Ellie is an NPC introduced in Borderlands 2. She is Mad Moxxi’s daughter and Scooter’s sister, and is the mechanic that introduces the Bandit Technical.

Background

Ellie and her family were part of the Hodunk clan, until the Hodunks decided to make her the clan-wife. Disgusted, Moxxi killed the clan leader at the time and took both her children with her, eventually ending up in Sanctuary.

Ellie became so fed up with Moxxi’s insistence that she slim down her physique that she left Sanctuary and moved into The Dust, worrying her mother with the fact that she intentionally puts herself in the middle of the ongoing clan war between the Hodunks and the Zafords.

Involvement

When the Vault Hunters have need of a bandit vehicle to get past the Bloodshot gang, they are directed to Ellie. Unfortunately, the Bandit Technical she had was crushed shortly before the Vault Hunters’ arrival, so she sets a task of collecting various car parts to complete another.

She is later involved in a series of missions to reignite a feud between the Hodunks and the Zafords. At her urging, the Vault Hunters strike a few minor targets on each side, setting up an escalating cycle of violence until both clans are all but decimated.

During the Commander Lilith & the Fight for Sanctuary side mission Space Cowboy, she is given ownership of the Catch-A-Ride system through her late brother’s last wishes, and helps the Vault Hunters erect a memorial in the Dahl Abandon for Scooter.

A staple of the Borderlands franchise, Mad Moxxi certainly has a colored history, so here are 5 fun, weird, and shocking facts about her.

Mad Moxxi has been a staple of the Borderlands franchise since the first game, but many may have been surprised when the role she played in the Borderlands 3 base game was severely diminished. However, given that she is the main quest giver for the first story DLC, Mad Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot, many may excited to see her back at her antics.

Yet, playing through this DLC may also remind players just how little they know about Mad Moxxi and her history leading into Borderlands 3. After all, it has been quite some time, so here a few things everyone should know about Mad Moxxi.

Mad Moxxi’s Lovers & Marriages

It’s no secret that Mad Moxxi has had a string of lovers, both male and female, and quite a few marriages to boot. Considering her intro text states «SWF Looking 4 STR» (Single White Female Looking for Short-Term Relationship), there should be little surprise here, but a few of the names may not stand out so easily Chronologically, it’s unknown if they were married, but Moxxi would have been with Jimbo Hodunk as part of her clan when she mothered Scooter. Mr. Shank from the first game’s Secret Armory of General Knoxx DLC is her second husband, and Marcus Kincaid was her third husband.

Between Borderlands 1 and Borderlands 2, she has a relationship with both Mordecai and Handsome Jack. There’s no evidence that she ever married either of them. She has also hit on a number of others, including Lilith, and was in a relationship with Motor Momma at one point. Her most recent appears to be Timothy, but like most of her relationships, its ambiguous at best.

Mad Moxxi’s Age (Don’t Think About It)

It’s impolite to ask a woman her age, but when it comes down to it, Mad Moxxi’s age is sort of hard to put together. It comes down to the fact that she has two children, Ellie and Scooter, who appear to be mid 20s to early 30s themselves during the events of Borderlands 1 and 2. Borderlands 3 is then 7 years after the second game. Assuming Scooter was roughly 25 in Borderlands 2 and Ellie was 30, that puts Ellie at roughly 37 in Borderlands 3.

Assuming Moxxi was a young mother at 15 when she had Ellie, that puts her at 52 years old. Of course, Moxxi could have been 18-20 at the same, which would add 3-5 more years to the that at least. It would explain Moxxi’s heavy makeup, but this it is a strange thing that she could easily be one of the oldest Borderlands 3 characters aboard the Sanctuary 3. What’s more, this doesn’t even take into account her other two children (mentioned below), with one confirmed child being older than Scooter and the other being a complete ghost. Either way, it’s a head-scratcher and these are just approximations, but early 50s to early-to-mid 60s in Borderlands 3 seems to be the most logical, if shocking, time frame.

Mad Moxxi’s Movie References

Moxxi has long been a source of movie references for the franchise, which is on full show for the Borderlands 3 Handsome Jackpot DLC which is just one big classic casino heist movie. There’s even a montage for executing the plan. But it doesn’t begin (nor likely end) there. Several of her quotes reference movies like The Running Man, in terms of hosting a show in a battle dome, or even Ghostface from Scream, taking a line from him after he asks a trivia question. Her name is taken from Mad Max, and her original Underdome was a taken the Thunderdome. Perhaps the least surprising is the fact that her character design comes from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Mad Moxxi’s Children

Borderlands 2 players who give Moxxi a large tip will learn that she’s had four children. Ellie and Scooter have been revealed, and Scooter mentions an older sister also named Scooter. Nothing is known about the fourth child. As such, players may expect to see these characters pop up at some point in the future, though with Moxxi heralding the first story DLC, it seems less likely she’ll get more character development in yet another DLC.

