Resident Evil: Which Games Are Co-Op?

From spinoffs to main entries, there are quite a few Resident Evil titles fans can now play with one, or multiple friends. In the twenty-year-plus history of the series, about a third of these games offer multiplayer in some respect. The very first game actually had co-op in mind, but that idea was scrapped.

The following games feature co-op as a main feature and not as an afterthought. They also must be, more or less, featured in a main game scenario. So, while Umbrella Corps does have multiplayer, it isn’t exactly the same. These games are ordered by release date from furthest to nearest.

Updated June 2nd, 2021 by Tristan Jurkovich: In the twenty-year span of the series, not many games were co-op at least in the traditional sense. What was listed in the original entries are the core games one can team up with a buddy in order to slay zombies and/or other mutated masses. What is co-op though except a smaller portion of multiplayer?

That’s why it was decided to go back and look at every game in the series that not only had co-op but multiplayer features as well. It may seem natural to brush aside poorly received titles like Umbrella Corps, but maybe that’s the exact type of Resident Evil experience one might be looking for. There are no judgments here, only facts. So, let’s expand the list with more titles.

12/12 Resident Evil Outbreak

Release Date: December 11, 2003 (Japan)

Current Platforms: PS2

The very first Resident Evil game to offer co-op was on PS2 via Resident Evil Outbreak. It released in 2003 in Japan and year later in North America. That same year Japan also got an expansion which would again follow a year later in North America. The concept of this game was to play online with other people and escape Raccoon City as ordinary folks.

Players could assume the role of a waitress, or reporter for example. Each character had their own skills and the best one to play as solo was the cop, Kevin Ryman. That’s because he was better armed than the rest. However, the more people one had, the easier the game was like a real co-op experience. It was a little too ahead of its time for the PS2’s online infrastructure.

11/12 Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles

Release Date: November 13, 2007

Current Platforms: Wii, PS3

The next co-op game would be awhile after that as Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles did not launch until 2007 for the Wii. It was a Wii title first which was followed by an HD remaster on PS3 in 2012. The game went through Resident Evil 0, the GameCube remake of Resident Evil, and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. It was an on-rails light-gun game that supported two players locally.

10/12 Resident Evil 5

Release Date: March 13, 2009

Current Platforms: PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Switch, PC, Shield Android TV

While those two games did have co-op, they were spinoffs. Fans consider Resident Evil 5 as the first real co-op game in the series. It released in 2009 on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

It featured the return of Chris Redfield with his new partner Sheva. It was built with co-op in mind from minute one, but players could still play it alone with Sheva acting with AI. Those that played it solo had a lot of complaints about how poorly the AI was balanced though.

9/12 Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles

Release Date: November 17, 2009

Current Platforms: Wii, PS3

This was another light-gun, on-rails experience. It released on the Wii in 2009 and it covered Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil Code: Veronica, and some new content as well. It too would get a PS3 upgrade years later. It didn’t change the formula too much in that it felt more like an expansion than anything else. That said it did review fairly well despite it not being a revelatory experience.

8/12 Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D

Release Date: June 28, 2011

Current Platforms: 3DS

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D released in 2011 on 3DS, a few months after the system’s initial debut. It combined elements from the Mercenary missions from the fourth and fifth game and turned them into a co-op experience. It was kind of like Monster Hunter but with Resident Evil. Playing through scenarios from Resident Evil 5 was impressive for the hardware, but there wasn’t enough there to make it standout. That is to say the reviews were average.

7/12 Resident Evil: Revelations

Release Date: February 7, 2012

Current Platforms: PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, 3DS, Wii U, Switch, PC

The sequel to this game would include standard co-op throughout the entire game and across two campaigns. This game was heralded as a return to horror for the franchise in 2012, starring Jill in a single-player adventure. However, there was also Raid Mode which was essentially a horde style of multiplayer. One could play it alone or with a co-op teammate.

6/12 Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City

Release Date: March 20, 2012

Current Platforms: PS3, Xbox 360, PC

The campaign is single player only, but there is a versus four-player co-op mode that pits the USS against the U.S. Special Ops teams. It’s an option but this 2012 PS3 and Xbox 360 game was not good then and it is definitely not good now. A better multiplayer focused experience can be found in the pack-in for the Resident Evil 3 remake aka Resident Evil: Resistance. That was players fighting through waves of monsters while someone else controlled them. It’s not strictly the best co-op example, but it still counts.

5/12 Resident Evil 6

Release Date: October 2, 2012

Current Platforms: PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Switch, PC

Another poorly reviewed Resident Evil game from 2012 was the sixth main installment. This expanded the idea from Resident Evil 5’s co-op even more by offering three distinct campaigns.

Players could go through the stories of Jake and Sherry, Leon and Helena, and Chris and Piers. While nice to have three games in one sort of, it was an example of quality lacking in the excess of quantity. Playing with a friend does help alleviate some of the tedium.

