A fan of The Last of Us 2 spots a nod to Joel that most players will miss unless they are looking for it, and the detail deserves appreciation.

The Last of Us 2 is critically acclaimed for many reasons, with its storytelling and Naughty Dog’s attention to detail both being consistent points of praise. Recently, a fan of The Last of Us 2 highlighted a detail that seemingly combines both of these strengths.

The Last of Us 2’s narrative, much like the first game, is built entirely around the relationship between Joel and Ellie. Instead of telling a story that is ultimately about love, though, the sequel focuses primarily on the concepts of violence and revenge. This is reflected in the tone of the game’s scenes, with both Ellie and the player constantly reminded of the tragic events that take place near the start of The Last of Us 2. As it turns out, one of these reminders is extremely subtle.

Early on in Ellie’s story, players will have to find a gate code, with gamers eventually coming across a member of the WLF that Tommy tortured for information. This dead member of Abby’s faction had eventually given up the info, writing the code in their own blood on the floor. The numbers can be seen in the image above, with the bottom portion of the code being 7302. However, the decision to frame these numbers upside down made Reddit user xX_melog_Xx see the name Joel.

does the gate code looks like « joel » is written in blood or am i seeing things from thelastofus

While this could simply be a case of pareidolia, with the player seeing exactly what they are hoping to, most commenters believe this was done intentionally. After all, The Last of Us 2 is full of subtle details and carefully hidden secrets that players have picked up on months and years after release. Further, Naughty Dog could have just shown the numbers facing upward, but the developer chose to frame the scene this way. Given how much sense it makes for Ellie to be seeing reminders of Joel everywhere she looks, spotting his name written in blood seems fitting.

While they do not provide a source, Reddit user Phoenix2211 says that a developer has already taken to Twitter to confirm players are meant to see Joel’s name during this scene. They also point out that this tactic was used by Naughty Dog in the past, as an Easter egg in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End saw a license plate incorporating the name Elena Fisher. With Naughty Dog already utilizing this trick in the Uncharted series, it seems even more likely that this is a proper reference to Ellie’s father figure.

With plenty of posts focusing on cool gameplay moments or funny The Last of Us 2 glitches, it is a nice change of pace to see discussions about the game’s many details. Next time gamers replay The Last of Us 2, they may want to look closely at the upside down gate code.

Joel is a complex and intriguing character in The Last of Us universe, with a character arc that goes through many emotional highs and lows.

The moment it hit the scene back in 2013 on the PlayStation 3, The Last of Us was hailed as a masterful achievement and big step forward for narrative possibilities in gaming. The theme was familiar, taking place in a post apocalyptic world with legions of infected creatures being nothing new to pop culture. However, what made the PS3 game special was the memorable characters within the story, each fully realized and well developed, with complete character arcs. Alongside Ellie, the other star of the show was Joel, a broken, rugged man trying to make it day to day in a harsh new world.

Joel, even prior to the outbreak, seemed to have lived a life of hard knocks. The man carries the weight of every hardship and personal loss on his shoulders, something exceptionally well performed by actor Troy Baker. While aggressive and ill-tempered, Joel is also full of compassion and willingness to help others, making him a three dimensional character with plenty of depth. He undergoes a lot in the span of the two The Last of Us games which Naughty Dog has created so far, a character arc which will be examined below.

The Death of Sarah/20 Years Later

When audiences were first introduced to Joel in the opening moments of The Last of Us, he seemed like a hard working man just trying to make ends meet. Seemingly a single father with no sign of his child’s mother in the picture, Joel lives day by day with his daughter, with whom he clearly has a strong connection. It doesn’t take long before the game kicks into high gear and the viral outbreak spreads throughout Joel’s hometown in the suburbs of Austin, Texas.

While trying to escape, Joel’s daughter Sarah is tragically killed, an event which would forever shape his personality and outlook on the world. It is unclear what exactly happened to Joel in the 20 years that passed from this moment, to when the rest of the game takes place, but it isn’t hard to fill in the gaps. Now much older and more bitter than ever, Joel almost seems numb to the world around him, having little reason to feel alive after the traumatic death of Sarah. This is of course until Joel accepts a smuggling job with his friend Tess, a decision which would forever change his life.

Meeting Ellie

As stated, Joel was a grizzled and reserved man at this point in the story. The last thing he wanted was to get close to people, let alone escort a teenage girl to a rendez-vous point. The young girl in question is named Ellie, and immediately sports a spunky, rambunctious attitude with sarcastic remarks to boot. At first, Joel seems at wits end with Ellie, dodging her questions and mostly brushing off her constant attempts at conversation. It’s not until Tess is killed, leaving Joel and Ellie to travel alone, that the two truly begin to bond. It is here that Joel slowly but surely begins to open up and show he can care for someone again.

The Last of Us organizes its storyline by dividing events across the four seasons of the year: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. With each passing season and further trials and tribulations, it becomes evident that Joel had become more comfortable around Ellie and has even grown to enjoy her company. He will begin to bring up past memories to share with her and even respond to her jokes, something which never would have happened at the beginning of their union. Ellie’s wit and charm slowly chipped away at Joel’s tough exterior, making him genuinely care for her throughout their year long journey across most of the United States. This newfound love in Joel’s heart would be tested however upon finally reaching their intended destination: the hospital in Salt Lake City.

