The Last of Us’ Winter Chapter Remains Naughty Dog’s Greatest Triumph

Naughty Dog aren’t typically known for speaking with gameplay, which is kind of unconventional. For one of the most well-known studios in the industry, they rely a lot on cinematic language instead. The gameplay in some of their games can be so pedestrian that when you strip away the presentation, it’s not unreasonable to get bored. For every jaw-droppingly rendered cutscene with great acting, you have another box puzzle or shoot-out. This is a massively missed opportunity, because there’s one key moment, all the way back in 2013, that demonstrates what Naughty Dog could accomplish. I’m talking about the Winter chapter of the original The Last of Us.

Winter is arguably the real climax of The Last of Us. It’s the culmination of everything we’ve seen before taken to its height. We’ve seen hostile bandit groups, a few kind survivors, and plenty of infected. We already know that Ellie, our young charge we’re guiding across post-apocalyptic America, is immune to the infection but otherwise fragile. It’s always been on grizzled “Sad Dad” Joel to shoulder responsibility in combat, even as Ellie tries to help.

Except now Joel’s sick, infected from falling on a steel rod, and it’s up to Ellie to provide food while they’re sheltered in an abandoned house. Rabbits are providing some nutrition, but small game is nothing compared to the healthy, proud deer she spots in an open clearing. It’s at this moment, after hours of near Wii-era Nintendo levels of hand holding, Naughty Dog finally lets players free.

Everything in this sequence is dynamically player-driven. You can use the listen mode to track the deer, but also its tracks left in the snow. There’s nothing else going on, so every real-time impression stays as you stalk your providential prey. Every control input you’ve learned regarding stealth is recontextualized. You’re not repeating the same “neck-stabbing, toss stone to distract” routine. Despite only being able to flee, your opponent is smart, and able to detect you if you aren’t careful. There’s no incentive for it to charge you, putting its own preservation first.

Your only weapon is a bow and arrow, and nearly the entire heads-up display is removed as well.

This sequence can last less than a minute, or it can last several. There are whole sections of this micro-sandbox you might never see if you’re a great shot. Skill and patience are equally rewarded, yet those who struggle aren’t left behind. Every shot makes the buck bleed, leaving a trail as it slows, staggering about from its wounds. The first shot is the hardest, and with every renewed success, you and Ellie are that much closer to victory.

This all ties into what we know about Ellie. Even if you couldn’t care less about Joel, odds are you’ll have been endeared to Ellie and want to see her survive. She’s compassionate, smart beyond her years, and can fend for herself. After hours of her as an AI companion, what we’ve been told in cutscenes and scripted sequences is tangible.

Despite using the same controls as Joel, Ellie feels distinctly her own character. Throughout the rest of this chapter, Ellie can do infinite stealth knife takedowns, but struggles in a straight-up fist fight. She lacks close-range weapons but is an excellent sniper, even when cornered. She’s fast on her feet but has less health. Every advantage comes with a reminder that you’re no longer that generic, gruff male protagonist. You’re playing as a young girl trying to survive.

That struggle grows more complicated further in. After you mortally wound the buck, it runs off and naturally leads you to the level’s exit into the next stage. Here Ellie meets David, the leader of a group of survivors with an unpleasant secret of their own. He’s willing to trade her medicine that can cure Joel for the deer meat.

Here, the writing is just as surprising. This entire story beat stands on its own, not relying on previous context or heavy foreshadowing. The figurative knife up David’s sleeve is subtly revealed over the course of the remaining chapter. Every interaction before the reveal is genuine and human, which is fortunate, as you both have to fend off a horde of infected who catch the scent of the fresh deer kill.

The entire dynamic The Last of Us operates around is flipped, with Ellie free to make use of what’s lying around the level while David takes point as the adult in the room. She might not trust him, but Ellie has to rely on him. David is a damn good shot, and even saves you if you get caught by an infected. All the while, you’re thrown a sizable amount of resources in each room. Instead of limiting you to what the designers want, time is what’s most valuable, forcing you to make rapid-fire decisions. The perfect opposite to the deer hunt.

When the Boiler mini-boss arrives, you’re running low on supplies, which forces you to improvise. Every system in The Last of Us culminates here into a disturbing ballet of near-death experiences. The tension is amplified to an immense degree purely through the interlocking systems and instinctual player behavior. There’s no need for exploding trains, or dangling out the back of a crashing cargo plane. All good stakes need are limited resources, and a seemingly unending threat barreling at a player who has just enough room to breathe.

Afterwards, The Last of Us relies more on traditional Naughty Dog tropes. Scripted set-pieces of sniping, sneaking, and fleeing, yet the levels retain some of this open-ended design. The inclusion of a blinding blizzard is welcome as well. Nothing tops the very end though, when we finally confront David again. This is where Winter achieves its crescendo.

By this point, Ellie knows that David’s a cannibal. Worse, he’s a cannibal with an inflated, self-righteous ego. Ellie’s managed to break free of her cage, but is trapped inside a diner with David. Here we have another hunt, with the balance inverted. David can and will gut you if you try to face him head-on. Now instead of just staying silent, you have to distract him, using every instinct honed while stalking the deer.

All the while, David’s the one giving you additional prompts now. Saying things, making noises, and breathing heavy. Once again, how quickly this all plays out is down to the player, but speed carries a newfound risk. Rather than a chance of simply prolonging the fight, you run the risk of becoming prey.

In the end, Joel doesn’t come in and triumphantly save the day. It’s down to Ellie to be her own guardian, having proven herself fully through her series of trials. She’s the one who kills David. She’s the one with literal blood on her hands. Everything is driven by Ellie and her actions. She’s gone through all these adult situations and survived.

