Bester controller ps4: The best PS4 controllers you can buy in 2022

The best PS4 controllers you can buy in 2022

Depending on the games you play, the best PS4 controllers could add a whole new lease of life to your PS5 playtime. If you play a PS4 game that hasn’t received a next-gen update, your PS4 controllers will work on PS5. If you take a competitive multiplayer shooter like Hunt: Showdown, as an example, a PS4 pro controller with additional back buttons could lend you a competitive edge over PS5 players using the DualSense.

What’s more, now that there are more PS5 controller options hitting the market, you might not need to burn as big a hole in your pocket to pick up a sophisticated set of PS4 buttons. While the DualShock 4 is still an incredibly viable option, particularly if you managed to get your hands on a back-button attachment, we’ve pulled together a list of our favorite gamepads from third parties.

Back in 2016, PlayStation officially outsourced its pro controller production to third parties like Nacon and Razer. Granting official licenses to these externally produced controllers allowed them to combat Xbox’s official Elite line of pro controllers, but it isn’t until now that the Japanese console giant has come to market with a homemade pro gamepad. The DualSense Edge releases in January of 2023, and that means some of the pricier PS4 controllers we’ve enjoyed may well come down in price. We’d still argue these controllers are worth considering, especially since many of them appear in our best PC controller list.

It should go without saying, but one of the best PS4 controllers is actually the one you get right out of the box: the Dualshock 4. A faithful continuation of previous Dualshock controller designs, this fourth iteration also sprinkled in a couple of new features that have since become synonymous with the PS4 console itself. The central touchpad, for example, makes bringing up the map in most games a breeze, and sharing out captured screenshots and recordings can be done instantly thanks to the dedicated Share button that replaces the previous select button.

Design-wise, the Dualshock 4 controller also doesn’t disappoint. It’s beefy and rigid to cope with a fair amount of harsh button mashing, but equally slim enough that holding it never becomes uncomfortable. Typically, the Dualshock 4 will last for up to 8 hours following a full charge, which mightn’t be the most generous but is enough to see you through those extended play sessions.

Picking up a Dualshock 4 controller brand new also means you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to patterns and color. Those not wanting to opt for standard Jet Black can pick from Wave Blue, Glacier White, and even Sunset Orange. There’s plenty of reasons to love the Dualshock 4, easily rendering it one of the best PS4 controllers. and yes, it’ll work on the new PS5 as well, although only for PS4 games.

The Terios Gaming Pro Controller comes in at under $40, but we often see it on sale for way less than that. These wireless PS4 controllers can sometimes sit as cheap as $23, and considering the feature-set on offer that makes them a must-see for anyone after a budget alternative. Terios claims a battery life of up to 10 hours from these multi-colored gamepads, a figure which sounds just about likely considering the 1200mAh rechargeable battery.

However, the real value-buster here is the full wireless compatibility with rumble, built-in speakers, and an extra set of programmable buttons. Those are some serious specs and, while the quality won’t match those of pricier options, being able to tinker with such features is always a welcome bonus on a cheap controller.

You’ll find the Terios available in black, blue, or orange, and each model tends to offer a slightly different price tag at Amazon. We’d recommend flicking through the different options to make sure you’re getting the best discount.

Software takes time to learn

You can always rely on Nacon for great build quality, but in the Nacon Revolution Unlimited the third-party accessories specialist has outdone itself. When testing we found that what makes it one of the best PS4 controllers is its incredibly flexible functionality, which offers gamers the ability to do such things as play wired or wirelessly, tweak the controller’s joystick using the interchangeable heads provided, and map their preferred controls to no less than 4 configurable shortcut buttons. Add in a true 8-way D-pad and the Nacon Revolution Unlimited Pro PS4 controller is every professional eSports player’s dream.