4/12 Resident Evil: Revelations 2

Release Date: February 24, 2015

Current Platforms: PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Switch, PC

This also had multiple campaigns, but in Resident Evil: Revelations 2, they switched off between chapters. Players got to finally control Claire Redfield again along with her new tagalong Moira. Barry also made a return for the first time since the first Resident Evil and the first time he was actually playable. An even younger girl, Natalia, followed him around.

After the fiasco that was Resident Evil 6, this was trying to throwback to some classic gameplay styles. The first Revelations game did this as well and technically had co-op but only in the multiplayer mode. It’s worth mentioning here because the Raid Mode is fun, but it doesn’t need its own dedicated entry.

3/12 Umbrella Corps

Release Date: June 21, 2016

Current Platforms: PS4, PC

This 2016 spinoff came out of nowhere and is not remembered by most. It doesn’t even have Resident Evil in the title. It was the first full release in the series that was dedicated to multiplayer only without any kind of campaign gimmick. Similar to other shooters, like Call of Duty, it features various modes to play against hordes of other players solo or with teams. It is one of the worst games reviewed on Metacritic.

2/12 Resident Evil Resistance

Release Date: April 3, 2020

Current Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC

This was a separate game that was included with the purchase of Resident Evil 3’s remake in 2020. Players assumed the role of teenagers trapped in an Umbrella experiment wherein one person would be controlling the opposing side.

A good example to liken this game to would be Evolve since that saw players cooperating against one single player with overpowered odds. This game was reviewed decently but support for it ended fast and the player base soon vanished.

1/12 Resident Evil Re:Verse

Release Date: Summer 2021

Current Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC

This is the latest multiplayer game in the franchise which came free with Resident Evil Village. The core mode is a death match type of scenario. What sets it apart from other multiplayer focused entries is the fact that the game is cel-shaded, giving it a distinct look.

It also has some classic villains and heroes from the series. On the hero side there is Leon, Chris, Jill, Claire, Ada, and Hunk. On the villain, or Bioweapon side, there is the Fat Molded, Hunter Gamma (γ), Nemesis-T Type, Jack Baker, and Super Tyrant. While people can download it right now, the game is not out in full yet. There was a beta period that received middling impressions.

Resident Evil Revelations 2 Review

For the first time, Resident Evil Revelations 2 is playable on a Nintendo console and, for the most part, it is a welcome addition to the Switch’s rapidly growing library!

The story kicks off with Claire Redfield and her colleague Moira Burton being kidnapped and imprisoned on a remote island. Both characters have been fitted with a fear-detecting, colour-changing bracelet, and are being watched by the “Overseer” – a setup that wouldn’t feel out of place in a Saw movie. Unlike the first Revelations title, you will take control of both characters as you attempt to find your way off the island to safety.

This character switching mechanic can create some tense moments during gameplay as both Claire and Moira have their own specific skills, and you will need to switch between the two on the fly as the situation demands it. Moira is against using a gun, so can only melee enemies with a crowbar, but she does have a torch that can be used to blind enemies to stagger them – as well as it being particularly useful to find otherwise hidden items. You will also need to make use of both characters to solve some of the puzzles in the game; there is a scenario in the middle of the game that sees you both trapped in a room with rotating blades coming towards you, and you will need to switch between both characters to successfully escape.



Similar to Resident Evil Revelations, Revelations 2 does see the action split into episodes and told from the perspective of two main characters. The second of these will be familiar to fans of the series, with Barry Burton finding himself on a boat to the island responding to a distress call that his daughter Moira makes in the first chapter of Episode 1. Upon landing on the island, Barry meets Natalia – a somewhat creepy young girl who possesses some rather extraordinary powers. Similar to the Claire and Moira, you will switch between these two characters during your playthrough, with Barry playing the shoot first, ask later role and Natalia being used to crawl through holes to access areas that the grown-ups can’t and to use her powers to see enemies through walls. Natalia does have another power that is particularly useful in the later chapters, but I’ll leave that for you to discover – it’s probably one of the best uses of the character switching mechanic in the game!

The addition of the character switching ability also opens up another avenue for play – local co-op! You can play the campaign mode of Resident Evil Revelation 2 with a friend on your Nintendo Switch system – although using a single Joy-Con each does have its drawbacks due to the loss of the second analogue stick. It may cause some arguments though – as you will have to decide who gets to do all the shooting!

Although there are fewer episodes in Revelations 2 than its predecessor, with four in total plus two bonus episodes, these are longer – so you’re looking at a similar playtime across the two games. This is more than likely down to the fact that Revelations 2 was developed for consoles, rather than specifically for a handheld like the original. This change results in improvements across the board, with the controls feeling tighter now that they have been designed for a traditional controller, and the environments and characters looking a lot better (and more terrifying for it) due to the ability to increase the textures and use of lighting to further accentuate the horror of this seemingly abandoned island facility.


