Review of the film «My Terrible Neighbor» / A Man Called Otto

On January 12, a new film with Tom Genks «My Terrible Neighbor» appeared in Ukrainian film distribution. This is the second incarnation on the big screen of Swedish writer Frederik Backman’s The Second Life of Ove, which was created by the director of Christopher Robin, World War Z and 007: Quantum of Solace. In this review, you will find out if the novelty is worth attention and whether it could become on par with the recognized Swedish film adaptation of 2015.

Genre Drama, comedy
Director Mark Forster
In the role of Tom Henks, Rachel Keller, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Cameron Britton
Premiere
9000 9000

22 Otto (Tom Genks) can’t stand people, he constantly grumbles and finds fault with trifles, but he loves order. He carefully takes care of his residential area, so he constantly quarrels with neighbors and employees of various services.

The man is even more troubled by his new neighbors — the pregnant Mexican Marisol (Mariana Trevino) with her husband Tommy (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) and two children. They constantly ask Otto to help them somehow, and tear them away from the main thing — to commit suicide in order to meet in heaven with their recently deceased wife Sophia.

When viewing the new tape and, with further analysis of it, one cannot avoid comparison with the first film adaptation of 2015, The Second Life of Uwe, directed by Hannes Holm. The film even made it to the Oscars shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film.

Probably, the creators of My Terrible Neighbor themselves understand this, because the credits indicate that the film is based not only on the book by Frederic Backman, but on the same tape.

It is also worth noting that everyone will like this movie: those who read the book and watched the first film, those who are unfamiliar with the original sources. It’s just that the first will like the American adaptation less, and the second more. And this is normal, because some will have something to compare with, while others will not.

«My Terrible Neighbor» loses to the Swedish film adaptation in terms of intimacy and depth of study of the main character’s story. «Uwe’s Second Life» is more guided by the book, dives deeper into the hero’s past, tells in detail about his relationship with his father, who played a significant role in the development of the guy, and then with his wife.

But the American film adaptation completely removed the episodes with the father, and his existence is mentioned in only one dialogue. We slightly cut the background of Otto’s relationship with his wife Sophia, because the main focus was on Tom Hanks, who plays his character here and now.

No matter how cool and, most importantly, of course, Swedish actor Rolf Lassgård played the role of Uwe, anyway Tom Hanks did it much better and more dramatic. His Otto is absorbed into the viewer’s brain almost instantly, penetrates into thoughts and stays there for a long time.

«My Terrible Neighbor» is designed for the American audience, so the story is reworked to fit the realities of the United States. Iranian migrants became Mexican, Volvo and SAAB were replaced with Ford and Chevrolet, added some middle-class problems, the difficult life of transgender people, and so on. In «The Second Life of Uwe» the problems of Sweden are also shown, but they are ours, European ones, therefore they are much closer and more understandable.

In everything else: the quality of the shooting, the performance of the secondary actors and the young main character and his wife (their roles were played by Tom Hanks’ son Truman and actress Rachel Keller), casting, musical accompaniment and camera work, «My Terrible Neighbor» is better first screening.

4.5

Edition ITC.UA

Pros:
incredible acting by Tom Hanks, well-executed role of Marisol, high-quality adaptation of European cinema to American, wonderful cast, excellent humor and respect for primary sources

Minuses:
curtailment of the main character’s relationship with his father, cutting off part of the story of young Otto and his wife Sophia, relying on the American audience removes the movie from the European audience

Conclusion:

«My Terrible Neighbor» is a bright sensual movie that is sometimes so lacking in the modern pursuit of blockbusters and comic movies. The picture proves once again that if Tom Hanks is filmed here, then the film is worth watching. The actor perfectly coped with the difficult role of a man who suffers and is angry at the whole world because of the loss of a loved one.

The film respects the primary sources, but still does not show some important aspects of the protagonist’s relationship with his father and wife. The reworking of the story for the American audience, although performed at the highest level, still moves us, Europeans, a little away from understanding some moments of the film. But the film adaptation still came out great, so we recommend everyone to watch it

How Contra: Hard Corps KILLED the essence of the

series

There is a video version. There is a text version. It’s up to you…

What is « contra «? For some, these are computer clubs, AWP purchases or hours spent on de_dust. For me personally, the game from Konami, which at one time notably ruffled my nerves and shook the unstable children’s psyche. This is the game that made us spend all our pocket money. The game that spawned a new genre in the industry and allowed Konami to assert itself even louder. And today I have something to tell you about it.