A dizzying amount of customization

Nacon Unlimited Pro review

The most notable way the Nacon Revolution Unlimited differs from what most PS4 players are used to is its analog stick placement. No longer are they situated directly apart from each other in symmetrical fashion, instead opting for the classic offset design you’d likely find when playing Xbox One. This is a massive boon for players that find this setup more natural to interact with. While not game-changing by any means, we found that another nice touch is Nacon Revolution Unlimited’s inclusion of LED lighting indicators, which supplants the standard Dualshock 4’s lightbar to let players know the status of important in-game factors (like health) and easily notify you whenever power is low.

When testing this product out we found that it feels great to hold and the controls are extremely satisfying to use. You can feel the quality of the Nacon Revolution Unlimited just by holding it.

Other entries on this list may try and distance themselves from the classic Dualshock 4 design, but the Nacon Asymmetric Wireless Controller has opted to keep things familiar – bar one notable exception. You see, in this design Nacon has affectionately recognized the appeal the Dualshock 4 offers so many players via its ergonomic design, with the only real major difference being that the gamepad’s analog sticks are, you guessed it, asymmetrical. This is particularly useful for those that find the traditional PS4 controller layout oddly off-putting. Certainly one to consider if you prefer the Xbox One controllers.

While switching the d-pad and left thumbstick may not sound like much, it makes a huge difference in practice

Nacon Asymmetric Wireless Controller rev

It makes our list of the best PS4 controllers largely because of how it fills this admittedly niche gap so well, all while still retaining the convenience that comes through wireless play and functionating almost identically to the traditional Dualshock 4. The Nacon Asymmetrical Wireless Controller might be a little plumber than its direct influence, but we found even that gives it a satisfying sense of heft any devout PS4 player will come to appreciate. It also helps that the controller features a price that’s competitive when compared to other third-party PS4 gamepad options.

When we were testing the Nacon, we were particularly impressed by the comfort of it — it felt great to hold and use for long periods of time. However, a downside when we tried it was the fact that a USB wireless dongle was needed.

Note: This controller is generally unavailable in the US.

On the expensive side

PS4 players looking for a competitive edge should absolutely consider the Razer Raiju Tournament Edition controller, which pitches itself squarely as a premium eSports solution. Not only does it boast a nice weight and build quality to help relay that premium feel, but it also offers players a suite of programmable options thanks to the corresponding Razer app. We found that it was really easy to just simply sync the app to the controller via Bluetooth and away you go, able to tweak the function of each button however you see fit and even set the level of rumble on either side of the gamepad. In terms of the best PS4 controllers for sheer versatility, the Razer Raiju Tournament Edition certainly earns its place.

Finely tuned, expensive, and precise, the Razer Raiju Tournament Edition is a handset designed to perform.

Razer Raiju Tournament Edition review

The Razer Raiju Tournament Edition succeeds from a pure design perspective too, again different from the traditional Dualshock 4 by featuring offset analog sticks and face buttons that deliver extremely tactile feedback. Still, we felt the design also represents the best of both worlds, as evidenced by the split D-pad and emphasis on the central touchpad, which is bordered by RGB lighting to really add some pizzazz. Striking this balance between eSports equipped yet practical renders the Razer Raiju Tournament Edition as one of the best PS4 controllers around.

It may be worth noting that we found that the sticks weren’t grippy enough when we were testing the Raiju Tournament Edition. However, the quality of the controller can really be felt when using it as this was the only downside other than the price.

Simple and easy module swapping

Great build quality

Reasons to avoid

Unusual aesthetic design

Despite being primarily known for developing some of the best PC steering wheels around, Thrustmaster’s first true attempt at supplanting the Dualshock 4 controller is also one of the best. A lot of this is down to how it handles customization, which works by letting players swap out different button modules depending on their functional or aesthetic preferences. There’s also a suite of extra configurable buttons located on the eSwap Pro’s backplate – perfect for tournament players craving a competitive edge. There are four of them in total, and rather than opt for the traditional paddles you see with most eSports controllers, Thrustmaster’s take better resemble face buttons and are therefore harder to mistakenly press.