That’s what Winter represents: the culmination of Ellie growing up. Were we given the option to not see Joel’s rash decisions through in the finale, Winter would still serve as a perfectly reasonable conclusion. Everything ties together perfectly. It’s harrowing without feeling exploitative, speaking volumes to Ellie’s arc without getting in your face about it. And in that final breath when the danger has passed, it grants you a wave of relief that only the best survival-horror games can.

This is all the more important to consider in the framing of where Naughty Dog has gone since. The divisiveness of The Last of Us Part II, with its problematic framing and overreliance on shock. Uncharted grasping at similar moments of player agency but struggling where even more linear games like Max Payne 3 succeeded. It’s reasonable to say that Naughty Dog are still trying to figure out how to let players have a say in how they make their way through their games, yet here, for one shining chapter, they actually achieved it.

Winter is proof that leaving your audience with a profound journey doesn’t demand hundreds of hours of content or keeping them pulled along on a tight string. Sometimes all it takes is giving them a series of simple but intense problems with multiple solutions. From there, they’ll take the reins and tell the tale, whether they realize it or not.

HBO Secretly Revealed The Last Of Us’ First Big Change

By
Holly McFarlane

Adaptations inevitably make changes to better tell their story, but HBO’s changes to The Last Of Us will have major story ramifications.

HBO’s upcoming series, The Last of Us, will adapt the critically acclaimed game of the same name, but this adaptation will have changes that will alter the story. In the show’s first look, HBO shows early footage of The Last of Us series starring Pedro Pascal of The Mandalorian, playing Joel, and Bella Ramsey, who plays his daughter, Ellie, creating much buzz around the upcoming show. Though brief, this clip also inadvertently reveals one big change HBO is making to the original story.

HBO’s The Last of Us follows Joel and Ellie, two survivors traveling together during an apocalyptic outbreak of zombie-like creatures. The show’s first look opens with the characters crossing a bridge during wintertime. However, in The Last of Us games, Joel is on the brink of death during winter, having sustained heavy injuries after he and Ellie were ambushed by bandits. The time of year, and the winter setting, is a significant point in The Last of Us games, as it leads to the player controlling Ellie instead of Joel for the first time.

Related: The Last Of Us’ Casting Backlash Is Ridiculous

While it is not currently getting as much backlash as the show’s casting choices, Joel not being injured during winter is a big deal since Joel’s injuries drive the back half of the original story. If Joel is not injured during winter, it is unclear if Ellie’s point of view will be featured, or if Joel will become wounded some other way or time, and how this affects their encounter with a group of cannibals. HBO having Joel uninjured during winter in their adaptation of The Last of Us has big ramifications, and it will inevitably beget more changes as a result.

With Joel appearing to be uninjured during winter in the first look at HBO’s upcoming The Last of Us adaptation, some details of the series’ plot are now unclear due to the change. The most obvious question is: if Joel is not injured at the end of fall, when and how will he sustain his injuries? The universe of The Last of Us is volatile enough that there are plenty of ways Joel might be injured. One possibility is that his wounds could be inflicted by David and his group of cannibals, who The Last of Us cast encountered during the winter period in the original game. This would allow David to take a central role as an antagonist in the adaptation, in addition to creating a heightened sense of tension as Ellie tries to free Joel.

HBO changing the circumstances of Joel’s injuries in their adaptation creates another, more indirect change to the original story, affecting Ellie’s role in the latter half of The Last of Us. Winter marks the first time the story is told through Ellie’s eyes as she takes center stage while Joel rests and recovers, which gives Ellie a level of responsibility she hadn’t possessed up to that point. Ellie being taken into custody by David and having to kill him to escape is a major character moment for her, but these events are indirectly a result of Joel’s injuries. It would be difficult for these events to transpire if Joel is not injured during winter in HBO’s The Last of Us, leaving Ellie’s potential character development ambiguous. Though it’s a seemingly small change, HBO’s The Last of Us seeing Joel not be injured during winter will have major effects on the show’s story. Joel’s injuries start a domino effect, and having him healthy in winter leaves many details unclear, including Ellie’s role.

The Last of Us Walkthrough

HometownPrologue

Sarah, daughter of Joel.

On the eve of his birthday, Joel receives a watch as a present from his daughter. There were no signs of trouble that night. Waking up from the wake-up call of Tommy, Joel’s brother, we examine the postcard on the chest of drawers. Let’s look into the father’s bedroom and learn from the news about an unknown virus that has swept the town. We go down to the first floor, go to the kitchen and look through the calls on the phone. We go to the left, we pass through the ajar door. Excited, Joel hurriedly takes out a revolver and reports the strange behavior of the neighbors. One of them breaks into the house, Joel kills him, and we go out to the backyard. Together with Tommy we go in search of a safe way to leave the city. Having had an accident, we pick up Sarah and move down the road. Turn right at the crossroads. We continue to run, go around the truck and head to the alley on the left side. We get to the building, we go inside. Tommy will hold the door so they can escape. We meet a military man who saves us from the infected. However, he then receives orders to kill us. Tommy arrived too late, Sarah died from her wounds.

On the day the virus began to spread, everyone tried to get out of the city.