Mad Moxxi’s Voice Actress

If Mad Moxxi’s voice sounds similar, it’s because she’s voice by Brina Palencia, a prominent English voice actress who has lent her voice to a variety of anime and video game characters. Aside from Moxxi, Palencia has voiced Nina Tucker in Fullmetal Alchemist, Eve in Black Cat, several characters in One Piece, Chiaotzu in Dragon Ball Z Kai (and Dragon Ball FighterZ and other games), Juvia Lockser in Fairy Tail, Artemis/Cup in Smite, Mellka in Bloodborne, Arya/Lute in Fire Emblem Heroes, and much, much more. If nothing else, Palencia’s numerous roles speak to her experience and make it clear as to why she does Borderlands 3‘s Mad Moxxi so well.

Moxie can be described in a few words: lustful, dangerous, sexy. Moxxi loves violence, slaughter, and at the same time she herself is a skilled fighter from an early age. In order to find a fourth husband, Crazy Moxxi built the Dome. The rules are simple: the one who overcomes all the matches will receive her hand. Moxxi comments on what is happening in the arenas from the towers located there.

In the end, the winner of the Dome is one of the top four Vault Hunters, Mordecai. But Moxxi’s relationship with him did not last long. In fact, Mordecai got off lightly, as he remained alive, unlike most of her other husbands. Moxxi left him for Handsome Jack (although she herself justifies this by saying that Mordecai allegedly paid more attention to his pet bird, Bloodwing). nine0003

Moxxi helps ex-Lance Assassin Athena rid the planet of the Atlas Corporation. She first shelters the girl in her bar near the Dome, Moxxi’s Red Light, while awaiting the arrival of the Seekers from T-Bone Junction. But Moxxi’s ex-husband, Mr. Shank, is ahead of them, and is about to collect a bounty on the deserter’s head. After the massacre in the bar, he nevertheless kidnaps her, and then keeps her in his lair, in the old Lockdown Palace prison. Moxxi helps the Seekers to get to the bandits, but then she is hard pressed by Shank’s death, despite her own parting words to reach the prison. nine0003

After the loss of Atlas influence on Pandora, construction of the Hyperion Corporation’s Helios space station begins in Elpis’s orbit. Meanwhile, Moxxi (Moon Moxxi, to be exact), accompanied by Lilith and Roland, opens a new upside down bar in Concordia, the largest spaceport on the moon. At some point, she starts a relationship with a programmer named Jack, who is in charge of business at the station under construction. But, knowing his character and «hero complex», Moxxi stops dating him. nine0003

After some time, the station is taken over by the Forgotten Legion, and Jack, with the Seekers he has hired, turns to Moxxi for help. She saw this as a good opportunity to kick another corporation out of the system before it messed up.

First, Moxxi coordinates the Seekers’ efforts to find a signal that is jamming the station’s defenses. At the same time, because of the unlucky piece of iron assistant, her passion for technology is revealed, and Moxxi asks the mercenaries to keep quiet about it, adding that they will be overtaken by punishment in the person of her son (however, the promise will be broken by an old acquaintance of Moxie, and, ironically, she will go unpunished ). nine0003

Moxxi later enlists Lilith and Roland in the operation, supporting her views on Jack’s actions. Fully gaining trust, she obtains the blueprints for the station and successfully guides everyone to the laser. There, she deliberately misinstructs the mercenaries to destroy the weapon and Jack himself along with it. After Moxxi reveals the cards, Lilith and Roland leave the station, but the resulting singularity only destroys the laser and the Legion’s cruisers, leaving the station’s crew alive. After that, Moxxi supposedly returned to Pandora. nine0003

After his transformation, Handsome Jack sets out to purge bandits from Pandora and, together with New Harbor, destroys the Moxxi Dome. She has to move to the Sanctuary along with the rest of the surviving Scarlet Raiders.

Moxxi owns a bar in the city and also owns three arenas outside of it: Dome Slaughter, Fink’s Slaughter and Hyperion Slaughterhouse. The arenas are run by Captain Cabrera, Fink the rat, and Moxxi’s hacked Hyperion Loader Vulgar-5000. With all this, she does not miss the opportunity to take revenge on Jack for the destruction of the Dome, but argues his act with jealousy (the real motives are revealed much later, during the interrogation of Athena). nine0003

Moxxi is one of the sponsors of the Torgue Corporation tournament, she wants to get the arena, but is kidnapped by Pyro Pete, the tournament participant, who is in fourth place in the crazy rating. After being rescued by the last Vault Hunters, Moxxi sponsors them.

