Does Dark Souls: Remastered Come With DLC?

Dark Souls: Remastered is a repackaged edition of the original Dark Souls that was released in 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, and comes with improved visuals, a few quality-of-life changes, and an expanded multiplayer service. Dark Souls: Remastered comes with all DLC (The Artorias Of The Abyss DLC, which was released in 2012). But how do you access the DLC? Find out right here.

How To Access

Dark Souls: Remastered’s DLC

You’ll need to start the Dark Souls DLC before completing the game, as doing so will immediately push you into New Game +. Unlike with most other games, however, accessing the Artorias Of The Abyss DLC can be somewhat complicated. Before you can start anything, you’re going to need to head to Darkroot Basin and defeat the Hydra monster. Be careful when doing so, as you can easily fall into the water, and either bait its head slams or use ranged attacks to defeat the enemy.

Once defeated, head back to Darkroot Basin (You must either warp or quit and reload the game) and, hugging the left-hand cliffside, follow the lake until you spot a golden crystal golem. Defeat it, and an NPC known as Dusk Of Oolacile will appear in its place. Speak with Dusk, and then she will leave.

After that, fast-travel to the first bonfire at Duke’s Archives and take the elevator up. When you emerge into a new room, you’ll be at the entrance to the Duke’s Archives. In the room will be several crystal enemies and a large crystal golem. Defeat the smaller enemies and then defeat the golem, who will drop the Broken Pendant (Only available after freeing Dusk Of Oolacile).

With the Broken Pendant, head back to Darkroot Basin where you fought the golden golem, and in its place will be a portal. Examine it to trigger a cutscene and warp you to the first location of the Artorias Of The Abyss DLC; Sanctuary Garden.

What Does The DLC Include?

The DLC for Dark Souls includes an assortment of new items, including rings, as well as new armour and over ten new weapons, including catalysts. There are also several new powerful dark magic-based spells and four new NPCs that can be found, some of which act as merchants and sell a majority of the new items available with the DLC pack.

How Long Is The

Dark Souls DLC?

The Dark Souls DLC is much more linear than the main game, and it is based on five main areas that you’ll explore, with three mandatory bosses and one optional boss available. The areas and their bosses include:

  • Sanctuary Garden: Sanctuary Guardian boss
  • Oolacile Sanctuary
  • Royal Woods: Knight Artorias and Black Dragon Kalameet bosses
  • Oolacile Township
  • Chasm Of The Abyss: Manus, Father Of The Abyss boss

The DLC isn’t particularly long and should only take you a few hours to clear, although you’ll likely hit walls when facing Artorias, Kalameet, and Manus, which are collectively some of the hardest boss fights in the original Dark Souls.

If you’re giving the DLC a go, good luck, and while you’re here, why not check out our Dark Souls: Remastered boss order guide for more help? Meanwhile, find out whether we think Dark Souls Remastered is worth it right here.

The Top 10 Most Unique Boss Fights In All The Dark Souls DLC

Dark Souls DLC has always been inventive and unique, whether it’s in the first, second, or supposedly final third game. These expansions really feel like the team at FromSoftware got to play around with the weird concepts that couldn’t make it into the base game.

And, these weird concepts apply to the bosses as well, allowing them to create truly unique encounters that would influence future games to come. Here are our picks for the most unique DLC bosses spread throughout all three games.

10 Dark Souls 2: Fume Knight

Dark Souls 2 is going to be on the list the most, despite being the most polarizing of the three games. Why? Well, quite frankly, it’s because Dark Souls 2 has three different DLC’s while DS3 only had two, and DS1 had a single expansion. And, in the Crown of the Old Iron King DLC, players got to experience the Fume Knight fight. Raime the Fume Knight has an incredibly interesting story and an even more interesting confrontation. This battle is one of FromSoft’s best blends of challenge and atmosphere and even introduces NieR-esque concepts like bullet-hell mechanics.

9 Dark Souls 1: Manus, Father Of The Abyss

Ah, the Father of the Abyss, first of mankind, and the icon behind so many of the original Dark Souls theory videos. Plus, he’s one of the hardest fights in all of Souls. Manus is not only one of the most unique designs in Dark Souls’ history, but he’s also one of the most unique battles. The concept of using the Pendant to give the player a temporary shield from the Abyssal magic was just so unique, and really blended the item and combat systems together. And, fans of the franchise wouldn’t see anything like it used again until Bloodborne where players could use the Music-box to stun Father Gascoigne’s bestial form

8 Dark Souls 2: The Burnt Ivory King

Moving back on over to the Dark Souls 2 with the penultimate battle in the Crown of the Ivory King DLC against the Ivory King himself. This battle is not only one of the most atmospheric across all three games, but also pretty unique in its narrative, gameplay mechanics, and introduction. The leadup to the Old Ivory King is very different than the other two DLC’s, as the arena itself has portals that mobs can spawn out of if players ignored the Loyce Knights spread throughout. But, more than that, the Ivory King is just so insanely badass!

