Despite the great storytelling mechanics, I can’t help but wish there was a little more to the game. When all was said and done it wrapped up in a handful of hours at most and I was left craving more. It’s especially a let down because the game invents such new ways of thinking about the horror genre, and it left so much to be expanded on. However, I honestly have to applaud the team for delivering a concise and complete story in that amount of time, and one that is so unique to the horror realm at that.

Despite all modern consoles having downloadable content and a flexible online update system, Atlus continues to release individual re-releases, as if remaining in the era of PlayStation 2 . And if the version Full Body of the erotic adventure Catherine looks logical against the background of the changed list of platforms, then Persona 5 Royal for the same PS4 is not the most obvious solution.

However, Atlus has always been known for heavily reworking many aspects of the gameplay, adding story and other important content changes. This time, the developers emphasize that “Royal” did not appear just like that and they tried to invest as much as possible in this reissue. How successful the release turned out to be, we will try to find out in this review.

The first change occurs immediately after starting the game. The opening screensaver is completely different and with new music. Composer Shoji Meguro recorded about twenty additional tracks for the extended edition. In addition, for Persona 5 Royal, the developers created several anime cutscenes and implemented many new scenes in the engine, even outside of the additional story chapter.

Even if you played the original Persona 5, its saves are not fully supported. However, their presence gives a bonus of fifty thousand yen, which is a very useful reward for the second run. This restriction is really necessary, since the new storyline runs parallel to the main branch and allows you to set the stage for a new chapter, which begins after the events of the base story.

In this re-release, Atlus has redesigned and updated many small details that are so harmoniously woven into the game that it seems they have always been there. For example, in conversations, new emotions appeared in portraits, and when the characters speak on the phone, a pulsating frame with a background is added to their avatar, which emphasizes the fact of a remote connection.

Other gameplay changes. Almost from the very beginning, the player is introduced to a new gadget — a hook-cat. It allows you to cling to special ledges in places prepared by the developers and often opens up access to alternative routes and secret locations.

The latter contain seeds that come in different colors and replenish a small amount of mana. Almost every palace now has three of these items — sometimes they are guarded by powerful opponents. By collecting all three, you get a valuable accessory or other useful inventory.

At a certain point, the hook can be used to pull towards enemies from a distance.

You can now change party characters at any time by opening the menu “ Stats «. In addition, the developers allow you to improve your health indicators at the touch of a button, which is very convenient. It is easier for you to explore locations without being interrupted by unnecessary management.

Another novelty offers new combat skills based on team interactions. In the course of the passage, the characters come up with various joint attacks, which can then be implemented in battle. The mechanic is called “ Showtime ” and is activated when certain conditions are met. For example, if the turn passed, the enemy and the main character are immobilized, and someone in the team has little health. The animation looks fun, epic and sometimes surreal. Makoto and Ryuuji are transported to the desert and, against the backdrop of the sunset, beat the enemy with beautiful pirouettes. All this is accompanied by a cinematic change of plans and bright special effects.

It is also worth noting the battles with the owners of the palaces. These bosses have received new phases and skills. So, for example, in the middle of a battle with a physical education teacher, some characters from his volleyball team appear on the arena, which creates additional dialogues and scenes.

Not without new enemies in the game, which you can get to your collection as Personas. In addition, the friends of the protagonist got the opportunity to upgrade their defenders to the third form. They will open in conversations during the passage of a new chapter if your relationship is pumped to the maximum value. The appearance of the new Personas can sometimes resemble the first form, but with a more interesting and original design.

The developers have added a whole new district of Kichijoji to the game, which, in addition to shops, a jazz club and a temple, also has an entertainment center. Here you can play billiards and darts with your friends. The first option involves watching the splash screen and increasing the damage bonus against an immobilized opponent. The second is a full mini-game that uses DualShock 4 gyroscopes for aiming, which is a lot more interesting than it sounds. The main thing in the midst of the competition is not to launch the gamepad into the TV. Each victory raises the level “ Button Pass ”, which strengthens the character who is passed the turn in battle.

Goro Akechi can be found in the same area, the line of which has been slightly changed. It is he who first brings the protagonist to the jazz club. In this institution, they allow you to enhance the characteristics of the Persons of your partners, as well as get other useful effects. Bonuses differ depending on what day of the week you came.

