Review: Razer Raiju Tournament Edition Controller — Simply the best

Whether you’re gaming on a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, the controller you’re playing with matters. Nowadays, it’s largely accepted that an asymmetrical thumbstick layout is better than the traditional symmetrical one. However, when it comes to the PlayStation 4, your choices are rather limited. Let’s say that you want a device along the lines of the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller. Beforehand — aside from going with a modified standard PlayStation 4 DualShock 4 controller — you had no other options.

A few weeks ago, Razer announced the Razer Raiju Ultimate and Tournament Edition wireless controllers for PlayStation 4 and PC. The Raiju Tournament Edition is geared towards the eSports market because it features hair triggers and additional bumpers on the top and back. Any gamer looking for an experience similar to the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller on PlayStation 4 should consider picking one up. The asymmetrical thumbsticks are the highlight here.

The bumpers are also remappable. For example, let’s say that you prefer the back paddles to be mapped a particular way for a racing game versus a shooter. You can quickly connect the controller to the companion application, and make all the adjustments you want, including vibration strength.

Unlike the wired Xbox One controllers Razer offers, the Raiju Tournament Edition features a companion application for iOS and other platforms. This allows you to wirelessly adjust the controller’s settings. This is one of the most significant innovations because the Raiju Tournament Edition features Bluetooth. Unfortunately, all of the company’s Xbox One controllers don’t support this because it seems that Microsoft doesn’t allow competing wireless products. This alone gives the Raiju Tournament Edition a massive edge.

Unfortunately, the €199.99 Raiju Ultimate features symmetrical thumbsticks, but comes with additional features like interchangeable thumbsticks and a removable D-pad. The plastic used on the bumpers also feels more premium than what’s found on the Raiju Tournament Edition. Lastly, the metal thumbsticks and Razer Chroma lighting are also missing. As a result of this, the Raiju Tournament Edition costs €50 less, but by no means is it a low-quality product. It’s actually better than the Raiju Ultimate in many ways.

The first factor that immediately stands out is the superb build quality. Not only is it lighter than the Raiju Ultimate, but it has a cleaner look. There are less buttons dotted across the controller, and this makes it a little smaller. This means that the Raiju Tournament Edition is much more comfortable to hold, and feels almost identical to the Xbox Elite Controller in many ways.

Just like the Raiju Ultimate, we rigorously tested out the Raiju Tournament Edition with a PlayStation 4 Pro and PC. Playing Bloodborne, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Destiny 2, God of War, Nioh, and Spider-Man definitely put the thumbsticks and triggers to good use. There were vigorous bumper and button presses involved. Not once did we notice any unregistered presses or other mechanical issues indicating a problem with quality. However, these issues tend to show up after the first month or so, so we’ll continue testing both products.

The Raiju Tournament Edition features proper bumpers and triggers, which feel like those found on the Xbox Elite Controller. They aren’t the shallow and small ones that come with the standard DualShock 4.

The only issue we have with the Raiju Tournament Edition is the materials used. Why couldn’t such an expensive product feature metal thumbsticks and silver plastic like the Raiju Ultimate? This controller comes in at €149.99, it should look it too because it’s the same price as the Xbox Elite Controller.

Overall, the Raiju Tournament Edition is a better product than the Raiju Ultimate. This is solely due to the fact that it’s a little smaller, lighter, and features asymmetrical thumbsticks. In our opinion, every PlayStation 4 gamer should buy the Raiju Tournament Edition because it’s by far the best controller on the market for those who prefer that platform.

Razer Raiju Tournament Edition Controller

Unlike the standard Microsoft controller warranty for ninety days, the Raiju Tournament Edition come with a full year. This should give users more confidence in their purchasing decision.

The score of 9/10 is an average of various factors. We gave the build quality compared to price a 9/10, the added physical features a 9/10, the shape and size of the controller 9/10, and the software to customize the experience a 9/10. The average of these four figures comes to 9/10.

Razer Raiju Tournament Edition Review

By Pointus Blankus on 26th July 2019

The Razer Raiju Tournament Edition is Razer’s solution to tackle the problem that many of us PS4 competitive gamers face. Those who compete on the PS4 absolutely love what the console has to offer, however if there’s one department where Xbox gamers have an upper-hand, it’s the controller. The truth is that the standard PS4 controller is great for casual gaming, but that’s about it. There is a lot wrong with the dualshock. Simply put, for extended gaming sessions at a competitive level, the out-of-the-box PS4 controller will just not fit the bill. Whilst there are many companies that provide controllers that are designed for eSports, the Raiju TE ticks certain boxes that you didn’t even know needed ticking. The Raiju TE takes PS4 controllers to whole new heights, and whilst there are some features that are lacking compared to what the competition is offering, the Razer peripheral has now become my number one controller for anything FPS-related.

