Every German invited to a birthday, anniversary, wedding, tries to find a practical gift, so that it is not, for example, another vase or cosmetics that will not suit the person.

Gutschein is a gift certificate in the form of a plastic card that a person can use for a certain period and in a specific place. They are in cinemas, theaters, bookstores, various retail chains, beauty salons. Perhaps there is not a single place where it would be impossible to buy gutshine.
It is interesting that in Germany there is even a Steuergutscheine (tax gutschein) — a tax certificate, a government promissory note accepted for payment of taxes. Many online stores (for example, Amazon) also have gutshines, which are a code that the gifted person enters when making a purchase in an online store.
Gutscheins in Germany cannot be cashed out, you can only purchase a product/service for the specified amount during the validity period of the certificate. This information is contained in almost all gutshines.
If you do not use it within a certain period, then it will be canceled and the seller is not obliged to return the money to you legally.
With regard to the term of gutshines, earlier the certificate could be used for 30 years, and since 2002 their term is no more than 3 years. The term of 3 years is calculated from the end of the year in which it was donated.
For example, if a gutshine was donated on July 12, 2019, then the period will be considered from December 31, 2019 to December 31, 2022. The date of issue must be indicated on the gutshine in the cinema, otherwise the certificate is invalid.
The certificate can be used at one time or in parts. If a smaller amount is used than the nominal value of the gutshine, the balance is retained and can later be used as part of the total payment.
Germans are very fond of giving and receiving gutshines, more than 2 billion euros are spent annually in total on the purchase of certificates.
There are also «bonus» certificates that stores actively use to promote goods and services.
Read the terms and conditions carefully, sometimes they are only valid for new customers or when buying a certain amount.
In practice, such certificates can be obtained in the event of a change in insurance company or electricity supplier. A certain amount will be credited to your account, which can be used to pay for services at the end of the month.

I hoped that there would be no problems with the kindergarten in Germany, but it turned out that there are not enough places everywhere, including in Berlin: here parents get in line almost after the first ultrasound.
However, it is worth mentioning that this is not about the city line, according to which you will be offered the first institution that comes across, but about the “dream garden”, which you yourself have chosen. So what needs to be done. First you ask the Youth Office ( Jugendamt ) for a special document ( Gutschein ), which guarantees payment for kindergarten by the state. In addition, it also indicates how much time the child can spend in the garden. Given that my husband works full time, I need intensive language courses, and the child needs integration and good German for school (that is, in just two years), we requested 7-9 hours, but the gutshine came only for 5-7.
The next step is to conclude an agreement with the kindergarten hosting you. This is where the fun begins: you have to find a kindergarten yourself, but, of course, there are no places in them. I think that this system works well for the locals, but for those who have moved, finding a free place in fully staffed institutions is another quest.
I visited the nearby kindergartens as soon as I received a residence permit. Given that my German at that time was at about A1 level (that is, practically absent), this was a real feat. I boldly entered the manager’s office and said the memorized phrase: “I don’t speak German. My son needs a place in the kindergarten, ”and immediately fell into a pool of complete misunderstanding. Only active gestures and fragments of familiar words helped me to understand that there were no places, and when they would be, it was not known.
In the first two kindergartens, I filled out a questionnaire, left a phone number and put my child on the waiting list. In one, I was assigned a term — that is, a personal reception, at which they told in detail how their garden differs from others, showed the groups and the menu. In the fourth, I was lucky: there was a Russian-speaking teacher, but neither the questionnaire nor the queue was offered to me. The fifth kindergarten was impregnable, they were only allowed in by prior telephone appointment, and talking on the phone is the highest point of the language barrier.
It was not possible to take the gardens in a hurry. Just at this time, the long-awaited gutshine came to us, and this prompted me to desperate measures. Firstly, I decided to expand the geography of my searches, and secondly, to stop going to kindergartens without an invitation. A complete search is the most effective method: I found on the map all the kindergartens within a radius of three kilometers from the house (there were about 30 of them) and sent them letters.
Refusals were not long in coming. «No places», «no places», «no places». Several kindergartens were invited to come and fill out questionnaires, I visited them all. The last one, the farthest one, remained, I went there in complete moral decline, thinking that people in this city never move and do not make room. But a miracle could not help but happen — the manager said: «There is a place, in two weeks we are expecting a child in the group!»
As a result, the garden was found only two months after the move .
