The first Destiny had a very mediocre story that had nothing to offer but nightmarishly written dialogue, but Bungie made up for it by filling the game’s universe with mysteries and interesting characters . Players learned about many of them on the site, bit by bit collecting details of what they did and what certain characters are famous for. Among them was Osiris, a warlock who was expelled from the City and founded his own cult. This is almost all that is known about him, and therefore the fans were delighted with the announcement of the Curse of Osiris add-on. Total disappointment

We see Osiris only in the introductory video, after which he disappears, and we go in search of him. Helping us in this is the ghost of Osiris named Sagira (who turns out to be many times better than an ordinary ghost, if only because he does not constantly try to joke) and brother Vance, one of the followers of the cult of the mysterious warlock. And if in the first Destiny Vance was a silent guy who said something only when players bought a ticket to competitive PvP from him, then in the sequel he looks more like a hysterical fan who comes into an unhealthy delight at any mention of a superstar. nine0003

That’s the whole new planet

Most of the missions take place on Mercury, the new planet in Destiny 2. But Bungie wouldn’t be Bungie if it didn’t add a couple of goofy story missions to the old locations. First, players will be sent to one of the places on the EDZ where they have already completed the adventure, and then they will completely repeat one of the raids, replacing only the opponents and the boss. Destiny expansions have long used these tricks (once Bungie offered to play an old mission backwards, passing it off as a new one), but there has never been such a brazen self-copying. nine0003

Half of the campaign takes place in the «Endless Forest» — a location that the developers constantly mentioned in press releases. It might seem to many that this is some kind of separate mode that you want to go through again and again. In fact, “a planet-sized predictor program that simultaneously simulates trillions of realities,” as Osiris describes it, turned out to be one of the most boring entertainments in the history of the series. The player enters the portal, runs down a long empty corridor, and then ends up on one of the platforms and shoots at the enemies. Once they are killed (although you don’t have to kill them all), you can open the door and get to the next platform. This repeats about eight times, after which you exit the Infinite Forest and never want to go back there again. nine0003

The reason for the appearance of such a location is easy to explain — Bungie stubbornly does not want to invent new opponents, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to look for reasons to push the foreheads of the old ones. And a simulation program in which anything can happen is a great excuse to once again force the player to fight the hive, the fallen, the cabals and the Vex. The only problem is that the «Endless Forest» itself is no different from other locations with opponents walking around them. This is a primitive shooting of enemies without any puzzles, gameplay mechanics and interesting innovations. It causes yawns at the first time, tires at the end of the campaign and makes you howl with anguish during the passage of adventures — all three take place there. nine0003

The beauty of the environment in Destiny has never been a problem

Although something interesting begins to happen only at the end of the «story», but it’s too late — the player at this moment does not hope for the continuation of the story, but wholeheartedly longs for its speedy completion. The new enemies are (again!) slightly redesigned old enemies that have almost no new abilities, and the main boss is animated in the same way as Oryx from The Taken King. As a result, the campaign does not represent anything interesting: some Osiris disappeared somewhere, for some reason we are looking for him, for some reason his fate should worry us … The story told here will seem insultingly bad to those who expected to know more about this character, and will not cause any emotions at all in everyone else. However, when the ghost says in all seriousness the phrase “I never thought that the endless forest was so huge”, you can laugh heartily at the quality of the dialogues. nine0003

The new planet is similar in size to the 6vs6 PvP map from the first Destiny — it is several times smaller than EDZ and other locations, and there is simply nothing to do on it. From time to time, a single public event is launched, where players need to bring the balls to the portals and close them, then fly to the neighboring islands and do the same there, and in the finale defeat the huge boss. It takes too long, and the trophies for dubious entertainment are just as mediocre and stupid — instantly depreciating «blue» things and tokens to raise the reputation with Vance, whose rewards are also so-so. In addition, he offers to earn new weapons by collecting materials in public events, strikes and PvP, but this is far from being as fun as it seems. nine0003

In search of content

In addition to the campaign and the planet, Curse of Osiris offers a couple of strikes (which actually turned out to be reworked story missions), multiplayer maps and a raid lair — a mode for six players. This is not a new full-fledged raid, but a small add-on to an existing one. It turned out to be very short, but it looks much more spectacular than a regular raid and offers much more interesting mechanics, especially in the boss fight. There is no longer a feeling that Bungie wanted to save money, as the environment is very high quality and looks great. But why it was impossible to pay as much attention to everything else is a mystery. nine0003

But the developers did not forget about everyone’s favorite microtransactions and trophy boxes, adding more than a hundred items to the in-game store. Some can be purchased with the currency you get from loot boxes, but this is just a drop in the ocean of available cosmetic trinkets. There are the most beautiful ghosts, and cool ships, and a couple of dozen emotions — none of this will fall out just like that, for the passage of some modes. We used to brag about a fancy ship given out for defeating Oryx in a difficult version of the raid from The Taken King, but now we “farm” experience and hope that the desired item will drop from the so-called bright engram. Moreover, these loot boxes once again pushed a bunch of rubbish like a pack of shaders and modifications, so you won’t be able to quickly get what you need. nine0003

And one could close one’s eyes to this, if there was something to do in Curse of Osiris. Since weapons now drop with fixed properties, finding the desired assault rifle or pistol is not difficult. With armor, the situation is exactly the same. In a raid lair, as in a regular raid, something good rarely falls out. Many exotic items have returned from the first Destiny and are being sold for money already in the third round. In general, it remains to play only for the sake of «cosmetics», but at the same time the feeling of achievement is completely gone — there is no feeling that you have earned this or that ship or worked hard to get a ghost. You’re just lucky it fell out. Or you are unlucky, and you are sadly “farming” until the next expansion, for some reason trying to get it. nine0003

Separately, it is worth mentioning that with the release of Curse of Osiris, owners of the usual Destiny 2 lost access to several modes. They can’t launch a raid, complete a Nightfall, or participate in the Trials of the Nine PvP mode — and after all, some achievements and trophies are related to this content (they are now being fixed little by little)! Platformers willingly returned money to buyers, and Bungie once again pretended that this was just a mistake. In fact, there are probably no mistakes — the developers seem to be testing the players for strength and trying to figure out how to make more money with less effort.