After tweaking around with the eSwap Pro’s modules enough to find your perfect layout, we found that it’s easy and comfortable to settle in for extended play sessions. When testing it was great that button presses, for example, deliver a tactile feel and a satisfying sense of feedback as any eSports-centric controller should, while the textured grips on either side of the gamepad always ensure you can maintain a handle on things during the heat of competitive play. Better still, those grips, much like the analog sticks and D-pad, can be entirely switched out for an alternative option. Only the best PS4 controllers offer such flexibility, and the Thrustmaster eSwap Pro is one of them.

Best PS4 controller: FAQs

What is the best PS4 controller?

While we’ve found that the best all-rounder for most people is the DualShock 4, The Nacon Revolution Unlimited, is incredibly flexible and has excellent functionality for PS4 games and for playing on PC. It also provides an asymmetrical feel which some Xbox players may be used to. Another great option in terms of pro controllers, is the Razer Raiju Tournament, which has an ergonomic design and tactile button feedback.

Is the DualShock 4 or 5 better?

The question of whether the DualShock 4 or DualSense is a better controller really comes down to you, and your preferences. The DualSense certainly has more versatile, upgraded technology inside it. Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers allow more accurate and specific feedback for developers to harness when they think about game feel. However, for plenty of people, the fit, size, and shape of the DualShock 4 is all together more comfortable. Depending on what games you play, you may only be able to use one or the other, but ultimately, what’s more comfortable for you is the better controller.

How much should I pay for a PS4 controller?

The price you pay will depend on the features you are after, the DualShock 4 sits at $60 but can go as low as $40 on Amazon. However if you are after something catered to competitive players then the Razer Raiju Tournament is likely more suited to you which can come in at above $120.

Can you use a PS4 controller with PS5?

If you’ve managed to scout out some PS5 stock, there’s some good news for your PS4 collection. You can use a PS4 controller on your PS5 console as long as you’re playing PS4 games. However, you will need to use the DualSense that comes in your console’s box for new-generation titles.

Why are DualShock 4 controllers so expensive?

The DualShock 4 was, in our opinion, the best controller for most PS4 players. It provides many great features at a lower price point than many other controllers on the market. Although it may seem pricey, it is well worth the money spent when comparing with other controller options.

Ever since playing Journey at the age of 15, I’ve been desperate to cover video games for a living. After graduating from Edinburgh Napier University with a degree in Journalism, I contributed to the Scottish Games Network and completed an Editorial Internship over at Expert Reviews. Besides that, I’ve been managing my own YouTube channel and Podcast for the last 7 years. It’s been a long road, but all that experience somehow landed me a dream job covering gaming hardware. I’m a self-confessing PlayStation fanboy, but my experience covering the larger business and developer side of the whole industry has given me a strong knowledge of all platforms. When I’m not testing out every peripheral I can get my hands on, I’m probably either playing tennis or dissecting game design for an upcoming video essay. Now, I better stop myself here before I get talking about my favourite games like HUNT: Showdown, Dishonored, and Towerfall Ascension.

But the performance isn’t the same. However, the L1 and L2 buttons and R1 and R2 buttons work quite well and the operations are smooth. The thumb sticks are textured and have a wider dead zone. The controller has dual motors in it. The integrated light is another important feature.

Final Words

In a nutshell, whether you have a PS4 or any other station or even if you are planning to get one, then the multiple controllers for playing games are of great help in this case. The PS4 controllers mentioned above along with their features are of great use if you are a game lover. They are of great help in case the primary controller stops working. This guide is a detailed article that guides about the PS4 controllers while keeping the customer’s needs in mind.

Best DS4Windows Alternatives to Use PS4 Controller on PC

Use Dualshock 4 Controller on your Windows PC to the fullest with DS4Windows, a portable application that allows you to get the best experience while using DualShock 4 on your computer. By emulating the DS4 console, many games can be accessed.

