Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a video game similar to beat ’em all developed by Platinum Games and published by Konami in February 2013 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and later in January 2014 on PC. This is an opus for the hero Raiden. The storyline takes place 4 years after Metal Gear Solid 4 .

Although the game takes place after Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots , this episode is not part of the official series timeline, it is is a by-product of the series. It still has some elements of infiltration and differs from its predecessors, taking the form of an over-the-top to beat them all , whose ‘s gameplay is based on free-handling and real-time cuts.

The previous series slogan « Tactical Espionage Action » has been changed to « Lightning Bolt Action «. Indeed, the game moves away from the side infiltration/espionage that the franchise has offered up to this point.

Development

Old logo before Platinum Games resumed development.

The game was announced by Hideo Kojima at Microsoft’s E3 2009 press conference and presented in more detail at Konami’s press conference. A few weeks before the official announcement, Kojima Productions launched a countdown timer website that displayed various letters and numbers, as well as images of two characters, Big Boss and Raiden. Hideo Kojima is not very involved in the development of the game and prefers episode Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker .

During E3 2010, the trailer shows the stages of the game for the first time. The universe is futuristic, like in Metal Gear Solid 4, but more advanced in terms of action.

After creating » Tactical Espionage Action » with series Metal Gear , » High Speed Robotic Action » with series Zone of the Enders , Kojima’s group invented a new kind of game: » Lightning0 Action06 «, which could be translated to: Action Eclair «. The novelty of this game lies not only in in the gameplay of , but also in technological innovations, which, according to the developers, will create an environment in which it would be possible to cut the smallest elements with great precision.

During the 2011 Video Games Awards, it was announced that Platinum Games ( Vanquish , Bayonetta ) took over the development of the game. The game was reportedly canceled for a short time before Platinum volunteered to take over the project. However, Kojima Productions is still in charge of the transition scenes and story. It is at this show that the game changes its name from « Metal Gear Solid: Rising » to « Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance «.

Synopsis

In 2018, four years after the fall of the Patriots, Raiden now works for a private military security company called « Maverick Security Consulting «. While the world is supposed to have emerged from these civil conflicts, it is under renewed attack from robot groups. The powerful cyborg Samuel Rodriguez, known as «Sam», even managed to kill Prime Minister N’Mani, who was accompanied and protected by Raiden in Africa. Sam accuses Raiden of being a bloodthirsty hypocrite and tries to kill him in turn.
Investigation soon reveals that Sam is working for an SMP called « Desperado Enforcement LLC «, which has launched an invasion of the capital of the Republic of Abkhazia, where US-Russian interests are mixed. Maverick Security is asked to send military forces to liberate the capital uncompromisingly. Raiden, given a new body, returns to duty and prepares to take revenge.

game system

The game is based on crazy action in which Raiden fights against many opponents. The combat system is built around two very different but complementary aspects.

The so-called «classic» system is similar to of all , offering the player various actions such as parry, dodge, quick hit, powerful strike, jump. The combination and sequencing of these various actions allows you to perform various combinations to weaken or kill your enemies.
This system evolves throughout the game, the player unlocking new moves, new weapons and new abilities that he must control and use at best according to his approach to confrontation.

Along with this classic approach to combat, there is «Blade Mode» offered by Kojima Productions and Platinum Games.
This system switches the game to slow motion mode (as long as the indicator limiting this mode is full, otherwise the course of action remains the same), and the camera is fixed behind Raiden, on his right shoulder, like a TPS.
The player can then control the angle and position of Raiden’s saber and therefore direct the cutouts. The game engine manages cuts in real time, so you can decide how to cut an enemy or background element.
Once this mode is activated, the player controls the position of the cut with the left stick of the controller and the angle of the cut with the right stick.

Another mode unlocked while playing is the Reaper mode , named after his nickname «Jack the Reaper». The mode manifests itself in a radiant aura surrounding the character, who then displays unparalleled brutality. Raiden can then capitalize on ‘s unlimited blade mode (activating a mode that devours his entire blade meter) and delivers more furious blows.

