The single-player story is arranged in chapters, which players complete in order to progress through the story. The game is played from a third-person perspective in which scavenging for supplies and learning when to fight or run are key factors in surviving the dangers of the game.Such dangers include: bear traps, barbed wire traps, bombs, and spike traps; ‘The Haunted’, the game’s most common enemy; ‘Reborn Laura’, a multi limbed, long haired, crawling creature; Ruvik, the game’s main antagonist; ‘The Keeper’, a large humanoid with a safe as a head who wields a large meat tenderizer hammer; and ‘Sadist’, a large humanoid wearing a spiked metal mask on his face, wielding a chainsaw covered in blood.
Sebastian Castellanos, the protagonist, needs to make use of the environment and things he may find in order to survive. The game world can transform during scripted events and as a result of player actions, altering locations and creating new paths or teleporting the player to new areas.
Castellanos must use medical items to restore health; some of these items cause temporary hallucinogenic effects. By collecting vials of ‘Green Gel’ hidden throughout the game, players can upgrade Castellanos’ abilities; more ammunition, extra stamina, and additional health are some of the upgrades.
Players have a safe house called ‘Safe Haven’ that can be accessed during scripted events and by finding mirrors. The safe house is a mental hospital and has several accessible areas such as a save point, an upgrade room (where the player may upgrade Sebastian’s skills), and the safe room where keys are used to open storage safes which contain useful items such as green gel and ammunition. These keys are collected by finding and breaking ‘Madonna’ statues hidden throughout the game’s levels. There is a nurse called Tatiana who greets Sebastian when he teleports to the safe house.
The player has access to various weapons such as a revolver, shotgun, sniper rifle, knife, grenades, and the ‘Agony Crossbow’, a projectile weapon that fires bolts capable of freezing, blinding, electrocuting, or exploding enemies.
Ammunition for weapons is very scarce, but mechanical components can be harvested to craft additional bolts. One source of components, bombs, are traps that react to the player’s proximity or movement. Bombs can be stuck to walls or the floor, in chests, and in vending machines. The bombs can be disarmed via a minigame.Melee combat is designed only to create distance between the player and enemies, although the player can instantly kill some unaware enemies after sneaking behind them. Enemies that are downed or incapacitated are capable of reviving; to avoid this, players may set fire to the downed enemy using a limited supply of matches to permanently defeat them.Certain items in the environment, such as bottles, can be thrown to stun or distract enemies.
There are seven different types of collectables in The Evil Within: ‘Personal Documents’; Sebastian’s personal log, detailing his life as a detective and his life with his wife and daughter. ‘Documents’; the personal logs of other characters.
‘Map Fragments’; pieces of the game’s map; once collected, they are stored at the safe house. ‘Newspapers’; newspapers detailing events concerning or involving Sebastian. ‘Missing Persons Posters’; posters of characters Sebastian encounters throughout the game who have been reported missing. ‘Audio Tapes’; tapes containing a recording that can be played which are recorded by characters through the game. Collectables can be found in levels themselves or in the safe house.
The player unlocks several bonuses for completing the game. Extra weapons, character models and bios, ‘AKUMU’ difficulty (the game’s hardest difficulty level), and New Game are some of the unlocks.

We will go to the end, we will fight in France, we will fight on the seas and oceans, we will fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we will defend our island, whatever the cost, we will fight on the beaches, we we will fight on the coasts, we will fight in the fields and in the streets, we will fight in the hills; we will never surrender, and even if it happens, which I do not for a moment believe, that this island or most of it will be enslaved and starved, then our Empire across the sea, armed and guarded by the British fleet, will continue battle until, in the time blessed by God, the New World, with all its strength and power, sets off to save and liberate the Old.
These words were spoken by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the House of Commons on June 4, 1940.
France was defeated, Belgium was occupied, Holland capitulated, Austria became part of the Reich, Czechoslovakia was annexed, Norway was controlled by the German Reichskommissariat, Poland was divided between Hitler and Stalin. Evil reigned everywhere. The Europe of Hitler, Mussolini and Franco was fascist, Molotov shook hands with Ribbentrop, tanks with Soviet gasoline went to Germany, and Stalin smiled contentedly through his mustache over the secret protocols to the Soviet-German treaty. Britain was alone in a sea of horror, hopelessness and nightmare — one against Hitler, one against fascism. And she wasn’t about to give up.