Well, I’m glad to welcome you to our secret special squad Hard Corps , your eternal sleeper at briefings will be me — York Morgan. And now you will find out how the legendary Konami code appeared, why aliens should be changed to terrorists, and why it was Contra: Hard Corps that killed the whole essence of the series.

Let’s be honest, arcade games were created with one goal in mind — to get you to spend as much of your hard-earned gold on it as possible. And there is nothing shameful in this, because in exchange for a hard cash, you received a storm of emotions. And this is one of the best investments, as for me. But in order to make you stick another piece of precious metal into the machine, the game must be interesting, and the most important thing is to challenge you. So that after you beat her, you can brag about it to your friends. Or just feel like you’re worth something. And Contra was just that.

This is what slot machines looked like in the 90s in our country. 15 kopecks from you.

The first machine with a game where we had to deal with an alien invasion appeared in 1987, created by the Japanese company Konami, which became the ancestor of the new game genre Run n’ Gun. As you can see from the title, we had to not only shoot at enemies, but also freely move around the locations using platforming. Before that, on slot machines, we were given control over any flying machine, where I hold down the firing button, you could only set the direction of movement for it. Here you are free to go to all four sides, not forgetting to use jumps, destroying everyone around.

«…it used to be better»

The game also included levels with an isometric camera. It was the first game that showed us such a perspective. This decision greatly diluted the gameplay. And you know what else made it different? Ability to play in co-op. You and your friend are saving the world from alien invasion at the same slot machine… If someone told me as a child that such a machine exists in the world, I would doubt its adequacy.

Welcome to isometrics, Bill.

The game had a fairly diverse arsenal of main characters. Automatic . Standard burst weapon. Mortar . Pretty powerful, but slow weapon. Laser gun . Has lethal power. Explosive projectiles that cause everything around to explode. And the unusual pump-action shotgun, which will become the hallmark of the series in the future. But it was impossible to switch between them. So I had to shoot from what I have.

Demonstration of combat power

The game itself was rather short. Its complete passage took an average of 15 minutes. But there is one «but». She was insanely complex. An endless stream of enemies that filled the screen in all directions. And a large number of bosses, each of which had to find its own approach. It is enough to catch one bullet or collide with the enemy, and any of your weapons found will be taken away and handed over to the default machine gun. Repeat five more times and kindly start again. Just don’t forget to insert the token. The Japanese did not stop at slot machines. And a year later, the game was released on home consoles. Thus began the history of the most hurricane series of games of that time.

Before moving on to the main topic of the video, let me literally in a nutshell tell you about all the games in the series that came out before our today’s hero of the occasion — Hard Corps. In order to understand why she killed the essence of Contra.

So, the year is 1988. February. There is no longer any need to put on a bulky down jacket and beg for money from your parents for another trip to the slot machines, because for the new year you asked Santa for a Contra cartridge for your brand new NES. And as you know, «what you do not ask, he will give you.» So, the arcade room is now in your living room. How did the home console version differ from the arcade version? Despite the fact that the old Nintendo Entertainment System had much less power, the version turned out many times better.

Yes, the backdrops have lost a bit of detail, but the designers did a good job with the contrast and richness of the picture. This made enemies and projectiles much easier to read. But this does not mean that the game itself has become easier. The number of enemies on the screen has increased, which means that according to the law of the genre, something should decrease. And here you will find a «pleasant» surprise. There were only three lives. They were visually marked with medals. Lose two and you have one last chance. All weapons after taking damage, just like in the older version, disappear. And when the new is raised, it is no longer possible to choose the past. What is especially important, passing the game together with another, the number of Power-Ups does not change. So in advance distribute who will pick what. Otherwise, there will be a fight. I guarantee.

CONTRAst higher

Colors are juicier

Enemies more

The game itself had a longer duration compared to its older brother. Since the levels have become longer, and the last one was completely divided into several parts. By the way, the Japanese were more fortunate than the rest, since their version had an intro that told us about the plot of the game. And before each level there was an animated insert with a map of the island. Well, to make you feel really good, it was in this version of the game that the very famous Konami code appeared, giving the player 30 lives.

Your plot

Your insert

Your card

The code itself was created by Kazuhisa Hashimoto in 1985. He was involved in porting the game Gradius for the NES console. And while testing it, he found it too complicated. That is why I decided to introduce a secret code into it, which gives the player absolutely all the weapons at the very beginning of the game. After it was discovered in Contra, it became a presence in almost all Konami projects. A little later, he left the studio, and to this day he is found in a variety of games, like an Easter egg.

