Being a bit soft on the narrative is a sin that many games commit, and while I’m generally a big story guy, 7th Dragon III: Code VFD performs so fantastically in all other aspects that I can’t scold it for not making me examine the human condition. For players who want an excellent RPG-lite or a nonstandard dungeon crawler, this game is the total package—it’s got some of the most entertaining mechanics I’ve seen in years, it’s as smooth as butter to play, and everything about it oozes polish. It’s not only going to be one of the best 3DS games released this year, but one of the best 3DS titles overall.

With top-class character customization, a delightfully different combat system and a slick nature-futuristic style, 7th Dragon III Code: VFD is a fantastic addition to the 3DS’ JRPG library.

This is one of those games that won’t get much attention, but it’s a great RPG, with good characters and engaging gameplay. Even if you didn’t play other episodes, it’s worth a try.

That said, there is definitely an audience for this game, and those folks will absolutely love every second of Code: VFD. So with that in mind, I can feel good about giving the game a somewhat hesitant recommendation. It won’t please everyone, but if any of this sounds good to you, Code: VFD is a worthy purchase.

A solid dungeon crawler, affected by some technical issues and a tasteless plot.

Even with some of the issues that mean it might only be for JRPG fans – especially the dungeon crawling monotony, this is, nonetheless, yet another feather for the JRPG cap for the Nintendo 3DS, and represents yet another reason to settle in with your 3DS for dozens of hours of fantasy fun.

It’s difficult to recommend 7th Dragon III: Code VFD. The unique class and party systems are watered down by mundane structure and generally low game difficulty. Story beats are either too predictable or lessened by a connection to other games most English players haven’t experienced. Those who are fans of turn-based class systems can still find enjoyment here, but it’s hard to see the game leaving any lasting impact.

For me personally I like it a lot, I like that the agent class can hack enemies and do stuff to them even though they’re hacking a plant or a bug and it doesn’t really make sense. I like that one of the tank classes is an unarmed class that heals people with chiropractic moves, all of this feels like a massive departure from your bog standard boring «warrior, rogue, mage» archetypes and not in a «we call our warriors ‘agarbib’ » sort of way.
The writing is very 90’s JRPG as well, walking around and talking to NPC’s it feels like this was a remake of something from back then and I love it. To be more specific when you talk to an NPC its fairly clear that somebody somewhere had a little story for them that isn’t in the game and possibly nobody will ever see, but you feel like if you talked to the developer they would know that NPC even if they only ever had one line in the entire game.
That’s the feeling I get from this that I think is sorely lacking in say the Etrian Oddesy series which I feel is sort of a lifeless foray into what feels too much like a graph paper dungeon. As opposed to a world that you can feel effort was put into like this.… Expand -

Some of the characters aren’t that great, but the ones that are make the entire game well worth it. The fighting is also a lot of fun and puzzles are all well done. They managed to take the rather complicated topic of time travel and make a great game out of it, but those few characters that aren’t that great prevent the game from being perfect, and sometimes part of the story is a little confusing. Other than that, everything is great, and if you didn’t play it back when it released, you should try and find it. It’s a great title.… Expand

The first — and probably last — of the 7th dragon games that we’ll ever get, since that this is the final game in the installment out of 4,The first — and probably last — of the 7th dragon games that we’ll ever get, since that this is the final game in the installment out of 4, with the first 1 being a DS game and the next ones PSP games. With that said I always had an interest in this series and even though I love EO a lot for its complexity, I loved this game just as equally if not more in certain areas.
The game starts simple: you’re basically becoming a dragon hunter and your job is to hunt dragons, the true dragons to be specific, in order to complete an item called the Dragon Chronicle…everything else is basically the slice of life. In fact the plot is pretty weak and starts off with nothing really of interest: it’s only at chapter 6 that the plot changes DRASTICALLY, and I do mean it: the tone switches, the story becomes more serious and…it gets really depressing. I won’t spoil it but I did not see it coming but unfortunately, it makes the game hard to swallow because the first 5 chapters of the game (ignoring the transitions) are very bland and uninteresting and waiting 10-20 hours for the plot to become good is a flaw in my book.
On top of that, the game is just too easy: I played the game on normal and it was very easy to rush through as I never had to farm enemies or even needed to grind points, as the dragons (F.O.E.s from EO basically) are super weak and give tons of exp and skill points. However considering they’re many (around 250) and they’re required for upgrading anything, from skills to features in the company, I take it that the low difficulty of the dragons is to compensate their quantity. It wouldn’t be fun to waste half an hour on each of them now, would it?
Another thing worth noting is that the classes aren’t…exactly well defined in terms of roles: the god hand, for example, is a healer but also a tank, while the mage is a caster (duh!) but also one of the best healers and the agent is a debuffer but also a long range attacker. They’re not as mystifying as in EO3 or anything but when you get certain skills going, you might notice the true potential.
In addition, you can have up to 9 characters in your part: 3 groups of 3 people, with one in the front guard and the other 6 as supports and these are really needed for debuffing enemies from their boosted attacks.
With that all said and done, what I love of this game is how there’s a story to follow AND how your characters are actually showing on screen — and in 3d no less — while EO resorts to the old style of first person view with 2 static images and, especially on the DS, the enemies wouldn’t even more and only flash. I get it that it’s a stylistic choice but I’m going with 7th dragon here because I LOVE seeing my characters interacting like that and having other npcs to talk with. On top of that the story is much more of a focal point and doesn’t disappear like in EO and while both games have good stories, 7th dragon just felt more cohesive and never let it go — even if it’s not very strong in the first hours.
So, do I recommend this game? Absolutely: the game is short (finished in about 35 hours due to slacking), it’s fun enough and while easy it’s not «that» easy to avoid tactics: some bosses can kill you quite easily if you’re not careful. Top it all off with a slow yet good story and a roster of characters that are cheesy but not hateable, you get a pretty good package.
Shame we probably won’t see a new game anymore as the second ending hinted to a possible sequel…… Expand