The main character’s studies have been changed. All questions from teachers have been replaced with new ones, but the help of players from the network is still available to you. The function does not work during exams, so you need to carefully approach the study of the material. It is not necessary to use online hints, and the connection to the server can be completely deactivated.

The Mementos Palace has also been updated. In addition to the usual items, flowers and mechanisms can now be found in the vicinity of the sinister subway. They are directly related to one of the new characters — a strange boy named Jose, who meets on locations and gives you special things in exchange for flowers. By activating new mechanisms, you get points for which you can increase the coefficient of three indicators: experience gained, money and items. Unlike flowers, they do not reset when leaving the subway. Also, you are waiting for other changes in the subway, which we will not describe in order not to spoil the impression.

Naturally, Atlus hasn’t forgotten about the new characters. Persona 5 Royal introduced Dr. Maruki, a school counseling teacher and part-time social psychologist, who appears after defeating the first boss. It is so logically woven into the original narrative that it seems strange why it was not originally there.

After several meetings, Maruki asks the protagonist to be his assistant. Money, of course, will not be paid, but Maruki will provide mental support to the hero, which is expressed in an increase in points SP . Improving relations with him, the hero receives not only mana growth, but also various other bonuses. Usually conversations with him are available after school, although scenes with his participation will also occur in the story. These moments are designed to further reveal the characters’ characters and look at them from a different perspective.

Another newcomer is an athlete, Komsomol member and simply beautiful Kasumi Yoshizawa. A red-haired girl with a puffy tail appears almost immediately and becomes the object of gossip no less than the main character. When she is in the frame, everyone around whispers and discusses her achievements in sports, appearance and much more.

At first, the girl seems very simple, largely due to excessive politeness. However, this erroneous impression disappears after several meetings, when the heroine reveals herself from different sides. She will get into the team with the player only in the new chapter, but throughout the basic story campaign, you will intersect and communicate with her from time to time. This approach allowed us to deeply work out the character and make her a truly unique and interesting heroine who wants to empathize.

But the most important innovation is an additional chapter, which the updated game leads to from the very beginning. After a long tie, the story begins to actively move forward immediately after the celebration of the New Year. Almost from the first of January, according to the in-game calendar, the hero notices strange things. We will not describe them, so as not to spoil the impression, however, during the first hour, only one thought flickers in my head: “What, in general, is happening here?”.

Over time, everything becomes clearer, and the plot will take an unexpected turn more than once. The story remains interesting until the very end, revealing more and more new details. It is thanks to this gradual introduction of the second storyline that the player approaches the new chapter completely prepared, and the events do not look divorced from everything else, fitting perfectly into the overall outline of the game world and allowing you to spend even more time with your favorite characters than before.

Persona 5 Royal at first glance seems like a bright teenage adventure with constant jokes, stylish visuals (now in 4K ) and new character costumes. But the story continues to deal with serious and complex topics. The authors keep a fine line between fiction and drama. Royal’s new storyline raises questions about accepting life for what it is. In this chapter, the characters are faced with the manifestation of extreme forms of escapism, the suppression of memories and the forced introduction of happiness to everyone. The latter is very clearly visible in the faceless passers-by on the streets and in the subway, who still look tortured, but at the same time a wide joyful smile appeared on their faces. This is an important message that the writers managed to turn into an interesting story with unexpected twists and intrigues.

As for the new palace, it perfectly emphasizes the plot idea and seems brighter than all the previous ones. Here, even the music departs from the usual funk and jazz-rock motifs, giving way to the measured and soothing sounds of the piano.

Only during the battle, the music returns to the original motives and starts a new song with powerful violin and guitar parts. At these moments, the game seems to wake up from suspended animation, which it enters during the exploration of locations, and then falls back into sleep. The new compositions perfectly complement the great original soundtrack.

Finally, I’ll tell you about another innovation called “ Thieves Den ”. This is a separate application accessible from the game menu. There is a new location where you can play a card game that is vaguely reminiscent of The Fool, and for special points that you earn throughout the game, you can review the screensavers, see the sketches and drawings that the artists made during development. Here you can also listen to music and walk around the neighborhood, controlling any of the characters.

Persona 5 Royal is like a favorite dish prepared according to a new recipe. All the ingredients are recognizable and very pleasant, but a different level of roasting and unexpected spices allow you to discover it from a new side.