7 Dark Souls 3: Halflight, The Spear Of The Church

The Ringed City DLC for Dark Souls 3 answers many questions that fans have had about the setting since the original game. But, it also adds just as many questions as it answers such as anything having to do with Filianore. Still, a mechanic many fans weren’t expecting to return is one that actually started way back in Demon’s Souls with the Old Monk.

We’re of course talking about the idea of summoning other players as an integral part of the boss fight, which Halflight brings back to the table with the Spears of the Church covenant. We’re happy to see this mechanic returning, and it adds a lot of extra content to the Ringed City DLC.

6 Dark Souls 1: Artorias The Abysswalker

Artorias was one of Gwyn’s Four Elite Knights and arguably the coolest. He’s based on the character of Guts from the popular manga Berserk, has a giant Wolf companion, and benefits from one of FromSoft’s best human designs. But, the actual gameplay in the fight itself is what really stands out. Even being as difficult as it is (especially with a summon), standing your ground against a now corrupted Artorias is just so much fun. It also reinforces the idea that no one could’ve beaten Artorias at his prime, as the version players fight in the DLC is just a shard of who the man really was.

5 Dark Souls 2: Afflicted Graverobber, Ancient Soldier Varg, and Cerah the Old Explorer

So far up to this point, every boss we’ve talked about is unique in their lore, gameplay, and overall atmosphere, but this next one is unique in a different way. Primarily, the Graverobbers fight is unique in the sense that there’s almost no lore here and none of the three NPCs even drop a soul that would point towards some sort of connection between them. Basically, it’s an AI-controlled PVP fight between the player character, a Havel cosplayer, a bow-wielding Lucatiel fan, and an Alva-idolizing dual-blade user. There’s not much to say outside of that, this «boss-fight» doesn’t really feel like one, doesn’t add to the lore of the area, and isn’t all too fun, but it is absolutely unique.

4 Dark Souls 3: Sister Friede

Sister Friede is without a doubt meant to be the most difficult boss-fight in Dark Souls 3, with an astounding three phases that progressively get harder and harder. For the First Phase, Sister Friede simply comes at the Ashen Undead with her scythe and a myriad of frost-afflicting spells. Phase two revolves around Ariandel slamming a bowl onto the player character while Friede interrupts from the side. Then, Phase 3 has Friede transform into Blackflame Friede and come at the player with an all-new moveset and life bar. In this final phase, Friede deals dark damage and is at her most difficult. There’s a lot to this confrontation, and every part of it feels inventive and new.

3 Dark Souls 2: Lud And Zallen, The King’s Pets

There are a ton of optional boss fights in Dark Souls 2. In fact, most of the bosses in the original release were optional with the Shrine of Winter workaround. But, one of the least talked about and most unique optional bosses within all three DLC’s has to be Lud and Zallen.

RELATED: Dark Souls 3: The 10 Most Useful Boss Soul Weapons, Ranked

These two were the pets of the Ivory King, and they were obviously corrupted by Alsanna’s Darkness. These feral cats are meant to be fought in co-op by summoning a friend, and it’s one of the only fights in the series that was designed for the online multiplayer. Are they the most fun bosses to fight? Not really, but still quite the novel concept.

2 Dark Souls 3: The Demon Prince

The Demon Prince is honestly one of the tougher fights in Dark Souls 3. This two-phase battle is both very interesting and very frustrating since the player has to defeat this Prince in order to even access the Ringed City DLC. The Demon Prince is actually the second phase of this fight, as the first phase is a battle between the Ashen Undead, The Demon From Below, and the Demon In Pain. FromSoft games are best when it’s a 1-v-1 situation, so we’re not sure why they keep attempting encounters like this with multiple enemies, but it makes the fight very hectic. Still, the fact that the Demon Prince’s moveset changes depending on which Demon the player killed first is insane, and the pure spectacle of this fight is unlike most other bosses in the entirety of the Souls series (except for maybe The Old Demon King).