These are two approaches to dealing with overlap. Some enemies stronger than regular cyborgs are indeed immune to blade mode, unless they were weakened beforehand. It is then necessary to deal with them in a precise manner and resist their attacks in order to sensitize either part of their body or their entire body. Depending on the opponent, the strategy can vary greatly.

As mentioned above, blade mode is limited by the energy sensor. To fill this gauge, Raiden must cut his opponents and remove their spikes, containing everything his cyborg body needs to power his high frequency blade.
Removing an enemy column also increases Raiden’s life bar. This «cut and take» principle is called Zan-Datsu.

In addition to his saber and other primary melee weapons (including a large double-bladed spear), Raiden can also use secondary weapons, primarily assault weapons such as grenades or a rocket launcher.

The game also includes several penetration phases, echoing other games in the saga. During certain phases, Raiden takes control of Gekko the Dwarf to attack enemies without being seen. You can also silently approach an enemy from behind and stealthily kill him using blade mode or context action.

Revengeance / Computer and mobile games / iXBT Live

It’s funny how fast time flies… Today you are a cheerful, full of strength and ambition young recruit Solid Snake, who was given the task of destroying the first version of Metal Gear while unarmed. And tomorrow you are participating in technological wars for a cybernetic ninja who consumes such Metal Gears for breakfast.

Development process

After the resounding success of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots , the continuation of the series was immediately out of the question. The first material was demonstrated at E3 2009. Then the “Almighty” himself descended from the throne and presented to the general public a teaser of the project, where there was a silver-haired swordsman wrapped in futuristic armor.

Initially, the same «Kojima Productions» was involved in the development. But, at the time of creation, Kojima, having given instructions to his team, left to oversee other projects. Following this, unpleasant problems appeared related to the game balance, the stealth system and the level design, which did not please the top very much. The game did not feel alive at all, and all the ideas of the team came to a certain dead end. Therefore, I had to look for an alternative that could pull the game out of technical hell. Such an alternative was the mutual cooperation with Platinum Games, whose projects formed the concrete basis of the slasher genre: Vanquish and Bayonetta. The studio was able to convey a fresh and unique tone to the series.

Kojima saw in their work what the project lacked so much, namely dynamics. He remained as Managing Director, while Korekado of Kojima Productions and Atsushi Inaba of Platinum Games became producers. The leadership of the game has changed and Platinum Games has taken the helm. 2 years after the launch, at VGA 2011, they showed their version of Metal Gear Rising. The game engine was changed from «Fox Engine» to «Platinum Engine», and the timeline was fully defined. Previously, she was doubtful tossing between MGS2 and MGS4. But with the advent of PG, the plot component also improved. The release itself took place on 19February 2013 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. On the PC, the release took place a year later, on January 9, 2014 on the Steam service. Thus, in the eminent series, another fad appeared in the action genre.

Plot

There are a few things to consider before starting, namely:

  • Are you familiar with the MGS series at all?
  • Would you like to know the backstory of the protagonist nicknamed «Jack the Ripper»?
  • And would you like to extend this unfortunate monologue for another couple of minutes of your life?

If you answered yes, no, no to the above questions. Then you should definitely read everything below.

The thing is, there are a lot of references to the events of Metal Gear Solid 4, so if you’re unfamiliar (or your memory card isn’t up to date), you might be a little confused. Who are the Patriots? Why is the main character a cyborg? And what is this SOP that the characters in «Rising» so casually mention? A simple and humble servant of the people will help you sort out this misunderstanding.

In its most basic form, Metal Gear is a walking weapon of mass destruction. The initial prototype of which was presented in Metal Gear Solid. He had the ability to launch nuclear missiles from almost anywhere on the planet. In the MGR (Metal Gear Rising) story, MG (Metal Gear) is in the background but will act as the opening boss.

The Patriots, a shadow organization that secretly controlled the United States of America, are a rather complex and integral part of the Metal Gear universe. Suffice it to say that its participants believed that the world should be united through behind-the-scenes control. Over time, all the Patriots were replaced by AI, in order to filter and control the spread of the information flow. Their intervention shook the world economy, after which private military companies (PMCs) began to appear.