This is an all-in-one solution specially designed for avid gamers who want to enjoy quick first maneuvers and role-playing games with various features. The most interesting fact about these tools is that they allow you to use Xbox one consoles and all other accessories by installing an emulator. nine0003

تعد Dualshock 4. Controller A great way to experience PC games. Named the best controller for PC by the PC Gamer website, although it was not designed for PC gaming. DS4Windows is the default tool many people use to connect their DS4 controller to a PC. This is a great and easy to use solution. But in terms of customization, it is sorely lacking. We’ve compiled a list of DS4Windows alternatives that will let you do a little more through your PS4 console. nine0003

1. Steam Big Picture Mode

for whom: Users who are already part of the Steam ecosystem.

If you’re a Steam user with a PS4 console, you’re in luck: Big Picture on Steam has been updated for some time now with native support for DS4, Xbox One console, Switch Pro console, and USB universal controllers.

There is an interesting story behind this. Valve, the company behind Steam, released its own controller a few years ago called the Steam Controller. It was a complete failure in the market because the console was buggy and unreliable at launch. I had an operation on a fun game — and was having a hard time with my Steam Controller. My account has been off Steam for over a year. I started using it again a few months ago and the experience has improved a lot. Unfortunately, it was too little, too late. The Steam Big Picture mode has arrived. So instead of keeping the Steam controller exclusive functionality, they opened up big picture mode support for all major consoles, including the DS4. nine0003

The setup process is amazingly easy. Hold down the PlayStation button and the Share button on your DS4 controller until you see the light bar start flashing repeatedly. This blinking indicates that the controller is now in pairing mode. Then open the Steam app and enter Big Picture Mode, then enable PS4 configuration support on the console. After that, you can simply connect your DS4 wireless dongle to your computer and that’s it.

Big Picture allows you to customize the DS4 extensively. You can set it to use the gyroscope for movement. You can use the touchpad as a mouse tool on a PC. And, of course, you can reset the buttons as you see fit. Because it’s easy to set up and because it’s the closest thing to «official» support for DS4 on Windows, Steam Big Picture Mode is our personal recommendation as an alternative to DS4Windows. However, it has one big drawback:

The big picture and console mode are inextricably linked to Steam. This is not a DS4 system-wide driver, so it only works on Steam. However, it doesn’t really matter. Steam gives you the ability to add non-Steam games and support them more reliably now than it did at a recent launch. But that means you’ll have to configure everything along the way through Steam. Also, you can only open your games in Steam Big Picture Mode if you want to fully support the console. You can’t just click an icon on your desktop and launch a game console. There is a setting for desktop mode, but it’s not as reliable as we’d like. This model is not without support for Big DS Mode, although it is not without flaws, provided that you use Steam anyway. nine0003

Positive:

  1. Full customizable control buttons
  2. This can be used to set up keyboard controls on the DS4 for games that do not support native console input.

Minus:

  1. Not a system-wide driver
  2. Forces you to use Steam even for non-Steam games

2. SCP Toolkit

for whom: Users who also want to connect PS3 and PS2 controllers

The SCP has been around for a long time. I’ve been using it to connect my Dualshock 3 controllers to my PC for 5 years now. It was released in 2011, making it older than the PS4 itself. It was designed with PS3 and PS2 controllers in mind, with DS4 support added later. Fun fact: DS4Windows is already using the SCP driver, adding features for DS4 users. This means that if you use the SCP Toolkit, you are using the same for your computer. The main difference is that since SCP has access to many other Dualshock devices, you can use it to connect PS2, PS3 and PS4 controllers to your PC. This is ideal for flexible PC use. I often run Super Smash Bros Brawl, a Wii game, through the Dolphin emulator. nine0003

When friends come over, it’s easy to play four identical matches: two PS3 controllers, a Dualshock 4 and a Steam controller, all running at the same time. SCP makes this seemingly impossible combination a reality. But the main drawback is reliability. SCP may work if you are not using an original Sony console. Also Bluetooth and wired combinations work, but only occasionally. If you want to use SCP for a Bluetooth connection, you need to configure your Bluetooth adapter to do so. It can handle up to 4 DS3 controllers at once, but you’ll need another adapter for any other Bluetooth controller you have. So while SCP offers a lot of flexibility, it comes at the cost of reliability. nine0003

