Beware: Pokemon! — Call

Many of our readers remember how in 1996 the world was covered by a wave of Pokémon craze. A computer game, anime, manga, card game — where only images of unusual fictional animals were met. After 20 years, the world is again experiencing a wave of invasion of pocket monsters (this is how “pokemon” is translated from English). Only here in the new incarnation of the game about Pokemon, the action takes place partly in the real world. Whether this is good or bad, the journalists of the newspaper «Prizyv» understood.

Pokemon GO is Niantic’s massively multiplayer free online augmented reality game developed for IOS and Android platforms. The app was released in a number of countries in July 2016, and on the first day after the release, the game topped the ranking of mobile apps in terms of downloads.

Seek and catch!

The goal of the game is to find and capture Pokémon that are randomly located around you (you can only see them on the screen of your smartphone). Once you’ve found a Pokémon, it must be captured, trained, and used to fight other Pokémon.

In Pokemon Go, the gameplay is superimposed on the real world with an additional layer. Using GPS, the application determines where the player is, and in order to move in the game, you must physically move in space. The game is tied to an interactive Google map and navigator and resembles orienteering. When the player approaches the Pokémon, the smartphone starts to vibrate. This means it’s time to stop and look around — a virtual animal is hiding somewhere nearby. Using the camera built into your smartphone, you need to catch a Pokemon.

Although the number of countries where Pokemon Go has been officially launched is quite small, it is already being played all over the world. In our country, the application is also officially unavailable, the release date has not yet been published. However, according to PR-manager of Nintendo in Russia Konstantin Govorun, in the near future the official version of the game will appear in our country. But Russian gamers have already come up with several ways to get access to the coveted application from unofficial sources.

Catch at any cost

According to the developers, the game was created to help people suffering from agoraphobia and bouts of anxiety, panic and depression go for a walk and chat with other people, as the application assumes that a person should at least get up from the couch during the game.

But many of the people are so immersed in the game that they forgot about the elementary safety rules. In this regard, experts around the world began to sound the alarm and urge not to lose vigilance, plunging into a game that «mixes» reality and the virtual world. For example, in search of Pokémon, many players go out late at night and visit unfamiliar places where they are attacked and robbed.

Someone is so addicted to the process that they do not notice the real obstacles in front of them — a ditch, a busy roadway, a moving train … Some manage to combine the game and driving a car, which has already led to several traffic accidents.

Unlimited

The more you move around the street, the higher your chances of catching Pokémon. People began to walk more, you see, it’s great!

The only problem is that the developers of the game did not provide location restrictions. In addition to simply dangerous areas — places where increased concentration of attention is required (metro, railway tracks, bridges, etc.), the game can take you to a church or temple, to public authorities, cemeteries and memorials.

There are locations in the game called Pokestops. These are special places that exist in the real world and are highlighted on the game map. In these places, players can find eggs, from which Pokémon later hatch. For example, one of these places is the Holocaust Memorial Museum, where players began to come in search of «valuable» gifts.

Representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church have already urged players to refrain from «catching Pokemon» in the church. Employees of many memorial cemeteries and museums turn to smartphone users with similar requests.
Yana Lantratova, executive secretary of the Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights under the President of the Russian Federation, announced that the HRC will develop recommendations on the possible restriction of the use of the game in cemeteries and public authorities.

Pokémon are spies?

And now let’s think, how many of us, downloading the next application to our smartphone, read the privacy policy of this very application? In fact, only a few do.

But there is one very interesting point in the privacy policy of the Pokemon GO game, which says that the developers can transfer any information they collect about the player or his child to the government, law enforcement agencies or individuals. Niantic is officially warning all players about this.

Just think: Pokemon Go, or rather, its developers, not only know where millions of people are currently located, but they are also able to find out with whom this or that person is currently in contact and what is happening around him. In other words, the player completely voluntarily allows foreign companies that control modern operating systems to «look» at his home or work, find out his level of wealth, and so on.

The Minister of Telecom and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation Nikolai Nikiforov, as part of the forum «Territory of Meanings on the Klyazma», suggested that the Pokemon Go game was created with the participation of special services to collect video content.

“Some talented guys created a talented game. I have a suspicion that this application was made, among other things, with the participation of special services that collect video information on the territory of all countries, all over the world,” Nikiforov said, speaking at the forum.

The assumption is not without reason: the American application developer Niantic Labs is an internal start-up of Google Corporation, which, as everyone knows, is directly controlled by the CIA.

Is the game worth the candle?

The scale of the “epidemic” that has engulfed the Russians is illustrated by at least the following figures: in the VKontakte social network alone, dozens of groups dedicated to the game have been created today, with tens of thousands of subscribers. And these numbers are growing every day.

Even before the official release in our country, the game divided users into two traditional camps: pros and cons.

We walked the streets of Krymsk and asked random passers-by if they had heard anything about the new game and what they thought of it.

Vadim, 28 years old: “I think it’s cool! People will move more! But I’m not going to play.»

Svetlana, 17 years old: “This is terrible! People rush around the city, buried in their smartphones, and yell with joy when they discover something. From the outside it looks ridiculous. I will never let my little sister download the game!”

Igor, 43 years old: “Perhaps in this way people will start walking more on the street and visit sights, at least in search of animals. But still there are fears that they will not notice anything except for their Pokémon.

Eugene, 24 years old: “It would be better if we didn’t catch Pokemon with such enthusiasm, but criminals, not these animals, but the missing children.”

David, 27 years old: “Well, it’s a little hot to run after animals now, but in the autumn you can hunt, anyway, we have very little entertainment in the city.”

Daria, 54 years old: “My grandson told me that there is such a game. It seems to be good. Whether to sit at the computer, or take a walk down the street. I think the latter is better.»

As expected, there were very few people who hadn’t heard anything about the game. But even fewer people turned out to think that, by playing Pokemon Go, they deprive themselves of their privacy, giving information about themselves and their surroundings to complete strangers on a silver platter. Although, who will you surprise and frighten with this in an era of an abundance of social networks?

In any case, to play or not to play — everyone decides for himself. However, although Pokemon Go has already become the most popular smartphone and tablet game to date, this does not mean that it is worth risking your career or even your life for it.
