Top 10 Japanese Computer Games

Men’s Rules Men’s Rules

Yes, we at the editorial office understand that the material «The Top Five Apostles of the New Testament» would offend the feelings of believers less than an attempt to rank the whole industry. But computer games received a huge influx of audience during the quarantine-self-isolation. And Japanese computer games are a different world that has developed according to its own canons and has absolutely outstanding examples.

To cool the ardor of the experienced a little, we will fix a few rules for this list.

  • Games from the list are translated into English or even Russian. They are available on current console generations and for PC/Mac on Steam. In other words, all of these games can be played by us.

  • We have tried to select the most typical Japanese computer games. Obviously there will be a lot of JRPGs on the list. But what can you do if it is in the genre of storytelling that the Japanese are superior to their counterparts from the West?

  • We deliberately do not list gatcha games . Because gambling is bad, no matter how beautiful the fantasy world is.

  • We will try to diversify the list as much as possible, so it will not include series of games (except for the third place). Obviously, it would be possible to divide the entire list between Zelda and Final Fantasy, but we are all for diversity.

10. Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo Switch)

Let’s start with the classics of all times and peoples — the adventures of an Italian plumber. This is one of the landmark games in history; it can be said that this is Japan’s first major contribution to the global gaming industry.

9. Resident Evil 2 (PS4, Xbox One, Windows, 2019 re-release)

The legendary horror movie of 1998, qualitatively transferred to a fully three-dimensional world. The beauty of Japanese horror for Westerners is that they present nightmares in a different way. You can safely expect thrills.

8. 13 Sentinels

The most recent game on the list. It’s too early to say if it’s going to be a long-term hit, but here it is for something else. Have you seen Nolan’s Tenet? Its plot is linear, like in a fairy tale about Kolobok, compared to the space-time madness that is happening in 13 Sentinels.

7. Final Fantasy VII (PlayStation 4, PC, iOS, Nintendo Switch)

Our editor took out life insurance before selecting a part of the game for this list. He knows what the anger of FF fans is.

But why exactly the seventh part? Perhaps because he considers the seventh part to be the best. Or because a modern remake recently came out.

In any case, if you pass the seventh part, you won’t regret it.

6. Street Fighter V (Windows, PlayStation 4)

There are two 2D fighting games in the world: American Mortal Kombat and Japanese Street Fighter. To understand just how different two visually similar games can be from two different game development cultures, it’s worth trying to compare MK and SF.

5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo Switch)

The title game at the launch of Nintendo Switch, which actually provided the first wave of sales of the new console. Millions of players bought Switch just for the sake of the new Zelda. The Nintendo console, by the way, is pretty lousy in terms of performance, and Breath of the Wild is a great example of why gameplay and story are more important than frames per second.

4. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Complete the game and finally find out why Kojima is a genius.

3. Games From Software

An ironic slap in the face of the entire Western culture: for some reason, the most atmospheric games about the Middle Ages and the Victorian era were made by the Japanese. But still, Dark Souls, Bloodborne and even Sekiro are primarily about difficulty. Before these games, it was hard to imagine that a player would be stuck on one boss for a week, but not quit the game. And now these games are looking forward to.

2. Nier: Automata (PS4, Windows)

The scenario of this game is one of the best scenarios in the history of computer games: complex, deep, with replicas of Western philosophers to please the erudite, and with a terrific ending of its scale, which only arises on the third round of the game. Nier: Automata is to video games what 7 Samurai is to cinema.

1. Persona 5 (PlayStation 4)

Still, the most iconic representative of the JRPG genre takes first place. Nier is an emotionally charged game, while Persona 5 is a story that can be played by both a grandmother and a schoolboy. The disadvantages of the game can only be attributed to its exclusivity for the PlayStation.

But this is a Japanese console and Japanese games. Japanese games are supposed to be played on domestic products.

The best Japanese games for PC

this long-awaited «revival». Yes, it took some time for Japanese developers to return to the world of PC gaming, which was hindered by the dominance of consoles and smartphones in the country. But classic console franchises continue to arrive on Steam, making it possible (well, better late than never) to enjoy them in high definition and with improved graphics.

