Sony denied Bloomberg reports that the company was supposedly going to discontinue the PlayStation 4 in 2021. The Japanese manufacturer explained that it will continue to release the PlayStation 4 in 2022, and this has nothing to do with the shortage of the PlayStation 5.
The past and new generation of Sony consoles will be produced in parallel, as this is standard practice for the company during the transition of generations of game consoles.
Sony clarified that the PS4 is one of the best-selling video game consoles and is still making a lot of money for the company. The manufacturer explained that now the factories are producing not only PS4 Pro models, but also PS4 Jet Black 500GB. Sony said that the company has not and has not had any announcements regarding the end of production of the PlayStation 4.
On January 12, Bloomberg reported that Sony is fighting the shortage of the PlayStation 5 by building additional PlayStation 4s, and previously Sony planned to phase out the production of PS4 consoles in 2021 . This set-top box is easier to assemble, there are components for it, it costs less than new generation devices, and you can buy it in the store.
The PlayStation 4 was launched in 2013. In eight years, more than 116 million PlayStation 4s and more than 1.
15 billion copies of games for this console have been sold worldwide. Subscriptions to PlayStation 4 games still bring Sony the bulk of the profits. Several titles are coming to PlayStation 4 this year, including Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7 and God of War: Ragnarok.
The PlayStation 5 console was released in November 2020 and immediately became a hit in sales even against the backdrop of Microsoft’s rival Xbox Series X. Due to the shortage in the semiconductor market and problems with supply chains, Sony cannot increase the volume of production of the PlayStation 5. The company simply cannot buy the necessary components — no one has them in stock, only on order and with a long delivery time.
On January 13, the media reported that Microsoft had discontinued production of all Xbox One consoles. The company will focus only on the release of the new generation of Xbox Series X|S. This was due to the fact that the crisis in the electronics and components market barely affected the release of the Xbox Series S.
Microsoft was able to maintain a stable stock of chips for this set-top box and was able to meet demand for the Xbox Series S amid the current shortage of Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.
The Xbox Series S is more than 2 times faster than the PlayStation 4 hitherto released, and almost all the new games that were available on the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 were released for this console, including The Matrix Awakens tech demo,

Sony will continue to release PlayStation 4 game consoles this year due to problems in global supply chains that are limiting production of the PlayStation 5, Bloomberg reported, citing sources.
The company will produce approximately 1 million previous generation units in 2022 to offset the PS 5 release pressure.