The purpose of any eSports controller is to help you improve your performance when compared to using a stock controller. With the Raiju TE, this is definitely the case. The most obvious difference between the Razer’s offering and the dualshock is the overall design. Sony’s standard offering is considerably smaller, lighter and has a thumbstick layout that is just not fit for eSports. To put it into perspective, the Raiju TE weighs over 320g, whereas Sony’s controller is approximately 215g. Although this doesn’t seem like a huge leap, for a gaming controller this is quite significant. The issue isn’t that the dualshock isn’t comfortable. The problem is that Sony’s offering is just too light. The additional weight that the Raiju TE possesses hits the sweet spot; the extra 100g won’t tire you out. There are one or two competitors to the Raiju TE that allow the gamers to change the weight of the controller. Although it’s a shame that the Raiju TE doesn’t have something similar, it is not a gamechanger.

Currently, the Raiju TE is sold for a steep £149.99. It therefore is on the high-end of some of the eSports controllers that exist for the PS4. However, if you consider the variety of features that the controller has above and beyond its competitors, the price tag is justified. At this price however, this is clearly not a controller for the casual gamer. Having said that, even casual gamers now get a lot of exposure to such gaming peripherals simply because pro gamers and streamers use controllers like the Raiju TE on stream. I am sure a lot of casual gamers (many of whom also care about maximizing their performances on CoD, Fortnite, R6: Siege etc.) will also save up to invest in eSports controllers. I would highly advise that those casual gamers also strongly consider the Raiju TE for a variety of reasons.

Firstly, the Raiju TE is designed to bridge the gap between the excellent Xbox controller and the poorly-designed PS4 one. I personally love what the Xbox controller has to offer. It’s shape fits better in my hand. The thumbstick layout is crucial and the Xbox controller has the better design. As mentioned before, the weight is also important. The Raiju TE takes inspiration from the Xbox controller by providing a controller that almost feels similar to the Xbox One pad. There are clearly noticeable differences, but the Raiju TE essentially takes what’s best from the Xbox pad and merges it with what’s best about the dualshock. With this in mind, the Raiju TE is also a significantly larger controller compared to the dualshock. Most importantly, the left thumstick is placed near the top left side of the controller, essentially being swapped with where the D-Pad would usually sit on the dualshock. This results in a considerably more comfortable gaming experience. It just isn’t comfortable to have your left thumbstick as low as your right one. The design of the Raiju TE is therefore exactly I’d expect from an eSports controller.

In addition, the Raiju TE contains four extra buttons that are programmable. Two of these are positioned at the back of the controller and are perfectly positioned to sit under where your fingers would typically rest. The other two are near the L2 and R2 triggers. I found these slightly less useful (although at the time of writing this review, I haven’t had enough practice with them). Technically, you could argue that the introduction of these four programmable buttons means that you don’t need the face buttons at all. I am sure that hardcore pro gamers would take advantage of all four, however I found myself primarily finding a lot of use just for the two buttons on the back. The benefit of these buttons is that you don’t need to let go of your right thumbstick to press face buttons. In shooting games, the right stick is your aim. You want to always have control of your aim and never let that go. Using a traditional pad, if you want to crouch, jump etc., you’d need to let go of the right thumbstick for half a second to press a face button. That half-second could be the difference between a kill or death. Having constant control of your aim is extremely important when competing at the highest levels.

Whilst other competitor eSports controllers also offer similar functionality, the Raiju TE is the most comfortable implementation that I have experienced. The buttons on the back are so perfectly positioned, that I haven’t had to re-adjust the way I hold my controller in order to take advantage of the new buttons. Where the Raiju TE shines over its competition is how you program the buttons. Whilst other controllers require you to use a tool to carry out a variety of actions to remap the buttons/paddles on the back, Razer’s offering lets you do all of that through an app on your phone. Once you have the app installed, you can easily connect the controller to your phone via Bluetooth and simply re-program what the additional four buttons represent. This is much faster and considerably less intrusive than using a tool to carry out the same effect. There are also other options in the app that let you control various features of the controller including the vibration settings.