Joel’s Choice

The entire purpose of the journey was to deliver Ellie to the Fireflies in Salt Lake City. The reason for this is that Ellie is somehow immune to the virus plaguing the world, so the hope was to harvest her DNA in an attempt to create a cure. The twist is that this process will kill Ellie, something which Joel was not aware of prior and a revelation he cannot live with. Throughout their travels, Ellie has grown to be a newfound daughter in Joel’s eyes. Joel pleads the leader of the Fireflies, Marlene, to find someone else. He is quickly restrained, not being given any say in the matter. Not wanting to lose two daughters in his lifetime, Joel brutally murders dozens of people, fighting his way to Ellie before escaping from the hospital.

Consequences of Joel’s Choice

While Joel’s decision to save Ellie was one fueled by love, it sadly had long lasting implications on the rest of his life. Ellie is immediately suspicious of Joel’s explanation for them having to leave the hospital, and when she does learn the truth, it permanently damages their relationship. Ellie no longer views Joel as a father figure and exchanges become awkward and tense, something which has clearly affected Joel’s emotional state. The narrative structure of The Last of Us 2 only makes this more painful by shifting between happier moments of Joel and Ellie, then back to their splintered relationship in the present.

Aside from emotional turmoil, Joel’s decision also yields fatal, physical ramifications. One of the men which Joel kills to save Ellie in the hospital had a daughter named Abby, who grows and makes it her life goal to avenge her father. She succeeds, killing Joel right in front of Ellie, removing the chance of them ever mending the damage done to their relationship. While Ellie has to live with that chance she never had, Joel seemed to be content for the first time in a long time, simply for the reason that he did have a chance. In a flashback scene, the last conversation between the two reveals that Ellie was willing to try and move forward, which is all Joel needed to hear after so long. In essence, it comes down to the core of who Joel was in The Last of Us: a damaged man with many challenges to face, but always hopeful and eager to find happiness.

The Last of Us 2 Joel’s death

Hello PS4 fans! Today we will discuss an interesting plot twist of one of the most sensational survivors.

The game Last of Us 2 gave the players a lot of unforgettable emotions. It makes you worry about the main characters, feel all the salt of what is happening, somewhere rejoice for the characters, and somewhere even cry.

Right now, what fans of the series are most interested in in The Last of Us 2 is Joel’s death.

Let’s think about it, but first I’ll tell you who Joel Miller is and what role the game has for him.

Contents

  1. Joel as a character in Last of us 2
  2. Death as a necessary measure
  3. But Miller is not leaving the game forever
  4. Why does The Last of Us 2 need to play as the traitor Abby?
  5. Now everything is clear

Joel as a character in the game Last of us 2

Joel is the main character of the first part. It is he who is the main conductor of a girl named Ella. He teaches her to survive in a world where an epidemic reigns. It is he who gives her weapons and teaches her how to defend herself. It is he who shows the girl the wrong side of life.

In the first part of The last of us, we get a good look at Miller’s story. According to books, dialogues and memories, it becomes clear that before the pandemic he had a daughter, Sarah, that the main character was a carpenter, he was going to start his own business.

But the epidemic ruined all his plans and also took his daughter away from him. In general, the developers show Joel as a positive character, but who also has a bunch of skeletons in the closet.

Fans of the game expected anything from the continuation, but definitely not that the main character would die at the very beginning of the story. The question arises by itself: why did the developers decide to bury this hero right away?

Death as a necessary measure

Miller’s murder occurs almost at the very beginning of The Last of Us 2. Abby kills him, and does it with particular cruelty in front of Ellie. The developers did all this for a reason. They wanted the players to hate this character from the first second.

After all, this creature takes the life of the audience’s favorite.

But most importantly, Neil Druckmann and his team decided to make fun of the fans. Not only do you have to watch the death of your favorite character, you also have to finish him off with your own hands. After all, at the time of the murder, you are switched to Abby. How do you like this turn? But it was done for good reason.

The developers aren’t stupid. They know how such plot twists affect the subconscious. This move is designed to get the players to like the hero, and then, together with Ellie, they begin to hate Abby so much that they would want to kill her.

But Miller doesn’t leave the game forever

Shortly after the murder, in Last of us we are shown a scene where Ellie sits on her friend’s grave, remembering the best moments. She vows to avenge him. At some points, Joel appears to her as a ghost.

Why does The Last of Us 2 need to play as Abby the traitor?

At some point, the authors of the game again force you to play for the cruel, soulless Abby.

At first, this is so disgusting that you want to throw away the joystick and delete the video game for good.

But up to this point, Ellie herself will increasingly be shown from the bad side, so you will gradually start to worry about the second girl as a character too. After all, you will have to play for Abby, which means that at least you will do everything so that she is not killed at the very first turn.

