Playstation now for ps3: PS Now | On-demand PlayStation games on PS5, PS4 or PC

What is PlayStation Now and how much does it cost?

Why you can trust Pocket-lint

(Pocket-lint) — PlayStation Now is Sony’s cloud gaming subscription service that offers hundreds of PS4 and PS3 games to play over the internet on your PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PS4 Pro and, in some cases, a PC.

You don’t need to install most of the games onto your own console, although some can also be downloaded to your console to play direct.

Here then is everything you need to know about PlayStation Now.

  • Which PS4 games should you put on your wishlist?

When does PlayStation Plus replace PS Now?

In early 2022 PlayStation announced that it was merging PS Now into its new three-tiered system for PlayStation Plus, something that will make it more integrated into the PlayStation universe.

This should happen in June 2022 when the new memberships launch, and has one sad consequence — you will have to pay more to get your streamed games, since only the Extra and Premium tiers of the new service will include the feature. Sony says that existing subscribers won’t get a rise in their prices «at launch» but we’d imagine this won’t last forever.

For now, all of the information below is still accurate, but PlayStation Now will be phased out starting in mid-2022.

How does it work?

PS Now is mainly a cloud-based service much like Netflix or Spotify, but for gaming. It hosts a wide collection of PS2, PS3 and PS4 titles (more than 700 games are available). You can access them at your leisure, all through a PS Now app on your PlayStation 4 or PS5.

It uses technology acquired when Sony bought cloud gaming company Gakai and some of the technologies of the since-deceased OnLive. It allows you to play games that are not hosted on your own local console, but on massive servers elsewhere.

In a similar fashion to Xbox’s Project xCloud and Google Stadia, the video of the game is streamed over the internet to the display you are using, with controller commands and your actions sent the other way. This happens almost instantly, so the effect is similar to running them from your console’s storage.

Some PS4 games on the platform are available to download too, which work exactly like their equivalents bought from the digital PlayStation Store and are run from your console rather than remotely. You will need the hard drive space to install them and they only work while you continue to subscribe, but you will notice better graphical resolution and no lag or latency issues.

Do PS Now games look and play exactly like the games we can play on the PS4 directly?

Streamed video is in either 1080p or 720p rather than or 4K, depending on your region and what title you’re playing. That doesn’t matter so much for PS2 and PS3 titles that were originally created in lower resolutions but you may find a dip in detail and picture sharpness will be more noticeable for the PS4 line-up.

There are also reports of slight lag and latency issues when playing some of the faster, more demanding games. Latency is basically the time it takes between you pressing a button on the controller and seeing the results appear on screen. Because the controller response has to travel over the internet to a PlayStation Now server, be understood, then the video has to travel back over the internet to your console and TV, there is an unavoidable lag that wouldn’t occur if you were playing the same game locally.

However, great strides have been made in ensuring the latency is as low as possible and you would be hard-pressed to notice it on most games. The vast majority play just like they do on the console itself.

That includes the ability to play multiplayer on certain titles and PS Now games also reward gamers with Trophies like their disc-based counterparts. Save games are stored in the cloud too, so you can pick up from where you left off no matter what device you played on last.

What devices is it available on?

Sadly, while PS Now was originally available on a wide selection of devices, it is restricted to PS5, PS4, PS4 Pro and Windows PCs these days.

And Windows PC owners can only stream games, not download them.

As far as we are aware, there are no plans to expand to other devices any time soon.

What internet speed do I need for PS Now?

It is recommended that you have a broadband connection of at least 5Mbps. Sony also suggests that you will get a more stable experience if you use a wired connection over a wireless one.

What games are available on PS Now?

At present, more than 700 games are available on the platform, which are made up of many PS3 titles and triple-A PlayStation 4 games, including God of War, Grand Theft Auto 5, Infamous Second Son, and Uncharted 4: A thief’s End..

How much does PlayStation Now cost?

All games are available on a Netflix-style monthly subscription model.

First time users get a 7-day free trial period and it then costs £8.99 per month in the UK, $9.99 in the US.

You can also purchase a quarterly or yearly subscription up front, to get a discount. They are priced at £22.99 / $24.99 and £49.99 / $59.99 respectively.

When and how can I get it?

PS Now is available in the UK, US, Canada, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Luxembourg, Switzerland and The Netherlands. You can get it through the PlayStation Store on your PS4 or PS5.

The Windows PC version is available here.

What are the alternatives to PS Now?

Xbox offers its own cloud gaming platform, Project xCloud as part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. You can find out more about it here: xCloud gaming with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: Everything you need to know.

If you’re looking for something to play on your Xbox One S or Xbox One X you’ve come to the right place. Here are the best games around for Xbox One.

