Anime spiele für pc: The best anime games on PC 2022

The best anime games on PC 2022

The best anime games for PC are as wildly varied as the Japanese film, television, and manga from which they are inspired. Whether you fancy being trapped in a school with a sadistic remote-controlled bear, defending yourself from gargantuan humanoid monsters, or joining a book club with a dark side, there are plenty of anime games for PC to choose from in 2022.

We’ve got everything from the biggest games based on Japan’s hottest export shows, through the finest JRPGs, to anime MMOs influenced by the signature anime style. Dragon Ball, Attack on Titan, and Naruto are all present and correct, plus a few other gems you may not have heard of before.

This list is especially good if you’re looking for your fix of this distinctive form of Japanese animation, but find your wallet can’t stretch to full price triple-A releases. If you’re after free anime games, look no further than the charming, vibrant open-world of Genshin Impact or beloved and increasingly popular anime MMO FFXIV, which just received a new expansion called Endwalker.

The best anime games on PC for 2022 are:

Tower of Fantasy

Originally released in China in 2021, since coming to the west in mid-2022, Tower of Fantasy has been very warmly received. Set hundreds of years in the future on the planet Aida where humans have settled after the conditions on the Earth continued to deteriorate, this is an open world action MMO RPG that will keep you occupied for countless hours.

The world of Aida is a beautiful one, containing a range of locales, from dusty mountains, to tropical beaches, and even sprawling futuristic cities. Meanwhile, there’s so much for you to do, from fighting giant monsters, to completing quests for NPCs, and even gathering ingredients to get better at cooking. What makes it even more enjoyable is the fact that you can do all of this alongside your gaming buddies. Since it’s free, it’s definitely worth taking for a spin.

Play Tower of Fantasy for free.

Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact is a free-to-play RPG like almost nothing else we’ve seen. It’s got polish, a solid main story, a gorgeous and activity-packed open world, co-op, cross-play, a relatively unobtrusive paywall, and it’s an anime game. It’s been referred to as anime Breath of the Wild, and while that comparison doesn’t tell the whole story, it does give you a taste of how important the open world is in this game.

As soon as you’re set loose from the tutorial you’ll lose countless hours as the open world pulls in every direction, with camps of enemies to clear out for chests, puzzles to solve using environmental abilities, and resources to craft and cook with. Unlike Breath of the Wild, you can explore the gorgeous world of Teyvat with up to three other friends, too, thanks to cross-play and co-op support.

Play Genshin Impact for free.

Final Fantasy XIV

If you’re looking to scamper around a lovingly crafted open world as a doe-eyed anime protagonist, searching for adventure astride a Chocobo, in one of the most polished and consistently evolving MMOs of all time, look no further than Final Fantasy XIV. The original Final Fantasy XIV was a disappointment, to say the least, but since the remake – A Realm Reborn – launched in 2013, the game has been praised extensively for its endearing story, visual appeal, and innovative approach to class levelling. Instead of needing to make alts to experience the various classes in the game, Final Fantasy XIV allows you to switch your weapon at level 10 and start levelling a different class, allowing you to inhabit whatever role you feel like while still playing as the same adorable character you’ve grown attached to.

Regular updates, as well as larger expansions like Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, have kept fans entertained for years. The game has a lot more to offer than the standard MMO levelling experience, from in-game wedding ceremonies where you can pledge your undying love to a fellow gamer, to Nier: Automata themed content that does a fantastic job of bringing the haunting atmosphere of Square Enix’s mechanical RPG to Final Fantasy XIV.

BATTLE CHEF BRIGADE

Battle Chef Brigade is gorgeously realised cooking game that combines 2D brawler combat against various monsters and a puzzler-based cook off. Essentially, you’ll need to hunt and kill your ingredients before taking them back to the kitchen to whip up a tasty feast. This anime fantasy adventure pits you against other contestants, where you’ll ascend through a high stakes tournament, capturing and preparing your ingredients in front of a panel of judges.

As well as a story mode, Battle Chef Brigade has local multiplayer and various daily challenges including free to play and survival mode, so you can experiment and extend your recipe repertoire. Battle Chef Brigade pairs light RPG progression, an extensive range of monsters and maps, a charming story and beautiful art design to create an anime game to test your cooking chops.