1. Denial

2. Anger

3. Humility

4. Victory

Back to Contra. As for PC gaming, it’s just a «holiday». Not only was the game released under the name Gryzor, it also had a number of features. The Amstrad CPC version had no sound at all. Pretty handy to play it at night without fear of waking up your roommate. But it had a final screen saver with a big beautiful explosion of the entire planet. But the MSX 2 version had some really positive changes. As many as 19levels, HP bar and the ability to switch between different types of weapons found. But the cooperative was cut out. Agree, not the worst exchange?

ZX Spectrum. Minimalism is everything.

Amstrad CPC. Give me back minimalism!

MSX 2. See the shells? And I don’t see. And they are.

So, it seems I didn’t succeed in a nutshell… Let’s do it this way — we will collect six pluses on this blog, and I will write a separate blog where I will talk about all the games in the series, and the features of their versions in as much detail as possible. Come on, I believe in you.

A year later, Konami released a sequel to the game. Super Contra was, as they say now, a neat sequel. Don’t fix what isn’t broken. Just do the same and more. More enemies, more bosses, more levels and you’re done. Can be printed.

A year later, the game was released on the handheld console LCD Game, called C . Just C. The players had only three buttons at their disposal. Left, right, shot. I don’t even want to touch it, I still have to touch myself with these hands. But remember our agreement: nine pluses, and I am ready to suffer for you.

In 1991, the second handheld game in the series was released, called Operation C . This time for the Nintendo Game Boy. And she, now without jokes, looked and played excellently. The gameplay is no different from the NES version. All the same pace and all the same hardcore that warmed up your soft to the boiling point. Unless the console itself had a swampy black and white screen, but this did not interfere with the enjoyment of the game. All levels have been fully transferred. No matter how you look at it from the side and from above, the game looked great. Here, for the first time in the series, the automatic firing function appeared, and one radically new weapon for Contra — Homing . Weapons with homing projectiles. Let me remind you that the Game Boy was a portable console, which allowed you to always carry the game in your pocket. What else could you dream of?

Super Contra. Most.

C. Least of all.

Operation C. Something in between

In February 1992, Contra 3: The Alien Wars was released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It was all the same hurricane action, with no room for error. The game had several key features. Now we move not only on our two eternally ill people, but also use different means of transport. We can also climb walls and horizontal surfaces. But one of the most important innovations was the ability to play with a friend in Split Screen mode. Now you are completely free, and there is no need to rub against each other or yell at the whole room so that your partner finally moves forward.

I can only say one thing about Contra Force — it’s not canon. Konami herself speaks about this. They admitted that it was originally a completely different game, and it was called Arc Hound . But the game had to be sold somehow, so they didn’t come up with anything better than to write the word Contra in the name of the game. The marketing department obviously had a day off that day. By the way, in the game we are fighting not with an alien invasion, but with ordinary terrorists. I’m not talking about the fact that the game shamelessly slowed down. In general, there is something to talk about. So once again I remind you about 15 pluses. Yes, I’m getting bolder every minute, but you understand me, this is Contra Force!

Go!

Crawl!

Forget!

Well, finally, we have come to the point for which, in fact, we are all gathered here today. Contra: Hard Corps. Yes, despite the two letters after, the correct name of the game is that Hard Core. In honor of our new squad. It was released on August 8, 1994. But what is wrong with the game, I will now explain.

In Contra: Hard Corps we are given four playable characters. Each of which has its own unique arsenal. Let’s get to know them better. Ray Poward . Born and raised in the filth and plague of the slums of Keri. At one time he led a group of offenders. Hired into the team for his combat skills and superior intuition. Leads the special squad « Hard Corps «. Sheena Etranzi. Despite his cute appearance, he is quite a strong warrior. Rumor has it that in the battle in the jungle, she single-handedly disabled an entire squad. The only female character in the game. Which is funny, causes the least interest among the players. No sexism, we have a heterosexual community here! Just a fact. Brad Fang . The perfect fighter, created using the latest technology and genetic engineering. Always calm and collected. Enjoys the confidence of the security forces. Skillfully waving his hands. Browny . The real name is « Combat Robot CX-1-DA300 «. The soldiers nicknamed him « Brownie » for his hospitable nature. Has skills in working with numerous database systems. Well, just really cute.

Ray

Sheena

Brad

Browny

Well, now let’s move on to armament. Initially, each member of the team has a heavy machine gun in his arsenal, and already in the course of the passage he can knock out one of the four (and collect them all) weapons. Between which, by the way, this time they were allowed to switch freely. Also, quite rarely, we can find a warhead that deals colossal damage with an explosive wave. And now to the individual.

