Detroit: Become Human Experience — Alice & Todd

All I wanted was a life like other girls. Maybe I did something wrong? Maybe I wasn’t good enough? That’s why he was always so angry.

Alice Williams is a main character in Detroit: Become Human. Living with her father Todd Williams and dealing with his violent mood swings, Alice is cared for by the android named Kara. Events may bring both of them together in a deep bond and lead them on a quest for freedom and safety.

Biography

Alice ia a 9 year-old little girl. Kara is assigned to look after her. She suffers from her father’s abuse since her mother left home.

Appearence

Alice ia a little girl with brown eyes and brown hair, which she wears tied in a low ponytail or bun. She wears several outfits throughout the game.

Personality

From the beginning, Alice seems to be a really quiet, meek and sullen little girl that can be seen playing with her toy Timothy, which she has a great attachment to, visibly affected by Todd’s abuse. She also seems to be fairly sensitive towards Todd and others. It is revealed Alice has a fear to Todd for breaking Kara, and feels overwhelmingly sad whenever Kara is seemingly killed, leading to traumas regarding broken home. She copes with her sadness by reading.

Although she is obedient to Kara, she shows insufficient regards to some laws, including not urging Kara to turn in despite committing a murder. She still shows resentment on some immoral decisions, such as stealing.

Curiosities

Alice is portrayed by Audrey Boustani, who provided her likeness, the voice acting and performance capture. Boustani did this for all the dialogue/acting scenes, while three other girls aged 8-10 did the motion capture for the body animations.

In the concept art, Alice was originally conceptualized as black.

Quotes

He’s coming! He’s gonna hurt me! Run! Get away or he’s gonna break you like last time! Alice to Kara as Todd is on his way to her room.

I’m tired… I have to sleep… I love you mom…

You stay there! Don’t you dare fucking move, or I’ll bust you worse than last time.

Todd Williams is a human in Detroit: Become Human. He is the father of Alice Williams and the owner of Kara, who he assigns to look after his home and daughter.

Kamski is a very private person and has disappeared from the public eye after he resigned as CEO a few years prior to the beginning of the game in 2038.

Biography

Todd was a former taxi driver who lost his job when self-driving cars became popular in 2021. He then became a laborer, then a bouncer and security guard, only for androids to replace human labor in each of these fields too. For several years he had been working odd jobs, including dealing Red Ice, a powerful stimulant, as part of a small drug trade around the neighborhood to pay for his own addiction. He was arrested several times for drug trafficking and also for violent misdemeanors.

Todd had a wife. Unhappy with his behavior and addictions, his wife left. Todd claims she entered into a relationship with an accountant.

Dwelling on his memories and his hatred for androids, who he blames for his sad predicament, Todd is abusive towards both Alice and Kara. He destroyed Kara multiple times before the start of the game, who was repaired and sent back reset with a memory wipe.

Appearence

Todd is a white middle-aged man who has brown hair that reaches to his neck with blue eyes, a stocky build

In The Opening, Todd is seen to be wearing a dark olive jacket. The regular out is a maroon top with a dark green cardigan over it, dark denim jeans with black shoes.

Personality

He seems to be extremely hot-headed and resorts to violence when it is «needed» (due to his wife leaving and his addiction to Red Ice) and says to Kara that he will «bust her worse than last time» if she moves. As a Red Ice addict, he is prone to frequently inhale Red Ice for comfort. He also shows obsessiveness and hostility on whoever gets in his way.

Todd is highly emotionally unstable and tends to have extreme flashes of rage over the smallest perceived slights. He loses control frequently, contributing to multiple destructions of Kara before the story begins. Todd tends to believe that he can tell what other people are thinking just by looking at them. He shows signs of having a persecution complex and believes that his misfortunes in life are caused by people intentionally screwing him over. For example, he believes that his wife left him for an accountant without a word, when in fact she had told Todd at least once before their divorce that his anger was scary and that he needs to stop abusing drugs. Todd constantly deflects blame to others for his own mistakes and shameful feelings.

Todd’s extreme mood swings can result in him going from mercilessly beating his daughter in a blind-rage, to then sobbing on her shoulder and repeating to himself that loves her just seconds later.

Todd is possibly combating depression and has been taking an antidepressant called Zolpidem Tartrate (seen on the bottle label), the warnings on this medicine read «Contains Tianeptine» and «Risk of behavioral disorders».

Curiosities

Todd is one of three confirmed named Red Ice users, the others being Carlos Ortiz and Leo Manfred.

Todd also uses sleeping pills.

Todd is going through financial troubles based on bills lying in his room. He has failed to pay utilities and owing money to Harman Bank.

Quotes

Alice, Honey… Alice… Look… Look, Daddy’s wounded. Be a good little girl… Come… Come… Come help, Daddy…Todd to Alice after being wounded while fighting Kara.

What are you looking at…? (.) What’s your fuckin’ problem? (..) Not the life you dreamed of eh? (..) Maybe you think this is easy? (..) Maybe you think, It’s my fault we live in this fuckin’ shithole! My fault you fuckin’ mother took off! (. ) You should stop takin’ drugs, Todd. Sometimes you really scare me, Todd. How to save Markus in Detroit: Become Human’s Broken chapter

Keep the android Markus alive by making the right choice in the Broken chapter of Detroit: Become Human.