It’s time to talk about Britain standing alone against fascism for a whole year, and about America putting all its industrial strength and the lives of Texas and Vermont guys into the fight against evil — the time has come, because the anti-Western propaganda hysteria in our country has reached the highest degree and captured many brains and souls.
The propagandists on the payroll accuse the West of badly helping the USSR, acting in the wrong way, doing the wrong thing. They are trying to belittle our allies by claiming that the equipment they supplied to the Red Army was rubbish and Lend-Lease did nothing. They speak dismissively of the war between the British and Americans in Europe, Asia and Africa: «We would have won without them!»
This is a lie. Standing over the shoulder of a hungry, soaked through Red Army soldier, they spit into his can of American stew, which he eats in the trench: “Just think, stew!” None of those who fought spoke badly about stew, or about the American Studebakers, or about the Dodge three-quarters, which carried 76-mm guns without fail, or about the Airacobra fighters, on which the aces of the Red Army flew the armies of Pokryshkin and Rechkalov.
Thoughtlessness and madness overwhelm the brain. Tied with black and yellow ribbons, they consider themselves heirs of the Victory, but do not understand that each generation has its own and special battle with evil.
Those of whom we are proud have won their battle. Our evil is with us. It is today. It is different.
“We can do it again!” — Cars with such stickers rush through our streets, and they are driven by those who do not know what they are talking about. Repeat what? Famine in Leningrad? Unburied soldiers in the Tver swamps? Four attacks on Rzhev, in the streams around which the water was red from the blood soaking the ground? To repeat the burnt villages, from which the skeletons of furnaces remained, children with faces transparent from hunger, refugees in summer shoes leaving Minsk and walking all the way to Ufa? In all this drumming, the jubilation of the flags, the puffing out of the cheeks, the exaltation of ourselves, the horror of war disappears.
They brag about their victims, brag about spilled blood, reproach others for shedding less, brag about feats they didn’t do, dress up children in military uniforms, and build a funny Reichstag to play with what cannot be played.
This is not memory, this is vulgarity.
If a woman in a prosecutor’s tunic with an icon of Nicholas II becomes the head of the column of the Immortal Regiment, then this means a break in causal relationships and deep, severe, clinical ignorance. And she is not the only one who has broken logical connections and lacks elementary knowledge about what happened.
The war was going on all over the world, that’s why it is called world war. The war was going on in vast expanses of the globe, in the fields near Moscow and in the jungles of Burma, in the sky over the English Channel and in the vastness of the Atlantic, in the sands of Libya and in the snows of Norway. Everyone who fired at the Nazis at least once in this war, everyone who spent at least one day in a trench (and was killed on the second) or at least once climbed into the cockpit of a bomber flying to bomb the enemy, made his unique, invaluable, human contribution. in victory. It was all brought in by Russians, Belarusians, Ukrainians and a hundred other peoples of the USSR, which I cannot list here, the British, Americans, Warsaw ghetto rebels, Poles from the Home Army and Anders’ army, Czech saboteurs Gabchik and Kubish, who blew up Heydrich, French historian Mark Blok, who participated in the Resistance and was shot by the Gestapo, is an unthinkable list of millions of names and surnames, many of which remained on gravestones, and many did not survive, disappeared in the darkness of time.
From there, from the other side, observing our life with mute eyes, they are waiting not for quarrels with allies, not for spitting in a can of American stew, not for cynical propaganda, when the victims and torments of war become a stand for power, but for understanding, knowledge, forgetting, respect .
We must know that there was not only the defense of Moscow, but also the defense of London, not only the feat of Soviet teenagers who stood up to the machines, but also the feat of American women who stood at the conveyors, not only Stalingrad, but also El Alamein, not only Kursk Bulge, but also Montecassino, where the Americans, British, Poles, New Zealanders, Indians fought.
And we must know that our grandfathers did not fight alone. Together with the Belarusian partisans, although separated from them by hundreds of kilometers, the legendary Nepalese Gurkhas fought, known for their fearlessness and the fact that they never retreat. And together with Pokryshkin and Kozhedub, who flew in the skies of Kursk and Kuban, fought the Argentine volunteer pilot Kenneth Charney, who flew over Malta during the huge battle for the island that took two years.
Almost no one here knows about this battle. We know about the northern convoys, but we do not know about the Maltese ones, one of which was carrying the American tanker Ohio with gasoline. It was set on fire from the air, a downed Yu-87 bomber exploded right on its deck. But the crew did not leave the burning ship, and the escort destroyers did not leave it. They brought the tanker to Malta.
Kenneth Charney shot down 17 German aircraft. In the USSR, he would have been awarded the title of hero for this.

Great idea of Novaya Gazeta: to make a special issue dedicated to the contribution of the Western allies to the Victory over Nazism. I wholeheartedly approve and support. However, I cannot fail to note one black birthmark of the Soviet liberals: they continue to call German National Socialism «fascism» with persistence worthy of better use and put Franco on a par with Mussolini and Hitler.
But we’ll get through this somehow. In any case, the idea itself is great. Especially in modern times.