The result of managing the war economy was seen in Metal Gear Solid 4. Rival PMCs fought pointless wars to increase their reputation and get as many military contracts as possible, which further increases the profits of weapons manufacturers and, accordingly, the economy as a whole.
However, the AIs that make up The Patriots used nanobots to develop a network called the Sons of the Patriots, or SOP for short.

Ultimately SOP and The Patriots were shut down by Snake at the end of Metal Gear Solid 4, meaning that PMCs had to rely on new technology. After all, competitive advantage means higher profits. As it turned out, Snake’s triumph had little effect on the economy. Nanotechnology has been replaced by cybernetics. Soldiers began to look like armored ninjas in exoskeletons, whose super speed, strength and defense rendered bullets mostly harmless.

Finally, our main protagonist enters the scene. Long before he started slashing bad guys like a sword-wielding cyborg, Raiden (real name Jack) slashed his countrymen with a small blade as a child.
He was born in Liberia in the early 1980s. He was adopted and raised as a soldier. He then went on to systematically kill dozens of people during the Civil War. In the early 90s, he developed a reputation as a feared killer and was nicknamed «Jack the Ripper».

After a while, Jack escaped a terrible life in the war, suppressed his memories and moved to the US to join the military. After the events of Metal Gear Solid 2, with all of his childhood memories restored, Jack was captured by hostile forces while trying to steal Big Boss’s remains from the Patriots. This is how Jack reluctantly turned into a cyborg ninja, a painful process in which his captors removed his head and spine from his human body and transplanted them into a synthetic material (for testing purposes). Unfortunately for them, he escaped. At that time, he already had a wife and a child. But because of the cybernation, Rose shunned Jack.

At the start of Revengeance, he joins the Maverick Security Consulting PMC. While other military companies sell contracts to the highest bidder (regardless of morale or consequences), Maverick focuses solely on ensuring conflict is contained through security. As such, one of Maverick’s biggest challenges is to help rebuild a war-ravaged African nation.

At the first meeting, Raiden receives a contract to protect a VIP person, which played a big role in protecting Africa. It is during this job that he meets the highly trained leaders of a rival company, Desperado Enforcement, whose goal is to foment war within the country’s borders. They kidnap the prime minister, leaving us to deal with the giant goliath. During the first mission, we overtake the kidnappers, but too late. They got what they came for and are cracking down on the prime minister before our very eyes.

Wrapped in rage, Raiden attempts to overtake the executioner, but his blade is stopped by professional assassin Samuel Rodriguez, whose fighting style is identical to ours. Clashing like master and apprentice in an unequal battle, he questions everything that Jack believes in. After exhausting and depriving us of our left eye, Samuel retreats, leaving us lying helpless on a high-speed train, bleeding. Fortunately, we are quickly found by the support team. After 3 months of rehabilitation, Jack vows to take revenge on all those involved in the kidnapping of the Prime Minister and the humiliation of his own self. But only by mastering the abilities, you can quench his thirst for revenge. You will need all the strength you can muster if you hope to succeed. Thus opens another page in Metal Gear about revenge for false ideals.

Theme

As you can see from the name of the game itself, the main theme was a bloody vendetta (at that time it was not so hackneyed). In addition to his pride, Jack, throughout the journey, tries to prove the authenticity of his ideals. After a dark past, he becomes the protector of the weak and disadvantaged, thereby justifying his ruthless attitude towards all who stand in his way. And Jack dealt with the enemy extremely bloody.

The second theme of the game is the use of children as material for the creation of cyborg soldiers. Jack’s motives for stopping the Desperado organization were a direct result of being the same research subject in the past with no future. The relationship between Raiden and the members of the Desperado group becomes interesting. In the course of the clashes, you learn about their difficult past and motives. Two of the members of Desperado, the beautiful Frenchwoman Mistral and the criminal nihilist Monsoon, were also former child soldiers… Psychological Jack separates himself and them as black and white, not fully understanding the consequences of his actions. Adopting the philosophy of the enemy, in the end he understands who he really is.