So, here are the top ten Japanese PC games that definitely deserve a place on your hard drive. Top-level game design, a touch of history, console gaming classics and Japanese culture. Go.

Shenmue I & II HD

Developer: d3t

Publisher: Sega

The open world of Shenmue is realistic and created with the greatest attention to detail.

Elapsed time hasn’t been kind to the game, and the d3t port is essentially what it is: textures, faces, and everything else look the same as they did in 1999. However, this only adds to Shenmue’s peculiar charm, evokes nostalgia while wandering around Yokosuka together with Ryo Hazuki in search of sailors and bikers. The sequel sends us straight into the intricate labyrinth of the streets of Hong Kong, which is ruled only by money.

No matter how you feel about Shenmue, she is an important part of the game’s story. In addition, with its help, you will be able to properly prepare for the continuation of the legendary saga, Shenmue III, which will be released next year.

Yakuza 0

Developer: Sega

Publisher: Sega

series Yakuza, Japanese hyper-mask and embodied all the years of the Sega, many years were executive franzhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizli franzhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizhizniyz. But as soon as she managed to gain recognition in the West, a PC debut followed, starting with a prequel set in the 80s. Yakuza 0 isn’t just the best introduction to the series, it’s also the funniest.

There is no other game in the world that gives you a better understanding of Japanese culture than Yakuza 0. And it shows in everything: in the way you beat a little mind into the empty heads of bandits, in the disco dances to the rhythm games, in picturesque views of the areas of Tokyo and Osaka, modeled after real places. Meanwhile, a remake of the first game in the series is on the way, so the day when PC gamers can fully appreciate the full story of Kiryu is not far off.

Monster Hunter: World

Developer: Capcom

Publisher: Capcom

The Monster Hunter series has long been thriving in Japan, albeit mostly on handheld devices. The new game was not only a step into a brave new world and the most beautiful part, but also the most friendly to gamers and accessible to beginners.

The thrill of the hunt is truly intoxicating, especially when the prey is a ferocious, fire-breathing creature similar in size and appearance to a Tyrannosaurus Rex. By defeating such a monster, you can gut it and make new weapons and armor from its bones and skin, sharper and stronger than before. And all in order to find an even more dangerous and tenacious enemy.

Even the long wait for the PC version and the nasty bugs on the release couldn’t stop Monster Hunter: World from getting the «most successful launch of a Japanese game on PC» achievement.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Developer: Square Enix

Publisher: Square Enix

A popular series in Japan, Dragon Quest has been a popular series for generations. However, in its thirty years of history, no major installment has appeared on PC. Up to the present day. Released on PC on the same day as the English-language PS4 version, Dragon Quest XI is essentially a traditional JRPG, from a simple turn-based combat system to an epic (and great) story that takes the best from each of the genre’s representatives.

At first glance, it may seem overly conservative in its mechanics and style, but after playing, you understand that otherwise the game would not work so «lamp», would lose its uniqueness. If you don’t mind getting your dose of thrills from a classic JRPG while still meeting the demands of today’s HD and 4K era, then Dragon Quest XI is a wonderful experience for you.

Dark Souls: Remastered

Developer: FromSoftware

Publisher: Bandai Namco

FromSoftware’s creation was not just one of the greatest games of the decade, it took the hearts and minds of Western RPG fans by storm, paving the way for all other Japanese titles on Steam.

Indeed, it was originally a bad console port, but this year’s remaster fixed most of the issues while adding 4K and 60fps support along with some other graphical improvements. There are not so many of the latter, but the main thing is that the indescribable brutal grandeur of Lordran, the torment and ecstasy experienced when defeating the next boss, has been preserved.

Despite the fact that Hidetaka Miyazaki has officially put the series to rest with the seemingly interesting project Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the unquenchable fire of «Soul» continues to burn within us.

Buy

Rez Infinite

Developer: Monstars Inc., Resonair

Publisher: Enhance

The game was born from the research of Mizuchizi and Igzuchiste. Rez Infinite is a trippy adventure that you won’t be able to replicate anywhere else. It would seem like an ordinary rail shooter, but every shot in the game causes an explosion of colors and sounds, intertwined into such incredible light and music pictures that it takes your breath away.