Summer20 years laterQuarantine zoneBehind the wall

The world has changed. The military set up quarantine zones, keeping the survivors away from the infected. Waking up to a knock on the door, we let Tess into the house and talk about pressing problems. She managed to make a deal, and now we are provided with cards for a couple of months. Robert is trying to put spokes in the wheels, you need to deal with him. After going outside, we follow the girlfriend to the checkpoint. We almost managed to pass it, but there was an explosion and all the passages were blocked. We quickly run after Tess, go into the building and get a first aid kit. Having bandaged the wound, we move along the corridor. In addition to us, Robert is looking for Marlin from the Cicada group. We get to the secret gap in the wall and move the cabinet to the right side.

We jump down, follow Tess to our things. We pick them up from the table, approach the red boards, look up and seat our friend. We get out, communicate with Tess and move after her. The required ladder is located on the side of the white car. We lean it against the wall and climb up. We follow Tess, in the dark we use a flashlight. The first floor is filled with controversy. In this case, Joel will put on a gas mask, and visibility will deteriorate noticeably. In the room, crouching, we pass through the gap in the wall. We remove the log from the path and squeeze between the cabinet and the drawer. We find a person whose mask is damaged. We select the cartridges lying nearby and shoot at the unfortunate head. Crouching we pass under the boarded-up boards. Faced with the infected, we first listen to see their location. We sneak up on the enemy, waiting for him to turn away. We carry out capture and strangle. The remaining two can be bypassed on the left side, be sure to turn off the lantern. We climb the stairs and get out.

Follow Tess to the next building and go inside. We climb higher and go down from the other side. We grab the board, we approach the wall to pass it to our partner. We ourselves go back up through the gap in the wall on the opposite side. We continue to follow Tess. While the boy is checking if there are soldiers and Robert’s people nearby, we will take the cartridges from the rack. We pass through the local market and go to the shipyard. Faced with enemies, we try to get close to them as close as possible. We save ammunition and, whenever possible, attack enemies in hand-to-hand combat. The gate is closed, so we plant Tess on the wall on the left side. Enemies again, slowly, follow Tess. After she deals with one of them, we make our way to the building and go inside. We sneak up on the one that is farther from us. We carry out capture and strangulation. We destroy the rest and select the key with which we unlock the door inside the building.

There is strict control in the quarantine zone: if you are infected, then you will be immediately shot.

Being behind cover, we wait for the end of the conversation. We destroy the enemy at the door, then another one in the next building. We go to the warehouse, sneak up on the enemy and carry out strangulation. We go up the stairs outside. After killing two, we search the warehouse. On the second floor, we select a knife from the table, with which it is much more efficient to deal with enemies after they have been captured. We open the gate on the first floor and get out to the pier. We go to the right and destroy the enemies one by one. We are waiting for the third one to come closer and turn away from us. We continue to walk on the right side until we get to the office.

Robert will start shooting, and when he runs out of ammo, he will run away. We catch up and ask him about weapons. He reveals that he sold them to the Cicadas. Marlene appears and makes a deal with us. We’ll get twice as many weapons if we agree to smuggle across the border. We follow a friend to her home. After reaching the bridge, turn left. We go up, then we enter the building on the left side and go around the enemy. As soon as we capture him, the ally will do the same. We move along the corridor, we pass into the last room and get out through the last window on the left. We destroy the enemy and another one on the right side. Only before that it is best to wait until the enemy on the bridge moves to the left side. We go down under the bridge and get to the dwelling.

Outskirts

Our mission is to escort the girl to the Capitol. Tess will go with Marlene to the Cicada camp to check on the weapons. Going outside, turn left and go down to the fence. We follow along it, then we go to the right and we get into the alley. To climb up, move the garbage container to the stairs. We go upstairs and get to the safe house near the border. After a little rest, we leave the apartment through a breach in the wall. We start the generator by pressing the button when the slider drops to the bottom of the scale. We crawl forward, climb the stairs and get out. We move forward, we pass through the container and are immediately attacked. After scanning, it turns out that the girl Ellie is infected. According to her, she was bitten already three weeks ago, but for some reason the virus did not affect her.

Follow Tess to patrol. We shift to the left and cling to the wall. We follow the enemy’s lantern at the top position. Carefully go around the corner and continue to move on the left side. We jump into the water, climb up and slowly move through the shelters to the other side of the building. We open the gate and, having got out, we get to the building on the right side. We wait behind cover when the enemy turns away. We neutralize it and head to the window at the other end. We go outside, continue to go forward and move along the sewer pipe to the building. Climb up the stairs and immediately turn left. Bending down, we pass through the gap in the wall. We run forward, turn right at the fork. We get to the grate and open it.

Although Joel and Tess often push the boundaries, this time the stakes are too high.

Following Tess, we rise to the top point. In the distance we see the Capitol building. Turn right and go inside. We get out to the stairs, we rise to the floor above. We find a clicker stuck to the door. Their faces are mutilated beyond recognition, so they do not see, but they hear perfectly. Break through the door and turn right. Together we open the next door. We deal with the clicker quickly and often by pressing the button shown. We look around in the rooms in order to find useful items. Some doors are locked and require a knife to open. Almost always the spent knife pays for itself with a vengeance. We pass into the very last room on the left and seat Tess to the yellow ledge. The partner will distract the nutcracker, let’s follow her. Then we independently distract the enemy by throwing the bottle to the right side. We climb up, jump to the stairs and remove the box from the path. We make our way along the platform outside, go around the corner and again we pass into the building.