Everything is clear now

Now everything is in place. The way the story unfolds, the realities it reveals, all of this was originally conceived by the team of Nick Druckmann. All the murders, scenes with memories, desires to take one side or another, only show how strongly such a technique as immersiveness is used here. This is the effect when a video game makes you completely immerse yourself in the story.

And the developers of both parts of The Last of Us must be recognized as storytelling geniuses.

After all, they make you feel and sympathize not only with positive, but also with negative characters, they show that the fate of both is approximately the same. After all, even Ellie admits that everyone has their own truth.

And I hope you enjoyed this review, where we dealt with such a question as The last of us 2 Joel’s death. If so, then share it with your friends. In the comments to the article, write, how do you like this idea of the developers? Could it have been done differently, avoiding the death of the main character?

How The Last of Us Part II scenario explains Joel’s «softening» at the beginning of the game — DTF Games

Important

The material contains critical spoilers for the game.

On June 27, the author of the YouTube channel Suggestive Gaming, who generally did not like the direction of the story chosen by the authors (and the first game too), made a 37-minute essay in which he analyzed in detail the main complaints of the players to the plot and in most cases sided with the scriptwriters .

One of the most popular complaints about The Last of Us Part II’s story in recent weeks has been the opening scene. The players were outraged by the fact that Joel and Tommy trusted Abby, a girl who later committed the brutal murder of the protagonist of the first part.

According to the author of the video, Joel’s murder is justified not only from the point of view of the plot, but also from the moral point of view. Part II explains in detail that by saving Ellie and killing the Cicadas, he acted as a villain as well.

I am often told that Joel should have died a hero or sacrificed himself for someone else, not be beaten to death by a vengeful stranger. Many people forget that Joel is not a hero. He doesn’t deserve anything. He is selfish, merciless and did terrible things. […]

In the game world, Joel is simply getting paid by the character he did wrong to. Even Joel himself understands this very well. Just listen to his last words. He knows Abby has a speech. He knows what her intentions are. He doesn’t even ask why they want to kill him. Because he understands that there are many options.

Suggestive Gaming

At the same time, the scriptwriters of the game themselves have already stated that they do not condemn Joel, however, they believe that his death gives the story the necessary impetus, and the key characters — Ellie and Abby — a motive for further conflict.

Players should have felt the rage, disgust, and lack of Joel along with Ellie, since she almost stopped communicating with him two years before his death. At the same time, Joel remains a key character in the story, but already in flashbacks, and it is the memory of the last conversation with him that allows Ellie to get out of the circle of revenge.

When Joel and Tommy first meet Abby, she is near death: the girl is alone and is being chased by a mob of zombies, which partly helps her hide her real motivation.

Later, when Abby starts helping strangers, Joel, in the heat of battle, calls Tommy by name — perhaps already at this point having lost his guard or deciding that it is unlikely that someone will say something to one name. At that moment, he does not know that the stranger is part of a whole group.

Finally, after the battle is over, Tommy, in order to calm the frightened Abby, tells her his name and the name of his brother. After that she understands0117 who exactly met and freezes for a couple of seconds when she is called to get on the horse as soon as possible.

When Abby suggests to Tomia and Joel that they go to her friends’ hideout, they still don’t see it as a potential ambush: if it wasn’t for them, Abby would probably die — it’s nearly impossible to plan.

So Tommy relaxes and meets strangers who don’t look like a gang of thugs with an offer to drop by Jackson for resources.

Mel then introduces himself to Tommy and Joel, and they give their names back. And at this moment, Joel realizes that he was ambushed.

In the analysis of the plot of the game, Joel is most often attributed to carelessness, although it was not he himself who provided all the necessary information to Abby, but his brother.

Naughty Dog knew that this behavior of Tommy and Joel would raise questions, but if the characters took all the precautions, then the game would not have any plot. For the story to get off the ground, someone had to make a mistake.

The writers tried to make sure that this mistake was not a mistake of the story, but a mistake of the character. For starters, Joel’s vigilance was lulled by a combination of circumstances: Abby could hardly set up a snowstorm herself and gather a huge crowd of zombies, so the heroes did not suspect her of a threat.

Beyond this, however, Neil Druckmann and Halle Gross have written «softening» the people of Jackson in a series of memos. They say that a quiet life in the city has made many people more humane. The inhabitants of the settlement began to treat each other better and trust strangers more.

My boys are different here. Before Jackson, we were focused only on survival … But I didn’t like what they turned into. They began to behave like the people they were running away from. Now they are repairing roofs and digging trenches. It’s hard work, but every night they come inspired by this place. They have a community. Reason to be responsible.

from note

Later in the story, it turns out that Joel has also gotten used to a quieter life. When Ellie comes to his house, you can see that he spends a lot of his free time making wood crafts.

This is no longer the same smuggler that the players have seen before: he has clearly spent the last years furnishing his home. Not surprisingly, in the original version of the script, he also had a love interest.

@Timque

According to the author of Suggestive Gaming, the main problem of the game lies not in the introduction, but in the last chapters, where players must feel the characters whose death they have seen before — this does not work with all the heroes, because most of the time was devoted to the relationship between Abby and Owen.