Positive:

  1. Can be used to connect multiple generations of Dualshock controllers
  2. Systemwide Control Software

Minus:

  1. Installing and configuring drivers, especially with Bluetooth technology, can be unreliable.
  2. I no longer receive updates

3. Pinnacle Game Profiler

for whom: Users who want to use the DS4 in PC games without the support of original consoles. nine0003

Pinnacle Profiler has been around for a very long time, long before PS4, and is the oldest solution on our list. What Pinnacle allows you to do is assign keyboard and mouse functions to gamepads. There are many gamepad matching solutions out there, but what sets Pinnacle apart is that it has a wide variety of profiles designed specifically for specific games. While input icons will still appear as a keyboard and mouse keyboard, Pinnacle’s improved profiles may look just as good as the original console’s support. It should be added here that Pinnacle itself does not support the DS4 console: Before using Pinnacle, you must run DS4 with a system-wide driver such as SCP or DS4Windows. nine0003

Once you get it right, Pinnacle Profiler is a good way to try out many PC games that would otherwise require keyboard and mouse tweaks, like Dragon Age: Origins or the STALKER series. Many of these games are optimized for keyboard and mouse operation, so the console may not give you the optimal response. However, Pinnacle will let you play games on the couch using the DS4 in a game that would otherwise require you to remove the keyboard. nine0003

DS4Tool

for whom: For users who need more customization options than DS4Windows offers

DS4Windows’ biggest advantage is also its main weakness: it’s extremely easy to use. This is a plug-and-play solution that may not provide all the customization that a true power user would want. It allows you to set the color of the light bar and also has some control mapping features. However, DS4Tool is the best option if you want to access deeper input customization. DS4Tool gives you precise control over a range of input settings such as rumble intensity and touchpad sensitivity for normal taps and scrolling. It also allows you to reset the buttons. Best of all, the real-time change switcher allows you to make these adjustments and see how they work in real time. nine0003

If you have arthritis or other problems that can make it difficult to control, DS4Tool allows you to set the mid trigger point (the amount of pressure you need to apply to the triggers to register input). This can make shooting games accessible to many users.

DS4Tool is not without flaws. The setup is not as memorable as DS4Windows. For example, you need to manually plug and unplug your console each time you press the PS button: if you forget, you’ll have to run to charge the battery. In addition, DS4Tool presents DS4 controllers as Xinput devices (Xbox 360 consoles) in the system. With the built-in control scheme, you can remap controls to different Xbox features, but you can’t assign keyboard or mouse buttons — you’ll need something like Pinnacle for that. nine0003

Positive:

  1. Offers fine tuning input
  2. This makes setting the middle trigger point more convenient for users with different skills.

Minus:

  1. Does not support automatic connection and disconnection
  2. More likely to fail than DS4Windows

final words

Each of these tools has its advantages and disadvantages. With the exception of Pinnacle Profiler (which should be used on top of the DS4 driver), each of these options is a viable full alternative to DS4Windows. Steam Big Picture Mode is the default port to connect to: if you’re using Steam, this is the closest you’ll get to the «official» DS4 support you’ll get on Windows. It offers powerful customization and display features. However, it’s tied to Steam, and trying to use the DS4 system-wide can quickly become frustrating. nine0003

SCP and DS4Tool are great alternatives to DS4Windows. However, they are not easy to use and both are more prone to failure than DS4Windows. However, SCP allows the use of older Dualshock devices and provides DS4Tool. Ability to control more input settings such as touchpad sensitivity and rumble intensity. From personal experience, we consider Steam Big Picture Mode to be the best solution: it is directly from Valve, so there is official support. Also, you can’t get old by aiming. And driving in the game (which you can customize with this). nine0003

How to connect and use a PS4 DualShock controller on a Windows 10 PC or laptop

If you have a DualShock 4 controller, you can connect it to your Windows 10 or earlier PC or laptop and use it in most different games, emulators, and, if desired, to control a computer instead of a mouse. nine0003

This manual details how to connect the DualShock from PlayStation 4 to Windows 10 via cable or Bluetooth, how to make the gamepad emulate the XBox 360 controller and why this may be required.

