10 years ago this would have been good, but not great.
Age of empires 4 is a game out of time. In reality it’s a reimagining of the second game on the core series, AOE2. It’s not a true sequel and lacks much of what I’d expect from a modern sequel.
The graphics are okay, the presentation is okay, definitely reminds me of the history based games we saw 20 years ago. But if I wanted a 20 year old strategy game then I’d play one.
I can’t help but feel disappointed. Age of Empires 2 felt like a game trying to reach for its grand title. Age of Empires 3 felt like it was trying to justify the Empire tag, with all its dark colonial exploitation. Age of empires 4 feels like a village builder. You’re not powerful, or an empire. You don’t feel the ages as strongly either. It’s quite frankly a bit of a disappointing mess.
It strikes me that either the Devs forgot this was a sequel, or perhaps hoped to cash in on nostalgia before it’s players discovered in the second hour of gameplay that this is just AOE2, with a little more shine, and hills. I just don’t care enough about the changes. They’re tiny and you’ll look over them immediately, because there is no impact.
It’s not a bad game, because age of empires 2 isn’t a bad game. But it’s nothing more. A tiny fraction of what 3 innovated on, 4 has kept. We’re talking tiny slithers, trade routes. It’s not enough, unjustifiably so. I’d recommend you try if you have game pass on PC. But it’s not worth even half its price tag, I’d maybe pay £10?
I was at secondary school when AOE2 was released. I was at college for AOE3. Decades later I’m a grown man that’s experienced a whole world of exploration and excitement. AOE4 just cannot keep up with that. The world has changed a great deal, so has technology. AOE4 may as well be Monopoly. We’ve all played a better alternative priced at half the price.

Age of Empires 4 builds greatly on the series’ reputation that began in 1997. If you’re a fan of RTS games, world history, or both, this should be an easy recommendation. With dozens of hours of campaign play, eight unique civilizations, hours of live docu-style video segments, and a ton of maps for skirmishes, there’s no shortage of well-polished content to enjoy.

Age of Empires IV feels like some necessary fresh air that manages to maintain the essence of the classics without too much innovation. At the same time, it is actually a step forward towards what the community has been asking for in the last few years. The series is back with the utmost care by Relic Entertainment, displaying a commendable work like not many others. AOE is back once again.

A well-crafted and complete title, capable of offering exactly what one expects from a modern RTS. While it has some weak points, like simplifying some of the series’ core micromanagement, in the end it offers a solid experience which should not go unnoticed by fans of the genre.

An engrossing tapestry of warfare and scheming throughout the ages, Age Of Empires 4 firmly secures its position as a must-play for strategy fans. Full of sandbox-fuelled drama and interesting campaigns, the game captures the sweeping and costly scale of warfare in a way that few titles manage.

Fans who have been waiting for more Age of Empires or a good RTS that doesn’t feel like it had to be developed on a shoestring budget will find what they’re looking for in Age of Empires IV.

Age of Empires IV is clearly a very good strategy game, which should not disappoint fans of the franchise. With its graphical renewal, the focus on History and its very good artistic direction, we have in our hands a good entry of Age of Empires. However, we may regret that the game is a bit too academic and without any real risk. But still, Age of Empires IV is a very good game.

While there is nothing especially groundbreaking about Age of Empires 4’s formula, it should manage to scratch a very particular nostalgic itch for fans and offer a starting point for beginners to begin their own journey through history.

First of all, sorry for my English.

I’ve been playing strategy games since I was little. It has always been my favorite genre and the one that I have enjoyed the most games.
Among the video games I have played (and mostly completed) you can find Empire Earth, Praetorians, Crusaders, Total War, Tzar, Ground Control, LOTR: The Battle for the middle earth, Starcraft 2, etc. And I am in these comments because in its day, I played AoE, and its 2nd and 3rd, and the magnificent Age of Mythology.
Some time ago I found out that this installment would come out and 2 days ago I started playing wanting to be surprised and get excited about these games again. After these days, I find myself a lazy game, with few civilizations and a difference between the units and their upgrades. We will all remember the units from AoE 2, I think all of them were recognizable, along with the buildings and some of their animations and this is one of the things that the game does not achieve. It also has few multiplayer options and few possible strategies, since after all, we all usually play in a very similar way.
For my taste, they have not struck a good balance between units, factions or buildings. It does not manage to create different games, or exciting battles.
I think that the people who defend this game the most, do not remember much what other games offered, which for my taste, were superior in many characteristics. For my part, I still feel that no one can match what American Conquest did in his day in gameplay, tactics, civilizations, units, even use of resources.
I just hope they keep improving and completing this game. Still, enjoy.… Expand