MapleStory

While MapleStory 2 is no longer available outside of Korea, the original MapleStory is still going strong and is available via Steam. This is a side-scrolling 2D MMORPG that lets you build your own custom character from 40 different classes and a near limitless amount of cosmetic items.

Better Together: The best multiplayer games on PC

It also boasts hundreds of hours of epic storylines, with a wide range of settings for you to visit across Maple World. 260 million players from across the world can’t be wrong (probably), so if this sounds like it might be your thing, definitely give it a try. It’s free, after all.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy

We’ve all sat there helplessly as we watch Making a Murderer or The People vs. OJ Simpson, yelling at our screens as we hunger to see justice done. As defendants and plaintiffs alike perspire in the dock, we can only watch on as a hotshot lawyer finds the tiny scrap of crucial evidence mere mortals would miss. Evidence that can mean the difference between liberty and a lifetime in the slammer.

Now we have an anime game that lets us be that star of the courtroom in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy. As our Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy impressions contends, there’s nothing quite like scouring every inch of the case to gather evidence and testing that hard-earned knowledge in a trial, a coliseum of eyes all around you. The joyous melodrama of rookie attorney Phoenix’s big court showdowns plays out like a fighting game, where your incisive arguments and cries of ‘Take that!’ and ‘Hold it!’ strike your opponent into stunned silence.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles

Taking place long before the era of Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles stars Phoenix’s forefather, Ryunosuke Naruhodo, who sets sail to 19th century England from Japan, and is tasked with uncovering the truth behind a series of mysterious happenings.

On his travels, he meets legendary detective Herlock Sholmes – though he’s based on Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous protagonist, Sholmes is not quite as shrewd; fortunately, Ryunosuke is there to help him sift through the facts. With all the wit and eccentricity of the original Ace Attorney games, Chronicles is a must-play for visual novel fans and budding detectives.

Dragon Quest XI

In Dragon Quest XI, you play as a young man who discovers that he is the reincarnation of a legendary hero and sets off on a journey to solve the mysteries of his past. For both anime and videogames this is pretty standard fare, but this narrative acts as the bedrock for Dragon Quest XI’s tense turn-based battles and innumerable side quests.

Dragon Quest XI has retained some amazing talent throughout the years, such as beloved manga and anime artist Akira Toriyama, who is known for the Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball series. Toriyama has designed the characters since Dragon Quest’s first release back in 1986, his bright and colourful designs imbuing the magical world of these anime games with personality and character for over two decades now. They’re exceptionally gorgeous games, which is attested by some very high Dragon Quest XI review scores.

Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom

We looked jealously on as our console cousins enjoyed the whimsical delights of Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch but, now, all is forgiven. The sequel might be without the original Ni no Kuni’s Studio Ghibli, but the faster Ni no Kuni II gameplay ensures that Level-5 have finally brought one of the best anime games to PC.

This time you don the finery of deposed child king Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum. The devilish rodent that is Otto Mausinger is running the show in the idyllic society of Ding Dong Dell now and you’re going to need a number of ways to take back your Ni no Kuni II kingdom.

Besides overwhelming your foes in large scale Ni no Kuni II RTS battles, the best way to do this is start a new one. This is where Evermore comes in, your new civilisation that you can build from the ground up by recruiting specialists from across this beautiful anime world. And, Higgledies are the cutest little critters in any anime game, don’t @ us.

Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2

We could not put together an anime list without mentioning Dragon Ball. Xenoverse 2 is one of the best anime games for PC, and a fantastic addition to the famous series. If you are looking for an ambitious MMO-lite title with an authentic, fan-service-filled story that slots nicely into the DBZ canon, look no further than this stellar anime game.

Xenoverse 2 sees you flying around expansive landscapes and taking on quests with other players with a view to building your power. Series favourites pluck you out of the sky to engage in frenetic arena brawls, forcing you to experiment with a wide range of special abilities.

Dragon Ball FighterZ

Not only one of the best anime games, but also one of the finest fighting games ever made, Dragon Ball FighterZ is a love letter to the characters of everyone’s favourite show. Its fantastic graphical style makes every punch, kick, and spirit ball look like it was taken straight from the anime, resulting in the most authentic-looking Dragon Ball game to date.