We pick up a revolver, follow Tess and jump down. We select a piece of pipe, destroy the first enemy, sneaking up from behind. We return to the place where we jumped off. We pass forward and wait for the runner to go further down the corridor. We neutralize it and go to the other side. We watch for two more, and then we finish off the last one — the nutcracker. We jump up and move the box blocking the door. We go down and down. We select a Molotov cocktail, which we can make from the same items as first-aid kits. Bending down, we pass through the gap in the wall. We sneak up to the first clicker, deal with it and move to the right. We move to the other side. An enemy is standing at the grate, he must be killed. To do this without attracting attention, we will use a Molotov cocktail or a knife. We plant the partner to the ledge on the right side. Climb up the stairs and finally get out.

We get to the truck in the alley. Turn left and enter the building. We silently destroy the runners, grab the chest of drawers and carry it to the truck. We jump over to the other side, go forward and open the gate on the left side. At the last moment, we manage to run inside. On the workbench we can modify weapons. We open the door and go up to the second floor. In the middle of the room we come across a blockage. We raise the log so that Tess and Ellie can go further. We will take a different path. We turn right, get out into the corridor and wait for the runner. We pass into a large room on the right side, move to the other side and throw a Molotov cocktail into the corridor as soon as we notice the runner. A nutcracker will run to the sound and it will be engulfed in flames. We rise to the next floor, destroy the enemy beating at the door. We help Tess, then Ellie. We move away and fight off the runners, preferably using firearms. We jump through the window to the fire escape. We go upstairs, take any of the boards and use it as a crossing between buildings.

Ellie has never left the quarantine zone and that’s why skyscrapers seem to be something amazing for her.

We go down and drag the garbage container to the gate. We get out to the road and get to the Capitol. All Cicadas were killed, we also find out that Tess is infected. She suggests that we go further and find Tommy. Tess herself will stay here and try to hold back the military. Before we got to the top, Tess had already been shot. We jump over to another part of the building and pick up a rifle near the corpse. There are enemies ahead, we turn into the room on the left side and neutralize the lone enemy. Actively listening, we move to the other side and go down to the first floor. Again we move on the left side. We try to move silently for as long as possible.

We go outside and cross the road. We go down and quickly hide from the machine-gun fire. Since Ellie is immune, she can breathe spores. We destroy two soldiers and pass through the cars. The tunnel is flooded, so we continue to swim. Diving, we can bypass the rubble. We swim to the very end, where we find a raft. We transfer it to Ellie and transport it to the opposite side. We climb up the descended stairs and get out.

Bill’s town

After discussing with Ellie the moments that it is better not to remember, we move forward to the old acquaintance Bill. We move through the thicket of the forest and soon we will get out to the tower. The main gate is closed, so we go left and get to the stone wall. We select the board and move it to a small building. We climb onto the roof and raise the board. Here, by the way, you can pick up a modified piece of pipe. We install the board between the buildings and move to the other side. We go down, shift to the left and get to the gate. They are closed on the other side, so we give Ellie a seat. We move down the road, at the end we turn into an alley on the left side. The Nutcracker will blow up on the trap. We get to the truck, put a ladder and climb up. After crossing the board, we pick it up and install it next to the stairs. Rising up, we pull up the board and put it between the buildings. We continue to move on the roof. Going down, we crawl under the stretch. Two more stretch marks at the aisle on the grid. We move away, crouch and shoot them. We go further, destroy the stretch in the lower part between the walls. After entering the building, we fall into a trap. While Ellie is engaged in our release, we shoot back from the infected. Don’t worry about ammo, there will be an infinite supply. We reload more often and try not to let the enemies in. Bill will soon come to the rescue. We follow him, being distracted by enemies to a minimum. After some argument, Bill agrees to help us. To assemble the car, you will need parts that can be found in the city.

Any weapon can be modified, although you will have to find a workbench for this.

We collect a large number of useful items in this eatery. We get out, following Bill. When enemies appear, there will be nowhere to run, therefore, without departing from the allies, we fight off the infected. Having finished with them, we go upstairs and go down to the cellar, where the warehouse is located. We get a shotgun and an explosive bomb. It can be used as a mine, when an enemy approaches, an explosion will occur. If you throw a bomb directly at an enemy, it will explode instantly. Recently, the military appeared in the district. They were attacked by a horde of infected and the transport, having lost control, rammed the school wall. There we will find a working battery. We go upstairs and leave the church through the window. Against a large number of clickers in the garden, we use the Molotov cocktail. All of them will run to the noise and set themselves on fire.

We get out into the alley and pass through the territory of private houses. We listen and determine the location of the runners. We move forward, destroying enemies. We get to the far left of the house and try to open the door — it does not lend itself. Ellie will be able to cross to the other side through the dog door. We clean the gazebo and the house from clickers. It is enough to throw a Molotov cocktail at the aisle. We get out through the house to the other side, climb onto the van and move along the board to the neighboring territory. We thoroughly search the house. We help Bill open the gate in the garage. A truck is visible in the distance. We head towards it, simultaneously shooting the runners. We use bombs in narrow passages and do not allow ourselves to be surrounded. We get to the bus at the gate. We plant Ellie so that they lower the stairs. We move to the other side and follow Bill.

Medkit and Molotov require the same ingredients.

The doors of the school are closed, so we turn the corner and get inside through the window. Not finding the battery in the truck, we start looking for a way out. We follow the corridor, cleaning it from enemies. We pass through the audience, together we break through the door in the corridor. Once in the gym, we are faced with a large opponent. First we destroy the runners and only then we concentrate all attention on the thug. We try to shoot at his bright splices on the body. We do not stand still, as the spores flying at us cause constant damage and reduce the visibility area. Having won, we collect ammunition and reload weapons, we still need it. We plant Bill and Ellie, but we ourselves do not have time to climb. We destroy the runners and climb up.

