Crystal Dynamics announces that the Lara Croft games, Guardian of Light and Temple of Osiris, will be coming to the Switch sometime in 2022.

The massive success of the first Tomb Raider game introduced the gaming world to one of its most iconic female leads in Lara Croft. The puzzle-solving action of the series cemented Lara’s place alongside the titans of the industry and spawned her very own series of self-titled Lara Croft games. Now, two of Lara’s top-down adventures, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, are coming to the Nintendo Switch next year to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary.

Tomb Raider‘s two Lara Croft-titled spinoff games bring the franchise’s iconic puzzle-solving action to a top-down isometric perspective. The two games were popular among fans and critics alike and helped to revitalize the franchise which had been struggling since its heyday on the PlayStation 1. The different style of the Lara Croft spinoffs compared to the mainline Tomb Raider games has gone mostly dormant, with 2014’s Temple of Osiris being the last Lara Croft game released.

Now, the official Tomb Raider Twitter announced that Crystal Dynamics is working with Feral Interactive to bring back Guardian of Light and Temple of Osiris. The two games will be coming to the Switch at an unannounced date confirmed to be sometime in 2022. The two companies have previously worked together on the series with Feral assisting Crystal Dynamics in bringing the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy to MacOS and Linux.

The Lara Croft games coming to Switch will be a welcome return for the iconic Tomb Raider protagonist and an exciting addition for Nintendo fans. The two spinoffs will be the first Tomb Raider games to be released on Nintendo’s hybrid handheld console and the first new releases in the franchise since 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider concluded the reboot trilogy. A mobile Tomb Raider title is also in development scheduled to release at an unspecified date in 2022.

For the massive popularity of Tomb Raider within the world of gaming, its widespread popularity has often spreaded outside its own games and even the gaming industry as a whole. Following the previous success of the Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider movies in the early 2000s, Warner Bros. debuted a rebooted Tomb Raider film starring Alicia Vikander in 2018 and is currently working on a sequel with no confirmed premiere date. Lara Croft’s arrival on the Nintendo Switch will look to introduce a new generation of fans to her signature brand of dungeon-crawling, puzzle-solving action.

Character history

If you ask a gamer who, in his opinion, is the most popular character, many will remember the protagonists from the Grand Theft Auto series of multi-platform games, the martial artists from the Mortal Kombat fighting game, and, of course, the charming Lara Croft — the main character from «Tomb Raider». This woman became so popular that in the blink of an eye she migrated to comics and to the big screens. The main role of the adventurer, trying to solve complex puzzles, was played by actress Angelina Jolie.

Creation history

A girl who, like Indiana Jones, rushes into adventures and tries to unravel incredible mysteries, was invented by the English designer of computer models Toby Gard. This man created not only the image of a fearless heroine, but also her biography, and the model itself began to be developed in 1993.

Lara Croft was originally a man, because Toby decided to make a copy of Indiana Jones. But since the designer was advised to make the character original, he had to completely change the concept from start to finish.

The game was going to have multiple characters, and Gard noticed that female characters were popular with his colleagues. The artist drew ideas from the Tank Girl comics, was inspired by the appearance of the Swedish pop singer Nene Cherry, and the matter remained small.

The developers scrapped the idea of ​​creating both male and female characters in the bud because the concept was difficult to implement. In addition, it was planned that the game would be like a movie adaptation with a non-trivial plot. So, according to the idea of ​​the developers, the protagonist performs feats alone. Therefore, choosing between the developed design of Lara and that guy, the developers preferred the first option.

So, a Latin lady named Laura Cruz was born. But this variant of the name was difficult for the «British ear», so I had to look for other options in the telephone directory, which suggested a typical surname — Croft. And the biography of the heroine had to be changed to emphasize her British origin.

The First Lara Croft

The first game in the Tomb Raider series was introduced to avid gamers in 1996 and was released on the Sony PlayStation, Sega Saturn and PC platforms. The game not only showed the world a heroine who managed to get into the Guinness Book of Records eight times, but also became the ancestor of the third-person shooter genre.

In the story, Lara Croft, hired by the eccentric businesswoman Jacqueline Natla, must find an ancient artifact called Scion. Due to certain circumstances, the heroine had to travel alone and face obstacles. However, a secret is revealed to Lara: it turns out that Jacqueline needs this artifact in order to usurp power.

Millions of users tried to solve mysterious puzzles together with Croft, and it is natural that the game has grown into a multi-level franchise. Critics noted the image of the heroine, acrobatics, gear switches, ingenious traps (classic pits with spikes) and memorable enemies.

Initially, the creator did not plan to give Lara a mysterious sexuality and make her a top model with 90/60/90 parameters. And all because Toby imagined the «tomb raider» as a collected woman who is guided by a cold mind and uses common sense in any situation, even when her life hangs in the balance.

But the company «Core Design», which was engaged in the implementation of games, had a different opinion. Therefore, it is not surprising that soon critics began to compare Lara Croft with a silicone porn star. However, in the first games, her appearance was not so attractive (which is directly related to the then «non-advanced» technologies and graphics).

In 2015’s Rise of the Tomb Raider, even the smallest details on Lara’s face have been worked on by artists, so it’s interesting for players to watch the evolution of the adventurer. Yes, and critics noted that Croft’s breasts finally became «human size»: from a pumped-up doll, she turned into a real person.

During the game, depending on the weather conditions, Lara changes her outfit, but the traditional set of clothes consists of a bluish T-shirt, brown shorts, fingerless gloves, etc. And in 2013, military pants and a two-layer top appeared in her wardrobe.

When creating the image of the female version of Indiana Jones, the artists considered real models. So the “pioneers” were socialite Katie Price and Australian athlete Natalie Cook. The next official model was actress Rhona Mitra, who, according to rumors, specifically underwent a four-size breast augmentation for her role. In addition to Rona, Ellen Roche, Lucy Clarkson, Jill de Jong and Alison Carroll were among the lucky ones.

After the new reboot of the series with Tomb Raider (2013), Square Enix stopped advertising the game with official models. However, in 2016, the developers decided that Lara should have cosplayers, and in different countries.