The game features a huge roster of characters, which we run down in our Dragon Ball FighterZ character guide. No matter if Piccolo, Goku, or Buu is your favourite, everyone is accounted for here. And with easy to understand controls, there is nothing stopping you from getting involved.

Attack on Titan

The attractive art style of Attack on Titan sits nicely alongside the best anime games for PC. Fans of the manga and the TV show will feel right at home here as they boost and swing around cities, forests, and the game’s titular Titans.

The premise, of course, is decidedly less appealing, at first. Developers Omega Force thrust you into the shoes of Eren as he and his companions scrap legions of massive, but mindless, naked humanoid giants with a penchant for devouring human flesh – Titans, in other words. The story in this anime game fits well with the established canon as you get to slashing some Titan necks.

Tales of Symphonia

Originally a GameCube title, this anime game graced the PC with its charming presence in 2016. If you missed it, all you need to know is that it is a classic that could rank among the best RPGs on PC.

Tales of Symphonia is set in the world of Sylvarant, hanging in the balance amidst an overwhelming evil and steadily depleting mana. But legend has it that a Chosen One (in other words, you) will one day rise and bring their homeland back from the brink.

This fifth instalment is not only the strongest in the Tales series, but one of the best anime games on PC. Symphonia’s gameplay is centred on a classic real-time battle system, allowing you to experiment with many and various techniques, spells, and strategies. This is a tale that you will remember long after the end credits.

Doki Doki Literature Club PLUS!

There is little more wholesome than a book club. Hundreds of thousands of words – and the odd knock-off DVD – infinitely expand our horizons, transporting young and old to all sorts of new worlds. The Doki Doki Literature Club!, on the other hand, “is not suitable for children or those who are easily disturbed.

Don’t be fooled by the cute exterior of Team Salvato’s band of bookworms as this visual novel has a number of distressingly dark layers hidden beneath. When Doki Doki Literature Club! hit Steam in September 2017, it quickly became a surprise cult hit with over two million downloads, recognised as one of the best anime games for PC thanks to its arresting, emotive narrative – one that’s best not spoiled. The “Plus!” version expands the original with a helping of new content. If you have a free few hours and a hardy disposition, make sure you give this anime game a go.

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair

Most of us, at some point, have wished to be one of those special kids plucked from their ordinary surroundings to attend a famous school. Usually it’s Hogwarts, admittedly. But, for Hajime Hinata – Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair’s protagonist – he realises his dream to attend Hope’s Peak Academy, a prestigious school for ‘Ultimate’ pupils.

It is at this point that this anime game transforms into something far darker: your classroom melts away into what appears to be a tropical island, once you are introduced to your teacher, Usami. Usami is also a pink bunny. Yeah.

Its zany story aside, it is the equally weird set of characters and engaging investigative gameplay that puts Danganronpa 2 up there with the best anime games for PC.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Full Burst

Naruto Shippuden is the ultimate manga superhero fantasy, with books, TV, and anime games galore. That said, you’ll have a hard time fully grasping the story of Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Full Burst if you don’t have wide knowledge of the canon. But, if you take the time to dive into this sprawling anime series – or just like punching things as an incredibly cool ninja – you’ll find one of the best anime games for PC.

This Bandai Namco fighting game is similar in structure to its predecessor, Ultimate Ninja Storm 2, so you can expect to scrap your way through a 12-hour story that explores classic Naruto themes such as friendship and brotherhood. In an interesting spin on the wider narrative, ‘Ultimate Decision’ moments are forks in the road that allow you to either follow or diverge from events lifted from the canon.

Either side of fighting you can engage in some JRPG-lite objectives like taking on side-quests, shopping, and item collecting. Undoubtedly the most complete Naruto game, this is an anime game that is not to be missed.

And there you go – the best anime games on PC. There’s plenty in this to keep you occupied if this kind of Japanese animation style is your thing, but it’d be remiss of us not to give you even more games to bulk out your pile of shame.