Snake, unlike Raiden, never entertained fantasies of justice. He knew what terrible things he did with his own hands and recognized in himself a killer who takes other people’s lives. For him, the war was an example of gray morality, where everyone, obsessed with an idea, fights for his own truth.

A bit about Hideo himself

Every story told by Kojima carried some deep philosophical overtones. And in general, he is a pretty good thinker, which has gone since childhood. From the book that Vitaly Kazunov advised me, you can learn a lot about our Genius.

Until the age of 4, our future game designer wandered from place to place until he settled in Osaka. And in the following years he fell in love with narrative art. His family survived the Second World War, which is why the father had something to tell the child. From here you can catch the reason why he was carried away by the military theme. His parents were almost always busy, but they always did something together every day. As soon as the exhausting day came to an end, the whole family would gather and watch one movie a day. Later, his parents began to give him money for independent trips to the cinema — but only on the condition that, upon returning home, he thoughtfully discussed with them the meaning and direction of the picture. It was then that he acquired the habit of going into long reflections, sometimes even crashing into lampposts.

When Kojima was 13, his father died. In essence, his father was a spiritual mentor for him, who suppressed hatred for America, thereby giving way to the art of cinema. Left without an inspiration, he had to spend his entire childhood in an empty house, left alone with his abstract thinking on the topic of wars and cinema, which, as we see, backfired on him in the future. This passage demonstrates how his passions and childhood traumas affected his work in general. Having found a use for them, the author transformed them into a work of art approved by millions of fans.

Anyone interested in immersing themselves in Hideo’s past, and who would like to study in more detail the history of the creation of Metal Gear Solid, you are welcome to read the book «Kojima the Genius» from a fierce fan and analyst Terry Wolfe. There is plenty of material for you.

Gameplay

You can endlessly look at three things: how fire burns, how water flows, and how Jack guts opponents in all verticals. It was this mechanic that made me stay in the game for at least another 20 minutes.
What does a great slasher need to be remembered once and for all? Cinematic scenes filled with epic explosions and charismatic characters? Maybe a large number of different weapons? Or a one-button mode, thanks to which you can move around the area forgetting about the spacebar for the whole game?

No, no, and no again! All you need to be happy is the Blade Mode mechanic, thanks to which you can chop your opponent into sashimi without any problems (Japanese dish, if anything). This mode allowed players to fall head over heels in love with both the protagonist and the game itself. True, the cut objects quickly disappear from the location, but these are already the technological costs of the previous generation consoles. The combat system consists of two buttons … well, three button mode, where all you need is to fend off enemy attacks, press combinations of heavy (RMB) and light (LMB) attacks.

Under the health there is a bar of fuel, after filling it you can activate Blade Mode. When activated, time slows down, and a “chopping interface” appears in front of us, where, showing the trajectory of the cut of the katana, we are given complete freedom of action. For many, the game can be a kind of anti-stress. When, for example, the boss pissed off or the girl left, (no one is safe) you come home and release all the unspoken emotions on the poor cyborg model. Thanks to Havok’s physics engine for simulating real-time interactions. Well, what about without the «Ripper» mode, (Devil Trigger in the common people). Having accumulated enough energy, Jack is able to triple the real massacre without any preludes.

The battles themselves take place in small and medium arenas, where you first need to deal with the enemy, and only then move on. And the class variety of enemies is quite significant. You have to resist ground infantry, juggernauts, mimics, ninjas in the end. The military air force was also left with a seat. In addition to cyborgs and the Air Force, there are technological analogues of Metal Gear. The robots, whose habits looked like bulls, were especially infuriating. Notice you at least once, then they will not get rid of. This can include passing bosses, which later become ordinary opponents. In this way, the developers convey a sense of GG progression. After the battles, as expected, they give out style points from D to S rank.