1 Dark Souls 2: Sir Alonne

Sir Alonne might be one of the most respectful bosses within all of Souls (other than maybe the Crossbreed Priscilla). Without a doubt, every time the player enters this final part of the Old Iron King DLC, Sir Alonne the honorable knight will bow to them with respect for making it this far in the excruciatingly difficult Brume Tower. Alonne is another human vs human fight, but with so much more grace and finesse than against someone like Fume Knight or Smough. Alonne is insanely fast, aims right for the most critical spots, and is an insanely difficult boss overall. The atmosphere, design of his arena, overall respect, and nature of this fight altogether just absolutely feel unique to Dark Souls 2, and it’s something we haven’t seen since.

Artorias of the Abyss) allows you to travel to the past of the village of Olachil and meet Artorias himself. For this reason, many players either skip it or frantically try to figure out how to get into the dlc in Dark Souls 1.

Step-by-step instructions on how to get into the add-on

In order to get into the DLC in Dark Souls 1 (Remastered or Prepare To Die Edition), you will have to work hard.

1. Kill the Hydra

First of all, you need to deal with the mini-boss Hydra, who lives between the locations of Darkroot Lake and Darkroot Garden. You can deal with him from there, and from there.

Boss Hydra

2. Kill the Golden Crystal Golem

Once the Hydra is finished, carefully move along the left edge of the lake to the cave:

  • If you killed the Hydra in Darkroot Lake, it moves to the side with the waterfall.
  • If from the Darkroot Garden, then move on the left side of the stairs, which descended.

Watch your step, as you can easily fall and die if you accidentally stand on the edge of a cliff, well hidden under water.

Soon you will see a Golden Crystal Golem coming out of a cave-like place. This enemy must be defeated in order to free a girl named Zarya Olachilya. Of course, you can chat with her, but there is no way to get into the DC 1 DLC yet.

Zarya Olachil

Remember the place where you met Zarya, as this is where you will need to return later.

3. Get the Great Chalice

The main character can get it only in Anor Londo from Guinevere the Princess of Light. The path to it opens after killing the obligatory bosses of Dark Souls 1 — Ornstein and Smough.

Guinevere the Princess of Light gives the Great Chalice

Next, you need to install the Great Chalice by descending to the Altar of Fire along with the serpent Frampt, so that now you can not only move between fires in DC 1, but also go to locations previously covered by golden fog. In our case, in the Duke’s Archives.

Frampt is in the Temple of Fire

4. Get the Broken Pendant

Since now the ability to teleport between fires has opened up, we go to the first fire in Anor Londo, which was lit for the first time after being transferred to the location.

Previously, when exploring the place, we went forward, but now we need to turn left past the Guardians, and go up the stairs to the passage to the Archives. Then we follow to the first fire in this location past the Fanged boars.

Climb up and go left

Previously, the entrance was covered with a golden mist

Here is the first bonfire of the Archive

From the first fire, perform the following actions:

5. Return to the lake

At the beginning of the article, we asked you to remember the place on the lake where the hero met Dawn Olachil. So this is where you need to come back.

A dark portal has appeared in the place where the girl used to be. As soon as you examine it, a black hand will appear, which will drag Hollow into a new location.

Portal DLC

We inspect and go to Olachilia

This will begin the passage of the DLC Dark Souls 1 «Artorias of the Abyss» and the meeting with Artorias the Abysswalker himself.

Don’t forget to also grab Olachil’s set, which will lie on the spot where the Golden Golem used to stand, from which you released the girl. The set protects well from the curse in Dark Souls 1.

The game is really harder than the second part.
I’m going through it now. Already deleted it 2 times. Only on the third he pulled himself together.
And he continued to master the intricacies of sadomasochism.

#24

You see, people like Altair or MadAlexa are unrealistically bombed by the fact that there is no save-load in the game, checkpoints in front of each enemy, that there is no recovery of lives, that you can’t just run into a crowd of enemies and call them with the mouse. If you need to act carefully in the game, study enemies, remember the types of their attacks, lure them out one at a time, look for your own approach to each (beat one quickly, provoke another to attack, shoot the third from a distance), and if because of your mistakes you die and lose all the experience gained earlier, and you start almost from the beginning of the level — such a game for them becomes «for masochists and nerds. » Intelligence does not manifest itself there, as in Mist, a game of a completely different genre, which is somehow dragged in here