Let’s start with Ray. Vulcan Laser . Emits a thin jet of laser, long range. Has a high rate of fire. Deals heavy damage. Crash . Sends combat-fragmentation horizontally at a medium distance. Projectiles explode on impact with enemies or obstacles. Deals heavy damage. Spread . An ageless classic that wanders from game to game. Fires a large shot in five directions at the same time. Each unit deals low damage, but if you use it point-blank, it will hurt. Homing . Came straight from the Game Boy version. All of itself is independent, which means it is not necessary to aim. Deals low damage.

Next in line is Sheena. Genocide Vulcan . The same large-caliber, but slightly larger. Does not require recharging. Has medium damage. Shower Crash . Explosive round, flying in an arc. It takes place only if you love from above. Deals heavy damage. It’s not a pity to waste. Break Laser . Fairly powerful laser. Shoots in bursts. It has a distinctive feature to pass through enemies through. Deals heavy damage. Ax Laser . Self-guided fan laser. Plus, you don’t have to aim. Minus — deals low damage.

Next on the list is Brad. Beast Shooter . A volcanic cannon of destructive power. The affected area depends on the distance. So keep your enemies away from you. Power Punch . Hand-to-hand combat. Due to the incredible speed of impact, a powerful gust of wind is created around the cybernetic prosthesis, which can easily be confused with an explosion. Deals heavy damage. Distance is critical. Flame Thrower . It incinerates everything in its path. It has inertia, which allows it to ignite in all directions. The dangerous distance is medium. Damage dealt is similar. Psychic Blaster . Try to control yourself. The longer you hold, the stronger the beam of energy comes out of you. And if unbearable, then forget about the damage.

And the last one at our party tonight, Browny. Victory Laser . V-shaped laser emitting gun. It has inertia, which means you can safely flood everyone around. Deals heavy damage. Gemini Scatter . Metal hedgehogs, with a boomerang function. No matter how many shots, they come back. Due to this, they inflict heavy damage on enemies. Shield Chaser . Projectiles orbiting Browny, dealing moderate damage to enemies. Well, if you want a distance further — please. All rounds fly at the target on their own and deal heavy damage. Electromagnetic Yo-Yo . A perfect example of not judging a newspaper by its title. Automatically pulls itself towards enemies, dealing massive damage to them. All right. HUGE . This is the most powerful weapon in the game. In general, all Browny weapons deal heavy damage. Okay, except for one. It deals HUGE damage. And that’s one of the problems with the game. But there is another.

COLOSS…

Characters of different heights in the game. Except that Ray and Sheena are still arguing about which of them is slightly taller, apart from the cap. Brad is a couple of goals ahead of them. And Browny… well, he’s half the size of mere mortals. And what, you ask? And the fact that due to its physiological features, Brad will lie face down in the mud more often than others. Despite the fact that most of his arsenal is for close combat. Although it should be the other way around. Since you are more exposed to catching lead in your direction. Which means you have to stay away. In places where the rest of the characters are forced to lie down in order not to take damage, Browny is enough … just to stand. And do not forget that two of its guns have the function of homing fire. It gets ridiculous. When you just need to hold the trigger and that’s it. Of course, you can stretch your two metal ones by walking back and forth, but there is no need for this.

«Ruler» . 1994 Photo in color

At least it didn’t get stuck…

I’m fine!

Good. Browny is half the height of the average, which means he should jump lower, right? No. Not only does his jump height match his teammates, he also has a Double Jump. And it is not difficult for him to climb to any height. While others can only envy silently. What? Ray, Sheena and Brad didn’t get their faces wet enough in fresh warm? Okay, how do you like that? In addition to Double Jump, Browny also has Rocket Jump, that is, the ability to temporarily hover in the upper space, allowing him to overcome a longer obstacle or not fall into a cliff.

Stop!

Jump!

Well, you’re a pig…

B are you there?

Returning to size. Browny is so low that he doesn’t even need to dodge enemy bullets as they fly above his head. And giving him a melee weapon is the right decision. Since the risks of catching an enemy projectile in yourself are minimal, which means you can reduce the distance to the target. But instead, he is given the most powerful types of weapons, with homing projectiles, while the tall Brad is obliged to huddle under the nose of the enemy…

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to destroy your childhood by poking the game with a stick, pointing out its flaws. I love Hard Corps. I consider it a good game that gave me wonderful childhood memories. What is worth arguing with friends about who will play for whom, which sometimes turned into what can proudly be called gladiator fights.
