every day of the exhibition I had a choice of 3-4 events that I could go to. For example, the developers of Dying Light 2 held a fan meeting in one of the bars, where there were developers answering questions from fans, a quiz with cool prizes was held, and each visitor was presented with this set:

More examples, Xboh this year had a party at their booth after the close of the show, Amazon gaming held an amateur tournament for all comers, the winners of which won a trip to San Diego with all expenses paid, Asus rented an entire hangar and threw a party with di- jay and live show on stage.

Chat with Dying Light 2 Devs at

Fan Event

I also recommend visiting Opening Night Live live, hosted by Jeff Keely (host of The Game Award and many other gaming events). Of course, you can watch the broadcast on Youtube, but it’s always cool to watch shows and premieres on the big screen live. nine0003

7. Take part in activities and competitions at stands

You can take part in competitions or various activities at almost any stand. Under me, people won collector’s editions of games, keyboards and other peripherals, just nice merch in the form of T-shirts, etc. Often the conditions for participation are very simple. For example, at the Western Digital booth, you could take a photo at their booth, upload it to any social network and choose any prize you like.

During 2-3 days of the exhibition, half of my suitcase was full. nine0003

8. Chat with other show attendees

Gamescom Visitors is a fairly large community on reddit and discord where people exchange tips and life hacks, share their gaming experiences and are always ready to help. Every year I find new acquaintances and friends in it, with whom it is pleasant to meet later at the exhibition itself or at a party after.

9. Communicate with the developers

Almost every booth (especially in the indie area) hosts the developers of the games on display. This is a great opportunity to chat with them and openly ask a question about the game, share feedback and learn something new. For example, this is how I talked to the developer of Lies of P, who gave advice on leveling up the character and the most optimal balance of skill development. nine0003

10. Visit all halls

Gamescom is not only halls with booths. This is, in fact, a whole festival of games with a bunch of different zones.

Indie Arena — an area where small companies present their games and demos

Cosplay Arena — an area where you can stick to cosplayers

Merchandise area — a huge area for those who want to buy merch based on their favorite game.

There are also good discounts. For example, in this photo there is a huge box with a bunch of Amiibo for 3 euros

Retro Area — a hall where all possible retro consoles and slot machines are presented, where you can play freely. There is even such an exotic

And many other halls — a pavilion with individual countries presenting their games, a family area with games for children, a business area, etc.

If you follow all the tips above, visiting Gamescom will leave only positive impressions.

In conclusion, a few more photos from the exhibition.

Thank you all, if you suddenly missed something, I’m ready to answer any questions in the comments. nine0003

Gamescom 2022 what was shown, game announcements, trailers, broadcast participants

The last major presentation of the summer.

On the evening of August 23, one of the largest presentations of the summer, Gamescom Opening Night Live, took place in Cologne. It was hosted by the unshakable Jeff Keely, host of The Game Awards and Summer Game Fest. Not without top games!

Here’s a list of confirmed projects that we knew about beforehand:

  • Display of a game related to Borderlands (most likely Tales from the Borderlands 2)
  • Announcement of a new sci-fi game from the creators of Subnautica
  • The Callisto Protocol
  • Dying Light 2 Stay Human: Bloody Ties
  • The Expanse: A Telltale Games Series
  • Genshin Impact
  • Goat Simulator 3
  • Gotham Knights
  • High On Life
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Honkai: Star Rail
  • Lies of P
  • Outlast Trials
  • Return to Monkey Island
  • Sonic Frontiers

It doesn’t end there. We have collected for you all the most interesting from the presentation.

* * *

Everywhere is a project led by Leslie Benzies (former Rockstar Games Key Producer). The game will be cinematic, the details will be shared in the near future.

The creators of The Longest Journey have introduced a new game called Dune Awakening. Openworld MMO got a page on Steam.