Google also has its own cloud gaming service, Stadia. But unlike PS Now, you don’t get access to a whole library of games for one monthly fee. Instead, you have to pay for each game individually. Today is the day that PS Now and PS Plus merge in the Americas as Sony launches the new PS Plus service. The result is there’s a brand new PS Plus Premium and PS Plus Extra game list that includes hundreds of games from recent PS5 titles to classic PlayStation games. Some of the current PS Now games will be included in that list, but unfortunately this means PlayStation Now also loses more than 200 games today.

PlayStation Now loses a grand total of 246 titles, if we want to be specific, and they won’t be included in the new PS Plus game catalog. As a side note, those of you who need to finish these games can download them today and play offline for an additional 13 days as long as you don’t log back in online. As compiled by PSN Profiles user Starvar (thanks Reddit), the full list can be found below:

Redeem a promo code from PlayStation Store that comes with the PS3 game and download the PS4 version of the game. Then insert the disc from the PS3 version into the PS4 system to activate the product and start playing. You don’t need a PS4 system to redeem a promo code — just redeem a promo code and you can download the digital version when you get your PS4.

Supported games

  • Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition
  • Battlefield 4
  • NBA 2K14

Sony has disabled the PS Store in Russia — how to play and buy games digitally now — PlayStation on DTF

views

On the night of March 9-10, Sony suspended the supply of games and devices to Russia — along with this, the company turned off the PS Store in the Russian Federation, so you can no longer buy digital games and activate titles with a PS Plus subscription.

Despite the new restrictions, consoles have not yet become completely useless. We tell you how to play the games that you already have on your account and how to buy new ones.

So, there are workarounds, and one is better than the other:

Let’s go!

What exactly can not be done

First, the bad news. Definitely not going to work:

  • Get the game from a PS Plus subscription to a Russian account. Operations in the PlayStation Store for accounts from Russia have been suspended. And getting a game from PS Plus is just such an “operation”.
  • Buy the game the old way, just by entering your card details or PayPal. PS Store stopped accepting Russian cards on March 1, and PayPal suspended work in Russia on March 5.
  • Buy a PS Plus subscription to a Russian account. Again, this is a «PlayStation Store operation» and they are limited.
  • Purchasing something with funds from the PS Store wallet will also not work, as this is also considered a transaction.

Now that we’ve dealt with all the bad news, we can move on to the good news.

We play already purchased games

You can still install previously purchased games on your console through the PS Store.

Sony has not made an official announcement that it is closing access to purchased games. However, she also did not report that access to purchased games would remain open. It’s just that access is saved right now — and you can use this to finally replay The Witcher, for example.

Instructions:

  1. Open the Game Library section on the main screen.
  2. Select the «Your collection» subsection.
  3. Find the game you want to install and open its page.
  4. Click Download.

As early as the night of March 10, you could install games from your library through the PS App mobile app. Now this function has been closed, and the mobile application has turned into a “pumpkin”.

Create an account in another region

Sony has blocked access to the PS Store for Russian accounts. But accounts from other regions still work — even if the console is physically located in Russia.

The only problem is that you have to buy games somehow. Buying recharge cards for other regions from Russia does not work, because it is a payment in a foreign store, and Visa and MasterCard have suspended operations in Russia. Therefore, this method is only suitable for those who have friends abroad who are ready to buy a top-up card or just a game for you.

Especially lucky those who have friends in Turkey — there are some of the cheapest games. And 60 days without a visa. Enough to open a Turkish bank card.

Instructions:

  1. Create a new PSN account (you can do it here).
  2. Already in the second step, specify the desired country. The main thing is not Russia, but some other. The one in which you have friends, relatives, acquaintances or other good people.
  3. After creating and verifying your account, sign in to your console.
  4. Enjoy working PS Store!

There is a problem: buying games. We checked several shops selling foreign recharge cards (list here) and couldn’t buy from any of them. Even taking into account the fact that they accept QIWI and Yandex. Money cards (which are now YuMoney).

Therefore, the method is suitable only for those who have friends abroad. Or for someone who is brave and desperate enough.

It is also advisable to first try to buy a recharge card for the desired country, and only after that — create an account for this country.

Briefly about the uncertainty of the situation

The situation with the shutdown of the PS Store in Russia is extremely uncertain. Sony has not released any official statement about exactly which PS Store features are disabled for Russia. The entire store is closed.

The switch-off does not take place instantly. Even on the night of March 10, you could download games through the PS App — but in the morning it’s gone. In the morning it was possible to buy games through the browser version of the PS Store — and now it gives an error with a sad text «It looks like you were looking for something completely different …».

It is not possible to predict if downloading games from the library will be available tomorrow, for example.