The trigger stops are also an essential feature of the Raiju TE. Razer has made switching these on and off the simplest out of any other controller that I have used. Trigger stops are mechanics that ensure that your L2 and R2 triggers don’t travel all of the way down when you press them. Instead, they will go down only as far as required to shoot your gun. The benefit of this is realized in a shooting game if you’re using a gun that isn’t fully automatic. Trigger stops essentially allow you to tap the trigger at a much faster rate. I tested tapping the trigger for a whole minute with and without the trigger stops activated. My rate of fire almost doubled when the trigger stops were switched on. Even if you don’t use a single-shot/semi-auto gun, you’ll find it extremely useful to switch it on since you may need to whip out your pistol during a firefight. In that situation, the winner could often be the one who can fire the pistol the quickest. My favourite use of the trigger stops has been whilst playing Rainbow Six: Siege. There is nothing quire like a combination of an activated trigger stop with Caveira. Her pistol already deals enough damage, but combined with the Raiju TE trigger stops, it may as well be an automatic pistol! Other controllers will require you to use a tool to activate the trigger stops. The Raiju TE just contains two switches, one for each trigger. The implementation of the trigger stops is perfect and you won’t even accidentally flip the switches.

Whilst the aforementioned features are delivered really well on the Raiju TE, some gamers may argue that those features still exist (in some capacity) in other cheaper controllers. What sets the Raiju TE is the face buttons and compatibility with PC.

Firstly, the face buttons are truly the best I have used in any controller on any console. There is a satisfying click that the Raiju TE provides, that other controllers simply don’t. The feedback that the Raiju TE gives you is something I didn’t even know I needed. Now that I have experienced it, I cannot go back to anything else. It is the equivalent of going from a stock keyboard to a gaming keyboard with proper mechanical switches. There is no real way to explain the satisfaction had when pressing the face buttons of the Raiju TE, it’s just something that every gamer needs to experience in order to appreciate it. None of Razer’s competitors come close to providing such tactile face buttons, probably because nobody else thought it was necessary. In theory, for shooting games, these face buttons aren’t needed as much since you’ll be using the programmable buttons. However, considering you’re paying a lot of money for this controller, you’d want to make it your controller for every game. Playing FIFA 19 using the Raiju TE has been an absolute treat and it’s largely down to the feedback I get from the face buttons.

Secondly, the Raiju TE is not just PS4-compatible. In fact, there is a switch at the back of the controller with three modes: PS4 BT, USB, PC BT. This means that you can connect the controller to the PS4 either using a wired or wireless approach (for the wired, the controller also comes with a 2m braided cable that can be detached). You can also use the controller for PC and in wireless mode if necessary. If by any chance you’re into PC gaming, the Raiju TE therefore becomes an ideal peripheral for certain games on the PC (e.g. Rocket League). Naturally, for shooters, you’d want to use a keyboard and mouse. I tested the Raiju TE on my laptop with Rocket League and there was no noticeable lag. It really helped that the single switch at the back of controller is all that was required to change the console.

The battery life is also where the Raiju TE shines above and beyond the standard PS4 controller and even its competition. The standard dualshock contains between 4-8 hours of battery life. I have gaming sessions that last longer than that! Simply put, that alone makes the dualshock a problem unless you want to play with a wired connection. The Raiju TE however has a battery life that lasts up to 19 hours. Upon testing it, I found it required charging after about 15 hours (perhaps it was because I also had the Razer Kraken headset plugged into it), however even that is a significant leap compared to the stock controller.

Unfortunately, there are certain features that are exclusive to Razer’s Raiju Ultimate Edition controller. As an example, the Raiju TE doesn’t have interchangeable sticks – a massive drawback since I do consider this as a crucial requirement. The Raiju TE also doesn’t have the chroma lighting, although I would much rather have a better battery life than chroma lighting effects. In order to take advantage of these additional features, you’ll need to shell out an additional £50. Whether you go for the Ultimate Edition will also depend on where you prefer your left thumbstick to sit, since the Ultimate Edition positions it in the same location as a standard dualshock.

The Razer Raiju Tournament Edition for PS4 has quickly become my go-to controller for every single game I play on the PS4. As an eSports controller, apart from the lack of interchangeable sticks (this can be overcome with a set of KontrolFreeks), the Raiju TE is the best controller that I have used to date. However, even as a standalone controller for casual, non-FPS gaming, this is the most comfortable and convenient (due to its large battery size) option that I have also used. I simply cannot see myself going back to a standard PS4 pad. Although £149.99 is a steep price, if you’re looking to join the eSports scene as a serious competitor, you’ll need to invest big no matter option you go with. As things stand, the Razer Raiju Tournament Edition is the best controller that money can buy for PS4 competitive gaming.