DS isn’t really a difficult game. After all, if the save-load were removed from Dragon Age, Mass Effect, or Skyrim, then these games would be almost the same. If, after their death in Skyrim, the player would start at the very entrance to the cave or crypt, the players would learn to play and act carefully. People today are used to the fact that in the game after death they are loaded five meters from the place of death, and again rush into battle, they have nothing to lose. Therefore, it is unrealistically difficult for them to play DC. And the difference in essence is only that in the DS one should try not to die, not to rush, and not to take risks, because the price for death is quite high. If this is masochism for them, then I don’t know

@Usagi, Yes. That’s why I fell in love with Shadows of Mordor. For if you die there, the orc-captains, along with the leaders, will do so much crap while you lie down, that you will then get sick of disentangling. Maybe I really should play Dark Souls after Shadows.

After all, the game should not become hard work. For example, unloading wagons.
And I had such a hardcore: I went to the location (2-3 minutes), studied (10 minutes), died (instantly), was reborn by the fire and again went to the location (2-3 minutes). And so — dozens of times. And the fires in the first «Dark Souls» occur like once in five locations. And all just because there are problems with saves on consoles. Well, maybe it’s been fixed already, I don’t know. I don’t have an attachment.
P.S. Let’s go back to the times of «TES: Arena» together. He got infected with something in the cave and died right during the trip to the city. There are no cures, loading a save in the cave won’t help either. One time I got pissed off like that. I had to play the game again (!) (you should have seen this giant — 200+ hours of gameplay). You can load an early save, but not everyone makes dozens of saves. I never do more than 4. In general, I like quick saves to save.
P.P.S. I can’t help but walk through the troll (I can’t pick another word) locations. They are pixel-by-pixel sharpened for the death of the player. It’s easy to write «Prepare to die» on a box when every door in the game is mined, all roads pass through flimsy planks, and at the same time you still need to fight hordes of enemies. In short, I’m ready to sign a petition so that this game is buried along with smart-ass Japanese developers.

P.S. I advise the gothic orc to play the first «Dark Souls». Just let him first buy indestructible computer peripherals. So that it does not break down from bouts of anger.

The only thing that is difficult about the first dark is its buggy, to die from the fact that the camera caught on a stump and turned around, or because you rested on a branch 3 centimeters above the ground, well, this is, as it were, not a difficulty buggy. Out of a hundred of my deaths there, deaths from enemies are, God forbid, 10, the rest is because I didn’t expect glitches or cheaters breaking into me, the enemies themselves are simple in most cases, 99% of them are killed at once.

why not? can i kill all the enemies like this

uh, who is killing you there? I don’t even know what to do there so that they kill you, run to the breach or jump off a cliff or something.

#28

Well, here is the location where they kill. This is the Plague City.
Permanent poisoning (hello from the developers), ending with Estus and a crowd of all kinds of mosquitoes, worms, spiders and other evil spirits. And not a single fire. Not one at all. It is not clear where to go. At least put up a sign.
During battles, sometimes you fall down.
P.S. And don’t mix it up, please. It’s about the first part of the game. The second one is really easier.

#29

Ahh, one of the easiest locations. There are three bonfires there.
It’s elementary, you take a shield with a spider (it’s taken in the sewers where there is a big rat), you always go with a raised shield, first three fat men, lure one at a time, from blows with a club, either back away, or simply go around them from behind and clean their anus with a crit. Then skinless freaks run, also to lure out two pieces, then two more. On the right sits a spitter with poisonous darts, you have to get up so that they hit the boards. With a spider shield, its poison damage does not pass at all. These spitters are disposable, even after resting by the fire they do not appear.
You go across the moving bridge, there are still a couple of skinless freaks, you have to go down two stairs, and there will be a fire on the stone bridge. From there you can go to the right for things, or to the left, there through the skinless and two fiery dogs, then there will be another spitter on the right, you need to lure two freaks towards the fire, where he can’t get it. Further down the right stairs, you will reach the second spitter. Then go back a little, and in the center there will be a long staircase up, there is a third spitter (if there is a bow, then both of them can generally be removed from a distance from the first platforms above the fire). but you have to go lower, there will be an exit to the second location, you run straight and go down the roots into the poison, this poison poisons very slowly, you don’t need to heal from it at all, only sometimes you have to drink estus. Just after going down the root into the swamp, there will be an opening to the right behind the column, and there is a second fire. After that, you can explore the swamp. There are larvae on the left side, and an ascent to a secret location with trees, you need to break two secret walls, and there will be a third fire.