If you’ve liked what you’ve seen here, you should take a look at the best MMOs on PC and the free MMOs you should be getting your hands on. There’s also plenty of crossover between this list and our rundown of the best robot games on PC, so head there for some more picks. That should leave you with plenty to be getting on with – check back in with us when you’re all done a few lifetimes from now.

The best anime games on PC

We’ve put together this list of the best anime games on PC to help you figure out which ones you absolutely shouldn’t miss, because there sure are a lot of them—videogames adapted from specific anime shows and movies, as well as videogames more broadly inspired by the medium.

It makes sense for there to be a lot of overlap between anime and games. Many character designers, writers, and voice actors work in both industries at once. Plus, there are plenty of game designers who grew up on Ghost in the Shell or Pokémon and went on to draw on that influence in their videogame work.

Dragon Ball FighterZ

Why you can trust PC Gamer
Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test.

Release date: 2018 | Developer: Arc System Works | Steam

No game looks like an Arc System Works game. The company has perfected the combination of 3D and 2D animation with flashy fighting games like Guilty Gear and Blazblue, but the best example is Dragon Ball FighterZ. It turns brawls into proper anime battles, making sure you always see the best angle when you pull off a ridiculous move. And that’s why it’s the absolute best anime fighting game.

Not only is it beginner-friendly, DBFZ also makes you feel as powerful as no other fighting game, thanks to the anime factor—in Dragon Ball, throwing a foe into space or hitting them hard enough to take out most of the surrounding landscape are regular occurrences. Thanks to Arc’s stunning animation, FighterZ looks just like—if not better—than the original.

Tekken 7

Release date: 2017 | Developer: Bandai Namco Studios | Steam

Tekken 7 has assists and autocombos, but enabling them takes away buttons you need for other moves. It’s not real beginner-friendly. Tekken 7 expects you to learn punishes and staple combos, to pay attention to frame data. (The fact it then sells frame data display as DLC is ridiculous, of course.) It’s honest about its difficulty though, treating story mode as a tutorial because it knows most people play story mode to learn how to play. Well, that and to watch over-the-top cutscenes where Heihachi kicks missiles back at the people who shot them.

Developed for PC, and with a boisterously thriving online community dedicated to the platform, Tekken 7 is a fighting game worth dedicating hours and hours of your life to. At least until Tekken 8 comes along.

Tales of Vesperia – Definitive Edition

Release date: 2019 | Developer: Bandai Namco | Steam

Bandai Namco’s Tales series has introduced us to plenty of worlds that need saving since 1995’s Tales of Phantasia, but Tales of Vesperia, originally released as an Xbox 360 exclusive in 2008, stands out thanks to the way it hits that old school JRPG sweet spot. Its protagonists are a group of lovable misfits who for the most part just happen across each other, the battle system is a mix between turn-based and real-time, and there’s a traditional kaleidoscopic fantasy world to explore.

Tales of Vesperia also features fairly classic 2D visuals, with characters designed by mangaka Kousuke Fujishima and cutscenes by popular animation studio Production I.G. But more than just the visuals, it’s the feeling of a grand adventure in faraway lands complete with everything from pirates to dragons and mysterious magical forces that makes Tales of Vesperia such a great JRPG.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

Release date: 2019 | Developer: Level-5 | Steam

With Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch a game finally captured the trademark charm of Studio Ghibli. The makers of such beloved movies as My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away were involved in Ni No Kuni’s creation, producing its animated cutscenes. And while Ni No Kuni wasn’t written by anyone at Ghibli, Akihiro Hino, who worked on games such as Dark Cloud, Dragon Quest 8 and 9, and the Professor Layton series, managed to hit the same heartwarming notes.

Ni No Kuni works for both children and adults in exactly the same way as many Studio Ghibli movies, telling fairytales in which young heroes gain the power to save multiple worlds—mostly by cramming loads of food into their mouths, capturing weird critters, and then rushing off into peril.

When you’re done with Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch you can move on to Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom. Although Studio Ghibli wasn’t involved in creating the sequel it retains the distinctive animation style.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade

Release date: 2021 (PC) | Developer: Square Enix | Steam , Epic

Sure, recent years have buried us in remakes. Don’t let that put you off Final Fantasy 7 Remake, though. It may look like a retelling of disc one’s cyberpunk fable of a stratified city only with a more action-y combat system and some Akira-style motorbike chases thrown in, but the way it plays with your expectations and twists the story it knows you’re anticipating is cleverer than you’d think. The combat’s not the pure action it looks like either. The combos are just something you do to build up bars you need to cast spells and use abilities, dropping the world into slow-motion as you dig through menus for the attacks that do more than just chip damage.