According to the laws of the series, stealth has reserved a place for itself. If MGR were under the wing of Kojima Productions alone, stealth would be much more intricate. But he was added here for the sake of a tick with a postscript — Kojima’s mockery. Jack’s opponent immediately notices only in a head-on collision, and the cover mechanic is completely absent. Covert finishing off can hardly be called covert … Running up to a large cluster of opponents, Raiden rips out the organs of his victim with all his passion, and the enemies in general «F**k!» (Apparently, cyborgs, apart from pain suppression, have no echo location at all) But as I said above, the game is not about stealth at all. Stealth mode is justified only by side missions, where with the help of stealth skills it is necessary to save civilians before they can be executed.

Cyborg equipment has 4 slots. As with most Metal Gear games, when you call up the item menu, the game will pause. The original idea was based on the active menu in real time. However, Platinum later explained that an attempt was made, but the pause proved necessary to reset the saved textures and animation of the currently selected weapon from the console’s RAM.

The first slot is responsible for health and energy capsules used during the battle. The second contains secondary ammunition: varieties of grenades, RPGs, and without the classic Snake box. The third and fourth includes both Jack’s main weapon and the secondary weapon dropped by the bosses.

The system for replenishing lives is quite unique. At the moment of a competent cut of the enemy, it is possible to tear out the spine from it, squeezing which Jack easily replenishes all his stamina and fuel cells. Defeating enemies and collecting items awards Battle Points (BP) that can be spent in the customization menu available on the codec screen.

Harmonizing character customization is divided into 6 separate cells allowing:

  1. Pick up Jack’s armor to taste. For ardent MGS fans, Kojima left a reference in the form of a Gray Fox cyborg skin.
  2. Buy or upgrade the power of the main weapon
  3. Enhance the unique weapons of the bosses
  4. Increase the stamina reserve
  5. Upgrade the fuel elements for the Blade mod and the Ripper (duration)
  6. And acquire additional skills for yourself
  7. subdivided into missions at the end of which we will have a climactic boss fight. Each in turn has a very charismatic appearance and an individual approach in battles. With one you need to be extremely careful at a distance, and the other should not be allowed to approach you in close combat. It will not be difficult to single out very interesting antagonists:

    • Mistral is a cyborg from the Winds of Destruction, uses a body with many slots for extra hands, fights with a special spear that can turn into a whip. Mistral dreamed of a strong opponent, which she found in the person of Raiden.
    • Monsun is another of the «Winds of Destruction», possessing a body capable of disintegrating into fragments and equipped with a powerful magnet. Sai uses daggers as a weapon. I am convinced that the world lives only according to the law of the jungle. Through a «philosophical» conversation with Raiden, he awakened the «Jack the Ripper» in him, although the first impetus for this was Sam, forcing him to doubt his «sword of justice».
    • Sundowner is the third of the Winds of Destruction and the leader of the Desperado. He wields two huge machetes that can combine into huge scissors, as well as six shields with a detonating coating located on his back. Loves war and destruction. He has a very specific sense of humor and perceives war as a business.
    • Samuel Rodriguez, Rocket Sam — Not a member of the Winds of Destruction. Of all the implants, he only has a cyber-prosthetic right arm. His weapon is the sword «Murasama», inherited from his father and converted into a high-frequency one. It’s hard to say what Sam wanted. In the Jetstream Sam add-on, it turns out that he, like Raiden, wanted to destroy the World Marshal, met with Monsoon, destroyed Ray’s Metal Gear, but lost to Armstrong due to a fatal mistake — he cut off Armstrong’s hand in a curved arc, from -for which he simply turned it into a spear and pierced Sam’s right arm. The motorcycle that Raiden «requisitions» belongs to him, although it is strange that the motorcycle stood in one place for so long, because there is a rather large period of time between the events of the original game and the add-on. Perhaps before he left, Sam left the motorcycle for Raiden on purpose.
    • Stephen Armstrong is the main antagonist of the game. He turned all the events of the game in order to become president and change the rotten, from his point of view, America at his own discretion. Thanks to a swarm of nanites living in his body, he has tremendous strength and durability.