Really Barry? You sure knew how to treat your kids!


The island, unlike the Cruise Ship setting of the first game, features a lot of open areas for you to explore – which also means there aren’t as many close encounters between you and the infected in this game. However, don’t think the increased distance between yourself and the enemy will always work in your favour – the infected are much quicker in this game and are a lot more intelligent. Luckily, ammo is easier to find in this entry as are the ingredients to craft your own explosives. Similarly to the Switch version of Resident Evil Revelations, motion controls are again available if you so wish in this game – and again they work rather well! If you get caught by one of the undead abominations you can shake your Joy-Con to break free from the clutches of evil and aiming with the right Joy-Con also works rather well once you’ve got used to it. The IR sensor also sees some use here, with the ability to reload your weapons performed by tapping the bottom of the right Joy-Con as if you were loading another clip into your weapon – although the novelty soon wore off when I found it much easier to just press the button, especially during frantic moments when time was crucial!

Aside from the main campaign, the Raid mode from the previous entry makes a welcome return here – offering further multiplayer fun. Unlike the campaign, you can play this mode both online and off, even going solo if you so wish. This can become a timesink, and is rather enjoyable with other players – with unlockable costumes, skills and weapons for you to acquire as you play through the scenarios on offer.



I avoided both of the Resident Evil Revelations games when they originally released, after having been left with a sour taste in my mouth from Resident Evil 5 after the classics that were Resident Evil‘s 1 through 4. How wrong I was! Whilst the mainline series had a dip in form with both 5 and 6, the Revelations spin-offs were holding their own and – now that they are both together on the Switch at a reasonable price – you’d be as mad as the Overseer to miss out on them!

Resident Evil Revelations 2 Review

Summary

Resident Evil Revelations 2 takes everything from the first game and improves upon it. Although I am torn between which location I prefer (Cruise Ship vs Island facility) I feel that this sequel has benefitted from being developed for consoles. The Revelations spinoff series has produced arguably two of the best Resident Evil games since Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube, and now we can finally experience them both together on a Nintendo console!

Regarding the title, «why is it called Revelations 2, and links to
no previous game?» — learn to think a little logically and
understand! Revelations, i. e. Revelations in Russian, are, as it were,
previously untold stories about the adventures of well-known heroes.
Hence this optional connection between the series.
I didn’t like the co-op trend since RE5, even if the partner is AI.
If Capcom is positioning RE as horror action, then co-op is not to hell
needed, IMHO.

Capcom tried hard to drown this game. Resident Evil: Revelations 2 is a great project, but cheap, cut to pieces, and clumsily sewn together. Just like local monsters with limbs sticking out of nowhere.

The story of the new Resident Evil develops from two directions. The terrorists kidnap the girls, Claire and Moira, take them to an abandoned island, put on mysterious bracelets and lock them in dark casemates. When the preparations are over, the experiment begins on them. The doors open, Claire and Moira are released and trudge forward under the eyes of security cameras, trying to survive and not go crazy. The rest of the people here have turned into fast, aggressive zombies.

Six months later, Barry, Moira’s father, arrives on the island with a strong desire to find his daughter and punish the kidnappers. He arrived, thoroughly prepared, fully armed, but immediately upon arrival he meets a girl named Natalya, who follows him.

Fortunately, Natalia is not a burden, but a useful assistant. Much has changed on the island in six months. Zombies have either dried up or mutated into monsters. Shooting at monsters is just wasting ammo. But Natalya sees them from afar and points to weak spots, which allows Barry to sneak up on them from behind or, if it doesn’t work out, shoot right into the weak spot.

Moira, in turn, complements Claire. A staunch pacifist, the girl refuses to pick up firearms, but works great with a tire iron and a flashlight. With light, she reveals hiding places and blinds zombies, and finishes them off with a crowbar or uses a tool for its intended purpose, to open boarded doors and locked chests.

Claire and Barry act as the main strike force, covering their vulnerable assistants with a variety of firearms. They can walk while aiming, dodge attacks and finish off the fallen with knives. There are few ammo. Their shortage is felt even at the normal level of difficulty, while on the hard one you have to rely on edged weapons, saving cartridges for meetings with bosses or especially strong monsters.

Exploration of locations plays a key role in the matter of survival. Each room must be carefully searched and inspected, looking for hiding places, opening lockers, breaking drawers in the hope of finding something useful. Individual materials can be combined to create either projectile weapons (such as explosive bottles) or first aid to stop bleeding and wipe up mucus. Some monsters have the detrimental ability to explode, blinding everyone around them with their rich inner contents.