We get out and follow Bill. As soon as the allies release the ladder, we immediately cling to it. In the house we find the hanged Frank, Bill’s partner. He was bitten by the infected and, apparently, he did not want to become one of them. Meanwhile, Ellie discovers a car with a working battery in the garage. It remains only to recharge it by pushing the car. After looking around the house, we approach the wheelbarrow from behind and take it out into the street. We are not fond of pushing, be sure to follow the enemies and shoot them in time. Breaking away from the infected, we say goodbye to Bill and continue our difficult journey. We arrive in the city; The freeway is full of cars, the only way is to turn right. We are facing an aggressive group of people.

Pittsburgh

We fight off the enemy by quickly and often pressing the button shown. Then we run up to Ellie and help her. There are many enemies and some of them will try to get close from the rear. We listen and control the location of the bandits. After killing everyone, we go outside and open the gate in the corner. We get out to the stairs, we rise upward. We pass along the corridor and open the side door. We jump down and move along the highway. Seeing the hunters, the easiest way to get around them is hiding behind the cars on the left side. We climb onto the bus and pass through the checkpoint. There are many enemies ahead, so if we want to act silently, then we turn right and penetrate the building. Climb up, go right and go down to the courtyard. We go into the lane, go up the fire escape and jump off the other side. If you break through with a fight, then we first clean the street, then the first floor of the building and, accordingly, the second.

Bill has mined almost every corner of the city.

We get to the flooded area and swim to the very end, where we find a raft. We deliver it to Ellie and transfer the girl to the bus. We pass through the van, turn left and get into the cafe. From here we jump up and go along the board to the hotel building. After jumping down, we go to the left. Opposite the bar is a structure. We pick up the ladder and bring it to the hall. We turn left and install the ladder on the wall, above which there are no railings. We climb up, then we rise to the second floor. We get out onto the roof through the window and move to another part of the building. Most enemies without firearms, but with improvised items. We try to be quiet. Along the corridor we get to the next staircase and go up to the third floor. We are located in the hall, from where a long corridor is perfectly visible. Ellie will warn you if enemies start to approach from the flank. After destroying all the enemies, we move along the corridor and get to the terrace. We penetrate into the room through the window on the left side, go out into the corridor and go up the stairs to the fourth floor.

We open the elevator door by quickly and often pressing the button shown. Climbing up the stairs, we climb through the narrow passage on the right side. We jump onto the elevator car, wait for Ellie and seat her. We fall down into the water. We get to the flooded stairs, dive under the water and swim to the lower floor. Having rested, we dive again and, having looked around, we swim through the door, next to which is the same emergency exit icon. We go further into the territory filled with disputes. Moving along the corridor, we go upstairs and arrive at the locked door. Firstly, there is no electricity and, secondly, a pass is required. We return to the corridor and pass along it to the end. We turn into the room on the right side, then right again and move to the opposite room. We take the pass from the table, return to the previous room and go down. Start the generator and hastily return to the locked door, which we unlock with a pass.

Seeing the beauty of the forests, one might think that there was no epidemic.

We go upstairs, we pass along the corridor and get out into the kitchen. We kill enemies, then we go into the hall. At the locked door lies a ladder, we install it against the wall to the right. Almost climbing up, we get a blow from above and break down. Quickly and often press the button shown several times. Ellie will arrive shortly and help us. Joel yelled at Ellie instead of thanking her. It’s all because of the fact that the girl used a firearm. Climb up and get to the restaurant area. We rise to the stage and push the piano to the wall. We climb up and get out. There are many enemies outside and it will be difficult for one to deal with them. Joel is left with no choice but to trust Ellie with the rifle. From the top position, she will cover us.

The hunters have been notified of our adventures. When they agree, move to the left and destroy the first enemy. We try to bring the enemies into the open so that Ellie can shoot them. After destroying every single one, the girl will come down to us. We give her a gun. From now on, Ellie will cover us always and everywhere. We pass to the end forward, where there is a gate behind the truck on the left side. Having made our way inside, we extract the cart from under the gate and transfer it to the opposite wall. We climb up, get to the window and watch how the marauders kill the unarmed. Finding nothing useful, they leave. We go upstairs and deal with the hunters. We get out through the office space.

Record collection. Perhaps among them there are rare specimens.

Heading to the next building. We penetrate inside from the right side, hiding behind a police car. We rise upward and we kill three opponents. We pass to another part of the building, go down and continue moving along the street. At the crossroads is another group of enemies, consisting of four hunters. We do not climb on the rampage, so two of them have firearms. We go to the right and seat the girl to the fire escape. We climb up, jump from the other side and head to the alley on the left side. Having crossed to the other side, we cross the road, hiding behind a police car. If desired, we can first clear the building from enemies. The gates are closed, so we go around them through the building on the right side. We go deeper into the alley, turn right and immediately enter the building. We go upstairs, go to the nearest room and climb the fire escape to the ledge. We move along it to the window, go inside and go into the next room. We get out of the window to the destroyed fire escape and continue to move along the ledge.

So we fell into one of the most dangerous traps. The noise is slowly starting to run infected.

Having penetrated inside, we are attacked. The survivors were Henry and his younger brother Sam. They mistook us for hunters and therefore tried to kill us as soon as possible. We also find out that they are the only ones from the group who survived. Nearby is the lair of these guys, follow Henry. We go down to the toy store. Then we go outside and go through the open door on the right side. After watching the enemies, we deal with them. We climb onto the truck, go forward a little and again retreat behind the shelter, as enemies will appear. After destroying them, we jump even higher and arrive at the den of the allies. Henry and Sam are just like us looking for Cicadas. They are waiting for the moment when the checkpoint guarding the passage to the bridge will be weakened. Most of the guards will go to sleep. After a little rest, we follow Henry. Going down, we sneak up on two and silently neutralize them in sync with Henry. Ours is the one on the left. We go outside and cross to the other side, hiding behind the cars and not falling under the spotlight. We kill a lone enemy, we drown out the generator. We deal with everyone who comes down to us.