Need your anime games to look their best? Here are the best gaming PCs right now.

Think of Remake more like a verb than a noun. FF7R is about a struggle to remake the city of Midgar, the slum-protecting ecoterrorists of Avalanche trying to get rid of its reliance on the planet’s lifestream for power and the Shinra Corporation trying to manipulate Midgar into a war they can profit from. Meanwhile, another force is out there trying to remake the familiar plot playing out against this backdrop. It’s got layers, man. Just like the city.

While you’re looking at fantasy of the final variety, don’t go past Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age. Its gambit system gives it some of the best combat the series has ever had, and the PC remaster comes with improvements like a fast-forward button to double or even quadruple the speed to help you get through the slower bits.

The best open world anime games

Nier: Automata

Release date: 2017 | Developer: PlatinumGames | Steam

If you see the protagonist of Nier Automata out of context you might take her for one of the sexy body-pillow babes that give anime and its fans a bit of a bad rap (sometimes deservedly so, but that’s a different story). But how many anime babes do you know who transform into fighter jets? How many of them efficiently hack and slash their way through hordes of enemies? OK, actually quite a few, but how many of those are also grappling with the fact they’re machines built for a never-ending war?

Nier Automata isn’t just a hack-and-slash. It’s also a deep dive into what it means to have free will, about the meaning of war and whether ignorance can help us stay sane. It’s heavy stuff, masterfully showing the other side of anime. It’s not all bright colors and cute girls. Sometimes it’s about the horrors of war… and cute girls.

If you want to go back to the start of the series, The 2010 original was remastered and finally released on PC as Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139… in 2021.

Code Vein

Release date: 2019 | Developer: Bandai Namco Studios | Steam

Sometimes more really is more, and Bandai Namco’s soulslike Code Vein is a great example of that. Its world has fallen prey to vampire-like monsters that can emit a deadly miasma, and you’re among a group of young, stylish, superpowered people trying to get the monster population under control using massively oversized weapons. As is so often the case with anime games, a simple description of the things that happen doesn’t make much sense. That’s part of Code Vein’s charm.

While it wants to be compared with the Souls games, Code Vein is a lot more approachable, as well as being different stylistically. Unlike the quiet, dark atmosphere of Dark Souls, it feels like a shonen anime—the kind where characters solve a lot of problems via fast-paced, acrobatic combat.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy

Release date: 2019 | Developer: Capcom | Steam

As Phoenix Wright, it’s your job to prove your client’s innocence in the courtroom, which you’ll need to do by cross-examining witnesses and searching crime scenes for clues. You know, like a regular lawyer definitely does.

There’s drama and there’s murder, but Ace Attorney is rarely grim. These are games where anything is possible—and things never turn out the way you expect them to. When you put on your bright blue suit you’ve got to be ready to interrogate the witness’s pet parrot if it turns out to be necessary. (It will turn out to be necessary.)

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy collects the first three games in the series, while The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles bundles together two prequels set in the Victorian era starring an ancestor of Phoenix Wright who teams up with the great detective ‘Herlock Sholmes’.

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

Release date: 2016 | Developer: Spike Chunsoft | Steam

If the psychics, ghosts, and sexy clowns of the Phoenix Wright games are just too staid and serious for you, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc takes the formula and makes it even more ridiculous. The setting is a school for exceptional students where the latest intake of talented young people wake to find they’ve been trapped in the sealed-up academy with a talking robot bear.

Said bear explains that they’re all taking part in what sounds like a social experiment, and will only be allowed to leave if they kill each other and get away with it. If one student murders another there’s an investigation-by-trial, and if the killer isn’t uncovered the murderer goes free while everyone else is executed. If the killer is uncovered, they’re the one executed and the other students remain trapped. Until the next murder happens, when it all plays out again.