Razer is one of the few gaming peripheral manufacturers that produces licensed controllers for the PlayStation and Xbox consoles. The brand’s line of gadgets includes devices for PS4 and Xbox One, and recently a gamepad for Xbox Series X|S appeared — Razer Wolverine V2.

This review is about the Razer Raiju Tournament Edition compatible with PlayStation 4 and PC. Based on the name, the controller is designed for use in eSports tournaments, and given its capabilities, I readily believe that it can become a reliable tool for victory.

Razer also offers the PS4-compatible Raiju Ultimate controller, which features Razer Chroma lighting, interchangeable stick sets and a protective case.

Packaging and appearance

I continue to explore Razer’s line of pink gadgets, so my sample is housed in a box that combines pink and gray shades.

The front shows a gamepad and marks the main platform it is intended for. The back and sides of the box are filled with promotional images and lists of the device’s features: wired and wireless connectivity, mecha-tactile keys, textured grip, and so on.

The flip-top lid reveals the inside of the package, where the Razer Raiju Tournament Edition controller is embedded in polyethylene foam. On the inside of the cover there is an additional layer of protection that prevents damage to the sticks.

A separate pocket contains the instruction manual, a letter from the Razer CEO, a set of stickers, and a 2-meter braided cable with two anti-interference ferrite rings and USB and microUSB connectors. There is no case in the kit, which is unlikely to appeal to those who are used to taking a gamepad with them to tournaments — the likelihood of accidentally damaging the gadget increases.

Despite the fact that the controller is designed for the PlayStation 4, its design resembles the Xbox One gamepad: the same wide body, chopped shapes, massive triggers, and even the sticks are not flush, but asymmetrically spaced — the left one is higher, the right one is lower. In my opinion, this design is more convenient; In general, I like the Xbox controllers more than the DualShock 4, so Razer’s solution looks very interesting.

Given the position of the left stick, the gamepad must be held by the body, not the handles, which determines its ergonomics; it’s not as sleek as the DualShock 4, but the deliberate roughness of the forms has its own aesthetic appeal. Of course, the perception of design is subjective, but I really liked the gamepad.

The Quartz Pink model combines a pink body with gray rubber grips and silver bumpers and triggers. The Classic Black and Mercury White models are made in solid black and silver solid color schemes.

The case is not only large, but also quite weighty: 322 g versus 210 g for the DualShock 4. Out of habit, hands get tired after long gaming sessions, but the gamepad will have to be charged less often: it provides about 19 hours of battery life, while the «native» gamepad the console signals a low battery after 6 hours of play.

The body plastic is slightly rough, and the rubberized inserts on the handles have a characteristic texture (exactly the same as on similar inserts on the Razer DeathAdder V2 Pro and Razer Viper Ultimate mice), due to which the gadget does not slip out of your hands. The sticks are covered with non-slip material, for which thumb pads cling well.

At first glance, the Razer Raiju Tournament Edition contains the basic set of elements for the PlayStation 4 controller: PS button, sticks, D-pad, cross/square/triangle/circle, L1/R1 bumpers, L2/R2 triggers, touchpad. But turning the gamepad in your hands, you will find a few more keys.

So, in the area between the bumpers and triggers, there are the M1 and M2 keys: by default they duplicate the «square» and «triangle». And on the lower part of the case, near the handles, where the middle or ring fingers lie, depending on the grip, there are “petals” M3 and M4, which execute the commands of the “cross” and “circle” keys.

They are designed to serve as that legal cheat that will provide superiority over rivals in online games. Just imagine: you are fighting an enemy in a first-person shooter, and you need to jump, reload, change weapons or crouch, which you have to move your thumb from the right stick to the control key block. Accordingly, this way you briefly lose the ability to control the review.

But with the Razer Raiju’s additional duplicate keys, you’re using fingers that aren’t normally used when playing on a gamepad. Without releasing the right stick, you can jump or crouch using the M3/M4 paddles, reload or change weapons using the M1/M2 keys.

This way, you will have better control of the character and perform actions faster than an opponent playing on DualShock 4. Yes, it will take some getting used to, but very soon I was able to use the «petals» almost without thinking in Overwatch multiplayer matches.