Together we open the gate and at the last moment manage to hide from the enemy transport. We kill the enemy and plant all three on the truck. The ladder breaks, so we won’t be able to climb up. Henry and Sam decide to leave us. Ellie does not leave us and jumps back down. We open the gate and get inside. We clean the building from enemies, after which we pass into the hall and remove the cart that blocked the main door. Going outside, we quickly run after Ellie, avoiding obstacles. Having reached a dead end, at the last moment we decide to jump into the water.

Apparently, these clickers finally got someone.

Suburb

We meet Henry and Sam on the shore. Joel grabbed Henry’s gun and threatened to kill him for leaving us at a time of need. But this time we waited for help. Having studied the surroundings, we return to the allies. We climb up and help Henry lift the grate of the sewer pipe. When we reach the fork, take the right path. Having finished the inspection, we are reunited with friends again. We arrive at the area with water. We swim to the other end of the gate, dive and remove the pipe from the mechanism. Henry will open the gate, we swim on. We get out on land and climb the stairs on the left side. We drop down the raft at the fence. We deliver it to Ellie and transfer the girl to the other side to the generator. She will turn it on, and Henry and Sam will also be able to move in with Ellie. With the help of Henry, we climb up.

Walkthrough The Last of Us (Left behind, University, Hotel)

The game «The Last of Us» has become a huge breakthrough in the gaming industry. The vast majority of positive reviews characterize this game as well as possible. But what makes it different from other similar projects? After all, the game did not offer users anything radically new: the apocalyptic plot is banal, and the gameplay is reduced to the usual shootings and the destruction of monsters. But this is not for us to decide. Now we are starting to describe the passage of the game «One of Us» in Russian for those who are not able to purchase a console for the sake of one game, and those who have not been able to master the independent path through the dead world.

Prologue

The game starts out trite. Our attention is an ordinary average family. Playing as the daughter (Sarah), carefully inspect the house. Read the postcard by the TV, the newspaper on the table and watch the report, and then look out the window. After that, go to your father’s office and watch the cutscene.

You are now in control of the father (Joel). Once in Tommy’s car, you’re heading out of town, but you get into an accident. Take your daughter in your arms and follow your brother. According to his decree, turn into the alley, and through it head towards the bar. Tommy will stay behind to apprehend the infected while you continue through the back door. Run into the alley, illuminated by a lantern, and then without stopping we run along the path. At this moment, you will have a fateful meeting…

Part 1-3

Finally, we start playing for real. The main plot of the game begins 20 years after the death of Sarah (wow, our character is already almost 50).

Walkthrough «The Last of Us» — Part 1: «Quarantine Zone».

There should be no problems at this stage. We follow our partner Tess. We are faced with the task of finding a certain Robert who interferes with doing «business». Having climbed up the stairs near the white car, we get into the building. On the ground floor, everything is filled with spores, and our character will put on a gas mask. In the room, turn right and climb through the opening in the wall. On the way, do not forget to check the body for the presence of cartridges. We make a control shot to the head. We move on. We sneak up to the first of the infected and strangle him. We go around the rest on the left, after turning off the flashlight. We get out.

The second part is not particularly different. You find yourself in the market and find out that Robert is hiding in the shipyard on the docks. We run, we shoot, we fight. Save ammo whenever possible. In order to pass the gate, we plant Tess at the left wall. Another massacre. We’re moving through the warehouse. Kill enemies in stealth. A cramped room is perfect for this. We find Robert. First he will shoot back, and then he will try to run away. After a series of dialogues, we again have to follow our companion. Turn left at the bridge. Now we rise and enter the building on the left. Bypassing the enemy, strangle. We pass the corridor all the way to the last room and there we get out through the last window. After killing the enemies, we go down under the bridge.

And here’s the next part. We learn that the contraband to be delivered to the Capitol is Ellie, a little girl. While we are working alone, we must be careful. We leave the building and go to the left to the fence. Along it, then right into the alley. We move the trash can and climb up into the apartment. Here we wait for Tess. After that, we leave through the gap in the wall. We walk in a straight line, we will not be allowed to get lost. We start the generator (the slider at the bottom of the scale). We go further and reflect the attack. After scanning, it turns out that Ellie has been infected for 3 weeks.

Part 4

After such a «sudden» plot twist, the passage of «The Last of Us» begins to get more complicated. To get to the place we need, we will have to go through the «blockade detachments». We follow Tess to the nearest patrol. Then we shift to the left and start moving along the wall, not forgetting to follow the lanterns above. We move through the shelters until the next collision with the enemy in the building. When he turns away, neutralize. When running from cover to cover, do not forget to bend down. We don’t need any more fights. We get to the grate and break it out.

Follow Tess again. This is already so familiar that there should be no difficulties. In general, the passage of «One of Us» is more like a short story. You unwittingly follow a linear storyline instead of creating it yourself. After a collision with a nutcracker in a room with a bunch of doors, we spend knives with a clear conscience. They will all pay off. As you progress, do not forget to help your partner. After she distracts the clicker, throw the bottle in the opposite direction.