The next target of the searchers is the third member in the rating — Mommy, who is also Moxxi’s former lover. According to the latter, their relationship ended after Moxxi found out about the cannibalistic addictions of the racer and that her mother ate her previous girlfriend alive. After defeating the psychopath, Moxxi continues to coordinate his seekers, and then commentates on the last fights along with Mr. Torrgue himself (and Tina). nine0003

Eventually Moxxi acquires the rights to the arena, in exchange for keeping quiet about the illegality of the tournament, which Mr. Torgue did not know about, and a significant share of the corporation’s shares.

Three months after the release, Borderlands 3 is more than fine: the game regularly receives free content updates, and recently the first major addition, Moxxi’s Heist of Handsome Jackpot, was released. Despite the fact that such a boom in popularity, which was awarded to Borderlands 2 , the third part still did not achieve, the developers are working to the fullest. The DLC turned out to be a success: one might even say that this is one of the best additions to the Borderlands series in general. All thanks to a competent script, which was successfully tied to the villain loved by everyone, and a thorough study of every corner of the space casino.

Place your bets, big spender!

Crazy Moxxi needs your help again — this time she has decided to take control of her now-deceased former Handsome Jack’s huge space casino. True, there is one catch: everyone who enters the institution can no longer leave. And if you have already crossed the threshold of the casino, you will have to forever dispel longing in the company of slot machines, roulette and card tables. After Jack’s death, this place completely turned into a kind of purgatory, where internal communities and gangs began to form — and, of course, it could not have done without new heroes and villains. nine0003

One of the latter, a dwarf named Handsome, is what we have to fight in the expansion. He managed to take over the management of the casino, so now not only many gangs of thugs are under his control, but also local security systems. Handsome could not solve only one riddle: some sections of the station are still locked, because they can only be visited by Handsome Jack. As well as managing some secret project, which he, it turns out, disguised as a casino. nine0003

It is precisely in order to get into the restricted areas that the heroes will need Timothy Lawrence — Jack’s double, whom fans of the universe will probably remember from the time of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel . The poor fellow still walks around with the face and DNA of the most bloodthirsty psychopath in the observable universe — and he, frankly, does not like it at all. He also doesn’t like to sit in prison inside the casino and be afraid for his life, because Handsome has put a reward on his head. Timothy is not the only addition to the Searchers team. In Moxxi’s Heist of Handsome Jackpot, we’ll meet a whole host of new characters, such as dropping into the local «lust district», chatting with local dancers and dancers, and even meeting the legendary musician Digby Wermouth (who, by the way, wrote a couple of soundtracks for the game) ! In other words, Gearbox has made great efforts to create a unique adventure and give the player new emotions within the third board. nine0003

The add-on really gives the feeling that we are participating in some kind of robbery of the century: the game constantly throws up moments that seem to be pulled straight out of the movie about Ocean’s friends. Even the production of cutscenes was adjusted to the style of «robbery movie». For example, the development of a plan to penetrate the VIP zone was designed as a series of short cutscenes, between which it is necessary to turn each part of the plan into reality. True, there are relatively few such moments, but each one is truly captivating — and ten hours of passage fly by unnoticed. nine0003

A casino made with love

Honestly, I was even surprised: I don’t remember that the first DLC for any of the parts of Borderlands was done so well. Although there are few locations, each has its own style and individual gameplay features. There is even a level with low gravity, where you have to fly at super-speed and shoot opponents — this is generally a separate pleasure. Every nook and cranny of the map is clearly worked out with love: there are no crooked objects, no deserted corners. That is why you want to search the locations to the point of insanity, constantly looking for new bars, gambling establishments and other hot spots. nine0003

Slot machines or special VIP doors, which require a large sum of money to open, are everywhere. But the most interesting thing is a new box with loot! To get cooler loot from it, you need to play blackjack, and, of course, make your bet

New mini-tasks on the map are also pushing for research. There are three types of them: blowing up MR. TORRG’S SUPERMEGA HOT SAUCE, destroying statues of Pretty Girl and collecting fragments of a special costume from a local tailor. The latter is a kind of “two in one”: you need to not only find the item itself (like the Pieces of Claptrap that are scattered everywhere in the main Borderlands 3), but also recapture it from the mini-boss (like with contracts from Zer0). Completing such quests is not difficult, and for successful completion they give legendary guns and customization items. nine0003