The story is divided into 4 episodes with two missions each. Claire and Moira try to find the mysterious experimenter and fight their way across the island to him. And Barry and Natalia follow their trail six months later, which passes through a prison, a fishing village, a city, a laboratory and other «exotic» places, including sewers. If it were not for the color of the abandoned Soviet settlement, it would be quite sad.

In the first two episodes, partners are taught to work together, but Moira and Natalya are still perceived as walking detectors to detect hiding places and secrets (something, but there are plenty of hidden saucers, drawings, insects and other nonsense to get the corresponding trophies). The main burden falls on Claire and Barry. There are almost no mysteries.

But the third episode and the fourth feel completely different. There are mysteries at every turn. The paths of the partners now and then diverge, and it is necessary to control both, cover the partner and warn him of the impending danger.

The third episode is, in principle, the best part of Revelations 2. Very harmonious, where battles alternate with puzzle solving and careful exploration of the territory. The finale makes us look forward to the beginning of the fourth episode … And here it is, just very uneven.

The reason for its unevenness is explained by the fact that two large pieces were cut out of the game live in order to offer them separately later. And without them, history is not perceived as a whole work.

Claire and Moira’s line intersects with Barry and Natalia’s in the finale — it’s obvious from the very beginning. But the plot does not provide answers to two important questions: what happened on the island in the interim, during these six months; and how Natalya got her powers and ended up on the beach the moment Barry arrived. They are answered by two «extra» episodes — «Description of a Struggle» and «Little Woman», not included in the body of the main story. And they, among other things, have a very entertaining gameplay.

For example, in the Description of a Struggle, people who survive on the island for six months do not have the opportunity to survive in the usual way. To do this, they need to look for supplies that are spent with each reboot. Any meat will do for supplies, even a rabbit, a mouse or an overgrown cockroach.

«Little Woman» is dedicated to Natalya, before she gained her supernatural powers. She is assisted by a ghost girl who cannot be seen by monsters, but is unable to interact with physical objects. This chapter forces you to constantly hide behind cover and use smoke grenades. Pretty boring (like any stealth where the hero has only one ability — to sneak), but with a few very interesting scenes.

«Superfluous» episodes have clear lines of separation. They made beautiful CG videos for them. They’re perfect for slipping into the gaps between the four main episodes as small offshoots, and are of little value as an add-on when the ending is already known.

Graphics were sacrificed to some unknown god. The game, designed for PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4, looks much worse than Resident Evil 5. The art style is boring. For the first time in the series, the hero models are made sloppy and inexpressive, apparently to match the gray environment. Ada Wong will simply disdain to come to this island. Jill Valentine from the view of the local fishing village jumps from the rocks into the sea and will try to swim to the mainland.

The main justification for Resident Evil: Revelations 2 is the price. It costs quite a bit, and for this money you will get an excellent game for about 10-12 hours of passage, with interactions of different heroes unique for the series, with puzzles and exploration of locations, with saving ammunition and many secrets. Finally, there is the «Raid» mode. Game within a game.

There are more than a dozen heroes to choose from in The Raid, some of which are blocked for the time being. They differ not only in appearance, but also in active and passive abilities and development system. Someone in the early stages barely survives. Others can carry a lot of weapons right from the start, but their skills aren’t exactly useful.

One or two heroes (again, in split-screen mode, online co-op is not provided) are sent on a mission where they need to kill zombies within a small location. Simple at first. Then fiery and icy, exploding, accelerated, invisible, toxic, sucking out vital energy. In some ways, this is reminiscent of Diablo, when familiar enemies, having received several harmful abilities, turn into serious opponents. You have to carefully choose weapons, do not get hit, open chests with more powerful guns, improve their performance with plug-ins, and so on, setting off to storm high levels of difficulty.

This mode is slightly corrupted by microtransactions. You can buy weapons, heroes, costumes for them, stones for rebirth in case of death, so that progress is not lost. But the Raid is fine without this paid junk.

Diagnosis

Revelations 2 is an example of unrealized features. It’s a great co-op game, but it only has local co-op in split screen mode. This is an interesting story, but the gaps in it are suggested to be filled after passing. There are plenty of incentives to come back here: unlocking hero costumes and weapons, color filters and new modes, of course, there are collectible figurines and pictures. In addition, you need to accumulate points for the development of heroes, improving their skills, so that later it will be easier at high difficulty levels. However, the campaign forces you to run through the same gray corridors over and over again. Moreover, the action of even “extra” episodes takes place in well-known locations, which Claire and Moira first ran through, followed by Barry and Natalya.

If you can handle bad graphics, have a liking for games like Resident Evil 5, The Evil Within or Dead Space, then you’ll probably enjoy Revelations 2. The project is cheap, but skillfully put together, with a long, varied, sometimes unusual campaign.