Detroit: Become Human’s Todd is quickly established as a nasty piece of work. Considering the subject matter, it’s no surprise that many players will want to put an end to him and stop anyone else suffering in future. While the optimal outcome will keep everyone alive, you can also choose to follow a more deadly path and still achieve a positive outcome. In this article we’ll teach you how to kill Todd and rescue Alice in Detroit: Become Human’s Stormy Night chapter.

Detroit: Become Human is all about how decisions and discoveries can influence later chapters, and on that front we’ll need to head back to Chapter 3: A New Home to open up the options we need in Chapter 6: Stormy Night.

Chapter 3: A New Home

During this chapter you’ll be completing house chores for Todd and Alice, and while most of your actions are entirely inconsequential, there are a couple of things you’ll want to do. For starters, it’s worth speaking to Alice at both opportunities to earn the Warm or Trusted status as this will open up some future branches. Crucially, when you’re cleaning the upper floor of the house you need to explore Todd’s room fully. Your goal is to tidy up everything in the room including the pills left by his bed. Doing this will allow you to find the gun he’s got stashed in the table drawer beside the bed. Once you’ve spotted the gun you’ll have opened up a new option down the line. From here you can continue the chapter as you please.

Chapter 6: Stormy Night

Stormy Night gives Kara her first chance to fight back against her programming and work to save Alice from Todd. At the beginning of the chapter you’ll need to behave as normal, serving dinner to the two of them. The pair will soon argue, with Alice running up stairs as a result.

Todd will order you to stay where you are before walking into the living room, and it’s now that you can choose to break the Mind Palace and free yourself. Complete the minigame to let you move and make a dash for the stairs as soon as Todd is in the living room. Upstairs, head directly into Todd’s room and grab the gun from the drawer next to his bed.

With the gun secured head down the hallway to Alice’s room. Todd will likely have beaten you there so make your way inside quickly. You’ll get a cutscene here in which Todd will knock the gun from your hand and start a fight. Yep, you guessed it, it’s another quicktime event. Beat the button prompts and you’ll survive the fight, resulting in Kara shooting Todd.

Pick up Alice and run downstairs to the front door. Head outside and look for the bus stop down the sidewalk to the left. Hop on the bus that pulls up and the chapter will end.
With that pathway secured, why not consider another route you might have missed? Here’s our guide on how to rescue Alice from Todd without killing him.

90,000 More human than people. Detroit: Become Human

What makes a person human? The question may be strange, but here it is the key one. Well, so what? A set of chromosomes? The structure of the brain? The ability to put a set of incoherent sounds into meaningful speech? From a scientific point of view, all this would be quite a comprehensive answer, but we want to dig deeper. If we perceive a person as something more than flesh and blood, then the main sign of his humanity (butter oil) will be the ability to compassion. That is empathy. And now I propose to remember this thought, because it was she who became the leitmotif Detroit: Become Human , the latest brainchild of the French company behind the Quantic Dream .

So, if you want to reflect on the fact that not every person has the right to such a proud title, then this neo-noir was definitely created for you. Let me remind you that Quantic Dream, led by David Cage (David Cage) has already given us such whether game or movie masterpieces as Beyond: Two Souls and Heavy Rain. Intentionally giving you a choice, because it would be blasphemy to attribute these games to one thing. Well, our today’s «heroine» was undoubtedly created to surpass her predecessors. Did it work? We’ll decide a little later. nine0007

It’s not surprising that I openly call the games movie masterpieces: two of the three listed featured real actors. And the genre of video games to which Detroit: Become Human belongs is called interactive cinema. For those who are not in the subject, I decipher: the main difference of this genre is that the gameplay itself is minimized. Such a choice is made in favor of a detailed study of the plot and the disclosure of the nature of the characters. The player, in turn, gets the opportunity to influence the course of the plot, and absolutely any of his actions can lead to an unexpected ending. nine0007

Now imagine that each episode of such an interactive movie was shot in a dozen different variations and outcomes. All scenes and their dramaturgy are recreated by a standard film crew. Only now, instead of scenery and makeup, there is a chroma key and a suit with sensors all over the body and face. This technology is called motion capture. And now that the brief educational program is over, I propose to move on to the plot of the game.