Some of the mysteries are better than others, but they’re always tense thanks to a system that sees clues you gather during the investigation phase transformed into «truth bullets» to shoot at statements those clues contradict. There are other minigames involved in the trials too, and like the mysteries some are better than others. (You can always tweak the difficulty if you don’t get on with them.) What elevates Danganronpa is its characters and atmosphere: exaggerated, colorful, and weird as anything.

Though it tells a standalone story, Trigger Happy Havoc has had follow-ups. They’re not worth it, however, falling immediately into fanservice and cliché while leaning even more on minigames. You’re better off sticking with the original.

Zero Escape: The Nonary Games

Release date: 2017 | Developer: Spike Chunsoft | Steam

Another option for watching outrageous characters fight and outwit each other in order to survive is the Zero Escape series. Originally handheld puzzlers, the first two games in the series (Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Virtue’s Last Reward) were combined together as Zero Escape: The Nonary Games and finally ported to PC in 2017, getting a graphical update over the DS original and some other new features.

The Nonary Games are two of the best anime thrillers you can play; tense and tricky escape room puzzles combined with a story that ruthlessly pits protagonists against each other. A combination of visual novel and first-person puzzle, you truly won’t see what’s coming, and you should really experience it for yourself.

The best free anime games

Release date: 2017 | Developer: Konami | Steam

This free-to-play card game is a fun way to relive the times you dueled friends—and the time you invested all that money in pricey cards. The Yu-Gi-Oh! anime was basically just an exciting, half-hour ad for an expensive card game, but don’t worry, this time it won’t cost you quite as much.

The Duel Links community is a big, competitive place, with regular events and seasons. There’s also a story mode making this a full-fledged game. There are microtransactions, but you can earn plenty of rewards without having to spend money. More importantly, the presentation is really good, with simple but effective animations and the original voice actors.

As well as Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links, there’s also Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, which is a more faithful adaptation of the original card game. That means the turn times are longer and there are more counters and combos. Duel Links uses the speed duel format, and feels like the game they played when you were watching the show.

Crush Crush

Release date: 2016 | Developer: Sad Panda | Steam , Nutaku

Crush Crush and Hush Hush, its counterpart on the masculine side, turn dating sims into idle games. (Several of the developers worked on the hugely successful AdVenture Capitalist before turning their hands to smut.) You meet a cast of cuties and win their hearts with moonlight strolls, showers of gifts, and outrageous flirting while managing a limited number of time blocks to work multiple jobs and build your skills. Those cuties include a mecha pilot, a time traveler, a holographic vocaloid, and a bear named ‘Bearverley’, because why not?

The best anime games with character creation

Black Desert

Release date: 2017 | Developer: Pearl Abyss | Steam

This popular fantasy MMO has one of the most in-depth selections of sliders around. Whether you want to adjust your hair’s length or curl strength, or tamper with the intensity of your tattoos, Black Desert Online has you covered. It’s easy to use too, breaking your face and body up into a topographic map of adjustable sections and letting you change your hair by clicking and dragging

You can also look through the Beauty Album to see what looks other players are creating for their corsairs, berserkers, and dark knights, then filter them by categories like Good Looks, Celebrity, and Ugly. You can either adopt someone else’s character design wholesale or tweak it to your preference. Tweaking is best, because if you hit the ‘Apply Most Popular’ button on a female character there’s a strong chance you’ll end up looking like a goth clown with gigantic boobs.

Read more: Black Desert Online isn’t a great MMO, but it is a great sandbox RPG

Lost Ark

Release date: 2022 | Developer: Smilegate RPG | Steam

Though it doesn’t have quite as powerful a set of options as Black Desert, and you can only alter your face rather than your body, Lost Ark still has a lot of options for personalizing your character. For instance, it lets you alter your iris size, color, and opacity separately from your eye color and pupil shape, and then do it all differently for the other eye.

When you finally make it out of the character creator and past the typically slow opening hours almost every MMO seems required to have, it’s a much better game. The over-the-top action-RPG combat is some of the best around, and the storylines get progressively stranger until you find yourself taking part in dwarf musicals in between fighting on top of colossal demons.

