Telltale Games Needs to Return to Westeros

By
Max Borman

Telltale Games took a trip to Westeros with Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series, but the second season was canceled and needs to come back.

After shutting its doors in 2018, that era of Telltale Games had come to a close and the time of large IP-based episodic games had seemingly ended. However, that did not last long since Telltale Games was quickly relaunched under LCG Entertainment. Now, the studio is hard at work on the long-awaited The Wolf Among Us 2 and an episodic series based on The Expanse alongside the Life is Strange developer. While these titles are a ways off, it seems like it could be a return to form for Telltale and usher in a new wave of IP-based episodic adventures.

Many projects that were in the works at Telltale Games were canceled when the studio closed down, if not beforehand. While The Wolf Among Us 2 was revived, there has been little news on whether the studio will be able to finish its Stranger Things title. Perhaps one of the biggest blows was the cancellation of the second season of Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series. The first season was received decently by fans and many wanted to see the adventures of House Forrester continue, but it seems there are currently no plans for a second season. With the release of House of the Dragon on the horizon, now would be the perfect time for the studio to get the license back (as it no longer owns it) and return to Westeros.

Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series Held Promise

Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series released in 2014 and told a story alongside Game of Thrones. It followed the northern house of House Forrester during the events of season three leading up to the end of season four. The house never made an appearance in the show, but was based on a brief mention in the fifth A Song of Ice and Fire novel, A Dance with Dragons. Players took control of five members of the house through six different chapters that forced players to make decisions that would affect the future of the house.

Alongside the members of House Forrester, many characters from Game of Thrones made an appearance voiced by their on-screen actors. Characters like Jon Snow, Cersei Lannister, Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, and even Ramsay Snow/Bolton would show up throughout the series. These characters would serve as connections to the show and would be antagonistic or helpful to the members of House Forrester. With the addition of these characters, the game felt like watching another season of the show.

Overall, the game’s story had promise and the reception was decent enough to warrant an improved sequel. The choices that the player had to make could lead to drastic consequences and would leave the player stressing over if they made the correct choice. It was also considered very faithful to the source material and a good addition to Game of Thrones lore.

Before the closure of Telltale Games, there was a second season planned. The second season went into development in 2015, shortly after the release of the final chapter of season one. However, due to behind-the-scenes issues, the season was put on hold in 2017. In 2018, the studio ended up closing down and there has been no indication that the second season will ever see the light of day, while the first season has since been delisted from digital platforms.

Telltale Games Needs to Make a Second Season

While Telltale Games is still on shaky ground and trying to deliver The Wolf Among Us 2, a return to Westeros is a must for the studio at some point. The way that it tells stories is the perfect fit for Westeros and many fans are eagerly awaiting more adventures around House Forrester. Since its release, Game of Thrones aired its final season which proved very controversial and Westeros went on a brief hiatus. However, it is coming back in full force with the new prequel series House of the Dragon, which makes it a perfect time for the gaming industry to return to the universe too.

First, Telltale Games needs to deliver the projects that are currently in the pipeline and get Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series back on storefronts. After it accomplishes that, it should really consider returning to the fantasy land and delivering another high-stakes Game of Thrones story. There is a severe lack of Westeros-based video games, and Telltale came the closest to capturing the feeling of the show. A second Westeros outing from Telltale Games would surely repeat that success and give fantasy fans something to check out.

Game of Thrones Board Game Rules 2nd edition

Get all the ingredients ready for the game.

The preparatory stage consists in laying out the inventory in its positions. The cards are shuffled and stacked, according to the numbers on the shirt, in separate piles. Those present occupy the chosen houses and lay out chips and other things (troops, supply and influence tokens). nine0016

The course of the game is divided into 3 phases:

Westeros phase

The top card is drawn from each Westeros deck, and the instruction written on it is carried out, for example, gathering or supplying troops, struggle for power. Open cards come into effect in numerical order (I, II and III). Tasks can be different, incl. unpleasant — wildling attacks, etc.

In the Westeros phase, players must do the following:

  1. Move the round marker forward one space.
  2. nine0050 Reveal the top card of each of the three Westeros decks.

  3. Move threat marker. Count the total number of wildling symbols on the three revealed Westeros cards (if any). Move the threat marker on the wildling track as many spaces to the right as you have counted. If the marker is on space 12, a wildling invasion occurs immediately (see page 26). Ignore the signs of the wildlings, which should have moved the marker beyond the last space.
  4. nine0050 Play revealed Westeros cards in deck number order (starting with I). Just read the text of the card and its effect will take effect.

Plans Phase

Order tokens (defense, march, raid, increase power, help) are placed here, preferably in secret from neighbors. All players act simultaneously, experienced participants at this stage determine the strategy: establish alliances, decide whether to trust their allies or whether it will be more profitable to attack them.

All players place orders on the board at the same time. Order tokens are placed face down in each space containing at least one House unit.

During the Scheme phase, the players must do the following:

Assignments

At this stage, each player must issue exactly one order (place the token on the board face down, with the House crest up) for each subject area that contains at least one House unit ( foot warrior, knight, ship or siege tower). All players give orders at the same time. A region cannot receive more than one order. nine0016

Announcement

All issued orders are revealed at the same time, that is, their tokens are turned upside down. House forces will carry out these orders in the action phase.

Sending a raven.

The owner of the Messenger Raven can do one of the following. Unexpected move: place your unused order on the field instead of one of your orders. Scouting Beyond the Wall: Look at the top card of the Wildling deck and return it to the top or bottom of the deck. Information can be shared with opponents, but you cannot show them the map. The owner of the raven may refuse to use it. When using Messenger Raven, its owner flips the token over to the dull side. At the end of the action phase, the token is flipped back bright side up: in the next round it can be used again. At the end of this phase, the conception phase is over. Move on to the action phase. nine0016

Action Phase

Direct battles based on previously formed orders. The player with the advantage in the army wins the round, forcing the opponent to retreat.

Players now follow orders given in the Scheme phase. It is this phase that accounts for the lion’s share of all activity in the Game of Thrones. Here players execute:

Raids

In turn order, players execute one Raid Order each. If the player has no such orders left, he skips his turn until the end of the stage. nine0016

March

In turn order, each player executes one March order. If the player has no such orders left, he skips his turn until the end of the step. If the player has no such orders left, he skips his turn until the end of the stage.

Reset

All support and defense orders left on the field are deleted. The Valyrian Sword and Messenger Raven tokens are flipped bright side up. The fugitive pieces are returned to the vertical position. nine0016

The Game of Thrones ends under one of two circumstances:

  1. The 10th round of power play ends
  2. Houses turn out to be the seventh land with a castle or fortress

At the end of the 10th round of the game, the winner is the House that owns the most land with castles or strongholds. In the event of a tie, the bidder with the most fortresses wins. If the dispute is not resolved, the bidder with the best supply wins. Another draw? Victory then goes to the challenger with the most power available. If there is still no winner, it will be the contender whose House is higher on the Iron Throne track. If a House advances to the seventh space of the victory track (that is, captures the seventh land with a castle or stronghold), the game immediately ends with that House winning. nine0016

The project provides for a number of bonuses. When entering the Iron Throne, Estates and Royal Court sections, the competitors will receive special tokens (Iron Throne, Lowers, Royal Court), which provide a number of advantages over rivals.

Goal of the board game Game of Thrones 2nd edition