If you’re the lucky owner of a VR headset, then you simply must try Riz Infinite in virtual reality, for which the game was originally conceived. But even without VR, the game is definitely worth your attention.

Valkyria Chronicles

Developer: Sega

Publisher: Sega

PS

, but, for some reason, was ignored by the players. Sega then (in 2014) decided to port the game to PC and release it on Steam. That’s when they noticed her.

Surprisingly, Valkyria Chronicles managed to take the first lines of the Steam charts at the same time as such giants as Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed. Sega did well in the PC market with its IP for western gamers like Football Manager and Total War, but Chronicles was able to prove that they also had a need for purely Japanese games.

Those who are attracted by the theme of the Second World War are waiting for another immersion in their favorite historical period along with the upcoming Valkyria Chronicles 4.

Bayonetta

Developer: Platinum Games

Publisher: Sega

A crazy cool and sexy masterpiece by the eponymous witch Hideki Kamiya shoots the God-sent in a spectacular way. Hardcore action games with combo-based gameplay are a rarity these days, and only one studio can be called the masters of this business — Platinum Games.

Yes, the plot of the game is full of clichés; yes, one can argue until hoarseness about whether Baika is a feminist or a sexist; but when you turn on Witch Time and start shaking the soul out of angels and kicking (on high heels!) demigods, everything else becomes so unimportant and distant.

It took a long time for the PC port, but it arrived in all its glory: 4K, stable 60 fps and almost instantaneous downloads. The fastest, most agile and beautiful Bayonetta ever. Let’s dance boys!

Puyo Puyo Tetris

Developer: Sonic Team

Publisher: Sega

responsible for the best competitive puzzler in the world.

Tetris, perhaps, sets the tone for the crossover, but you shouldn’t completely discount Puyo Puyo. The essence of the game is still in the combination of four Buyeos of the same color, but the beauty is in taking the risk of building a tower out of them in order to beautifully overwhelm the enemy with one piece.

Puyo Puyo made its way to the West for a long time, but, in the end, the series achieved success with this game.

Dragon Ball FighterZ

Developer: Arc System Works

Publisher: Bandai Namco

The most popular anime series has finally got a decent game! Inheriting the cel-shading and animation effects from the same developer’s Guity Gears, DBF looks and feels like you’re playing in an anime.

Of course, one picture is not enough, we also need mechanics. The fights here are lightning fast, and the screen is literally torn from energy flashes and grandiose super-moves, activated by pressing only one button or a “quarter” of the circle of the D-pad. Any gamer who has ever encountered Street Fighter will easily master the local combat system.

However, the simplified controls (introduced to attract a larger audience) do not negate the technical depth of Dragon Ball FighterZ — this is objectively one of the best fighting games of the current year.

Of course, there are still a great many Japanese games that are still asking for PC. But will our wishes come true?

Persona 5

The most stylish JRPG in existence and, sadly, a longtime PlayStation exclusive. True, the first Persona has already visited the PC in the pre-Steam era, and the fact that its developer Atlus is owned by the PC-minded Sega gives hope for the future to all fans of Japanese RPGs.

Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future Tone

Perhaps the most famous digital pop star in Japan and creating his songs on the computer, playing the excellent Project Diva series of rhythm games on the PC will not work. There is a VR title Hatsune Miku VR on Steam, a tiny selection of eight songs can not be compared with a library of more than two hundred songs of the original. Another reason for the petition addressed to Sega.

Bloodborne

PC gamers already have Dark Souls, and Sekiro is coming next year, but Bloodborne, coming out of the same FromSoftware walls, remains perhaps the best Soul-style game. And, sadly, this is again a PlayStation exclusive. The only consolation is Sony’s decision to add the game to the PS Now library, however, to be honest, then lags will be the most terrible opponents in Bloodborne.

Any Nintendo game

It would be great to have this huge library of Japanese games on PC, from Mario to Zelda, Metroid and Animal Crossing.