The best anime VR games

VRChat

Release date: 2017 | Developer: VRChat Inc. | Steam , Oculus

In theory you can look like whoever or whatever your heart desires in the shared digital world of VRChat. In practice, there’s a reason every single article about someone’s experience in VRChat includes the phrase «anime girls». Heck, even the official mascot Box Cat (a cat with a cardboard box on its head) has been sidelined in favor of a variety of big-eyed avatars in the official art.

Though it does struggle with lag, VRChat has become the place to live out your anime second life. Perhaps in the waffle house on the moon.

Of course, before moving your social life to VRChat full-time you’ll need the perfect avatar. Or maybe you want to become a Vtuber without having to pay thousands of dollars? Anime online games for PC

This collection is made for those who like anime online games. Following the adventures of popular heroes on the screen is one thing, but personally looking into every corner of your beloved world is quite another. Some mmorpg anime are based on well-known series, others simply borrow their graphic style. One thing remains unchanged in them — bright, saturated colors, magnificent landscapes and a good atmosphere of fabulous adventures.

Most online role-playing projects exploit fantasy themes that are close to European myths. However, not everyone likes the dominance of bearded gnomes, harsh orcs and dense elves. Anime-style MMORPGs are a big competitor to traditional games. Big eyes, all this “kawaii” and “cuteness”, cartoonish graphics and bright colors have a huge and incomprehensible power over millions of gamers. Coming from Japan, the anime style quickly conquered South Korea — the main forge of MMOs, and from there began its expansion into Western civilization. As a result, anime online games quickly gained popularity all over the world, and in Asia this style is completely dominant.

The main contender for the title of «best mmorpg anime» today is the Royal Quest project. The game is the ideological continuation of Ragnarok Online, the first anime-style MMORPG. Ragnarok Online came out in 2002 and used mixed graphics (2D and 3D). Landscapes and locations were made in 3D, and all the characters were two-dimensional, sprites. The design of the game was made in the style of «mahanwa» — a type of manga. Royal Quest successfully continued the tradition of the first online anime game. The project combines anime style with Diablo gameplay and is a collection of teenagers with a harmless appearance who non-stop crush herds of monsters. The game features dynamic gameplay, pleasant and unobtrusive graphics and free PvP, which in its mass form is a siege of castles.

The free anime MMORPG Rappelz can seriously compete with Royal Quest. It features an advanced pet system that allows you to turn your helpers from small puppies into huge monsters, as well as hack & slash style gameplay with a combo system that makes the game more like a fighting game or slasher than a classic MMORPG.

In general, online MMORPG anime games are represented by a large number of successful projects. The Fantasium game can be noted, in which, in addition to the huge anime eyes of the characters, the players will find a friendly atmosphere, a bright picture reminiscent of Japanese cartoons, and monsters of all shapes and colors. The project is more focused on the children’s audience, but there are activities for adults as well.

Anime MMORPG games made in 2D projection are also very popular. The same Dragonica, although packed in cartoon graphics, offers its users by no means childish PvP. In it, little big-eyed people look friendly only at first glance. In fact, at the first opportunity, the characters of this game take out huge swords and knives from their wide trousers, and begin an energetic scuffle, the degree of “brutality” of which many adult projects can envy. Many anime online games today have this feature — behind the bright picture and external grandeur lies hardcore PvP, which lacks only severed limbs. However, we still have a long way to go.

Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash

Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash is an online shooter with beautiful anime girls fighting in their swimsuits using all kinds of water weapons. Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet

A solid multiplayer game based on the famous anime universe Sword Art Online. A very complex and intricate plot, a pleasant world to find, an impressive number of characters, a stubborn grind traditional for Asian games — all this is presented here in the best possible way.

Blade & Soul

Eternal Return

Multiplayer isometric MOBA game. A large selection of characters, the ability to independently create weapons and other useful items, grandiose battles involving almost two dozen people — all this makes Eternal Return an attractive anime online game.

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is a multiplayer game from the Phantasy Star Online series that allows thirty-two players to fight in one large location at once, using their own created anime characters. The control of the heroes and the very principle of fighting in Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is very simple, but this does not prevent them from captivating hundreds of thousands of players from all over the world for long tens and hundreds of hours. Pleased with the presence of an advanced character editor that allows you to create a unique character at your discretion.