Review: 7th Dragon III Code: VFD – Destructoid
I just wanted to preface this review by once again providing a eulogy of sorts for imageepoch. I did it for Stella Glow, its last major release, and I’m doing it again for 7th Dragon III Code: VFD.
Yes, the latter was technically developed by Sega, but several members of imageepoch worked on it, and they created the series after all. It’s also confirmed to be the last game in the franchise, and one of the last remnants of their legacy.
7th Dragon III Code: VFD (3DS)
Developer: Sega
Publisher: Sega
Released: October 15, 2015 (JP), July 12, 2016 (NA)
MSRP: $39.99
When I first dove into 7th Dragon, I immediately recognized it for what it was: a highly customizable dungeon crawler. You know the ones — the games that allow you to choose your mostly silent protagonist’s appearance and class from the get-go, along with the rest of a custom-built party? It’s the kind of experience that stat-hounds will love, as it allows you to truly role-play and control your entire team.
As a result, the story is ancillary. Set in the year 2100, it follows the tale of the Nodens Corporation’s attempt to stop the awakening of the 7th Dragon, “VFD,” which will result in the extinction of mankind. To train for this upcoming apocalypse, people are tested through seemingly innocent VR machines of sorts to see if they have potential to fight off the incoming threat, like a Last Starfighter-type recruitment tool. Predictably you and your crew are chosen and have the full backing of Nodens in your quest.
It’s a cool little world and I dig its vibe. Ninjas inhabit neon playgrounds of the sci-fi future and don’t feel out of place, for instance. But the more I played the more familiar elements I saw, and started to realize that a lot of it did blend together. The mostly electronica soundtrack fits the theme, but most people probably couldn’t identify a single song in a lineup. Similarly, the dragons look intimidating, but too familiar (as a note, 3D effects are not supported).
A silent protagonist would have also been cool if you could make interesting choices, but you really can’t. Any question posed generally just has two (weakly written) options, both of which have the same end result. 7th Dragon‘s dialogue can be snappy and fun (especially from the creepy stuffed rabbit named Nagamimi, who reminds me of Kyubey from Madoka), but it comes in fleeting moments, and isn’t voiced outside of occasional phrases like “Okay.”
The limited story feels like a deliberate design choice, intended to funnel players into focusing on building their party. You can do this by way of dungeons, which thankfully aren’t as generic as some other crawlers, with large layouts and challenging enemies to face. 7th Dragon‘s combat system is the absolute best part of the game, because even though each class is mostly comprised of archetypal roles, the diversity of the skills on offer really makes you think.
Naturally I chose a Samurai as my main squeeze, who has access to a skillset that mostly benefits himself — options like a self-heal and self buffs to take the heat off of my healer. That role instead went to my hip-looking GodHand that I appropriately named Lucio, who operates similarly to a Monk in a series like Final Fantasy. He can not only heal teammates but also build combos, which take careful planning to ramp up damage. One of my other favorite classes is the Duelist, who can summon “cards” with different elemental aspects (ice, fire, lightning) that all have unique properties.
It’s tough to manage at times but not insurmountable, as you can swap the difficulty at any time between standard and casual. The skill system is also very open-ended. Players can use points to jack up their stats (like health and mana), discover new abilities, or augment old ones. Just about everyone should find a class or two they gel with that allows them to play to their strengths.
That hardcore element of number crunching also expands to the hub system. It’s a small, confined, and sometimes vanilla area, but you can basically alter it to your whim, adding optional modules with “Dk” points, acquired on quests. An instant warp system (triggered by the R button) is also convenient, because that’s what 7th Dragon does best — it streamlines all the fluff, sometimes at the cost of a more captivating world.
Again, 7th Dragon III Code: VFD isn’t a game you want to get into if you aren’t the type of person who puts a lot of time into party preparations. If you want a rich, engrossing story with unique characters that grow over time, turn around and walk away now, as this is very much a niche dungeon crawler that will only speak to specific members of the community. But for those people, it’s a good enough RPG respite in the sense that it actually allows you to play a role in the way you see fit.