  • Connecting the DualShock 4 to a computer
  • Using the PlayStation controller to play games on Windows 10
    • DS4Windows
    • InputMapper

Connecting the DualShock 4 to a computer or laptop

You can simply connect the controller with a USB cable — it will be automatically defined as «Wireless Controller» in the device manager and in the list of devices in the «Parameters».

The second method is Bluetooth connection. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Share button on your controller and press and hold the PlayStation button. After a while, the controller will enter Bluetooth pairing mode, and the indicator on the controller will blink white. nine0032
  2. In Windows 10, go to Settings — Devices — Bluetooth and other devices and add a new Bluetooth device named Wireless Controller. If prompted for a code, enter 0000 (four zeros).

This will connect the DualShock 4 to Windows 10 via Bluetooth. Attention: according to user feedback, Bluetooth connection with DualShock on a computer or laptop does not always work stably. Sometimes it helps to install the original BT adapter drivers and disable the power saving features for the controller in its properties in the device manager (in the Bluetooth and HID devices section), but not always. nine0003

Using a PlayStation controller to play games on Windows 10

In some cases, some additional configuration of the DualShock 4 may not be required: for example, PS4 controllers are supported and configured on Steam. Some console emulators allow you to configure control from a connected gamepad in the corresponding control settings (it happens that the setup succeeds with a USB connection, but does not work via Bluetooth). But in some other PC games and emulators, the connected DualShock 4 may simply not be visible, and clicks are not registered. nine0003

In this case, emulating the Xbox 360 controller will help us. If we make the games “think” that the Xbox controller is connected, then most of them will start working properly with the controller, provided that they support this type of control in principle . Various third-party programs can be used to emulate an Xbox controller on the DualShock 4. The most popular and efficient are DS4Windows and InputMapper.

DS4Windows

The free DS4Windows program is available for download at the official release https://github.com/Jays2Kings/DS4Windows/releases. After downloading, unzip the program to a convenient location, run the DS4Windows. exe file (before starting the following steps, it is better to disconnect the gamepad from the computer):

  1. After launch, you will be asked where to save the settings — to the folder with the program or AppData. Choose at your discretion, but I recommend the folder with the program.
  2. On first launch, you will be prompted to install the DS4 driver for Windows 10, 8.1, or Windows 7 (button at the top of the window), and Windows 7 will also require a separate Xbox 360 controller driver. Install the required drivers.
  3. Connect your DualShock 4 via USB or Bluetooth as described at the beginning of the manual. nine0032
  4. If everything went well, in the main window of DS4Windows you will see the connection status of your controller and, in general, it will already be ready to work with the default profile. And it can be used in games and emulators.
  5. An Xbox 360 controller for Windows appears in Device Manager.
  6. Optionally, you can customize the management profile in DS4Windows, create multiple profiles, change backlight settings, and other settings. If the settings are not clear to you, it is usually enough to leave the default values. nine0032

Please note that when the program is closed (by default, it does not close, but is minimized to the Windows notification area), the gamepad ceases to be an “Xbox 360 controller”, and becomes a regular DualShock 4.

InputMapper

The InputMapper program (official site https://inputmapper.com/) is more advanced, but it may seem more complicated for some users. In general terms, its initial setting is as follows:

  1. Install the program, run it.
  2. If a DualShock 4 is connected, you will see a message that a new supported device has been found. Click the «Begin Configuration» button.
  3. In the next window, you will need to select which device will be emulated. Most games require the 360 Controller to be selected (but if you wish, you can emulate a keyboard and mouse on your DualShock 4, this option is available in some cases, for example, for games that do not support gamepads, it can be useful).
