Pokémon Legends: Arceus sure looks like Breath of the Wild in first trailer

Pokémon fans rejoiced today when the Pokémon Presents stream unveiled not one, but two new games.

We got Diamond and Pearl remakes for Nintendo Switch, but somehow even that wasn’t enough to upstage the other big announcement of the day: A new open-world Pokémon game, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is coming to Nintendo Switch in early 2022.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is an open-world adventure set in feudal Japan and while its open-world formula leaps away from previous Pokémon titles, people online were quick to compare the game to another incredibly popular Switch game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

This isn’t the first time that fans have compared a Pokémon game to the beloved Zelda title. Throughout the announcements and release period of Pokémon Sword and Shield, fans couldn’t help but point out the similarities between Sword and Shield’s open roaming “Wild Area” and Breath of the Wild. However, while those comparisons made sense back then, they pale in comparison to just how alike Legends: Arceus looks to the Zelda game.

For one, both are open-world games, but it goes beyond that. Breath of the Wild has a stunning cinematic style and we see that mimicked in the new release trailer for Legends: Arceus. This GIF from Twitter account Akfamillyhome shows just closely how the cinematography matches up between the two games.

As a result of these similarities, numerous people on Twitter are calling the new Pokémon game, “Pokémon: Breath of the Wild” and “Breath of the Wild 2,” joking that we finally got the much anticipated sequel to the Zelda game. If you search “Breath of the Wild” on Twitter right now, you will pretty much only get results showing Pokémon screenshots.

Pokémon Inspired By Legend Of Zelda Is the Ultimate Crossover

By
Cody Gravelle

An extremely talented artist with an eye for both franchise’s best qualities creates the ultimate Pokémon and Legend of Zelda crossover.

An artist has imagined the ultimate crossover between Pokémon and The Legend of Zelda, with the resulting creatures a refreshing blend between the two franchise’s most compelling aesthetic qualities. Pokémon is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and is in the midst of several different events across its properties as a result, while the most recent entry into the storied Legend of Zelda franchise is Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

To suggest that Pokémon and The Legend of Zelda are two of the most influential Nintendo IPs ever might actually be under-selling the importance of both franchises in the video game industry, but they’ve remained largely independent of each other. Outside of skirmishes between Pikachu and Link inside the Super Smash Bros. universe, both Pokémon and The Legend of Zelda have continued to innovate on their own releases without venturing into a fully-fledged crossover with each other. The upcoming Pokémon Legends: Arceus certainly borrows heavily from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, however, and fans have remained interested in potential crossovers down the line.

One talented artist posted to the Legend of Zelda subreddit to share their work on a Pokémon crossover with the game, re-imagining some of the most enduring aesthetics in the LoZ series as part of the creatures in Pokémon. The artist, whose name is William Cole and goes by hyrule.region on Instagram, has released 28 designs so far at time of writing, and they’re all great examples of someone with an understanding of what makes both properties special. The reddit thread is filled with fans who are impressed by the Pokémon and Legend of Zelda crossover, and the images even have some bonus crossovers in them:

Yes, that’s a Sasuke (of Naruto fame) starter, complete with Twilight-typing to embrace the duality of the character. While all the designs are compelling takes on the universes being mashed up, the starters in particular do a wonderful job of capturing the essence of what makes Pokémon evolutions so exciting while maintaining clear visual representations of the Legend of Zelda inspirations that serve as their base.

It’s not a major surprise that Pokémon crosses over with The Legend of Zelda so well — they’re both family-friendly Nintendo franchises with distinct, memorable visuals, which means it’s easy to tell when they’ve been mashed up well. Still, Cole’s art is exceptional, and it’s the kind of mashup that makes fans really start to question why an official one hasn’t happened yet.

I’m Blushing Animated Movie Inspired by Pokémon, Zelda and Earthbound

I’m Blushing (or Turning Red, in the original) is a fresh Disney Pixar animated film that came out in February on Disney+ and follows the coming-of-age of a 13-year-old girl, torn between being the obedient daughter her mother wants her to be, and exploration of the chaos of his age.
nine0003

This is one of Pixar’s most unique productions, and is a far cry from the studio’s previous work in style. Obviously, the visual approach was directly influenced by the work of Nintendo.

In an interview with the Washington Post, director Domi Shi revealed that both she and production designer Ron Liu were big Nintendo fans growing up. They spent most of their childhood playing Nintendo games, and their style was influenced by Pokémon and Earthbound. Zelda: Breath of the Wild also helped create the aesthetic. nine0003

“We both just love this cute aesthetic and it’s definitely brought up by Nintendo games like Pokémon and EarthBound. There’s just something so endearing about the way they are able to style their world in such an attractive and cute way. When we were designing the look of our film, we looked at Breath of the Wild and thought, «Wow, how do they manage to make the world so beautiful and rich, yet so simple?».
