Compared to the AMD Richland family of APUs, the new generation of AMD Kaveri APUs is a big step forward. In addition to the introduction of new AMD Steamroller and AMD GCN microarchitectures, the long-awaited transition to a thinner process technology has taken place. Let’s not forget about adding support for a number of promising technologies, which, in the case of software optimization, will help to significantly increase the speed and functionality of the system. Thus, APUs are becoming more and more real competitors for the processor + discrete graphics card bundle. True, so far we are talking only about entry-level configurations. But considering that it took AMD only three years to achieve this goal, it’s safe to say that the appearance of APUs for systems of a higher class is not far off. nine0003

With so much user interest in APUs, it remains a mystery why the manufacturer doesn’t bring other AMD Kaveri APUs to market. After all, enough time has passed since the announcement of this family, and it is still represented on the market by only two solutions: AMD A10-7850K and AMD A10-7700K. We have already got acquainted with the AMD A10-7700K model, but now we have the opportunity to evaluate the potential of the flagship of the series — the AMD A10-7850K processor .

Packaging, delivery set and standard cooling system

The AMD A10-7850K APU comes in a small box, designed in the red and black colors of the AMD Kaveri series. The inscription «Black Edition» reminds that this model has an unlocked multiplier, and hence a certain overclocking potential.

From the sticker text you can find out the processor speed in turbo mode (4.0 GHz), L2 cache size (4 MB), number of processing cores (12: 4 CPU + 8 GPU), integrated graphics core series (AMD Radeon R7 Graphics ), as well as the presence of a standard cooler in the delivery set. The sides briefly describe the capabilities of AMD hUMA technology and the AMD GCN microarchitecture. nine0003

The box contains: user manual, cooler and the processor itself, packed in a plastic blister for additional protection. There you can also find a sticker with the AMD APU series logo.

The standard cooling system for the AMD A10-7850K processor is the same as that of the previously reviewed AMD A10-7700K, which is explained by the same TDP level (95 W) of both solutions. The cooler consists of a low-profile heatsink, which is blown by a low-profile 70mm fan. The design of the radiator is extremely simple: an aluminum core with four sections of plates. A layer of thermal paste has already been applied to the base. nine0003

Heating of the AMD A10-7850K processor in the downtime

AMD A10-7850K processor at the maximum load

in practice, the standard cooling system has proven itself quite well. In idle mode, the processor temperature did not rise above 27°C, and at maximum load — above 45°C. In the latter case, the fan speed reached 2500 rpm. At the same time, the noise from it was at a comfortable level, although it still stood out from the rest of the system components. The maximum fan speed is 3500 rpm. nine0003

Appearance and technical specifications

Externally, the AMD A10-7850K APU is no different from the previously considered solution from the AMD Kaveri family. The heat-distributing cover bears the name of the series and the marking of the model. The countries where the crystal was grown (Germany) and where the final assembly of the processor took place (Malaysia) are also indicated.

Pin arrangement on the rear side corresponds to the Socket FM2+ processor socket. Recall that the AMD Kaveri APU family is not compatible with Socket FM2. nine0003

All prices for AMD+A10-7850K

In normal mode (AMD Turbo Core 3.0 technology disabled), the AMD A10-7850K is 3700 MHz with a base frequency of 100 MHz and a x37 multiplier. At the time of taking the readings, the voltage on the core was 1.392 V.

If you use the dynamic boost mode using proprietary Turbo Core 3.0 technology, the multiplier increases by three points to the value of «40». The processor speed accordingly increases to 4000 MHz, but interestingly, the supply voltage does not change. At the time of fixing the readings, its value was even slightly lower (1.384 V) than in the previous case.

In idle mode, the multiplier is reduced to the value «x17», thus the frequency drops to 1700 MHz. The voltage in this case is 0.744 V. As you can see, the operation of the power saving mechanism in the AMD A10-7850K APU has been slightly improved compared to the flagship of the previous AMD Richland family. Recall that in the absence of load, the AMD A10-6800K multiplier dropped to the value of «x20», and the supply voltage — to the level of 0.888 V.

AMD A10-7850K cache is allocated in the same way as AMD A10-7770K: associativity channels and for each 2-core module — 96 KB for instructions with 3 associativity channels;

  • L2 cache: 2 MB for each 2-core module with 16 associativity channels;
  • No L3 cache. nine0520

    The DDR3 memory controller operates in dual-channel mode and is guaranteed to support modules up to 2133 MHz.

    The AMD A10-7850K uses the AMD Radeon R7 Graphics series. Without the exact name, there is a little confusion, since the AMD A10-7700K APU also has AMD Radeon R7 Graphics installed, but with different characteristics.

    It’s no secret that the main reason for the great popularity of AMD APUs is their powerful graphics. Understanding this, AMD is constantly improving its features and performance. A big step in this regard was taken with the advent of the AMD Kaveri family, when the transition of the iGPU to the advanced AMD GCN microarchitecture took place. Recall that it is she who underlies all modern AMD Volcanic Islands video cards. nine0003

    However, when creating the AMD A10-7850K processor, the manufacturer went even further. Compared to the AMD A10-6800K, in addition to changing the microarchitecture, the graphics core of the flagship AMD Kaveri APU family received an additional 128 universal shader pipelines. The only parameter in which AMD Radeon R7 Graphics is inferior to AMD Radeon HD 8670D (iGPU model AMD A10-6800K) is the clock speed — 720 MHz versus 844 MHz.

    However, judging by the information provided by the AMD press center, this does not prevent the AMD A10-7850K from confidently outperforming the AMD A10-6800K in all modern games. In addition, let’s not forget that thanks to the introduction of shared system memory (AMD hUMA technology) and heterogeneous queue (AMD hQ technology), AMD A10-7850K processor graphics cores, of which there are 8, can work more closely in conjunction with 4 processor cores and perform some of their tasks more effectively.