Having picked up a revolver and a piece of pipe, we begin to kill. We sneak up on all enemies from behind and cut them down. Having got out, we are looking for a truck. Near it we turn left into the next building. We kill opponents and drag the chest of drawers to the truck. After some simple actions, we again run inside. At the workbench, do not forget to modify weapons. Move on. We kill the runner with a Molotov cocktail, at the same time the nutcracker will come running, which will also burn. We run further, fighting off enemies. We go out to the roof and take the board, which we put between the buildings. Having reached the Capitol, we find out that the messenger is dead. Tess is infected and stays to cover for us. Joel and Ellie go to Bill to get a car from him and get to Tommy.

We go outside, go down to the subway, hiding from the machine gun. We pass through the wagons. To cross further, we go swimming. We find a raft and transport Ellie.

Part 5-7

After talking with our ward, we set off again. The passage of «One of Us» is transferred to the wild. Moving through the forest, we go out to the tower. To climb over the wall, we find a small shed, drag a board onto it and throw it onto the wall. We go further down the road. In the alley on the left, a nutcracker will run out to meet us, but it will explode on a trap. We climb the stairs to the truck, from it to the next fire escape, while not forgetting to take the board with us. We put it between buildings. After we go down again, we move carefully, crawling under the stretch marks. Move on. When we fall into a trap, you can not save ammo. After a while, help will arrive in the form of Bill.

Part 6 is entirely devoted to finding auto parts. We run after Bill, while not forgetting to search the area. We get to school. Here we use the tactics of «scorched earth». We throw bottles, and when the infected gather in a crowd, we burn them with a «molotov». In the battle with the boss, the first thing we do is take out a trifle — runners.

The seventh part is quite short. After getting out of the school, we get to the shelter of Frank — Bill’s partner. We find that hanged, but there is a car with a charged battery. We push the car out, simultaneously fighting off enemies. Saying goodbye to Bill and «leaving into the sunset.»

Part 8-10

Our heroes manage to spend most of the way in the car, however, before reaching the city, we encounter a problem — a huge traffic jam on the highway. The hero turns right and is ambushed by bandits. After we kill them all, we get out. Hiding behind the cars, we go around the hunters. We pass by the checkpoint through the bus. If you don’t want to get involved in another massacre, The Last of Us (updated version) walkthrough will allow you to hide in the building on the right, otherwise you will have to clear the street first, and then the building by floors. In the flooded area, we again get to the raft alone and transport Ellie to the bus. From there we get to the cafe, and there, using the board, we move to the hotel.

One of the most difficult parts that the passage of «Some of us» will throw us is the «Hotel» (hotel). We search the location. We move the ladder to the wall, above which there are no railings. On the right you will find the code for the safe from the first floor. We rise to the second floor, from there we get out through the window into the neighboring building. After that, we rise higher and higher. We open the elevator. Ellie climbs up and you fall into the water. The location is empty. To open the door, we look for a pass and start the generator.

This walkthrough «One of us» («Hotel») does not end there. We reach the kitchen along a straight corridor. At the right wall we install a ladder and climb up. We will be thrown out of there. After a short struggle, Ellie will arrive and commit the first murder in her life. We rise, we reach the restaurant. There we push the piano and climb up again. Here Joel will finally listen to the voice of reason and hand Ellie a rifle. To destroy all the enemies outside, we try to lure them into the open space under fire from Ellie. The girl’s ammo is infinite, unlike the player.

Parts 11-13

We move through the city, killing hunters along the way. The survivors who rioted in the city were able to get a jeep with an automatic turret. Now we have to hide from him. In one of the buildings we find another group of «refugees» — these are Henry and Sam. We follow Henry to their shelter, along the way shooting back from the mutants and hiding from the turret. To get out of the city, we will have to attack the checkpoint at night, when there are fewer guards.

The Last of Us (part 12) will begin with you and Henry taking out the first two guards. You get the one on the left. After that, hiding from the spotlight, we follow the generator, kill the guard and turn off the power. In complete darkness, we kill those who come down to us. After that, we open the gate. We plant all three of them upstairs, but the ladder breaks. Henry and Sam leave us, and Ellie comes back down. We go into the building and clean it from enemies. We run straight and get into a dead end. We jump into the water.

What will the passage of the game «One of Us» (part 13) bring us? And it is preparing us for another meeting with Henry and Sam, when our hero swims out of the river to the shore. Joel takes pity and does not kill Henry, who betrayed them. And not in vain. The heroes find their way through the sewers. At the fork we go first to the right. Back to «friends». In the area with water, we swim to the far end and repair the jammed mechanism. Henry opens the gate, and we, having reached the end, throw off the raft and deliver Ellie to us, who is repairing the generator. Henry arrives with his brother and helps us climb up.

Sniper

This is how you can name the passage of the game «One of Us» (part 14). Having got out of the sewers, we fall into a trap. The group is divided. Playing for Joel, we fight off enemies and get to the rest. Let’s follow Henry.

Having reached one of the streets, we find out that it is controlled by a sniper. We go on the left side. Here you can meet hunters, but it will be more difficult for a sniper to hit. Having reached the building, we kill the sniper and pick up the rifle. We help our group with her help. When the armored car already known to us arrives, we kill the person who will throw Molotov cocktails. We wait a little more and see that the infected come running to the noise from the explosion. We shoot them and leave.

This is followed by another series of dialogues and screensavers. Sam becomes infected, and Henry makes the difficult decision to kill his brother, after which he commits suicide.