In addition, on the bottom of the housing you will find two mechanical switches — the so-called trigger stops. If you put them in the lock position, they will cut the travel of the hammers by about half: you spend less time on the shot, which means you get the advantage again.

Separately, it is worth noting the mechanical-tactile keys of the cross and action block (cross/square/triangle/circle). Unlike the membrane keys of other gamepads, they have a well-defined feedback and a pleasant click, quick response and a pleasant game control experience. For example, in Fall Guys, the character has become much more willing to respond to the jump command.

The list of remaining controls includes a connection mode switch (PS4 BT, USB, PC BT), a pair key with a mobile application for setting up a controller, a power/pairing indicator, a microUSB connector for charging and wired connection, and a 3.5 mm combo audio jack (out for headphone or microphone input).

The audio jack only works when connected to a wired PC or console.

Connecting and setting up

The Razer Raiju Tournament Edition can be connected to a PC and PS4 via wired or Bluetooth. In the first case, everything is as simple as possible: move the lever on the bottom of the case to the USB position, connect the wire to the gamepad and PC / console — you’re done! You can use any microUSB cable, but the manufacturer recommends connecting the controller through the «native» bundled wire, in order to avoid creases and for better connection stability.

The Bluetooth connection should also be easy for the user.

For PS4: Move the switch to the PS4 BT position, turn on the console, hold down the PS and Share keys on the gamepad and wait until the indicator flashes quickly, then go to the console settings, select «Devices», «Bluetooth devices» and install communication with the controller. Next, you can select the user that will play with this device, and even use the Razer Raiju as the main PS4 controller.

For PC: you need to move the lever to the PC BT position, hold down the PS and Options keys on the gamepad and wait until the indicator flashes quickly, then go to «Settings», select «Devices», «Add Bluetooth or another device», «Bluetooth», select the gamepad in the list of devices and set up pairing. Please note that you will need a separate Bluetooth receiver for the PC.

Finally, you can customize the function buttons using the Raiju for PS4 mobile app. To connect the gamepad to your smartphone, you need to press the key with the gear icon on the device and wait for the connection.

In the application, you can reassign function keys (unfortunately, key commands can only be mapped to specified controls and only, that is, for example, macros cannot be recorded), as well as set the vibration level of the controller. One settings profile can be stored on the device, and another 500 are stored in the cloud.

Impressions of using the

My first encounter with the Razer Raiju Tournament Edition was a little tense. The device connected to the PS4 without problems, but did not want to work as the main one: it turned on the console when the PS key was pressed, but stopped responding to commands in the user selection window. I had to plug in the console’s native controller and re-pair it with the new controller.

The problem was solved only when connecting the Razer Raiju to the PC and installing the drivers downloaded from the official website. After that, the gadget began to behave as it should — now with its help I can launch the console, select a user and play without connecting a second gamepad.

As for the PC, by default the device only works on Steam, where it is defined as a PlayStation controller. To use it outside of Steam, you need to install the XInput driver: after that, the Razer Raiju will work in all games, but as an Xbox controller — that is, instead of the cross / square / triangle / circle symbols, A / X / Y / B will appear on the screen. It’s easy to remember and get used to the matches, but in my opinion Razer should have done more work on compatibility issues — not every user will look up the FAQ to find out about the firmware and drivers for the device.

Despite these shortcomings, the overall gaming experience with the Razer Raiju Tournament Edition is only positive. The gamepad sits like a glove in the hands, clearly responds to commands, provides good response with wired and wireless connections, and additional keys really give an advantage in games.

It takes a little time to get used to, and in the first hours I had occasional unintentional pressing on the «petals», but very soon I managed to get rid of them, and the ability to constantly keep my finger on the right stick, controlling the view, and generally save all controls within instant access proved to be very useful in shooters. Well, the fur-tactile keys make you want to press to hear that pleasant click.

Conclusion

The Razer Raiju Tournament Edition is a good compromise for those who play on the PlayStation 4 but prefer controllers with a stick layout like on the Xbox One. Aside from some connectivity issues that you might not have, this is a great controller that provides some significant advantages over your online rivals. Yes, in console projects, all players are equal using the same input devices, however, the owners of Razer Raiju are a bit «equal» than the rest.

It is worth considering that the device is quite heavy, and in multiplayer matches it is recommended to use a wired connection to avoid delays, but otherwise the gamepad simply has no drawbacks. Well, aside from its cost — but when choosing Razer devices, users should be prepared to get premium quality at an appropriate price.