The staging of battles is insanely gorgeous. Each boss has several repeating phases, having studied which will allow you to easily deal with the enemy. Size really doesn’t matter here. With a single swing of your katana, you can cut a goliath, but you cannot stop a heavy blow from a samurai. While parrying blows, interactive cut-scenes can occur in which you need to deftly wield a sword or call the enemy with the right button with bad speed. Remembering the final boss, my right arm has convulsive flashbacks…

    DLC

Two more DLC packs have been released since the main release, both of which are side stories of the main campaign: Jetstream, Blade Wolf.

Jetstream focuses on the circumstances that led Sam to join Desperado. The final boss is Senator Armstrong, with whom the player will fight on the helipad. Enemies in the DLC received a significant overhaul of the AI to make the gameplay more difficult; they are more aggressive, react faster, and many of their animations have been changed or sped up to make them less vulnerable.

Blade Wolf , focuses on the actions of LQ-84i (a cyber-dog if you will) just before his encounter with Raiden in Abkhazia. The story is told as a flashback through a story he told Sunny sometime after Jack defeated Stephen Armstrong.

    Locations

Missions are primitive, but no less architecturally diverse levels. The art design of the game itself gives off matte sandy shades in the spirit of MGS4. We will have a chance to visit Africa, Abkhazia and even Colorado. The effect of scale is felt with the naked eye, but they will not let you go beyond the designated target. The level design of the corridors does not allow you to go astray, which plays a very important role in slasher dynamics.

In terms of architecture, everything looks great, but in terms of gamma, everything is bad here. Being always in the flow of events, you can easily run through the location without looking back even for a second. The specificity of colors in MGR and the rules of composition does not allow to properly capture everything in memory. The feeling of fading did not leave me in the flesh until the very end of the passage. But in defense, I can say that the metallic tones are due to the year of manufacture and the setting itself. Recall the same Deus Ex: Human Revolution in 2011. Most likely, the studios were inspired by this particular project.

    Music

What could be better than Jamie Christofferson’s invigorating soundtrack? That’s right, nothing. Unlike previous Metal Gear, the spin-off features several vocal pieces played throughout the various stages of the game, mainly in the major boss battles. During such battles, when the player has knocked out most of the boss’s health, the instrumental merges in unison with the vocal part, pouring even more adrenaline into the already boiling blood from emotions. The boss’s OST and text are also related to certain aspects of their characters. For example, the LQ-84i boss theme «I’m your master now» refers to his forced servitude to the Desperado and desire to be free from their command. All the songs that you can dig up in the game will make your heart not beat furiously in the rhythm of the party. Some may even feel a couple of years younger.

    Characters

Describing Jack’s backstory, you can immediately understand that this guy is an anti-social loner who can have as a partner a maximum of a cyber-dog with turrets to outnumber. But along the way, we can communicate with the support team through the codec familiar to us from the MGS series. According to him, the president of the Maverick office, Boris Popov, transfers tasks, of course, he often chats on matters of national importance. Kevin Washington is a wit and a prankster, often diluting the situation with his jokes. The brain of the team is a German doctor named «DOCTOR» and cutie Courtney Collins, whose task is to keep us at our will. To put it mildly, as characters they are boringly simple and do not carry a big burden in the plot. Yes, even the LQ-84i (Alya Bladewolf) looks like a fountain of charisma against their background. The villains are cranberry cranberry, but at least they lure with their megalomania and bombastic dialogues.

    — Self-taught, and not bad at all. But still, your technique lacks something … It is clear: you deny the essence of your weapon. It wants to drown in the blood of your enemies, but you hold it back.
    — No. My sword is an instrument of justice.

    Raiden and Rocket Sam

    — Well, did you have a heart to heart talk?
-Raiden, I analyzed his words and actions. I am unable to determine his motivation. Do you really need to fight?
    — Don’t interfere. It’s just between us. And it will end here.

    LQ-84i and Raiden

    Bottom line

If you look into the details, you can see a lot of chips and references to the original MGS. But execution and implementation do not let themselves be deceived. No, I really liked the game, and I literally went through it in one gulp (in 5 hours, not counting vr-missions).