Part 15-16

Here you could write: «after some time.» Passage of the game «One of us» (part 15) takes place at a hydroelectric power station. It’s autumn in the yard, and our heroes continue to look for Tommy. Near the car we find a good pistol with optics. With the help of dialogues, we learn some features of the relationship between Tommy and Joel. At the dam we rotate the valve, due to which one of the valves will open. We dive under the water and release the raft for Ellie, move on. And finally, we get to the factory gate, where we meet Tommy. We are waiting for a series of conversations, and then a brotherly «reconciliation», during which we save Ellie and his brother’s wife from bandits. But not everything is so simple.

Instead of going with Tommy to the Cicadas, Ellie escapes on horseback and the brothers follow her trail. After being ambushed, we deal with the bandits and go to the horses. On them we jump to the ranch, in which Ellie is hiding on the second floor. After the dialogue, we fight off the bandits and without Tommy we go to the laboratory of Cicadas. On this, you can complete the walkthrough of the game «One of Us» (part 16).

«University»

Another unpleasant moment during the game. The passage of the game «The Last of Us» (part 17) refers to the University of Colorado. It is with him that many players often have questions. On the territory we move to the center, and from there we climb the stairs, gradually dodging to the left. After passing along the corridor, we knock out the grate. We climb into the room in which we find a flamethrower and an electrical panel. It shows that the generator should be on the second floor. We go upstairs, turn on the generator and return. Having opened the gate, we run to the center of the territory and turn left. There, running around the building, we find another locked gate. The passage «The Last of Us» («University») implies that you must enter the building on the right. There you go up to the second floor, go outside and push the generator to the wire from the back of the gate. Turn it on. The path is clear.

Turn left into the archway, then right and jump over the fence. Near the laboratory itself at the main entrance we see a dumpster. With it, you can break through the gate and get inside. We examine the empty building and find two audio recordings, one of them says that everyone returned to Salt Lake City. Then unknown people appear and open fire on us. We run the same way we came. But Joel breaks off the ledge and falls down. The protruding pin breaks through it, and this ends the passage of «One of us» («University»).

Part 18-19

Winter has come. Walkthrough «The Last of Us» (updated version) will force you to play as Ellie. You are hunting animals in the forest with a bow. First you kill the hare, and then you start chasing the deer. Stay away from him. After two accurate hits, he will begin to move away from you. Follow him and he will lead you to the huts where you meet David and James. They offer to trade the deer carcass for antibiotics. James goes to get his medicines, but David stays with us. At this moment, the mutants attack. Hiding in the building, we barricade the windows and shoot back from the monsters. After a while, you will have to run away. Follow David. Having moved to another part of the building, you will face the same picture: survive by shooting back from the monsters. Here we learn the story of David. It turns out that it was because of his people that Joel got into this position. After the last monster, James will arrive and give us the medicine. But not everything is so simple. As soon as Ellie gets to Joel and injects him with drugs, the bandits return. Get on your horse and ride away to divert attention. When the horse is killed, go around the hill and go through the house. It is better to eliminate opponents with a bow. Get down to the pier, then move forward through the pipes. We get to the next building, after a short shootout we will be captured, and control will return to Joel.

We get up and leave the house. When the gate opens, we kill three bandits, the rest will run away. We overtake them and straighten them out. After that, we interrogate the survivors. The next morning we again play for Ellie: after a few dialogues we will be able to escape. Bypassing the enemies, we move along a previously known path (the game is linear). In the next room (cafe), David overtakes us. The fight begins. Your task is to crawl on your haunches, sneak up on him from the back and beat him with a knife. Most importantly, avoid areas with broken dishes. After 2-3 hits, control will pass to Joel. Bypassing the enemies quietly and removing the extra ones with the help of a bow, we get to the building where we find Ellie’s backpack. We go outside and see a burning building. By the time we get to the girl, she will have beaten the leader.

Spring

Another change of season marks the transition to the next part of the game. We are moving along the freeway, and then deja vu catches up with us. Due to the traffic jam, we turn right and reach an empty quarantine zone. We climb over the gate and try to climb into the building on the left. Then we follow Ellie. In the end, in the tunnel we encounter a large number of infected. After you kill everyone, move to the other side and help Ellie climb. Then swim again. We continue moving on the right side to the closed door. Again we move higher, the first to lift Ellie. In the next water zone we dive under the water, and at the fork we turn right. We climb the ventilation pipes and move to the very end. There we will find a raft.

Having transported the girl across the pond, we climb the stairs. Pick it up and stick it against the opposite wall. We climb and raise the ladder to ourselves. We climb even higher. Finally, we pull up the ladder again and put it on top of the failure. We start jumping over the vans. When you get stuck, Ellie will try to pull you out, but she will fail. Having got out of the flooded transport, we swim to the surface. There, people from Cicada are already waiting for us and deafening.

End

When you wake up, you will have a long conversation with Marlene. She will tell you that in order to make a vaccine against the virus, it is necessary that Ellie die during the operation. Naturally, the future of mankind is not worth the life of one little girl, and we set out to save her. Joel finds out from the guard where the operation is taking place and kills him. After that, we have to pathetically break through the crowds of enemies to the western part of the hospital and save Ellie at the last moment. We carry it in our arms to the elevator. Marlene makes a last futile attempt to stop us.

This completes the conscious playthrough of The Last of Us. Final — you play as Ellie and obediently follow Joel, talking about your past. Final video. The curtain closes.

Add-on

Some time later, an add-on to the game «The Last of Us» was released. It told about two time periods in Ellie’s life. The passage of «The Last of Us: Left Behind» is not so difficult. In one interval, you will find out the fate of Ellie and her friend’s relationship, with most of the time you will spend in the mall.