The developers’ imagination paints us the realities of 2038 as follows: the arms race and other unpleasant political things have transformed and taken on new dimensions. Now the heads of Russia and the United States, the two strongest powers (the definition is taken from the game), are striving for superiority in the creation of androids. The machines of the American monopoly company Cyberlife are absolutely identical to people, they are in almost every family and in every production. Now androids are tasked with doing daily chores around the house, cleaning the streets, repairing equipment, and serving customers in stores. Naturally, there are androids for security, medical care, child rearing, and sex work. And if some people treat their advanced gadgets like they treat pets, then the majority either subtly mocks them or blames them for total unemployment

In general, androids from Quantic Dream are quite logical and rational creatures. Unlike such imperfect people. Our imperfection seems to justify the fact that from time to time we reject some indisputable truths, such as caring for those who are weaker. And if we add to this permissiveness and impunity, then some turn into real maniacs. So it happened with androids — if they don’t answer, then you can put out cigarettes about them and splash out your racism, for example. But one day something breaks in the program of the machine and it becomes scary. It’s scary to die. Or lose someone. This is how an android becomes a deviant. nine0007

I don’t want to tell you the plot of the game at all. Such an approach would be meaningless, especially given the main goal of our little discussion. But we definitely need to talk a little about the main characters. There are three of them in Detroit: Kara, Connor and Marcus. Not without cliches, of course, but the roles of all three evoke emotions — this is at least.

Let’s start with Kara. Her owner, Todd, is a very unpleasant man who drinks after his wife leaves and hates androids for losing his job. In general, Todd has a job, if you can call the drug trade that way. He also has a daughter, Alice, for whom Cara was needed to look after. nine0007

Sometimes the unfortunate father himself accepts his goods and then takes out the insult for the injustice of the world on his daughter or android — here who will come to hand first. Once, during such family squabbles (or rather, beatings), Kara was afraid for the life of the child, which led to a failure in the program. The android became a deviant, fought back Todd and fled with Alice in an unknown direction. So we get the first line of relations between man and machine, which can be conditionally called maternal.

Some similarities in the development of deviation can be traced in Marcus — he also faces unjustified aggression against him. Initially, the android serves as a butler in the house of the rich and eminent artist Karl Manfred. The latter, by the way, feels sympathy for robots and believes that nothing human is alien to them. He perceives Marcus not as a servant, but as a son, and teaches him to look at the world with a lively look.

In general, Karl has a real son, but he is heavily addicted to drugs and creates problems for his father. The result of another scandal is that Marcus is incapacitated and thrown into the trash, where he is destined to be reborn and embark on the path of a fighter for the rights of deviants. This is the second line of relations in the game — the deviant and society. nine0007

Last but not least is the android detective Connor. He is the latest and most advanced development of CyberLife, created in order to stop the spread of deviation. Connor is partnered with a local detective who actually hates androids. Whether Connor becomes a deviant is up to the player to decide. In the case of a positive choice, the last line of relations between a person and an android opens up to us — friendly, and in some ways even paternal. nine0007

And so we smoothly approached the main problem of the game. In fact, there is no choice in Detroit: Become Human. And no, the point here is not the gameplay — it is more than diverse, but the fact that the developers indicate to us in advance with the plot, direction and setting who is bad and who is good. Almost all the heroes of the game perform seemingly ambiguous actions, but for some reason this is permissible for some, while others have no right to even the slightest justification. By the way, the plot develops in such a way that after a while you realize that in fact this story is not at all about people and androids. The main narrative in Detroit is the birth of a social revolution: the deviants can be replaced by any oppressed minority, and the narrative will not lose a shred of sense from this. Only here in real life there is no absolute, but the game is stubbornly deprived of halftones. The plot takes on a completely absurd character when we are actually offered to justify the murders. Although it is completely incomprehensible what deserved the death of a man who just happened to be at hand at the enraged car. And is it even possible to deserve this …

But if we really try and close our eyes to the always-right-androids and always-wrong-humans, then we will discover the most important advantage of the game, which makes its passage so attractive. Detroit: Become Human is not so much about how a machine becomes a person, but about the awareness of one’s own humanity. For me, the phrase «become human» is not addressed to androids, but to us — people. And even if the plot is implemented crookedly, and in some places it is not at all new, the opportunity to think about your intolerance for any manifestations of feelings by other creatures will always be in place. True, it turns out to be ironic: for centuries humanity has been moving towards establishing its own “I” as the highest value, in order to eventually fight with its exorbitantly inflated ego with all its might? nine0007

Who voiced the game Detroit: Become Human in Russian?

Detroit: Become Human, 2018

Interactive cinema, action-adventure

Publisher: USA

About the game . Global problems on Earth are getting worse: the earth’s population reaches the mark of 10 billion people, resources are depleted, which is about to start a war between Russia and the United States for their remnants in the Arctic. The game takes place in the city of Detroit. There are three playable characters in the game: Kara, Markus and Connor.

Kara is an AX-400 household android who, due to his master Todd’s cruelty, becomes a deviant. Marcus becomes the leader of «Jericho» — the base of the local resistance. Connor is the prototype of the CyberLife company, whose goal is to fight «deviants», but as the game progresses, he himself can become one of them. Deviants are androids who have experienced a software glitch that causes them to experience emotions and develop their own will, just like a human. nine0007

To accurately convey this atmosphere and guarantee players complete immersion, the game was localized into Russian.
One of the important aspects of localization is the voice acting of the characters. The character’s voice is as important as his image and appearance.
In order for the characters to naturally speak Russian, localization studios involve professional announcers and dubbing actors in dubbing.
Select those who fit the type of voiced hero. In the KupiGolos studio, you can order an announcer to voice not only games, but also cartoons, TV shows and any other content. But back to the game. nine0007