They showed a new gameplay of The Callisto Protocol, in which they changed gravity and surprised with a rather dynamic action for a horror. New from the creator of Dead Space will be released on December 2. nine0003

The continuation/restart of Lords of the Fallen RPG was announced. Here is the game page on Steam.

Avalanche Software has released a new Hogwarts Legacy trailer! Crucio will release on February 10, 2023. And the expected game is offered to be pre-ordered from August 25th.

There will be a sequel to Tales from the Borderlands! And the name was chosen not boring: New Tales from the Borderlands! Release — 21 October.

The first DLC for Dying Light 2 will focus on combat arenas. Skillfully kill enemies will be allowed on October 13th. nine0003

Gameplay of the hotly anticipated Sonic Frontiers revealed! The novelty will be released on November 8th.

The French Parallel Studio showed a beautiful trailer for the upcoming game: Under the Waves. The project, by the way, is under the wing of Quantic Dream.

The Goat Simulator series continues to capture the minds of gamers, and Goat Simulator 3 is out November 17th.

Quests will live forever, Return to Monkey Island will not let you lie. Ron Gilbert’s Project Coming Soon — 19September.

The creators of Subnautica, along with writer Brandon Sanderson, presented Moonbreaker. A turn-based strategy game set in Sanderson’s new sci-fi universe. The authors admit that they want to cross the gameplay of XCOM with the world of Guardians of the Galaxy. The game will be released in Early Access on September 29th.

Extremely stylish action-RPG Lies of P has got gameplay — this release is not to be missed! Moreover, the story is inspired by the fairy tale about Pinocchio. And the game will also appear at the start in the Game Pass library. nine0003

Survival Stranded: Alien Dawn is not so simple: you need to manage a squad of explorers on a completely unfamiliar planet. In October, the project will appear in early access.

Deck13 announced the action game Atlas Fallen — a game with stunning visuals! Whether it is interesting to play it — we will find out only in 2023.

If you are a fan of space simulators and are bored, it’s time to let your emotions out! Less than a year is left before the release of Homeworld 3. nine0003

HoYoverse has released Genshin Impact Update 3.0.

The studio behind Genshin Impact has also released a trailer for the upcoming Honkai Star Rail. No release date yet.

Of course, there were talking guns in video games, but obviously not on such a scale. Justin Roiland’s project will appear on December 13th. Can you save this year?

The creators of Friday the 13th are ready to surprise: their new game Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game is based on the funny horror of the 80s «Killer Clowns from Outer Space».

Fallout 76 Development Lead and Fallout 4 Lead Producer Jeff Gardiner recently founded his own studio, and just recently unveiled Wyrdsong! Openworld RPG is also being made by other cool guys — are we waiting for a competitor to Starfield and Avowed?

Gotham Knights has been in the making for a very long time — the action is bound to conquer this boring autumn, which will cost almost no blockbusters. The trailer is awesome, and it won’t be long before WB Games Montreal comes out even a little earlier than planned: October 21st. nine0003

Who missed the Chinese flavor — catch the trailer of the action-RPG Where Winds Meet. The project looks very worthy, write it down in the wishlist.

Hideo Kojima is such a genius that he presented his podcast at a gaming expo. The Spotify exclusive will start rolling out in September, with the first release on the 8th. For the podcast, Hideo will invite people from different areas of entertainment, not just the gaming industry.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide co-op game of the year launches November 30th. We wait! nine0003

It’s rare to find a game based on Slavic mythology. In Blacktail, we will follow the path of the young Baba Yaga — it sounds interesting, but you can try it already in the coming winter.

The Outlast series is back on your monitors! Horror The Outlast Trials can also be played with friends. If you want to get into the closed beta test: it will run from October 28 to November 1.

Dead Island 2 went through a very long development period. It seems that everything will end soon — and on February 3, 2023, we will find out what kind of zombie action Dambuster Studios has released. Get the cinematic. nine0003

And the first gameplay trailer, where they relied on fun and colorful zombie killings. There will be six playable heroes in the game!
